Wspinaczka – trening mentalny, lęk i stan flow | Hazel Findlay

Jaką rolę we wspinaczce odgrywa trening mentalny? Zapraszam do słuchania i notowania! Siobhan is 65 years old and after selling her home and possessions has lived in her motorhome for five years. She joins Nuala McGovern on the programme.Listener Kitty Dowry wanted us to take a look at so called 'risky' sports, and to encourage us all to look at them in a different way. Kitty is a climber; she has been doing it for 10 years and wants to see more women give it a go, even those who might have written it off for fear of it being too dangerous. Kitty joins Anita, as does Hazel Findlay, a professional climber and coach. As part of Listener Week we have been asked by widows to discuss one side effect of bereavement – hyper-arousal, and the term ‘Widow's Fire'. Nuala McGovern explores these ideas with listener Lizzie, Stacey Heale, who has written a book – Now is Not the Time for Flowers - about her experience of being widowed, and also by the psychotherapist Lucy Beresford, who can shed some light on what might be going on.How one moment or person can change your life's trajectory. Listener Bettie tells Anita how a childhood invite to a friend's house introduced her to a new way of life -one she says saved her.Listener Sarah Palmer got in touch to tell us about the volunteer work she does with the charity Pets As Therapy. She joined Nuala to talk about how her life has been “immeasurably improved” because of her dog Haggis and the work they do together visiting local hospitals and care homes. Why do so many of us feel bad about our tummies and why are the rounded or wobbly ones never celebrated? That's what listener Carole wants to know. Content creator Lottie Drynan created the IBS blog The Tummy Diaries and #mybloatedwardrobe and has learned to love her rounded stomach. She joins Nuala McGovern, along with Charlotte Boyce, Associate Professor in Victorian Literature and Culture at Portsmouth University, and columnist Pravina Ruda to discuss our historical and cultural relationship with our tummies.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Sarah Crawley

Elaine would like to know what is typical or normal in your seventies. Sex and relationship therapist Charlene Douglas and Dr Clare Gerada, former President of the Royal College of General Practitioners, explain the medical and emotional challenges around intimacy in later life and the accommodations that can be made if older couples want to have sex.Listener Teigan Banks got in touch. ‘I would love to talk about how losing my mum at 11 has led to attachment to maternal figures throughout my life and sometimes this can be negative. In all the grief media I see this is something I never see spoken about and it can be quite isolating. I'm sure other people who have lost parents have experienced similar things. I'm 21 now and this is something I still struggle with. I can feel guilty for these attachments as I feel like I'm forgetting my own mum. But knowing these people can't really replace my mum or be that for me.' Anita is joined by Teigan to talk about these issues and also by Julia Samuel, a psychotherapist, the author of Grief Works. Why can women's haircuts cost more than men's, at the same salon? One listener has asked us to find out. Anita is joined by Caroline Larissey, chief executive of the National Hair and Beauty Federation, a trade organisation for the hair, barbering and beauty industries, and equality lawyer Elizabeth McGlone, who has short hair.Listener Kitty Dowry wanted us to take a look at so called 'risky' sports, and to encourage us all to look at them in a different way. Episode 181 of The Adventure Podcast features one of the most accomplished rock climbers in the world, Hazel Findlay. Hazel featured on the podcast before, back when it first started for episode 19, and is good pals with Matt. A lot has changed for Hazel since then. She bought a house, got married and is now expecting a baby. In this episode, Hazel talks to Matt about giving up the dirtbag life, or more so about how she actually hasn't given it up entirely. They talk about realities of life on the road as a pro athlete, as well as exploring the idea of settling down and becoming 'grown ups'. Hazel is a leading coach, with a real focus on the mind rather than the body, and they get quite deep into the psychology of things - intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, bravery, real vs perceived risk, and flow state. It's a fascinating conversation which will no doubt make you question the way your brain works.Photographer: Jonny BakerSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Marty and Holly sit down with Dr. Heidi Sevestre for a conversation about climate change and geoengineering, as portrayed in The Ministry For The Future by Kim Stanley Robinson.  Dr. Sevestre is a glaciologist who is leading the call to action on climate change through her research and education initiatives. We talk about her recent expedition to Svalbard with Climate Sentinels, a zero-emission research expedition on skis to understand the impact of black soot on the melting of glaciers.  We also discuss her recent expedition to film a National Geographic documentary (Arctic Ascent) about the surging glaciers in Greenland, gathering unprecedented data with the help of NASA technology and some of the world's best climbers (Alex Honnold, Hazel Findlay, Aldo Kane, Mikey Schaefer, Adam Kjeldsen).  Then we get into the nuts and bolts of some of the geoengineering proposals in The Ministry For The Future, and bring Dr. Sevestre's perspective as a working climate scientist on how to make the best use of our resources and the time we have left to halt and reverse the trajectory we are on.  We discuss pumping out the lubricating layer under glaciers to prevent them from dropping into the ocean and raising sea levels catastrophically.  We talk about dying the arctic ocean yellow, sending sulphates into the upper atmosphere or spreading reflective beads over the arctic.  It seems that if our civilization and species is going to survive, it's going to take a lot of bottom-up solutions and the collective action of our next few generations on this planet.  While attempts at solar radiation management on a global scale will likely cause more harm then good, major carbon sequestration projects will be needed.  And it may be that the most effective way to capture carbon will be to create more forests and wetlands, saving the world by re-wilding the world; our best solutions may come from ecological engineering rather than geoengineering.Home | Dr. Heïdi Sevestre Glaciologist (heidisevestre.com)https://www.heidisevestre.com/Climate Sentinels | Hurtigruten Grouphttps://www.hurtigruten.com/group/foundation/projects/climate-sentinels/Dr. Heïdi Sevestre (@HeidiSevestre) / X (twitter.com)https://twitter.com/HeidiSevestreDr. Heïdi Sevestre (@heidisevestre) • Instagram photos and videoshttps://www.instagram.com/heidisevestre/?hl=enThe Ministry for the Future - Wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ministry_for_the_FutureKimStanleyRobinson.info | The reference site for Kim Stanley Robinsonhttps://www.kimstanleyrobinson.info/Buzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463

And in developing these courses, Magnus and Till are learning how us climbers can best absorb new information and apply it to our training and climbing… something that can help us all to level up, whether we work with a coach in person, scrape YouTube for the latest training advice, or enroll in Adam Ondra's course that he's building with Magnus and Till. We also touch on other topics, including the one thing Magnus learned when he was a newer climber that totally changed the game for him, what Magnus's big climbing goal is these days, and the YouTube video idea that ended up being just too sketchy for Magnus to go through with. Hint… it involves cheese. - BIG THANKS TO THE AMAZING SPONSORS OF THE STRUGGLE: Rungne: Try Magdust, performance chalk at a great price, and check out all of Magnus's other favorite gear. Four years ago this month in 2019, Yosemite's Magic Line, a 5.14 crack originally put up by Ron Kauk and not repeated until more than 20 years later by his son, Lonnie, saw its third ascent. Pushing her limits both physically and mentally, the formidable Hazel Findlay solidified her status as one of the strongest trad climbers in the world with the send. She reflected on her experience working the line at her blog, which is a must-read. Today, we rewind to an episode with Hazel in which she shares strategies for getting into the right mindset to send, strategies she no doubt called on to take down Magic Line. She talks breathing techniques, pre-climbing rituals, flow state, and more. When this episode was recorded, Hazel was just beginning her journey into being a professional coach, and she has since continued along that path, founding Strong Mind, which specializes in mental training for climbers, and also the Strong Mind Podcast, which she hosts. You may have heard me say that I've been doing some mental training coaching with Hazel Findlay this year to help with some fears and mental “blocks.” Well, it's been so valuable working with her that I wanted to have her on the show to talk about some of the same things we've talked about in our sessions together. Hazel is a 33-year-old professional climber and mental training coach. She made a name for herself at a young age for her bold trad ascents, having been the first British female to send E9 (basically 5.13d but with death fall potential). She went on to be become the first British female to send 5.14b, and this year she did her first 5.14d (9a). She's also done a lot of big wall climbing, having done the 3rd ascent of Magic Line (5.14c R, 8c+, E10). About 7 years ago, she began coaching after completing 2 coaching programs, and she's been seeing clients ever since. This year she created an online program for climbers, which I took and highly recommend, called Strong Mind. And now, she's offering the Strong Mind Community, which is an ongoing learning experience for climbers all about mental training. I wanted to have her on the show to talk about some of the most common things she sees that are holding climbers back mentally. We discuss the ins and outs of fear of falling, fear of failure, and social fears, and how she helps people work through all of them. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.   Show Links Hazel's Strong Mind Course Hazel's Strong Mind Community Hazels Instagram @hazel_findlay Skills and Drills Workshop with Alex Stiger

The Trad Climbing. Ci guidano James Pearsons, Jacopo Larcher, Hazel Findlay.

The Trad Climbing. UK 1998: we are in the midst of the English punk scene, of non-conformism. And it is in England that a new way of thinking about climbing begins to emerge, a new way immediately called TRAD, which stands for traditional. Yes, because the rock must be left as it is and climbed without giving too much advantage to the human being over the mountain. The mental stability and the mood of the climber are the most important part, as well as ethics, respect for the rock element, which must never be violated. It is a new form of vertical exploration that requires great control and perfection. For many Brits, climbing was this from the very beginning, before sport climbing. Let's discover together the history of the English TRAD scene thanks to its best exponents. We are guided by James Pearsons, Jacopo Larcher, Hazel Findlay.

The Trad Climbing.

"I climb better when I'm scared." I've heard this quite a few times. I even thought it was true about myself for a while in my earlier climbing career, but it surely can't be true? After speaking with Hazel Findlay about maintaining the bubble of a flow state in the last episode, there was one part of her account which reminded me of something else. Something different. Hazel's story was about maintaining concentration and avoiding falling back into a distracted mind while climbing at her limit. Magic Line has spaced and difficult to place gear, but the physical danger was a small part of the equation. The distractions were the same social and performance anxieties that most of us deal with, coupled with an added expectation as a professional climber. When Hazel hit the rest just before the final boulder problem on Magic Line she burst out of her bubble of concentration and had to fight hard to rebuild it to finish the route. It reminded me of something. After flicking through some old magazines and guidebooks it dawned on me - Neil Gresham's account of climbing the Indian Face in 1994. Neil had described how his body was being torn apart by his mind on the final moves to the finishing jug. Anchored to that jug he had felt a wash of regret and joy at being alive. Unlike Hazel he had been completely distracted by a genuine fear of his impending death. He'd ridden it right to the edge on one of the most dangerous routes in the country. Despite this experience he went on to attempt Meshuga at Black Rocks a few years later - taking a bad fall on the unprotected section of the route and tumbling through the boulders below, sustaining a head injury that took him the best part of a year to recover from. He returned in 1999 and made the second ascent of the route. This decade of risk taking culminated in the second ascent of Equilibrium at Burbage South. He put everything he had learned into this route, physically and mentally, and when it was done he decided that was enough. He didn't want to risk his life for these routes again. On the Indian Face Neil described how close he came to falling off the crux, high on the face above questionable protection, certain that he would die. What was it that kept him on? With the tension building his calves were shaking, his tips were sweaty and his mind was wandering. He says he thought he was off, but something screamed inside him and kept him on the rock. Is there something primal that drives the urge to survive strongly enough that you can keep it together when it really matters? What was it that Neil had experienced in extremis on the Indian Face? And why would he put himself in that position again? In this episode I try to answer these questions by following Neil through the 3 ascents and understanding what's really going on in his mind, with help from clinical psychologist Dr Rebecca Williams. Flow is a concept that can divide in climbing. For Dave Thomas it was the joyous experience that removed him from other problems in life. For Mina Leslie-Wujastyk it was a performance tool. Mina told me that a lot of her understanding of flow had come from conversations with Hazel Findlay and it had helped her to develop a different mindset both on and off the rock. Off the back of these interviews I wanted to know more, both to understand flow as a scientific concept and as a more ethereal tool for self fulfillment. That journey took me down some interesting paths in climbing, from the writings of George Mallory to US legend Doug Robinson, to an understanding of how flow can improve our physical performance or our wellbeing. Through conversations with Hazel Findlay and Dr Rebecca Williams I've explored the strange places that a flow state might take us, how better to experience one and the apparent contradiction at the heart of it all. There are many inspirations for this episode. Obviously previous interviewees Dave Thomas and Mina Leslie-Wujastyk, as well as current. Robert Macfarlane's Mountains of the Mind provided some of the additional thoughts and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's excellent book Flow. Hazel has been a full time climber for the last four years, which has allowed her to travel all over the world climbing interesting pieces of rock.  Hazel was the first British woman to climb a trad route at E9, and free El Capitan in Yosemite, which she has now done three times. Hazel has also red pointed 8c and onsighted many 8as, loves all types of climbing from bouldering to alpine climbing and is especially interested in the mental challenge that climbing evokes. (from hazelfindlay.com)

Mental training can be a pretty nebulous topic to begin with, so if I was going to be stumbling over my words, it could end up being a rough conversation. Not long after Hazel showed up at my house, it was clear that while she is indeed a force to be reckoned with, there was no reason to fret. As she would say, my worry was all "rubbish".   Hazel has a really great way of taking these concepts that are sometimes tough to connect with and making them seem simple. She struggles through them just like most of us do, and in turn is able to relate to exactly how we all experience fear, doubt, and any other number of emotions that can be both destructive and extremely valuable. I value this insight as a coach, and I look forward to talking with Hazel more in the future.    In this episode Hazel mentions The Inner Game of Tennis, a classic book about the mental side of performance.  That led me to wonder what other books that Hazel might recommend, so this month we are giving our patrons Hazel's recommended reading list, as well as a bonus episode with fan favorite Steve Bechtel. ABOUT: Hazel Findlay is one of the boldest female rock climbers in the world today.  Trad climbing at the age of seven on the limestone sea cliffs of Pembroke, it didn't take long for Hazel's talents to be revealed.  For six straight years, she was the British junior champion.  But at 16, Hazel decided to focus on outdoor climbing, specializing in trad and big wall climbing.  In a relatively short period of time, Hazel established herself as a dominating force, free climbing El Capitán in Yosemite Valley, CA., three times on three different routes: Golden Gate 5.13a, PreMuir 5.13c/d, and Free Rider 5.13a - all 33 to 34 pitches respectively. Naturally, this has caught many people's attention.  In 2013, Hazel was awarded Climbing Magazine's prestigious Golden Piton Award.  Although I heard of Hazel Findlay many years before, hearing the whispers of a chic being as bold as any dude out there, she really didn't come onto my radar screen until 2011, when she, along Alex Honnold, captured the 2nd and 3rd ascent of an unrepeated route I had established back in 1983, in Quoddy Head State Park in Northern Maine. Route: Maniac 5.13c/d After that, I knew it was just a matter of time before our paths intersected. I hope you enjoy this week's Podcast. Date: June 10th, 2015 About Hazel Findlay By the time she was 23, Hazel Findlay had made a name for herself as the first woman to send E9 (basically 5.13d but with death fall potential). The British phenom can been seen in videos doing sketchy climbing way above her bolt or gear with seemingly no fear. She started climbing at the age of 7 with her dad, quickly moved up the ranks as a comp climber, and then eventually followed her heart to outdoor climbing, where she's now traveled the globe (Morocco, United States, Australia, to name a few) to climb in all different styles. I wanted to ask her about how she trains, but she told me right off the bat that she doesn't train ;) So this interview is mostly about her mental game, how she's planning to help other climbers with their own confidence, and we talk about her recent shoulder surgery. What We Talked About How she stays present and keeps a positive attitude on challenging climbs Being a woman who's doing things only men have done before Shoulder surgery How she stays humble in the face of hard projects Her plan to help others with their own climbing Links We Mentioned Hazel Findlay's website: HazelFindlayClimbing.com Book on getting and staying in the "zone": Flow In Sports by Susan Jackson Training Programs for You Check out the new Route Climbing Training Program for route climbers of all abilities.
