It's time for the big-meal dry fly platform: hoppers and stoneflies. When we open our fly boxes, we're looking for a solution. If trout are sipping tiny olives in a soft tailout, we probably reach for the low-riding, vulnerable look of a Comparadun or a Parachute. And if we see trout slashing at hovering, skittering Grannoms in a riffle, we probably choose an Elk Hair Caddis or similar. But what do we pick when the trout food is bigger — when trout are eating hoppers, stoneflies, cicadas or other big bugs on the surface that are twenty times the size of a Blue Winged Olive? Those trout aren't looking for snacks. They're hunting for dinner — for the main course. And we need a platform or a style to match the moment. The hoppers and stoneflies platform is a major departure from the delicate mayfly imitations we've covered in this series. This platform isn't about perfectly matching the wing of a Hendrickson or the subtle flutter of an October Caddis. It's about presenting a substantial, high-calorie meal that gets attention. Whether it's a Golden stonefly clipping across the hoppy water of a bouldered run, or an unlucky grasshopper blown onto the surface from a grassy bank, these are not subtle bugs. They make a splash. They struggle. And in the best moments, they draw explosive strikes. With this platform, we substitute subtlety for buoyancy. Hackle is traded in for rubber legs, and dubbing is often replaced by closed-cell foam. In this episode, we break down this big-meal platform. We'll look at a parts list, cover some pros and cons about material choices, and look at the particulars of the platform itself. My friend, Matt Grobe, joins me for a detailed look at another of our favorite dry fly platforms.ResourcesPODCAST: Troutbitten | Fly Tying - Essential Tools and More (S17 Ep9)READ: Troutbitten | Pattern vs PresentationPODCAST: Troutbitten | What's the Deal With Emergers? Laura Weinberg believes that the best way to improve a community is to bring everyone to the table — not just government, but private industry, neighboring cities, and the people who live and work there every day. For Laura, real progress on complex challenges like housing doesn't come from a single solution, but from collaboration across borders and sectors.Laura is the Mayor of Golden, Colorado, a city of roughly equal parts residents and daily commuters, home to Colorado School of Mines, Coors Brewery, and a thriving outdoor recreation economy. Before running for office, Laura built a career in IT and business strategy, working across financial services and software companies, ultimately running her own consulting practice. When she decided to run for city council — and later for mayor — she did it her way. She also works as a fitness instructor, a role she says provides crucial balance to the policy-heavy demands of public service.Laura joined the podcast to discuss what it's really like to be a part-time mayor with a full-time workload, her through line of improving systems across every chapter of her career, and why staying curious and true to yourself matters more than having a plan.

Great leaders understand that influence is not about saying more—it's about saying what matters. Learning to “zip it” is not about silence for the sake of silence; it's about strategic restraint. When leaders master the power of the pause, they increase their impact by fostering active listening, projecting confidence, reducing emotional reactivity, and delivering concise, memorable messages. In a fast-paced world where quick reactions are rewarded, the disciplined pause becomes a competitive advantage. It allows you to manage the moment before the moment manages you—transforming impulsive reactions into intentional responses. Highlights include: Why speaking less often increases authority and credibility. How silence fosters active listening and builds trust. The role of pauses in reducing emotional escalation. The “What—So What—Now What” framework provides clarity. Why managing the moment is the key to long-term influence Practicing silence and conciseness strengthens authority, deepens relationships, and enhances executive presence. When you zip it intentionally, you don't lose your voice—you amplify it. The author of Theo of Golden sits down with Russell in Andrew Peterson's Chapter House for a conversation on the breakout novel. NO SPOILERS! Watch the video of this episode on YouTube here. Russell is joined by Allen Levi, the author of the breakout novel Theo of Golden, to ask why so many readers are hungry for a story about kindness—and whether such a person could exist outside the pages of fiction. Russell and Allen sit together in Nashville for a conversation based on questions RDM collected from listeners and friends. Without any spoilers, Levi describes Theo of Golden as a book not only about kindness, but about the reason for kindness—an ordinary holiness rooted in the reality of Heaven. Levi's clear-eyed theology of “glory and grime” found in Golden insists that darkness is real, but it doesn't get the last word. To close, Russell offers for Allen to share a rare on-air prayer for listeners who are exhausted by suspicion and artificiality. If you're struggling to see how kindness is worth the cost, or if you're weary from cynicism, this episode is for you. The calls are coming in hot on Packernet After Dark, and tonight's show covers some of the biggest questions hanging over the Packers heading into free agency and the draft. From the Romeo Doubs contract debate to a deep dive on Brian Gutekunst's drafting track record, the fan base is fired up — and they're not holding back. Romeo Doubs at $12M — worth it or salary cap poison? Chris from Alabama makes a passionate case for bringing Doubs back as the team's most reliable receiver, while Ryan breaks down the brutal math: can Green Bay really afford Doubs and lock up Watson, Reed, and eventually Golden? The Gutekunst draft report card. Drew from Green Bay challenges Ryan on the Creed Humphrey miss, the Quay Walker pick, and whether the GM deserves more credit for his work in trades and free agency than he gets for the draft itself. Ryan's verdict: stop measuring how close the misses were — just find the hits. The Packers' cornerback drought. The crew revisits a stunning stat — Green Bay hasn't taken a top-100 cornerback in nearly a decade — and what it means now that Gutekunst has publicly flagged the CB room as a priority. James Golden aka Bo Snerdley gives a conservative critique of contemporary geopolitics and domestic policy, framed through the host's support for President Trump's assertive "America First" agenda. Golden structures the program around high-stakes international developments, specifically praising Israeli military intelligence and the neutralization of Iranian leadership while highlighting Trump's hardline trade stance against Spain and his criticisms of the UK. The narrative shifts to domestic turmoil as Golden defends DHS Secretary Kristi Noem against bipartisan criticism, characterizing Republican Senator Tom Tillis's disapproval as an adoption of "Democrat talking points." Central to the show's purpose is a stark moral contrast regarding immigration; Golden juxtaposes the tragic stories of American victims of crime with the advocacy of liberal politicians, whom he accuses of prioritizing illegal immigrants over national security. The broadcast concludes by framing Democratic economic and social policies, such as proposed wealth taxes and sanctuary protections, as dangerous threats to the American way of life. America's present president is like those egos who feel entitled to carve their name into every park bench they sit on, apparently to “make their mark” and shout to the world, “I wuz here!”Indeed, Trump has demanded that our government patch his “Donald J. Trump” onto such public facilities as the Kennedy Center, the Institute of Peace, Dulles Airport, Penn Station, the Hudson Tunnel – and he might as well add the US Capitol since he treats Congress like his personal possession.Insecurity is what's driving his egomaniacal rebranding frenzy. As Trump candidly explains, “You've got to put your name on stuff or no one will remember you.”Oh, Donald, like the demagogic Joe McCarthy and other narcissistic politicos, you're destined to be long remembered… and mocked! Moreover, those vainglorious, gold-plated Trump nameplates you're tacking onto every public space will soon be unceremoniously stripped off and dumped into the trash bin of history. My friend, Fred Harris, a great populist senator from Oklahoma, told about the fickle nature of political fame. It was a true story about a governor who backed a boondoggle construction project after lobbyists promised to name the structure after him. They did, but as soon as the governor left office, his name was removed. Fred said if anyone ever dedicated a bridge or building to him, he wanted his name built into the structure itself, so if they later tried to remove his name, “the damned thing would fall down.”So don't despair that this president seems omnipresent. This too, will pass. Keep whacking at the autocratic, plutocratic structure of Trumpism – it's not built to withstand the winds time, much less the winds of democratic rebellion.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Lead columnist at The Athletic, Marcus Thompson II, joined Silver & JD to recall how special it was to see Alysa Liu represent Oakland at the Olympics and turn toward the harsh reality of the Warriors trying to survive without Steph Curry on the floor. While lack of availability from Kristaps Porzingis was a predictable outcome of the trade, it's not helping that the Warriors are on the precipice of meaningless basketball while their two best players remain sidelined.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's episode of Downhill Fast, Tamara and Rheannon unpack the absolute chaos that was Tamara's recent car nightmare. What started as a routine dealership visit quickly turned into a “you need all of this immediately” situation… and Rheannon was not about to let that slide.Enter: calculated wrecking ball energy.Rheannon breaks down the numbers, questions the repairs, and serves up mechanical wisdom with a side of “don't play us.” Because yes, you can pay your dealership, but no, you do not get to take advantage of people who you assume don't know better. Also in this episode: Tamara wins fantasy football and receives the most legendary prize imaginable a custom golden football trophy made by Rheannon herself. Home Depot run? Check. Getting carded for gold spray paint? Also check. Honestly, kind of iconic. This week is less chaos and more straight-up life advice, financial common sense, and the reminder that when someone tells you that you “need all this stuff”… maybe Google it first. You're welcome.
