In this episode, my mom and I dive into her name, its value, its effects, and the importance of names as a whole. Names heavily impact not only your identity but your racial identity too. Mom--Monse Santana-Martinez was born in Spanish Harlem/El Barrio in the '80s. Both parents, Americo Manuel Santana/Carmen Chevere, migrated at different times from the Island of Puerto Rico. These are our roots, whats yours :) "Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another" -Toni Morrison
Check out one of Carlos's book titled "Spanglibonics" that focuses on the Afro-Nuyorican experience through poetry! As always, thank you so much for listening. Be the change YOU want to see in the world. This is not just ONE movement, it is about longevity and changing your reality
To the black community: I am so so sorry that this country continues to wrong you and shame you. I stand by you, I will continue to use my voice, and I love you. To my non-black community/people of color: The black community has always had our backs, we've rubbed elbow to elbow, drank from the same wine, we know the injustice. So, we NEED to hold one another up and speak up until justice is seen. To the white community: If you want to wear the hoop earrings, speak up and fight back. If you want to cornrow your hair, speak up and fight back. If you want to rap alongside Kanye, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill, Lil Uzi, etc, speak up and fight back. If you want to pick and choose when to be down with the culture, you are a bystander. You are saying that black lives, in fact, don't matter. More importantly, your voice has shown to be way more powerful, say something! ****https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd**** These listed are a few of the bailout funds for those protesting who have been sent to jail: Act Blue (https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ab_mn?refcode=insta) Alachua County COVID-19 Bond Fund (https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/alachua-county-covid-19-bond-fund) Anti Police-Terror Project (Oakland) (http://www.antipoliceterrorproject.org/) Atlanta Solidarity Fund (atlsolidarity.org) The Bail Project National Revolving Bail Fund (givelively.org/donate/the-bail-project) Baltimore Action Legal Team (https://www.baltimoreactionlegal.org/donate) -Call Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison at 651-296-3353.
