Caregiver SOS

When a family member chooses to live an isolated life, it can be incredibly difficult to know when—and how—to step in. It becomes even more challenging when that loved one flatly refuses medical help, hides their symptoms, or is dealing with cognitive decline. In this episode of Caregiver SOS On Air, hosts Ron Aaron and Carol Zernial sit down with Alzheimer’s advocate, researcher, and clinical trial participant Nancy Meserve. Nancy shares a deeply personal and eye-opening account of intervening in the life of her 77-year-old sister, Marie, who had spent years living isolated as a functional hoarder and avoiding medical professionals since 2018. Through Nancy’s journey—navigating a surprise heart failure diagnosis, massive caffeine misuse, and early-stage dementia—listeners will learn actionable strategies for breaking through a loved one's denial, handling long specialist wait times, and managing the emotional toll of caregiving. About Nancy Nancy Meserve is an Alzheimer's disease advocate, researcher, clinical trial participant, and author of The Lived Experience of Participants in Preclinical Alzheimer's Intervention Research, published in the Alzheimer's Association journal, Alzheimer's & Dementia. She is widely recognized for her dedicated focus on documenting and improving the day-to-day lived experiences of those participating in early Alzheimer's research. Key Topics Covered in This Episode: Trusting Your Instincts: Why noticing that "something is off" is your most powerful tool, even when experts or the individual tell you otherwise. The Stealth of Isolation: How older adults living alone successfully mask severe physical and cognitive changes, from shuffling gaits to extreme word-finding difficulties. Using Urgent Care as a Gateway: How a single trip to an urgent care clinic can bypass years of medical avoidance and unlock critical hospital and specialist referrals. Navigating the Neurology Bottleneck: Reality-tested advice on managing long wait times for cognitive care (including 9-month or year-long delays for neurologist appointments). Creative Memory Scaffolding: Nancy's brilliant "Staples folder" method using provider photos and bios to build trust and comfort for a loved one who resists strangers or forgets appointments. Welcome to the Heal and Restore Podcast with Randy and Cathy Boyd—where we dive into real conversations that help you heal, grow, and strengthen your relationships. In today's powerful episode, “When Triggered, Remember to Give Yourself Grace,” we're talking about something every one of us experiences at some point—the moments when an emotional trigger rises up and suddenly we find ourselves reacting from fear, pain, anger, shame, or old wounds. Many of us learned how to survive emotionally long before we ever learned how to slow down, process what we are feeling, and respond in a healthy way.A trigger can show up through a tone of voice, a look, silence, criticism, rejection, conflict, or feeling misunderstood. Sometimes our reaction feels bigger than the moment because what is happening in the present is touching something painful from the past. We may become defensive, shut down, lash out, withdraw, or immediately blame ourselves. Then, instead of offering ourselves compassion, we often fall into shame and ask, “What is wrong with me?” or “Why am I still reacting this way?”In this episode, we're going to unpack how triggers affect our emotions, thoughts, bodies, and relationships. We'll talk about why being triggered does not mean you are broken, weak, or failing—it means something inside of you needs attention, care, and healing. We'll also walk through the G.R.A.C.E. tool: Ground Yourself, Recognize the Trigger, Assess and Adjust, Choose Your Response, and Exit and Engage Elsewhere when needed. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by your emotions, reacted in a way you later regretted, shut down during conflict, or struggled to give yourself grace in a hard moment, this conversation is for you. Our prayer is that this episode will help you slow down, respond with wisdom, take responsibility without shame, and remember that healing is possible one grace-filled step at a time

In this episode, we talk about Skill 7: Give Yourself Grace, the final skill and the glue that holds every healthy habit together. Real change is not built on fear, shame, perfection, or pressure. It grows from love, patience, humility, and the willingness to keep coming back. You'll hear why progress matters more than perfection, especially when life gets messy and you miss a workout, make an off-plan choice, or feel like you've fallen behind. Grace does not mean giving up or making excuses. It means getting back up, learning from the moment, and continuing the journey with a kinder, stronger mindset. This episode also talks about the power of community, encouragement, and remembering your deeper “why.” Whether you're working on food choices, movement, mindset, or long-term health, grace helps you build habits that last. This final skill is not about being perfect. It's about loving yourself enough to keep going, one choice, one comeback, and one grace-filled step at a time. Learn more about your ad choices. We've all been there—caught in that moment of going back on a decision. Do I push myself to follow through, or do I give myself permission to change my mind?In this episode, I dive into the delicate balance between extending grace to yourself and giving yourself the loving “kick in the ass" that you sometimes need to stay aligned with your goals.I share:How to tell the difference between your inner voice (future-focused self) and your primitive brain (present-focused self).Real-life examples of when it might be time to rest… and when it's actually time to step up.Powerful questions you can ask yourself in the moment to gain clarity, including:Does this decision move me closer to or further from my goals? At the end of the day, which choice will I be proud of?Am I being realistic, or am I aiming for perfection? What feels most loving to me right now?Why sometimes the most loving act is following through with the plan you made for yourself. This episode will help you start recognizing when to show compassion to yourself—and when to challenge yourself—so you can build trust, follow through, and live the life you really want.✨ Your homework: Start practicing these questions in real time. The more you ask, the more you'll learn to recognize the voice of your true self versus your primitive brain.Interested in speaking with me about how we can work together? Emily Shields dropped her kids off at school this morning—an eighth grader, a fifth grader, and a toddler—before stepping into her role as Chief Strategy Officer at OSF HealthCare. It's a balance she's perfected through years of strategic career moves and honest self-assessment about what matters most each week. Starting as a physician recruiter at OSF, Emily built relationships across the entire health system that would prove invaluable. "I worked with leadership, hospital presidents, regional leadership in all of those markets. It uniquely positioned me to build trust and confidence across the system," she reflects. The pivotal moment came when an executive sent her a simple note: "This person is retiring. You should think about this." That nudge toward the Vice President of Business Development role changed everything. "It was like something exploded in my office," Emily recalls. She seized the opportunity, moving from recruitment into mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures—territory she'd never navigated before. "I'm definitely not afraid to say when I don't know something and to pull in a team to surround me to help," Emily shares. Under the mentorship of Michelle Conger (OSF's incoming CEO), she learned to distinguish between skills that can be taught and the innate hunger to learn that makes leaders successful. In this candid episode of Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw, Emily also reveals: Why "mission and culture always win"—even when walking away from lucrative deals How OSF's innovation committee fast-tracks partnerships and pilots The power of being "at the right place at the right time" AND seizing the opportunity Why asking for help isn't weakness—it's strategic leadership How to think in "week chunks" when balancing career and family The critical importance of always signaling you're ready for more "You have to demonstrate you can do more than what you're currently doing. That does mean taking on projects outside your official job duties—that's how other people know you're capable," Emily advises. Now overseeing marketing, planning, and business development as Chief Strategy Officer, Emily is bringing previously siloed functions together to drive strategic outcomes. Her latest achievement? A 100-bed behavioral health joint venture opening next spring, addressing a critical gap where 2,000 patients were leaving the service area for psychiatric care. For women navigating their own career trajectories while raising families, Emily's message is clear: "Give yourself grace. Work hard and seize those opportunities when they're in front of you. Recognize that the path you set out for yourself in your head is not the one you're gonna take." From recruiter to C-suite in one organization, while raising three children and driving multi-million dollar deals—Emily Shields proves that with the right support, strategic thinking, and self-compassion, you can build an exceptional career without trying to be perfect at everything, every week. "There are weeks where work wins, and there are weeks where being a mom wins. And that's okay." Do you miss parts of who you used to be? In a short period of time Ryan Bridges became a mother, wife, and moved 15 hours away from everyone she new. She said, "I couldn't recognize the person I was becoming because I kept trying to hold onto the person I used to be." Through all of the transitioning, she realized she had to get out of this rut, otherwise, she wouldn't be able to show up for her children, husband, or herself. And now, she's on the other side of it all! No one talks about how painful it can feel to miss your past self. But this episode is a reminder that it's ok grieve the old you as you imperfectly transition into the phenomenal woman you're called to be. There is beauty in who you are becoming.  In this episode you'll learn about: giving yourself grace as you grow,  trusting God's process and timing for your life,  "I release" statements and the power of our words,  feeling like life revolves around your husband and children,  not recognizing your body during and after pregnancy,  releasing relationships that are no longer serving you,  recognizing your worth,  experience with breathwork,  fear of success, and  transitioning into motherhood and becoming a wife. Do you ever say asshole things to yourself like: "I should've gotten more done today" "I'm never going to get this. I may as well quit" "When I... lose the weight/get a promotion/find a partner... THEN I'll feel good about myself" Sound familiar? You're not alone. Women are hard on themselves, especially my Gen X ladies who grew up in the 80's and 90's. If you're over 40, you've had alllll the unrealistic expectations put on you. And you beat yourself up every day for not living up to bullshit outdated rules. During our conversation, we get vulnerable and share our struggles with being hard on ourselves. Katie goes deep on what it really means to give yourself grace in your every day, messy-ass life. We're not talking about becoming a perfect, graceful human being, putting a band-aid over a bad day, or "letting yourself off the hook." Quite the opposite. Giving yourself grace may be the most important thing you do to lose weight faster and easier. And share this episode with the women in your life.
