In this week's show we start with FOLLOW UP: The world keeps trying to protect kids online — Indonesia just joined Australia, Spain, and Malaysia in banning social media for under-16s, while COPPA 2.0 sailed through the US Senate unanimously. Meanwhile, Roblox is using AI to clean up its chat, because apparently "Hurry TF up" is the hill they've chosen to die on — even as they're still dealing with the whole "pedophile problem" thing from January. On the AI copyright front, Gracenote is the latest company to sue OpenAI for helping itself to proprietary data, joining a growing queue of plaintiffs who apparently didn't get the memo that everything is training data now.IN THE NEWS: Anthropic is suing the Pentagon after being labeled a "supply chain risk" — apparently because the CEO said AI shouldn't be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, which the Trump administration heard as fighting words. The delicious irony: the Pentagon is still running Claude in active operations while trying to phase it out. Speaking of active operations, investigators now think a missile strike on an Iranian girls' school may have been triggered by bad AI-generated intelligence from that same Claude-based system. So yes, the autocomplete that hallucinates your grocery list is also maybe accidentally bombing schools. Meta's Oversight Board is begging the company to get serious about AI-generated content after a fake war video from a Filipino fake news account racked up 700K views — while separately, Zuckerberg dropped cash on Moltbook, a "social network for AI agents" that turned out to be mostly humans larping as bots and had a security flaw that exposed everyone's API keys. The guy who built it basically vibe-coded the whole thing. Meta's own CTO said he didn't "find it particularly interesting." And yet. Oracle is hemorrhaging jobs and drowning in debt chasing AI dreams, its stock down 50% from peak — a timely reminder that "AI will replace workers" is currently manifesting as "companies set money on fire and lay people off to pay the electric bill." Researchers confirmed AI is homogenizing human thought and creativity — a thing some of us have been screaming since day one. A DOGE engineer allegedly walked out of the Social Security Administration with databases containing personal info on 500 million Americans on a thumb drive. The Ig Nobel Prize is relocating to Switzerland because it's no longer safe to invite international guests to America. Nintendo is suing the US government to get its tariff money back. SETI thinks it may have been accidentally filtering out alien signals due to space weather. And Pokémon Go players unknowingly spent a decade building a centimeter-accurate surveillance map of Earth's cities that's now guiding pizza delivery robots — which, honestly, tracks. In APPS & DOODADS: The GOG clan in Clash Royale just hit eight years old — respect. OpenAudible is the cross-platform audiobook manager your Audible library deserves, especially if you've got over a thousand books sitting there judging you.And finally in MEDIA CANDY: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 is here, and pretty beige. Live Nation settled its DOJ antitrust case for $200 million, kept Ticketmaster, and avoided a breakup — meanwhile court documents revealed employees joking about "robbing fans blind" and gouging "stupid" customers, which explains basically every concert ticket you've bought in the last decade. YouTube is now officially the world's largest media company at $62 billion in revenue. Bluesky's CEO is stepping down, which is either a bad sign or just the natural order of "person who built the cool thing hands it to the person who scales the cool thing." Dead Set — Charlie Brooker's 2008 zombie-in-the-Big-Brother-house miniseries — is worth a watch if you haven't. And trailers dropped for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (March 24th), The Boys final season (April 8th), and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 1st — yes, really).Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! Rock N Brews is almost open in Royal Oak. Rick Beato might be more of a plug machine than Steve-O. Go check him out anyway. Kanye West lost his case that the contractor had against him. Will he pay? North West put out a new song today. It sounds like a 12-year-old produced it. 60 Minutes outs the CIA about the Havana syndrome. Kai Trump is bankrupt. Nicole Curtis went on The Breakfast Club with Charlemagne Tha God as just a regular ole stop on her apology tour. Rosanna Arquette came out of nowhere to give Quentin Tarantino crap out the n-word in Pulp Fiction and his other movies. Timothee Chalamet is still in deep crap. GMA dug in and proved that ballet and opera are alive and well and growing like wildfire. Kanye's SOFI show is selling pretty quickly. Guess he's bulletproof. Schoenherr Roofing brings you a brand new Bonerline. We go way out of our way to call Tom Mazawey. This Baltimore Ravens reneging on the Maxx Crosby trade is crazy. Tom thinks the Detroit Lions offensive line is better now than last year. Matt Snell passed away. Michigan is in more hot water. See ya, Tom! Corey Feldman and Stephen Baldwin join forces on Baldwin's Podcast, One Bad Movie. What a disaster. Bert Kreischer went on Bobbi Althoff's new podcast. Which one do you hate more? Drew is losing his mind over GMA being such a platform for a bunch of loser celebs. J Lo is the newest loser to show up on GMA. Word on the street is 60 Minutes wants Joe Rogan. Music that makes you feel deeply human… There's a version of events where Joshua Idehen is still behind a bar in the West End, coming home late, flicking through channels. But then came Dizzee Rascal on Channel U – that first-person rant, that stream of consciousness pouring into the void – and something locked into place. Nearly two decades later, the British-born Nigerian poet and spoken-word artist, now based in Stockholm, has signed to Heavenly Recordings and released one of the more quietly essential debut albums of 2026. I Know You're Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try is out now. Made with his long-term creative partner Ludvig Parment (Saturday, Monday), it's the full realisation of something that's been building since the pair's 2023 mixtape Learn to Swim — a record that holds you through it all: grief, euphoria, fatherhood, friendship, the liturgic pull of a club at the right moment. House beats, choral swells, Shabaka Hutchings on flute, a choir singing a melody Idehen himself composed. The kind of album that makes you want to wave your arms in the air and then call your mum. The ride here wasn't quiet. ‘Mum Does The Washing' began life as a Twitter thread, set to Parment's spacious beats, went viral, earned Idehen support from Jamz Supernova, Huw Stephens and Robbie Williams (yes, really), packed out Glastonbury and Green Man, and landed him a spot on Later… with Jools Holland. Sold-out Jazz Café dates followed. A headline European and UK tour runs through spring, culminating at KOKO in London on 23rd April. To mark the album, Joshua and Ludvig have put together this mix of music to bring joy. Not one shade of it either. There's unbridled joy (Peter, Björn & John, a Kanye recommendation from a different time), celebratory joy (“a today I don't have to fight kind of joy,” as Ludvig puts it, via Primal Scream), defiant joy (Kendrick, for the days you will have to fight, but you'll pull through). Soul II Soul shows up to preach and repeat. James Brown is just kind of everything. Caribou injects the dance floor with melancholy and joy at the same time, which is basically the whole project in a nutshell. And somewhere near the end, a Mesadorm song that made Joshua cry on first listen, second listen, third listen. Music that makes you feel deeply human, as you've never felt before. Over to them. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/joshua-idehens-music-to-make-joy-to-ransom-note-mix/

In Episode 363 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu take a deep dive into how mixing and recording have evolved from the 1950s to today. Starting with mono recordings, ribbon mics, and engineers in lab coats, they trace the journey through multitrack tape, Neve and SSL consoles, gated reverb in the 80s, the rise of Pro Tools in the 90s, the loudness wars of the 2000s, and the bedroom production boom of the 2010s.They break down how technological shifts shaped the sound of each era, from Frank Sinatra's room-driven performances to Led Zeppelin's tape saturation, Michael Jackson's SSL precision, and the hyper-loud masters of Metallica and early 2000s pop and hip hop. The conversation also explores how Napster disrupted the industry, how streaming rebuilt it, and why today's music economy is more democratized than ever. The episode closes with a forward-looking discussion on AI, Atmos, spatial audio, and whether music is truly declining or simply evolving again. Along the way, Dee Kei challenges common analog myths, including the hidden digital processing inside many classic vinyl records. If you care about how technology shapes creativity, why records sound the way they do, and where mixing is headed next, this is a must-listen episode.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Starting off in FOLLOW UP, we've got a tax economist who actually made money betting against the "efficiency" of Elon's budget-slashing fever dreams, while Tesla is busy trying to dodge a $243 million jury verdict for an Autopilot-assisted fatality. Not content with being legally liable, Tesla is also suing the California DMV because they're offended someone called their "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving" marketing deceptive—ironic, since Jack Dorsey just "proactively" halved the staff at Block to make room for more AI slop. Speaking of which, Goldman Sachs is here to remind us that all this AI spending added a grand total of zero to the US GDP last year, mostly because we're just exporting all that cash to overseas chip makers while 80% of execs admit the tech hasn't actually done anything for productivity yet.Moving into IN THE NEWS, Sam Altman had the audacity to compare ChatGPT's energy-sucking habits to the 20-year evolution of a human, though the internet wasn't exactly buying the "my bot is just like a baby" defense. Anthropic actually stood its ground against the Pentagon's demand for killer robots and mass surveillance, so naturally, the military just signed a deal to put Elon's Grok in their classified systems instead—because what could go wrong with an "edgy" LLM in the war room? Meanwhile, cities are dumping AI surveillance contracts as citizens start a literal "smash-the-snitch-box" campaign against Flock's license plate readers, Google's AI is busy inserting racial slurs into news alerts, and the White House is apparently harboring a staffer moonlighting as a racist "masterpiece" creator on X. We've also got Reddit being slapped with a $20 million fine in the UK for being lazy with age checks, while Discord and Apple scramble to build verification tools that hopefully won't leak your entire identity to a hacker in Belarus. In MEDIA CANDY, the Paramount-Skydance merger is leaving the industry in a cold sweat of "synergy" layoffs, but at least we're getting more Game of Thrones spinoffs and Star Trek reboots to rot our brains. Face/Off 2 lost its director, Ryan Coogler is taking on The X-Files, and Google wants to use AI to turn music into generic "lo-fi" background noise for the masses.Over in APPS & DOODADS, OpenAI is planning a 2027 smart speaker that literally watches you through a camera—because you definitely wanted a $300 Sam Altman-shaped eye in your kitchen—while the Dark Sky creators are back with "Acme Weather" for the low price of $25 a year.We wrap up THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE with a deep dive into "Under Pressure" and Coruscant's urban sprawl, leaving us to reminisce about the days when KPT Bryce was the pinnacle of tech—back when "generative art" was just a fractal that took six hours to render.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.SquareSpace - go to squarespace.com/GRUMPY for a free trial. After several weeks away, Izzy returns for a solo Mental Man Monday livestream, marking a reset season both personally and creatively. What began as a short break turned into a necessary period of rest, reflection, and recalibration. Izzy opens the livestream by sharing a personal milestone—purchasing a 2023 white Toyota—symbolizing progress, responsibility, and faith in God's provision despite new financial pressure. While the new car represents growth, Izzy speaks honestly about the mental weight of stepping into new levels of responsibility and trusting that obedience and consistency will unlock the next season of provision. With Season 10 approaching, inspired heavily by Kanye West's Graduation album, Izzy reflects on what it means to recognize your identity and calling before external validation ever arrives. From there, the conversation shifts into conspiracy, mental health, and spiritual discernment through analysis of a viral TikTok discussing the Epstein files and the idea that marijuana—referred to as “lettuce”—may make individuals harder to manipulate because it encourages deeper questioning, while alcohol remains widely promoted. Izzy offers a transparent reflection on his own past experiences with both substances, acknowledging that marijuana sometimes led him to deeper introspection, but also warning about the spiritual vulnerability it can create. He introduces the concept of pharmakia, explaining how substance use can open spiritual and psychological doors that ultimately weaken discipline and clarity. While acknowledging the cultural argument that marijuana “opens the mind,” Izzy challenges listeners to consider whether being harder to manipulate externally means losing control internally, emphasizing that spiritual sobriety, mental discipline, and self-awareness remain essential for true freedom. The livestream then pivots into a viral controversy involving Tourette's advocate John Davison, who involuntarily used a racial slur during a public awards ceremony. Izzy examines the mental health complexity of Tourette's syndrome, emphasizing empathy and understanding while also discussing personal responsibility and the importance of public accountability—even when harm is unintentional. He explores how mental health conditions intersect with public perception, grace, and the ethical responsibility to acknowledge harm, reinforcing that mental illness explains behavior but does not erase the need for compassion, humility, and reconciliation. Finally, Izzy addresses backlash against artist Jelly Roll after publicly crediting Jesus for transforming his life while declining to speak extensively on political issues. Izzy examines how public expressions of Christian faith often attract criticism, arguing that faith-based transformation stories are frequently dismissed or attacked when they don't align with cultural or political expectations. He reflects on how spiritual conviction, personal healing, and public criticism intersect, encouraging listeners to remain grounded in their beliefs even when misunderstood or scrutinized.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.TrustBuilder Package

In Episode 362 of the Mixing Music Podcast, hosts Dee Kei and Lu start with a wild weekend recap that includes long work hours, live sound chaos, and a massive rally in downtown Los Angeles. Dee Kei shares how he went from one gig to another while traffic was locked up, and even ended up unintentionally marching with a protest on the way to the next event. He describes the scale of the rally setup, including flying dozens of line arrays to cover an enormous crowd, and then later connects that experience to one of the core themes of the episode: fundamentals matter more than fancy gear. The main conversation is sparked by a viral-style audio story: a blind listening test where people could not reliably tell the difference between audio passed through standard copper wire, a banana, or wet mud. Dee Kei and Lu use the article as a jumping-off point to talk about how easy it is for audio culture to become obsessed with mysticism, status, and expensive objects rather than results. They point out that even when engineers care deeply about details, most listeners respond to vibe, emotion, and impact, not the mythology around cables, converters, or obscure technical flexes. From there, the episode expands into a bigger discussion about anti-intellectualism in the Zen sense, not anti-intelligence. The idea is that practical experience, experimentation, and real listening should take priority over rigid theories, cheat sheets, and secondhand rules. They talk about how knowing everything about a compressor on paper is not the same as using it well in context, and how taste and emotional translation are often more important than technical trivia. They connect this to why AI may automate some low-stakes, background-music needs, but will not fully replace the human judgment behind great mixing and music made for music's sake. The guys also get into the social side of the industry, including how insecurity can show up as a need to prove people wrong, and how being “the smartest person in the room” does not matter if you make everyone miserable. They share stories about people who are technically knowledgeable but communicate with a defensive, correcting energy that makes others want to exit the conversation. Dee Kei frames it as a lack of contentment and an obsession with being right instead of being useful.Later, they bring the conversation back to growth and practice: why daily reps matter, how to get better by accelerating mistake-making, and why it helps to mix for real people with opinions rather than only practicing in a vacuum. They talk about practical ways to practice recording and mixing when you do not have a studio, like using rehearsal spaces, booking an affordable studio day, or working with local bands in exchange for experience. Dee Kei also emphasizes a simple principle he has said before: if you want to get good, start mixing faster and start making decisive choices with intention. To close, they reflect on humility, responsibility, and long-term improvement, including an example of how top performers stay grounded under pressure, plus a nuanced comparison of how gratitude can be framed differently in American versus Japanese culture. The episode ends with a reminder to focus on the craft over the distractions, keep it fun, and keep learning.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. From there, Vance and Ahmad dive deep into everything that had the culture talking: the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the Grammys, J. Cole's latest project, and the ongoing Kanye West situation.Bad Bunny didn't just perform — he brought an entire cultural moment to the biggest stage in American sports. We break down why his set was more than entertainment, what it means for hip-hop's global reach, and who we think should be next on that Halftime stage. Then we shift to the Grammys — are they finally getting it right? We discuss the tributes, the snubs, the recognition of legacy artists, and whether soul music is still getting the respect it deserves. Plus, Kendrick Lamar's stranglehold on hip-hop in 2025 and what that means for the culture going forward. And J. Cole dropped — so of course we had to get into it. Is the storytelling still elite? What does this album mean for his legacy? And is J. Cole approaching the end of an era?All that, plus current music recommendations and our thoughts on the rising British influence in hip-hop.

Meanwhile, META LARGELY FAILS TO PROTECT KIDS FROM AI CHATBOTS, proving that their internal safety checks are about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. If that doesn't creep you out, AFTER RING PRIVACY BACKLASH over police partnerships, a LEAKED EMAIL SUGGESTS RING PLANS TO EXPAND ‘SEARCH PARTY' from finding lost dogs to total neighborhood surveillance. Of course, REDDIT, META, AND GOOGLE VOLUNTARILY GAVE DHS INFO on users critical of ICE, because why stand up for privacy when you can just comply? In the news, we look at OPENCLAW, OPENAI AND THE FUTURE as the project's founder joins the Borg, even though META AND OTHER TECH FIRMS PUT RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF OPENCLAW because it's basically a security hole that can click your mouse for you. Peak stupidity has arrived with RFK JR'S NEW CHATBOT giving rectal dietary advice, while AI COMPANIES BOUGHT OUT ALL OF WESTERN DIGITAL'S HARD DRIVES through 2026, meaning you can't have storage because the bots need it more. Even VALVE ADMITS STEAM DECK AVAILABILITY IS AFFECTED by this memory hoarding. We also touch on STEVE BANNON SUED OVER MAGA CRYPTO SCHEME, LOS ANGELES COUNTY FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST ROBLOX for being a safety nightmare, and the fact that TESLA ROBOTAXIS REPORTEDLY CRASHING at four times the human rate. TESLA DODGES 30-DAY SUSPENSION by simply killing the word "Autopilot," while NEW YORK HITS THE BRAKES ON ROBOTAXI EXPANSION to keep the chaos at bay. Finally, POLYMARKET WITHDRAWS EXPLOSIVE ARTEMIS BETTING MARKET because betting on dead astronauts is too much even for them, leading the ETHEREUM CREATOR STARTING TO THINK THIS WHOLE PREDICTION MARKET THING MIGHT BE GAMBLING. As NEVADA SUES KALSHI and Jack Dorsey oversees INSIDE THE ROLLING LAYOFFS AT JACK DORSEY'S BLOCK—using AI to summarize the misery of his employees—just remember: YOU'LL BE SORRY WHEN YOU HEAR WHAT JUSTIN BIEBER'S $1.3 MILLION BORED APE IS WORTH NOW. Hint: it's twelve grand. In this week's MEDIA CANDY, we've got FREE BERT, KAT WILLIAMS: THE LAST REPORT, and the eternal return of SHREK. We're checking out MARK ROBER on Netflix, the return of MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS, and the trailer for GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE. If you need a soundtrack for the apocalypse, Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq has you covered with STOP USING GENERATIVE A.I and the Gen-X anthem I'VE NO MORE F*S TO GIVE!.Moving to APPS & DOODADS, OBSIDIAN TO NOTES is a $14 well spent, unlike CURSOR and VISUAL STUDIO CODE which are getting bogged down by slow models. APPLE'S AI PENDANT sounds like a watered-down Humane pin that relies on your phone to think, and APPLE PODCASTS AND VIDEO remains a pipe dream because bandwidth costs money. We've reached the point where THERE'S A GRIM NEW EXPRESSION: “AI;DR” for things not worth reading, and THERE'S A NEW TERM FOR WORKERS FREAKING OUT over being replaced—AIRD, or AI Replacement Dysfunction—which is basically the low-grade panic of being made obsolete by a machine that thinks bananas go in your bum.AT THE LIBRARY, we're thumbing through CLEAVE THE SPARROW, THE REGICIDE REPORT by Charles Stross, and Robin Ince being NORMALLY WEIRD AND WEIRDLY NORMAL.Then we descend into THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, where the Muppets are taking over with THE MUPPET SHOW and MUPPETS NOW. We catch the latest on THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU and TOY STORY 5, while tracking the PENTAGON PIZZA INDEX to see if war is breaking out. For the kids, we look at a 3D PRINTER / ENTRY LEVEL FOR KIDS like the Bambu Lab A1, and for the nerds, A STAR WARS-CENTRIC RSS FEED and a NEAT IDEA FOR AN RSS READER, “CURRENT,” which lets news drift away like water under a bridge. We wrap it all up with some HORROR IN UNDER TWO MINUTES and IMPECCABLE COVERS OF 80S SYNTH MUSIC, because at least the 80s had better soundtracks than this AI-generated nightmare.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.SquareSpace - go to squarespace.com/GRUMPY for a free trial. In ancient astrology, eclipses were viewed as omens of the death or downfall of prominent people. In this episode, I want to go over some examples from recent history and current news that demonstrate that this ancient observation is still true to this day. I recorded this on February 19, 2026, right as the big news hit that Prince Andrew was just arrested in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein files, which happened only two days after a solar eclipse in Aquarius. We'll dive into what I define as "eclipse season," a roughly month-long period that starts about a week before the first eclipse and ends about a week after the second eclipse. During this time, it is incredibly common to see prominent or political figures suffering some sort of public downfall. We are going to walk through several recent examples of this, from the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein in 2019, to the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto company FTX, to the raid on Sean "Diddy" Combs' mansions. We will also look at how this applies to major historical events, including the deaths of Princess Diana and Pope John Paul I, as well as the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. But as we'll discuss, a downfall is not always permanent. Because an eclipse is a conjunction, it represents the closing of one cycle, but also the laying of the seeds or foundations for something completely new to grow. Since our current eclipse season is not over yet, I highly recommend paying attention to the new beginnings taking root in your own life right now, even if they do not seem that momentous yet. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet performer and recording artist Kyla Moscovich, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Kyla Moscovich Trumpet Interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here   At a year old she had a trumpet in her hands, and she hasn't looked back since!   Kyla Moscovich has built a burgeoning career that bridges classical, jazz and pop music, performing concerts all over the world and, more recently, developing her studio skills as well, on Grammy-nominated records.   She has studied with Vincent Penzarella, Mark Gould, Laurie Frink and Tom Smith, was mentored by Jon Faddis, and was on stage at Carnegie Hall while still in her teens.   Kyla's father was close friends with Bob Reeves, and so her potential and trajectory was apparent around the shop from very early days. But, as we talk about today, the trumpet was not necessarily an automatic pursuit.   Kyla struggled to balance the expectations of practice and studying music with friends and normal kid activities, as any kid would, and we talk about what it was like growing up in that kind of environment, making the "jump into adulthood" earlier than most of us have.   Our conversation today is a fascinating glimpse into how to build a modern career in the music industry playing trumpet, not to mention how to pursue your own musical tastes, and forge a path that's true to you.   About Kyla Moscovich: Growing up in New York City, Kyla got her training from the Manhattan School of Music, studying Orchestral Performance and Arranging.   After graduating with her undergraduate degree, she quickly entered into the studio space where she began writing, recording, and arranging, while taking her knowledge of harmony and sound and applying it to her unique musical fingerprint, which can be heard on many world renowned records. Now based in Los Angeles, multi Grammy nominated writer/arranger Kyla has become one of the most sought-after horn producers, collaborating with artists such as J. Cole, Drake, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Victoria Monét, Céline Dion, Diana Ross, and more.   Episode Links: Website Instagram @kyla_moscovich Kyla on Just For The Record   Bob Reeves Brass Upcoming Events and Appearances: Dillon Music, Feb. 26-28, Woodbridge, New Jersey sales@dillonmusic.com National Trumpet Festival, March 20-22, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA https://trumpetmouthpiece.com/products/national-trumpet-competition-valve-alignment-special Metropolitan Music, April 10-11, Seattle, WA https://calendly.com/bobreevesbrass/metropolitan-music-valve-alignment-appointment  Arkansas Trumpet Day, April 18th, Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, AR   Podcast Credits: "A Room with a View" - composed and performed by Howie Shear Podcast Host - John Snell Cover Photo Credit - Courtesy Kyla Moscovich Audio Engineer - Ted Cragg

In Episode 361 of the Mixing Music Podcast, hosts Dee Kei and Lu start with some Super Bowl talk and quickly pivot into a bigger conversation about obsession, creativity, and what actually drives high-level engineers to improve. Dee Kei shares a recent clip he saw from a well-known mixer talking about working extreme hours early on, and how an unhealthy level of obsession can sometimes be part of why people eventually earn enough skill, stability, and confidence to relax later. From there, the episode becomes a deep mindset discussion about craft. Dee Kei argues that great work tends to create money as a consequence, not as a starting motivation, and that when money becomes the primary goal, it can de-incentivize the kind of care and curiosity that lead to truly great records. He uses a story about giving his young son an allowance and watching how the introduction of money changed the child's relationship to making art. The broader point is that creative work is different than typical product-based entrepreneurship, because art has no built-in finish line and its value is often subjective. They also talk about the difference between loving music and loving the identity of being a producer or engineer. Dee Kei suggests that real obsession is not something you force. It is an alignment that shows up naturally in how you spend your time, what you want to learn, and how much you care even when conditions are not ideal. He shares a C.S. Lewis quote about how favorable conditions never arrive, and why the people who achieve the most are the ones who keep learning and working even when life is inconvenient.Lu adds a practical anchor to the conversation with a reminder that fundamentals beat trendy techniques. Whether you are mixing, recording, or working live sound, focusing on the basics of sound capture, decision-making, and working within limitations is what consistently produces results. They also touch on loudness briefly, including the idea of getting competitively loud while still feeling dynamic, plus how tools like clippers can be used creatively when the foundation of the mix is already solid. The episode wraps with a short story about a Japanese sword parable that illustrates diminishing returns and restraint, tying back to the idea that technical mastery alone is not the point. The bigger goal is making meaningful art with intention, curiosity, and integrity, without reducing the whole process to profit, ego, or external validation.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Others reference Jesus while still promoting messages that directly contradict Scripture. So what are we supposed to do with that? We kick things off in FOLLOW UP with the ongoing "nuclear war" between Automattic and WP Engine, where discovery has revealed Matt Mullenweg's alleged hit list of competitors and a desperate attempt to bully payment processors—because nothing says "open source" like an eight-percent royalty shakedown. Meanwhile, the Harvard Business Review confirmed what we already knew: AI isn't reducing our work; it's just compressing it until we're all working through lunch and burning out faster while Polymarket turns our collective brain rot into a literal "attention market" where you can bet on Elon's mindshare.Transitioning to IN THE NEWS, Elon has officially pivoted SpaceX from Mars to the Moon, presumably because building a "self-growing lunar city" is easier than admitting the Red Planet is hard, though his xAI all-hands rant about "ancient alien catapults" suggests he's been staring at the sun too long. Between X allegedly taking blue-check lunch money from sanctioned Iranian leaders, Meta facing trials for creating "predator-friendly hunting grounds," and Russia finally pulling the plug on WhatsApp, the internet is looking more like a digital dumpster fire than ever. Add in Discord leaking 70,000 government IDs, OpenAI shoving ads into ChatGPT while safety researchers flee the building like it's on fire, and a "cognitive debt" crisis eroding our ability to think, and you've got a recipe for a tech-induced psychosis that even crypto-funded human trafficking can't outpace. In MEDIA CANDY, we're wondering about the soft-core porn intro in the latest Star Trek: Starfleet Academy while Apple buys the total rights to Severance for seventy million dollars—because in-house production is the only way to keep those ballooning budgets under control. Super Bowl trailer season gave us a glimpse of The Mandalorian and Grogu and a Project Hail Mary teaser, while Babylon 5 has finally landed on YouTube for free, proving that even 90s serialized sci-fi eventually finds its way to the clearance bin.Over in APPS & DOODADS, Meta Quest is nagging us for our birthdays like a needy relative, while Roblox had to scrub a mass-shooting simulator—because "AI plus human safety teams" is apparently just code for "we missed it until it hit the forums." Ring's Super Bowl ad for "Search Party" accidentally terrified everyone by revealing a mass surveillance network for pets that's a slippery slope toward a police state, and Waymo is now paying DoorDashers ten bucks just to walk over and close the car doors that autonomous tech still can't figure out.Wrapping up with THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, we dive into the Mandalorian Hasbro reveal where Sigourney Weaver's action figure comes with no accessories because her existence is enough of a flex. We explore the grim reality of "RentAHuman," where humans are paid pittance to pretend AI agents are actually doing work, and look at "Trash Talk Audio," which sells a $125 microphone made out of a literal old telephone for that authentic Gen-X "get off the line, I'm expecting a call" aesthetic. From Marcia Lucas finally venting about the prequels and a rare book catalog specifically for our aging generation, we're reminded that while the future is a chaotic mess of "GeoSpy" AI and corporate reshuffling at Disney, at least we still have our cynical memories and some free versions of Roller Coaster Tycoon to keep us from losing it completely.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! In this week's FOLLOW UP, Bitcoin is down 15%, miners are unplugging rigs because paying eighty-seven grand to mine a sixty-grand coin finally failed the vibes check, and Grok is still digitally undressing men—suggesting Musk's “safeguards” remain mostly theoretical, which didn't help when X offices got raided in France. Spain wants to ban social media for kids under 16, Egypt is blocking Roblox outright, and governments everywhere are flailing at the algorithmic abyss.IN THE NEWS, Elon Musk is rolling xAI into SpaceX to birth a $1.25 trillion megacorp that wants to power AI from orbit with a million satellites, because space junk apparently wasn't annoying enough. Amazon admits a “high volume” of CSAM showed up in its AI training data and blames third parties, Waymo bags a massive $16 billion to insist robotaxis are working, Pinterest reportedly fires staff who built a layoff-tracking tool, and Sam Altman gets extremely cranky about Claude's Super Bowl ads hitting a little too close to home. For MEDIA CANDY, we've got Shrinking, the Grammys, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's questionable holographic future, Neil Young gifting his catalog to Greenland while snubbing Amazon, plus Is It Cake? Valentines and The Rip.In APPS & DOODADS, we test Sennheiser earbuds, mess with Topaz Video, skip a deeply cursed Python script that checks LinkedIn for Epstein connections, and note that autonomous cars and drones will happily obey prompt injection via road signs—defeated by a Sharpie.IN THE LIBRARY, there's The Regicide Report, a brutal study finding early dementia signals in Terry Pratchett's novels, Neil Gaiman denying allegations while announcing a new book, and THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, vibing with The Muppet Show as Disney names a new CEO. We round it out with RentAHuman.ai dread relief via paper airplane databases, free Roller Coaster Tycoon, and Sir Ian McKellen on Colbert—still classy in the digital wasteland.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.SquareSpace - go to squarespace.com/GRUMPY for a free trial.
