Continuing a conversation that has been ebbing and flowing in Egyptology for years, Chris and Kate talk about the European perspective on Egyptology, the history of Egyptology, and how (if) we can work to decolonize the discipline. We don't have all the answers, but we know we need to talk about it. Chris posted this, and we go from there: https://chrisnaunton.com/2020/07/23/decolonising-egyptology-the-dirty-little-secret/

In our first episode, Kate and Chris introduce themselves and talk about travelers views of Alexandria, Egypt. Alexandria is a special case for historians and travelers. Founded in 332 BC, Alexandria is one of the newest cities in Egypt. It was a large and thriving port and the most important city on the North African coast. But it has been overlooked by travelers for centuries. Why was Alexandria so important? Why did travelers come? Why didn't they stay very long? What would make them stay longer, if anything? Today, it is a lively coastal city. What changed between then and now?
