For Memorial Day, host Meg Wolitzer presents two stories that feature men in uniform, codes of honor, and how conflicts can sometime lead to connection. Maile Meloy's “Red,” performed by Keith Szarabajka, takes place in London during the Blitz, where a man and woman find a rare moment of peace. In Kurt Vonnegut's “The Cruise of the Jolly Roger,” a retired army man searches for the next chapter in his life. The reader is Teagle F. Bougere. And we feature Vonnegut's candid and affecting “Letter Home,” about his experience as a prisoner of war. It's read by Jordan Klepper. In this week's episode, I am joined by the electrifying Sarah Natochenny. She was only 19 years old when she replaced Veronica Taylor as the voice of Ash Ketchum in the English dub of Pokémon, starting at its ninth season. Since then, Sarah has gone on to play a slew of other fantastic characters, including Alicia in the 2006 video game Bullet Witch, Aura Sentia in Yu-Gi-Oh!, as well as Marian on Robin Hood. Apart from being a voice actress, Sarah is also a film editor, having worked as the primary editor for networks such as MSNBC and an assistant editor on the films Life of Crime, Cold Comes the Night, Worst Friends, and Cruise. Sarah's journey has had many twists and turns, all of which have led to fantastic and meaningful places. Join us as we talk about her journey into becoming a bronze-medal rhythmic gymnast and how she relates her experience in conquering the challenges of rhythmic gymnastics with her voice acting career. TV writer and our own Tom Cruise correspondent, Gina Ippolito, returns to the NeverEnding Movie Marathon to talk TOP GUN... and a million other things, since she, Alex, and Rocco keep getting derailed to discuss which state has the best rollercoasters, if you can wipe down another man's cat, and Marlon Brando's food pranks on Frank Sinatra. On topic, they debate the future of Cruise's career and whether he can keep up the stunt game for much longer, if Kelly McGillis's Charlie actually has enough going on to consider her a "good" character (and her real-life inspiration), and if "Danger Zone" or "Playing with the Boys" is the best song on the soundtrack. For more of Alex talkin' TOP GUN, check out "IMDb Getting Ready for Maverick's Return Presented by USAA Insurance" on IMDb.com, Friday, May 27 at 10am PT. We are still catching up about our spring break trips and this time Kim shares the ups and downs from a Norwegian Cruise Lines voyage from New York City to the Bahamas with stops in "Orlando" and Norwegian's private island. Listen in and see if you are ready to set sail. In NYC, Kim stayed in the Hyatt Centric in Times Square for 2 nights before her cruise. The hotel was part of the American Express Fine Hotels Collection and she was able to get a $200 statement credits on her Amex Platinum Card. The hotel has a good location, but slow elevators and the rooftop bar is not open to minors. They flew into Newark and took the Airtrain to NJ Transit to Penn Station Kim was able to visit the Museum of Natural History, rent bikes and ride through Central Park, see a Broadway show, and explore NYC before the cruise. The cruise port terminal in NYC is very busy and it is hard to find the right spot to check in with very long lines. It took over three hours to complete check in for the cruise so if you are cruising out of NYC soon, be sure to pick an early check in time and expect to wait. Passengers has to show proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test, as well as a passport, in order to board. The ship seemed to be understaffed because there was a lot of waiting in line to disembark and wait for tenders for excursions. The ship didn't seem to be at capacity but that may be because there wasn't enough staff to fully open. Kim and her family cruised on the Getaway from Norwegian Cruise Lines. Her girls like the ropes course but they have recently changed the ropes course and moved things around. If you book a package that includes specialty dining, it is usually just for the first 2 people in a cabin and if you want to add the kids you need to pay extra. In the bathrooms they provide a pump of shampoo and body wash but not lotion or conditioner. The kids club was not open during her cruise and they instead offered a voucher towards the arcade. When docked at Port Canaveral, Kim and her family went to the Kennedy Space Center but they didn't have a lot of time to explore because the boat didn't dock until 1pm and they didn't get off the boat until 2:30 and the KSC closes at 6pm. At the Norwegian private island in the Caribbean you need to take a tender boat over to the island so getting on and off takes a long time.

It's time for some Cruise-on-Cruise action this week as the Mikes discuss the 2013 film "Oblivion" starring Forgotten Cinema's most repeated superstar; Tom Cruise. Mike Butler and Mike Field both truly enjoy this movie, but man does it have some issues when it comes to story. From conveniences in dialogue and character motivation for the purpose of driving the story along to inconsistent or nonsensical plot points, the story in this film could probably have used a little more time in the oven to really straighten some things out. But the bones of the story are solid, Tom Cruise does a great job, the score is great, and the art direction and cinematography are phenomenal. The film also gives Cruise one of his best final lines. Butler and Field will also go into the making of this film, how they did most of what they could using practical effects and props, and some bizarre theories on the true meaning of the film. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com/ (Forgotten Cinema).

Tom Cruise is a bit of a polarizing figure. You could call him eccentric, if you wanted to be polite. You could also call him dedicated. Most actors won't even stand up without a stunt double doing it for them, but Cruise is attaching himself to cargo planes and plummeting from the stratosphere. Hey, if someone offered to pay me $50,000,000 to base jump from space, I'd probably take it too. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Linda Carman and her son, Nathan, set out on a night fishing trip. They don't return. A week later, Nathan Carman is found in an inflatable life raft, but his mother is nowhere to be found. Now police say Carman killed his mother and sank the boat intentionally for a $7,000,000 inheritance. Carman is accused of enlarging holes in the boat, "Chicken Pox," to ensue it sank. The boat's insurer National Liability and Fire Insurance Co., asked a court to deny any insurance claim on the boat following an investigation that revealed Nathan compromised it before the accident. The insurer's report states that in "removing his boat's trim tabs hours before departing on its final voyage, Carman not only failed to properly seal four thruhull holes he thereby opened at the transom's waterline, but two recent depositions establish Carman enlarged those four holes.” This is not the first time Carmen has been eyed for a murder of a family member: He was reportedly named a person of interest in the 2014 shooting death of his wealthy grandfather, John Chakalos. Warrants say that Carman was the last person to see his grandfather alive before the 87-year-old man was found shot to death in his Windsor, Connecticut, home. Nathan reportedly purchased a gun that was the same caliber as the weapon that killed his grandfather, a multimillionaire developer, and declined to let police know this during questioning. He also declined to take a polygraph test. Joining Nancy Grace Today: Andrew Norris - Maritime Attorney and Consultant, Tradewind Maritime Services Inc.
