March 8, 2022 was the tenth anniversary of my podcast, The Chris Spangle Show. Originally launched as We Are Libertarians, it has blossomed into a podcast network with a ton of friendships and shows that have come out of it. I share the following ten lessons I've learned hosting a weekly show for a decade: Listen to your audience Be ready to adapt as technology changes Invest in quality You will want to quit Make it a group project Always be recruiting Evolve your show as you evolve Obsess over the value you're giving a listener The content on the air is more important than any other aspect of the business Have fun Video - https://youtu.be/jDiaiI_1VDM Learn more about your ad choices. When looking back after a few months, how will you know if your time and effort were worth it? How will you judge success? Will it be in the number of downloads? New influence and connections in your network? A second income? Understanding your own motivations and goals will shape your content and it is important to understand it before you begin. One thing matters in producing a podcast: How do you serve your audience and give them value? In this episode, I talk a little bit about the importance of starting with a mission statement first as opposed to the technical concerns of producing the podcast. Starting a podcast takes some forethought. Without it, a new podcaster can waste a lot of money and both the time of the hosts and the audience. In this episode, I set up the next few episodes by previewing the stages of podcasting and the fundamental questions that need to be addressed at the beginning of a new show. Where do I begin? This is often the first question asked by a new podcaster (and old ones looking to start a new brand). This question usually paralyzes someone looking to start a show. They'll look at other shows, see 4 years of growth and think, "I have no idea how to replicate it." Or, "Who would listen to me? I am not an expert." This resistance is completely normal, but it isn't an excuse for procrastinating. In this episode, I talk about the 5 or 6 years of talking myself out of starting this show because I want you to know that is a common reason people never begin. It is the first hurdle to building a great show.
