Send us a textYou're giving them space… but it's starting to feel like emotional quicksand. You don't know what to say, so you say nothing. Or maybe you say everything and still feel unheard. You reread old texts. Obsess over their social media. Wonder if reaching out will push them away, or if staying silent makes it seem like you've stopped caring.Sound familiar? This is Love Shack Live, the podcast for anyone standing at a relationship crossroads, where every conversation feels like walking on eggshells, and the dream of closeness feels more out of reach by the day. If you want to stop guessing and start rebuilding something real, you're in the right place. In this episode, we're unpacking the 3 emotional survival patterns that silently wreck communication during space and separation, even when you're trying to do everything right. So ask yourself:Are you a Controller, a Collapser, or a Drifter? And once you know… what should you do differently? You'll learn how these patterns show up in your texts, your silences, your attempts to reconnect, and most importantly, how to shift into conversations that actually heal instead of hurt.If you've been feeling like you're losing them and losing yourself at the same time, this one's for you.

Le chemin de ma philosophie
54. Ethical AI's Dirty Secret

Le chemin de ma philosophie

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2025 3:34

Every “trustworthy” AI system quietly betrays at least one sacred principle. Ethical AI forces brutal trade-offs: Prioritizing any one aspect among fairness, accuracy, and transparency compromises the others. It's a messy game of Jenga: pull one block (like fairness), and accuracy wobbles; stabilize transparency, and performance tumbles. But why can't you be fair, accurate, AND transparent? And is there a solution? The Trilemma in Action Imagine you try to create ethical hiring algorithms. Prioritize diversity and you might ghost the best candidates. Obsess over qualifications and historical biases sneak in like uninvited guests. Same with chatbots. Force explanations and they'll robot-splain every comma. Let them “think” freely? You'll get confident lies about Elvis running a B&B on a Mars colony. Why Regulators Won't Save Us Should we set up laws that dictate universal error thresholds or fairness metrics? Regulators wisely steer clear of rigid one-size-fits-all rules. Smart move. They acknowledge AI's messy reality where a 3% mistake margin might be catastrophic for autonomous surgery bots but trivial for movie recommendation engines. The Path Forward? Some companies now use “ethical debt” trackers, logging trade-offs as rigorously as technical debt. They document their compromises openly, like a chef publishing rejected recipe variations alongside their final dish. Truth is: the real AI dilemma is that no AI system maximizes fairness, accuracy, and transparency simultaneously. So, what could we imagine? Letting users pick their poison with trade-off menus: “Click here for maximum fairness (slower, dumber AI)” or “Turbo mode (minor discrimination included)”? Or how about launching bias bounties: pay hackers to hunt unfairness and turn ethics into an extreme sport? Obviously, it's complicated. The Bullet-Proof System Sorry, there's no bullet-proof system since value conflicts will always demand context-specific sacrifices. After all, ethics isn't about avoiding hard choices, it's about admitting we're all balancing on a tightrope—and inviting everyone to see the safety net we've woven below. Should We Hold Machines to Higher Standards Than Humans? Trustworthy AI isn't achieved through perfect systems, but through processes that make our compromises legible, contestable, and revisable. After all, humans aren't fair, accurate, and transparent either.

Limerence is an addiction-level romantic obsession with someone you can't have. It can get so bad that you're checking out of reality, isolating and fantasizing that the person you love loves you back. It's common in people who were emotionally neglected as kids, and it can rob you of any chance of truly loving someone and being loved in your life, because limerence takes up that space where anyone real, could really be with you. In this video, I respond to a follow-up letter from a man who wrote to me last year, immobilized with limerence. Now, his life is healing, and he shares how he did it. This episode features an interview with Louise Clements, CMO at WorkJam, the world leader in the digital frontline workplace, revolutionizing how HQs and their frontline workforces work together. In this episode, Louise discusses why she is no longer looking at attribution and is instead focusing on intent. She also dives into how she is using AI to automate and improve their marketing efforts and managing joint ownership of the funnel with sales. Key Takeaways:AI makes marketing better by giving the team more time to reflect and think. CMOs should be investing in automation. Marketing is increasingly owning go-to-market and jointly owning the funnel with sales. This is a bit of an evolution, and it allows you to focus on influence over attribution. Obsessing over first and last touch attribution is not useful. CMOs should focus on driving intent. Quote: “One thing that we've done is we've sort of stopped worrying about first touch and last touch attribution. I don't care. Is it ultimately working? You can drive yourself insane, worrying about specifics. Instead, it's looking at how all of those channels connect. And I think one of the greatest things in the last couple of years is, we've got these fabulous new tools. As B2B marketers, whether you use Sixth Sense or Demandbase or whatever, you can go in and understand intent in a way that we never could. So ,what I'm looking at is, are we driving intent? And then, let's time box that campaign and everybody who came in or who we touched. I want to understand what's the time lag? Are they going to come back? And I'm looking at things like that way more.”Episode Timestamps: *(03:41) The Trust Tree: The power of investing in PR *(15:28) The Playbook: Focus on driving intent *(41:05) The Dust Up: Agencies and fighting over scope*(42:30) Quick Hits: Louise's quick hits Sponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com.

This season, every episode of OMG focuses on a question that directors really need to answer. OMG is written, produced, narrated and scored by Matt Fullbrook.   TRANSCRIPT: Question #39: How much should we obsess over our customers' needs and desires? I've only relatively recently become familiar with the world of business design. Ya, given my positioning for more than 20 years inside an academic institution with a powerful business design pedigree, I should probably be a bit embarrassed. But my shamelessness is so profound that honestly, I'm totally fine. Anyway, one of the core elements of business design or design thinking is an obsession with the customer. You can imagine, for instance, a company having what seems like a super cool idea and investing squillions of dollars and hours into it until it finally hits the market…only to realize that nobody cares. But this kind of obsession has implications not just in product design but also in things as big as corporate purpose or as operational as hiring practices or advertising or office design or whatever. And it's relatively common now for boards of directors to get training on design thinking, including being indoctrinated with the importance of obsessing over customers. I think this can be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing, for instance, when the board is engaged in dreaming about possible organizational futures. A curse, on the other hand, when we're all the way in the weeds on some operational minutiae that are already foregone conclusions. But that's why today's question is more about where we should set the dial. Not forever. In fact, it might just be for the next few minutes. But let's ask so that the topic is at least on the table and we don't take it for granted.

How much energy and brain space do your problems and challenges take up? Let's be honest, they take up more space than we typically want to admit. Two approaches usually happen when hurdles pop up:  #1: Complain #2: Do everything humanly possible to find solutions to them (and don't stop until they're solved).  #2 Seems better than #1, right? That's what us high achievers do…we find solutions. But at what cost? Oftentimes, it's burnout. Because we have a tendency to OBSESS about solving our problems, even when it's not our problem to solve. Then we wonder why we have more problems and less blessings in life. In today's 5 Minute Drill, let's talk about how to put yourself in position to receive more blessings in life. Jewel obsessed over the quality of her work so much that she turned down a 1m dollar offer (even while living out of her car) because she needed time to make her work excellent. Obsess over the quality of what you produce, even if this means missing opportunities in the short term. Leverage the value of these results to gain more and more freedom in your efforts over the long term. Benjamin Franklin – He hired David Hall to create time freedom. He needed time to think, time to experiment. He gave up money in the short term to gain time freedom to create something for the future. There's no guarantee that it would pay off, but we all should think about how we can make investments that our future self would thank us for. Have fewer concurrent active projects. Instead of focusing on 10 things, focus on 2 or 3. Make it public. Share with your team. Be known as a leader who focuses on a few important objectives instead of 10 of them.  Match your space to your work – Be in nature, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote Hamilton in the Morris-Jumel Mansion, the oldest surviving house in Manhattan (served as headquarters for George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights, and home of Aaron Burr when he was Vice President), Neil Gaiman built a spartan, 8 sided writing shed that sits on low stilts and offers views on all sides of endless trees. Do Fewer Things: Limit Daily Goals – Cal learned this from his doctoral adviser at MIT. She was incredulous about Cal's attempts to switch back and forth between multiple academic papers. She preferred to get lost in a single project at a time. Cal was convinced that the slowness of working on just one important thing per day would hold him back. Work at a Natural Pace Don't rush your most important work. Allow it instead to unfold along a sustainable timeline, with variations in intensity over different timescales, and, when possible, executed in settings conducive to brilliance. Slow productivity emphatically rejects the performative rewards of unwavering urgency. Grand achievement is built on the steady accumulation of modest results over time, and you should give your efforts the breathing room and respect required to make them part of a life well lived, not an obstacle to it. Obsess over Quality By focusing intensely on the small number of activities that matter most to our jobs, you can find both the motivation and justification for slowness. Improve your taste. It's in the uneasy distance between our taste and our ability that improvement happens – aka in our drive to meet our own high standards. To combat the potential paralysis of perfectionism, think about giving yourself enough time to produce something great, but not unlimited time–focus on creating something good enough to catch the attention of people whose taste you care about but relieve yourself of the need to forge a masterpiece. Gather with people who share similar professional ambitions. When you combine the opinions of multiple practitioners, more possibilities and nuance emerge, and there's a focusing effect that comes from performing for a crowd. It's easy to mistake “do fewer things” for “accomplish fewer things” – but this understanding is backward. We work roughly the same number of hours each week regardless of the size of our task lists. Having more commitments simply increases the hours lost to overhead tax – the coordinating activities, such as meetings and email, needed to manage what's on your plate. The pandemic “zoom apocalypse,” in which many knowledge workers found themselves in Zoom meeting all day long, was caused in part by reaching a state in which overhead tax crowded out almost any time to actually complete tasks. Doing fewer things, in other words, makes us better at our jobs–not only psychologically but also economically and creatively.  The Overhead Tax – A key property of overhead tax is that it tends to expand to fill as much time as it's provided. So long as a project is something that you've committed to, and it's not yet complete, it will tend to generate a continual tax in the form of check-in meetings, impromptu email conversations, and plain old mental space. Knowledge workers have no agreed-upon definition of what “productivity” actually means–incredibly unusual compared to other areas of our economy. Lacking a precise definition they defaulted to a crude approximation: pseudo-productivity – using visible activity as a proxy for useful professional accomplishment. Cal argues that the current burnout crisis is due, in part, to the combination of pseudo-productivity with more recent advances in mobile computing and digital communication that made unlimited work available at all times in all places. The result was an impossible internal tug of war, where there was always more to do, and never any hope of catching up. Busy exhaustion itself became your primary signal of usefulness. Slow productivity doesn't ask that you extinguish ambition. Humans derive great satisfaction from being good at what they do and producing useful things. Cal revisits the popular narrative of Jane Austen's writing career; a closer look at her life reveals a powerful case study for a slower approach. Busy Jane Austen was neither happy nor producing memorable work, while unburdened Jane Austen, writing contently at a quiet cottage, after her family decided to withdraw from a busy social calendar, transformed English literature. The goal of Slow Productivity is to propose an entirely new way for you, your small business, or your large employer to think about what it means to get things done; to rescue knowledge work from its increasingly untenable freneticism, and rebuild it to enable you to create things you're proud of without grinding yourself down along the way; and to offer a more humane and sustainable way to integrate professional efforts into a life well lived.
