In our blended DPT curriculum, we interweave psychomotor presence along with cognitive presence in the Community of Inquiry framework. In this episode, Mary Blackinton interviews Tim Miller about his experiences and recommendations for teaching classes with significant psychomotor skills in the blended environment. We explore instructional design concepts related to facilitating psychomotor skill development, as well as best practices on how to encourage practice of skills in a digital environment. Tim is in the dissertation phase for his EdD in Distance Education from University of Florida and is currently conducting research about how students perceive and learn from blended teaching strategies.
In this episode Dr. Melissa Lazinski discusses the Community of Inquiry (COI) model with Dr. Mary Blackinton, founding director of Nova Southeastern University (NSU)-Tampa’s DPT program. Dr. Blackinton has over 20 years experience in PT education. Prior to directing the Tampa DPT program which is taught in a blended format, she taught in NSU’s Ft. Lauderdale DPT program which is taught in a traditional format, and was director of NSU’s transitional DPT program, an online post-professional program. NSU-Tampa's DPT program is the first of its kind, taught in a completely blended format. Dr. Blackinton discusses the decision to use the COI model as the foundation for the program’s development, how it continues to be integrated in to the fabric of the program, and what has been learned in the 7 years since the program’s inception. The COI model as described in Blended Learning in Higher Education (2008, John Wiley & Sons) is a model for blended learning that includes three elements: teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence. In our first episode, podcast hosts Melissa Lazinski, Tim Miller, and Mary Blackinton introduce ourselves and the reason we were inspired to create the Shaken & Stirred podcast. We join you from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Nova Southeastern University-Tampa, a component of the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences. The mission of our podcast is to foster provocative dialog and discourse about blended learning in professional education among educators, students, clinicians, and consumers in order to ultimately enhance teaching, learning, and research about blended learning. In addition, we hope to investigate best practices, caveats, and administrative policies related to planning, implementing, and evaluating courses. We hope this “community of inquiry” engages faculty, students, administrators, and the community in discussions that might shake and stir our understanding of blended learning in professional education.
