He didn't assume I knew something or presumed that he knew better in any way, shape, or form. But by really being authentic and getting to know who the aspiring leaders are in front of you, I think you can really take them to deeper levels of engagement and understanding.” -Tim Cusack   “Listening is really important. Nonjudgmental listening. So if you're in senior leadership and you have some sort of rising star or shooting star or someone who's doing remarkable things, give them a platform to share what they're doing and just honestly listen to how that came about.   Something that a senior leader needs to recognize and say, what are you doing? And how can we help you continue to do that within our district? Because every district has someone that is doing remarkable things. Everyone, every district has some sort of Ruckus Maker that's doing something outside the box, whether it's in their classroom or in their school or in their role. Oftentimes the Ruckus Maker or the ruckus they are making is perceived as negative, when really it may just be a misunderstanding of what they're actually trying to do.I think honestly listening is really important.” -Vince Bustamante    Get the episode transcript here!   Episodes's Resources & Contact Info:   Leader Ready Timothy Cusack: Home Linkedin.Tim-Cusack Linkedin.Vince Bustamante Vince Bustamante (Twitter/X) Tim Cusack Ed. In this episode, Dr. Katie Novak joins us to talk about the new book she has co-written with Dr. Catlin Tucker, Shift Writing Into the Classroom With UDL and Blended Learning. They believe that we need to rethink how we approach writing in school. Dr. Novak, a former writing teacher herself, explains that while teachers are working harder than ever, what we are currently doing is not working. Fewer than 30% of students are meeting grade-level writing proficiency on standardized assessments, and teachers are burning themselves out by bringing large numbers of papers home to grade. On top of this, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made cheating easier, threatening to undercut the integrity of student writing. The solution to these challenges, this book argues, is to shift the writing process into the classroom. Visit AVID Open Access to learn more.

Today on the podcast, I'm glad to welcome Kareem Farah, founder of the Modern Classrooms Project. As a teacher in Washington D.C., Kareem faced problems that many teachers can relate to - students missing class all the time, and classes made up of students at hugely varied levels. He wanted to try something new, because he felt the practices he had been taught were not working. Together with his friend Rob Barnett, he created a new instructional model that took into account the fact that students were approaching the materials from different levels and often, on different days following absences. He now shares his methodology through his non-profit, The Modern Classrooms Project, in use by 58,000 teachers in over 150 countries. In this interview, Kareem and I talk about the blended learning approach of the MCP and how to try it out for yourself, and dig deep into how to combine this approach with creative practices and projects.
