I have an in-depth chat with Ben about corporate culture and how they largely ignore people with addictions (myself included) yet they are willing to help those who state they have a mental illness. Leon opens up about being raised in an Asian family in Sydney. He talks about how hard it was for him, at an all-white Catholic school being the only coloured kid who was also gay. He describes how his drinking was very lonely and how his pop career came to a shattering halt when he moved to London to find that the record company had gone bust. Leon is celebrating 1 year sober today and uses LGBT specific groups for his recovery which has helped him find a new sense of self. He is loving his life and that was all from sobriety and the support of his husband. Paul speaks about his time in the steel industry, heavy drinking from his twenties and how it all seemed very normal at the time. The story progresses when his drinking turns to morning drinking, the withdrawals he would have from alcohol if he didn't top up and how he got into recovery. Paul lost his brother to suicide in September 2019 and we both open up about our own times where suicide was an option and how we want more men to talk openly about when they are feeling shit. To be able to talk openly about your feelings is to start the road to recovery. I have been following Craig on Instagram for a number of months, and you can see how much he is loving life at the moment now he is sober. That's what inspired me to have him on the show to talk about his own sober journey and help shed the light on the trials and tribulations of going sober in Dublin (or anywhere in the world for that matter). He lost his dad to heroin addiction and that wasn't enough to stop him drinking at the time, and Craig has completed turned his life around and now turns up daily for the people he loves. Tom speaks openly about his absent father growing up, moving to Australia where he got into using ICE (meth) and how sobriety has allowed him to be a better person, parent and colleague. Tom discusses how he originally gave up alcohol but continued to use cocaine and pills for a further 8 months before finally realising he needed to give up the drugs after yet another late night of snorting cocaine around some random person house (as we have all done!). I have the privilege of speaking with Shannon who shares openly for the first time about his traumas and struggles growing up as a gay male in an adopted Southern Baptiste family. He speaks about how drugs and alcohol were his way of dealing with his trauma but he also shares the traumas that occurred as a result of drinking and drugging. Shannon highlights how difficult (and unfair) life can be, even during his sobriety he has had to overcome so many painful events in his life, how he stayed sober during this time is truly inspiring. He speaks about what sobriety has given him, the support he got from his husband and how he didn't go to AA but use an addiction counsellor to help him to become sobriety. I am literally inspiring to live my best life after listening to Shannon and he is an incredible human being. I speak to the truly inspiring Hayley from @so.thirty on my IGTV series. She opens up about her diagnosis at a young age and how that contributed to her drinking heavily on nights out and using alcohol as a way to forget about the truth that she had to face. Hayley admits for the first time in this interview, the true impact that drinking had on her mental health and how this shielded her from actually facing up to her diagnosis of Charcote Marie Tooth condition (motor neuron condition). Hayley has been inspiring my own sobriety and she was the very first sober account that I followed on Instagram, so thank you to Hayley for opening my eyes up to such a powerful community. We also talk about her re-lapse whilst in AA and how she came back stronger from it. Fitness is a big part of both of our lives and Tia talks through how her drive for marathons and triathlons comes from her fighting spirit that got her through her recovery. I just wanted to celebrate the fact that I have got my first business loan approved after going through debt relief in 2016. Something that at the time, I couldn't see past, but the last 4.5 years have been incredibly challenging from a financial perspective as it's a daily reminder of my troubled past. This is my first podcast where I talk openly about my addiction, recovery and how I am building a life that I never believed I could attain in addiction. I hope the podcasts provide hope and inspiration for people that listen as I know the biggest thing that made me realise I needed help was listening to addicts and relating to their former lives. I talk about my addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling in a particularly dark time for me when I was 28 and how rehab saved my life. I talk about my experience of going to Alcoholics anonymous and doing the 12 step programme. I also talk about how I feel out of favour with the programme and found sobriety connection in other ways. Sobriety is an amazing power to have and it has given me the strength and courage to start my own business, Fitology. Through Life, Fitness and Nutrition coaching I want to help others make the same transformational changes they want to with their own lives as I have with mine. I am so grateful for my recovery, my parents for supporting me and if you need help, reach out. The worst thing I did in my addiction was not ask for help sooner. This podcast is dedicated to the loving support that my parents have shown me throughout my life and without them, I wouldn't be here today. Much Love Sean.
