In this episode of the Sharing Without Shame podcast, host Donna Marston sits down with Barb Nangle, a former people-pleaser turned boundaries coach, who shares her deeply personal journey from codependency to empowerment. Barb opens up about a pivotal moment in her life when helping a homeless friend led her to hit a codependent bottom, ultimately guiding her into the world of recovery through Codependents Anonymous (CODA) and later Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families (ACA). She describes the transformative impact of understanding codependency and relational trauma, and how discovering the concept of “reparenting” changed her life.As a podcast host herself, Barb brings heartfelt insight and wisdom, especially for those who find themselves over-giving, rescuing, or enabling loved ones—often under the guise of care. She unpacks the difference between healthy helping and unhealthy rescuing, shares tools for self-care, and explains how boundaries rooted in personal values can lead to emotional freedom. Whether you're a parent of someone in active addiction or someone struggling with boundaries, Barb's story offers a compassionate yet practical roadmap to healing and wholeness.Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/higherpowercoaching/Website: https://higherpowercc.com/Sponsors: Experience Inner Peace with Calming Therapy BraceletsWebsite: https://snappbandz.com/Use SWOS or SharingWithoutShame code Thank you for tuning in! Quick question: how many brain cells would you happily trade for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc? Most of us would answer “none,” yet that is the quiet swap that takes place each time we drink. For decades, alcohol marketing painted scenes of witty toasts and genius writers crafting best-sellers with a tumbler by the keyboard. Reality tells a duller truth: MRI scanners now show measurable shrinkage of the brain in people who average one drink a day. Cognitive tests confirm slower learning and patchy recall.Ready to quit drinking? Imagine, no more hangovers! This means taking a proactive approach to our lives rather than reacting to what is happening. It means that we are being thoughtful, giving conscious consideration to what's going on around us, and making conscious decisions instead of reacting based on habits or patterns from the past. This week's episode 305 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is about how to go from reactor to responder: breaking free from old patterns! Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include:The difference between reacting and responding, and why it's a significant paradigm shift in recovery.
