In this episode of Trending in Education, host Mike Palmer welcomes Tara Chklovski, the founder and CEO of Technovation, a global nonprofit that has been at the intersection of AI and education since 2016. Tara shares her journey from growing up in India to pursuing a PhD in aerospace engineering and eventually launching a mobile entrepreneurship program just two years after the iPhone debuted. The conversation dives into the Technovation accelerator model, a three-month program for girls and young women ages 8 to 24. Tara explains how the program empowers students to identify real-world problems in their communities and build tech-based startups to solve them. We discuss the importance of fostering a problem-solving mindset, the critical role of human mentorship in an AI-driven world, and why the "personalized learning" trend might be too narrow a lens for the future of education. Jeffrey Deskovic's life changed forever when he was convicted of a murder he did not commit at just 17 years old. He maintained his innocence for the next 16 years and then, with the help of the Innocence Project, the real person responsible was finally caught and Jeff was released from prison. Now you may be asking yourself, 'Hey, how is this a GOOD story?' The answer is found in what Jeff did after this all happened: He went to law school, became an attorney and founded the Deskovic Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the exoneration of the wrongfully convicted, their recovery, and reform of the system. This is one person's journey from the darkest of places to finding and creating his own light and we gotta tell ya, it doesn't get much more inspiring than this. Before Stan Andrisse was sentenced to ten years in prison for a Class A drug felony, the prosecutor had asked for a life sentence, suggesting that the defendant was irredeemable. In the years since, Stan, now "Dr. Andrisse" has proved this attorney and many others wrong. While in prison, he discovered an interest in science and endocrinology and today is a tenured professor at the Howard University College of Medicine. To create similar opportunities and career paths for others who are or have been incarcerated, he founded the non-profit From Prison Cells to PhD. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Dr. Stan Andrisse This chapter introduces Dr. Stan Andrisse a tenured faculty member at Howard University and the founder of "From Prison Cells to PhD." 02:40 Early Life and Incarceration Dr. Andrisse discusses his childhood in Ferguson, Missouri, and how he became involved in illegal activities from a young age. He describes his progression from minor trouble to serious drug dealing, leading to multiple felony convictions and facing a potential life sentence under the three-strikes law. 07:58 The Incarceration of the Mind Stan reflects on the profound psychological impact of being labeled a career criminal and facing a lengthy prison sentence. He emphasizes that the 'incarceration of the mind' is more damaging than physical imprisonment and describes how a mentor helped him begin to overcome this despair. 12:58 Mentor and Path to Education Stan details the pivotal role of Dr. Barry Bodie, who supported him during his sentencing and continued to mentor him in prison. He explains how reading scientific articles, prompted by his father's death from diabetes, liberated his mind and ignited his passion for science, leading to his acceptance into St. Louis University despite multiple rejections. 22:33 Talent, Opportunity, and Innovation Stan discusses his philosophy that talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not, using his own journey as an example. He highlights the untapped brilliance within incarcerated individuals, arguing that with resources and opportunities, their innovative problem-solving skills could benefit society greatly. 28:40 From Prison Cells to PhD: The Organization Stan explains how his personal transformation inspired the creation of "From Prison Cells to PhD," a nonprofit scaling the mentorship and resource provision he received. He shares the organization's three core tenets: peer mentorship, community building, and connecting people to resources, detailing its significant success in helping formerly incarcerated individuals pursue higher education and careers. 34:07 Impact and Pen Pal Program Stan discusses the remarkable matriculation and GPA rates of participants in his "From Prison Cells to PhD" program. He explains how the organization reaches incarcerated individuals through partnerships with correctional facilities and its impactful pen pal program, which provides a vital connection to the outside world and instills hope, preventing recidivism. 41:35 The Drive to Succeed and Give Back Stan highlights the unique motivation and grit of formerly incarcerated individuals, driven by a desire to prove their worth and contribute positively to society. He notes that their experiences with hardship often translate into loyalty, hard work, and a commitment to making communities better and safer. 45:29 Breaking Chains, Building Futures, and Final Thoughts Stan discusses his new book, "Breaking Chains, Building Futures," which features diverse stories of individuals helped by his organization. He encourages listeners to support "From Prison Cells to PhD" through their website and social media, emphasizing the continued inspiration he draws from his father's motto: "It's Never Too Late to Do Good."

As I get a bit older, I have taken the role of an "older doc" in the workplace, using my morning meetings to provide words of wisdom, encouragement, and inspiration to the team. This is because, for many of our team members, our workplaces may be the best part of their day or week. They may not be getting support from anyone else. During meetings, take a few minutes to offer advice that may be helpful in their personal lives and not just their work lives. Show them that you care and want to help them live their best lives. Doing this will result in a much more engaged and thankful team.
January is often perceived as a slow month in Hollywood, but in reality it's one of the most strategic windows of the year for filmmakers. On this episode, GG Hawkins and guests Ana Liza Muravina and John Lamm unpack how the industry “wakes up” in early 2026, what that means for creative careers, and how artists can structure their time, their projects, and their expectations to thrive amid shifting economic and ecosystem forces. From understanding industry seasonality, permission structures, and macro trends in distribution to practical strategies for developing and releasing work, this conversation offers both mindset shifts and concrete guidance for filmmakers navigating careers in the current landscape. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guests Ana Liza Muravina and John Lamm discuss: Breaking down the idea of a “Hollywood shutdown” and why January becomes a key moment of restart, planning, and opportunity. How to contextually plan your writing year and align creative output with industry cycles (inspired by ideas from Final Draft's annual planning guide). Why building structure as an independent artist (even without external deadlines) empowers your career and creative focus. “Permission structures” in the industry — what they are, how they shape opportunity, and how filmmakers can navigate or build them. The importance of community, cohorts, and trusted feedback systems for career sustainability and perspective. How macroeconomic forces, consolidation in the streaming market, and attention economy shifts are reshaping how films get financed, distributed, and found. Practical project strategies — from refining scripts based on audience/readers to building a tailored outreach atlas for producers and executives. The value of aligning ambition with realistic pathways — creating work you can make now while aiming for larger goals down the line. Inspiring perspectives on why now may be an era of opportunity for scrappy independent filmmaking. Memorable Quotes: “Most filmmakers think January is slow, but quietly it's one of the most strategic months of the year.” “It's one of those weird things … every now and then when I zoom like 10,000 feet back … it's not necessarily indictment on your art.” “You see it … LA is the concentration of us. It's artists who are so good at what they do just waiting for someone to give them permission to do what they do well… And the answer generally is unless you decide to stride and do it yourself, no one gives you permission.” “Don't get too bogged down in the how, the strategy … let's make movies, y'all. Let's just do it.” Guests: Ana Liza Muravina John Lamm Resources Mentioned: The Current: Less Chaos, More Momentum (On the Circuit) How to Plan Your Entire Screenwriting Year: A Month-by-Month Guide (Final Draft) Video: Preparing for the Creator Economy Apocalypse (with Chris Gethard) Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. ABOUT BOTTOM OF THE PYRAMIDYoung dancer Nia Sioux was only nine years old when she stepped into stardom as one of the original cast members of Lifetime's reality TV show Dance Moms. Nia learned new choreography week after week and competed against dancers from across the country as well as at her own studio. Perhaps her greatest obstacle was suffering through her dance teacher's ranking of the girls against each other in her infamous pyramid, where Nia spent the majority of her time on the bottom-all in front of an audience of millions. But there was much that viewers didn't see. How her experiences in the studio went far beyond what made it into the show. How she was ostracized for not fitting into an aesthetic that wasn't designed for girls like her. How her friendships and her mental health crumbled under the strain of the show. How she lost control of her story and her voice. But don't be fooled-this is a story about resilience. Nia is not looking for pity, sympathy, or validation as she reflects on her experiences. Instead, she is choosing to use her story as a celebration of triumph. Nia finally gets to tell her story in her own way and in her own words. In this captivating memoir, Nia reclaims both the spotlight and her narrative. In addition to going behind the scenes of the seven seasons of Dance Moms, she shows how she fought against the negative perceptions that dominated her tween and teen years and emerged as a confident young woman secure in her talents and her direction. Anyone who has ever felt misunderstood, overlooked, or stuck at the bottom of the pyramid will be inspired by Nia's story of overcoming. "Despite barriers and constant naysayers, assumptions and criticisms, only you know who you are inside and out," Nia says. "And you have the power to create your own narrative, your own level of success."Nia provides a unique perspective on:. Overcoming Adversity: From navigating the toxic environment of competitive dance and reality TV to her harrowing battle with Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy (RND).. Confronting Racism & Body Shaming: Nia speaks candidly about being the only Black girl on the team, facing microaggressions, and the constant pressure that impacted her self-worth.. Inspiring a Generation: The book is a powerful message for young people, especially young Black girls, about knowing your value, protecting your peace, and pursuing your dreams unapologetically. ABOUT NIA SIOUXNia Sioux is a dancer, singer, and actress who has performed on the small screen and in live performances, proving to be one of today's most popular triple threats. Send us a textWhat if the hardest season of your life became the one that finally taught you how to live? We sit down with Tashina Dunham to trace a path from a tough Wisconsin childhood and the grit of team sports to a divorce that demanded self-work, and a love story written in the shadow of terminal illness. This isn't a highlight reel. It's the real-time lessons of presence, faith, and self-worth learned the hard way and shared with uncommon honesty.Tashina shows how sports can wire us for life's fourth quarter: pushing through fatigue, trusting teammates, and playing the next play. She opens up about leaving a marriage to grow, then choosing to love a man whose prognosis forced radical clarity. The shift from frantic fixing to simply sitting together changed everything. In hospital corridors, she discovered a calm that looked like prayer and felt like breath, and a community that showed faith as warmth rather than judgment. We explore the quiet tools that heal: meditation, sound baths, grounding in nature, gardening as ritual. We talk about looking strangers in the eye, calling the cashier by name, and turning off the loud news to meet the human next door. Tashina's definition of a win is simple and powerful: a conversation where someone feels safe enough to tell their story. Along the way, she offers a mirror test for leadership and healing alike—being able to look at yourself and say, I'm proud of you.If you're craving resilience, spiritual calm, and the courage to be present, this conversation will meet you where you are. Listen, share with someone who needs hope, and tell us: what small act grounds you today? Have you ever felt like you're doing everything "right" in your career, but something still feels off? You're not alone. In this episode, I'm diving into one of my favorite topics — your Zone of Genius. This is where your natural strengths, passions, and most meaningful contributions come together, and discovering it can bring a whole new sense of clarity, energy, and joy to your work. I'll walk you through the four zones we typically operate in and explain why the Zone of Excellence, while often rewarding, can also leave you feeling stuck or unfulfilled. I'm also sharing real examples from physicians who found compelling new directions by leaning into their Zone of Genius. If you're at the crossroads, this episode is here to help you start moving toward more purpose and alignment in your next chapter. In this episode we're talking about: What your Zone of Genius is and how to start identifying it The common trap of staying in your Zone of Excellence Why external success doesn't always equal personal fulfillment What intrinsic rewards are and why they matter Inspiring stories from physicians who leaned into their genius A simple framework to help uncover your personality, top skills, and ideal impact Reflective questions to help you reconnect with what energizes you Links for this episode: Book recommendations: The Genius Zone: The Breakthrough Process to End Negative Thinking and Live in True Creativity by Gay Hendricks The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level―A Transformative Guide to Overcoming Fears and False Beliefs for Personal Growth and Success by Gay Hendricks Curious about your Enneagram type? The Enneagram is one of my favorite tools for helping clients better understand their strengths, motivations, and unique patterns — especially when you're exploring your Zone of Genius. I recommend the RHETI test from The Enneagram Institute. It's the most accurate version I've found and the one I use in my own coaching work. The test costs $20 and takes about 40 minutes to complete. Anthony Dyer is a veteran of United States Air Force where he served as a Combat Special Missions Aviator for two decades plus. He flew high-risk missions in some of the world's most danger war zones and when he came home to retire, he found the transition back to non-military life a struggle. To put it bluntly, Anthony spiraled into a very dark place. But from that very same place, he found his voice in the form of taking pen to paper, writing it all down, releasing it all in the process. He's now an author and mental health advocate, using his life experience to help others. As he writes in his novel, Moon Child: A Memoir: “You can train for combat, but not what comes after.” Good side note: We recorded this episode on Veteran's Day - which was not planned but turned out to be the perfect time to do it. Gotta love when the universe lines these kinda good things up. ________________________ Steve's third book in his cozy mystery series, THE DOG WALKING DETECTIVES is finally here: SEASON'S SLAYINGS!
