Sitting in a red and white circus tent in Columbia, Tennessee I was confronted with a question, how could I ever want more?
Obedience isn’t how we earn love, but it certainly is how we respond to it.
While we often know the risks associated with certain things; sometimes its the beauty of those very things that pull us in. It took a colony of thousands of bird mites to remind me of this truth.
Jose wakes up on a park bench each day in NYC's Tompkins Square Park with a choice, and he recognizes his one and only need…Jesus. May we face our life and situations the same way.
A few weeks back we were rear-ended while we were out on a date, setting the stage for a lesson about the gift of grace in our lives as well as how to extend that same grace to others.
It's easy to find ourselves becoming 'okay' with not being well, be it complacency or be it comfort. Jesus asked the disabled man who had been by the pool of Bethesda, "Do you want to be well?" Could it be that what Jesus was really asking him within this question was do you really want what being well is going to bring you?
Why? Why would God allow innocent lives in Nashville to again be taken hands of a man filled with evil?? Our understanding of God dramatically affects how we process and navigate tragedy in life, and it also dramatically affects how others see God through it.
The past few weeks we’ve been looking at some of the most important questions Jesus asked… We started with the question “Who is Jesus?” From there we rolled to “What Are You Looking For”? and last week “Why were you looking for me?” But answering these questions alone isn’t enough because he has another question for us. Once we find ourselves at his feet we have to answer the same question that Jesus has asked since his first followers were with him.
Have you ever experienced moments in life when you've seemingly lost sight of Jesus amidst the pains, trials, struggles or even simple routines of life? Just like when Mary and Joseph 'lost' Jesus at 12 years old, He was found then just as He is found now...in the middle of His Father's business.
Have you ever been lost, or lost something important before? The question, "What are you looking for?", brings along with it a sense of help and of relief. In life, those core things we are looking for are found in one place. Jesus is asking us what we are looking for, and inviting us to "Come, and see."
It is tempting to judge a book by its cover, to allow what is being said about others or about God to formulate our own definition of either. Instead, may we allow relationship and personal experience be the lens for which we look at others and God through.
Reading a page with zero margins, filled from left to right and top to bottom, can be overwhelming. Margins exist to bring clarity and focus to the content on the page. May we be willing to create margins in our own lives as well, margins of rest, so that the content of our lives can find focus and clarity.
Sometimes those things we are asked to do that seem so inconsequential are the very things that can have ripple effects that literally change the world, and when it comes to our obedience in those things there may be no Plan B.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people." (Colossians 3:23) For Nik Wallenda, that looks a lot like walking on a wire over Niagara Falls. What does it look like for you?
I love watching people who were completely sold out to compete in the Olympics...it is captivating to those who watch them. The question is… do we live that way? Do we live in a way that others look at us and are captivated by our commitment, by our zeal, by our lifestyle and our sacrifice?
