    Today's guest is Dr. Michael Schofield. Mike is a New Zealand sports scientist and track and field coach with a PhD in biomechanics and strength and conditioning. He has coached athletes to Olympic, World Championship, and Commonwealth Games finals in the throws, while also developing national-level sprinters and weightlifters. His strength and conditioning work spans multiple sports, from golf to stand-up paddleboarding. Mike has done substantial research in, and is a subject matter expert in the role of connective tissues in athletic movement and force production. This podcast explores the crucial functions of connective tissue in athletic performance. We examine how tendons, ligaments, and fascia support movement, prevent injuries, and contribute to force production.     Over 1,300 athletes from 12 countries gathered at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco for the first-ever Gay Games, on 28th August, 1982.  Intended as the “Gay Olympics,” the event had to change its name at the last minute after the US Olympic Committee sued. But the opening ceremony was electric, with none other than Tina Turner performing at a pivotal moment in her career - a bold and unprecedented move for a superstar at a gay event in the early ‘80s. The brainchild of Olympic decathlete Tom Waddell, the Games were intended to show that you could be openly gay and still achieve greatness - even in a city and community plagued by HIV. Waddell prioritized inclusion over nationalism, having athletes march by city instead of country, and selected a Black gay man and cancer survivor, Richard Hunter, to light the cauldron - symbolizing unity and resilience. Stockton's journey to the NBA began in relative obscurity in his hometown of Spokane, Washington.After four years at Gonzaga in which he was the WCAC Player of the Year in 1984, Stockton then impressed the coaches of the U.S. Olympic Team that summer. Though he didn't survive the final cut, the Point Guard showed enough promise to be a first round pick in that June's NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz.In Utah, Stockton formed a lethal “Pick and Roll” duo with future Hall of Fame teammate, Karl Malone.During his 19-year career with Utah, Stockton was a 10x All-Star, led the league in assists nine times and became the all-time NBA leader in assists and steals.     In this first episode of a multi-part Zone 7 series on the 1996 Olympic Park bombing, CSI Sheryl McCollum talks with her longtime colleague Irv Brandt, a former Atlanta police officer and U.S. marshal. Brandt was on duty when the bomb exploded in Centennial Park. He recalls pulling the injured to safety, protecting bomb evidence, and witnessing the moment security guard Richard Jewell went from hero to suspect. The investigation later led to Eric Rudolph, a domestic terrorist tied to multiple bombings. Listeners will learn how frontline officers responded in the first minutes and what lessons still guide law enforcement today. Irv Brandt is a retired U.S. Marshal, a former Atlanta police officer, and a U.S. Navy veteran. He served as attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica and worked with Interpol and the Department of Justice, investigating cases in more than 50 countries. He is the author of the Jack Solo crime fiction series and has appeared on America’s Most Wanted, Escape to Vegas, and Crime Stories with Nancy Grace. The odds were wild. We both chose the same beach, at the same time, from different corners of San Diego.     Saw this post that helped me to wake up - along with my coffee - to remind me that I need to focus in on how I want my day to go!!  It's from Kevin DeShazo (@KevinDeShazo) shares this gem:  “Your future self will either bear the burden of your inconsistency today, or reap the rewards of your commitment today. You get to choose. Show up on purpose.”  This hit me this morning (morning of this recording) and it really changed my perspective of the day for me. I was also listening to “The Daily Coach” podcast - latest episode HERE, where it was shared about the “rule of thirds” which is coming from an Olympic coach and it basically says that during your days of working towards something, you will have a roughly each a third of good days, average days and crappy days. All three of them are to remind you that you are going for something great and to not let whatever day you are having get in the way of success.  Especially the crappy days - they are telling you the great thing you are going for, is not supposed to be easy - but it's worth it! I needed that reminder as well this morning. It's my choice as to how I will show up!     Shannon Miller is one of the most decorated American gymnasts in history, winning seven Olympic medals and becoming an icon of the 1990s gymnastics era. Beyond her success on the balance beam and floor, she faced one of her greatest challenges outside the gym. In 2011, Shannon was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer.     What does it mean to create movement that lasts a lifetime—work that outlives trends, resonates across genres, and moves audiences for generations? World-renowned choreographer Lar Lubovitch joined the studio for a mid-month episode to talk about his creative process and his upcoming projects!For more than six decades, Lar has shaped the landscape of dance with works that are both technically masterful and deeply human. His own company, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, founded in 1968, has created more than 120 works performed in more than 40 countries.Lar says that from the moment he started dancing, he knew he would be a choreographer. But dance is a journey he began relatively late at 19. He spoke about the freedom his later start in dance gave him to experiment, mix styles, and create work that bridges the divide between ballet and modern dance. All of this propelled him into success as a groundbreaking choreographer. In this interview, he discusses the intersections of his background as a painter and sculptor with his choreography, which he views similarly in brushstrokes and shapes that illustrate the music. He shares that the initial spark of joy seeing dancers move on stage that inspired him to explore dance in the first place is still inspiring him to this day. And he talks about how, at 82, he sees himself as an adult dancer needing to stay engaged with dance even while his experience with the art form evolves as he ages.He also spoke about his work on Broadway, including staging the original Broadway production of Into the Woods, which earned him a Tony nomination, The Red Shoes, winning an Astaire Award, and the Tony-winning revival of The King and I. He has also made contributions to choreography in the field of ice-dancing, creating dances for Olympic skaters and choreographing two ice-dances for television: The Sleeping Beauty (PBS) and The Planets (A&E, nominated for an International Emmy Award, a Cable Ace Award, and a Grammy Award). Finally, he shares the vision behind his new program, Art of the Solo, in which his solo works are brought to life by a cast of dancers as part of The Guggenheim's Works & Process Series in New York. It left many wondering if last year's Olympic silver medalists had slipped from his form. But back at Hayward Field just a couple weeks ago in his element, Rooks gave the answer. He was calm through the opening kilometers of the U.S. Championship final, unhurried as the laps ticked by. He moved up lap after lap until he was finally leading – and he never gave that lead back.A 59-second last lap sealed his third straight U.S. Championship title in 8:26.56, fending off his training partner Dan Michalski and veteran Bernard Keter.
