HI I'm Robia Fleming and on this podcast of ‘Who Asked You Tattoo' we're going to discuss how to tip your tattoo artist. There are 3 types of categories: 1) Street shops – typically you do no need an appointment to get a tattoo. They are usually located in a busy area. These are considered “walk in shops”. In this situation this is the most important place to tip. Anything under $100 should be minimum of 20% tip. 2) Boutique shops – these are shops typically have artists that only tattoo by appointment. These are considered “specialty artists”. Usually you can't just walk in and get an appointment. As far as tipping they are not relying on their tip compared to a street shop. But tipping is always appreciated. If you have a good relationship with the artist, just ask. $100-$500 15%-20% over $500 it's best to tip what you can afford especially if you go back to that artist on a regular basis. 3) Private studios – I run a private studio and my personal belief is if you don't tip me that is fine. Private studios go above and beyond to provide you with a lot of essentials. We want you to enjoy a peaceful day of getting something beautiful put on your body. Usually, a private studio has a minimum free for a tattoo and doing longer/large scale work. It is best to show appreciation of time spent with your artist and when they weren't with you prepping for your tattoo. To summarize – should you tip your artist? Yes. This can be done in gifts too. Hand made gifts are truly what I love. Be gracious and be appreciative we are putting art on your body for the rest of your life.

Why you should never DM, email or ask a tattoo artist for a quick quote. "hey how much for ..." Many tattoo artists are sent an image, maybe even two images with the question "how much?" or "I want roses down my arm .. how much?" This happens daily for tattoo artists and is a big cause of frustration. The first thing we think is I have a million more questions to ask before I can price this piece. Representational tattoos mean representing loved ones, family members, significant milestones, how we want to feel about ourselves, strengths, weaknesses. For example representing a family member using floral or lions for strengths for men. Utilizing popular imagery is not a bad thing but if you're just grabbing an image that appears to represent strength to other people you may need some guidance on what to ask your tattoo artist.

After a day of consultations with clients. 5 people in a row asked same questions in the same order. I thought to myself, "Is this information not readily available?" I guess not! This is about Do tattoos hurt? You would think this is an obvious answer but it’s not.. it’s also a very valid question. What people are really asking is; What should I expect? Here I will discuss: Pain tolerance and endorphins Mental pain tolerance. Pain based on placement of tattoo. Black and gray vs. Color and full saturation vs light shading or line work. Plus you'll learn some tips to do the night before a tattoo to make it less painful.
