The University of Oregon is leading a collaborative effort to study earthquakes and conduct research focused on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Participating institutions include the University of Washington, Stanford University and Virginia Tech. We hear more about the new Cascadia Region Earthquake Science Center from Diego Melgar, an associate professor of earth sciences at the university and a director of the center.
Diego Melgar is a guitarist based out of Miami that incubates the growing jazz scene within the city. With 5 different musical projects to pick from, Diego is able to give a taste of everything he's involved in spanning from playing jazz nights at the best bars, running an experimental improvisation group for the community, and releasing cassette tapes for his different projects via Technique Records. He emphasizes the constant importance of collaboration within the community, touches on the wonders and confusions of the internet, and speaks of his time abroad and the quartet he started in Estonia while we play a bit from each project. Whether it's his band, trio, or feature, Diego has made his passion and talent clear to Miami and internationally.
University of Oregon Assistant Professor Diego Melgar, an earthquake expert explains how to understand magnitude, as well as the potential effects of a major earthquake on Eugene, Oregon, and how researchers are working on a tsunami early warning system for the West Coast. Most people think that in the United States, the area around the San Andreas Fault poses the highest risk for a large earthquake. But the risk for a "great earthquake" and tsunami is highest in the Pacific Northwest. Join seismologist Diego Melgar and learn about the risks, the geologic forces behind the potential for a truly massive U.S. earthquake, and efforts underway to build warning systems for the western U.S. Series: "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" [Science] [Show ID: 29994]
