I FINALY played this one for the first time and damned if it isn't the most impressive video game I've ever played.I didn't love Vice City back in the day and kinda checked out from the GTA series after that. But hosting this show got me to play San Andreas, GTA IV, and now GTA V, and with each entry I like the series more and more. IV and San Andreas are fun, but V takes it to a whole new level. Michael, Trevor, and Franklin are awesome, the missions are entertaining, the story is interesting, and the world of this game is just, I know I keep saying it, impressive! Our GTA guy, Andre, joins me this week to break down the story mode of Grand Theft Auto V. We spoil everything, get into the quest for The Big One, talk about our favourite plot points and side missions, and heap as much praise as we could squeeze into a 75 minute review onto GTA V this week. A rare-perfect score is in contention on this episode. And before we theft autos, I put together another (super-sized) edition of the Infamous Intro! This week we talk about the crazy number of remakes and remastered we're getting these days. Did I score Mario kart World too high when I reviewed it?? And what 5 games do I consider 'must buys' from the last couple years??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 Rockstar games: Red Dead Revolver, Bully, and Manhunt. Thanks for getting us to 350!!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Sam Harris speaks with Michael Osterholm about his new book, The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics. They discuss the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the major mistakes made in the public health response—including lockdowns, school closures, and border policies—the science of airborne versus droplet transmission, the promise and controversy of mRNA vaccines, the reality of vaccine adverse events, the politicization of vaccine hesitancy, and the erosion of scientific institutions like the CDC and HHS under the Trump administration. Looking forward, they explore the characteristics of a future, more deadly pandemic—what Osterholm calls “The Big One”—and what we should be doing to prepare for it. The COVID-19 pandemic was a devastating global event, killing more than seven million people, straining the fabric of societies, and shaking the foundations of the world economy. And yet, as horrifying as the experience was, COVID-19 was not “The Big One” — the dreaded pandemic that haunts the nightmares of epidemiologists and public health officials everywhere. That far deadlier outbreak is still ahead of us, and it will reshape life across the planet unless we're ready for it. In this episode, Dr. Michael Osterholm, one of the world's leading infectious disease experts, explains what we got wrong, what we got right, and what it all reveals about our preparedness for the next great pandemic. Michael Osterholm is Regents Professor and McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health at the University of Minnesota, where he founded and directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP). An internationally renowned epidemiologist with fifty years of experience, he's led major outbreak investigations worldwide and authored over 350 papers. He served as a U.S. State Department science envoy from 2017-2019. His new book is The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics.

In today's episode, we're joined by Kevin Das, Senior Consultant at New Frontier Minerals, who sit right at the crossroads of the energy transition and geopolitics, with a portfolio of heavy rare earths and copper project, including their Harts Range project in the Northern Territory, and their copper asset at their Big One project. We're going to get Kevin's overview of the company, its assets, and why heavy rare earths matter. We discuss the company's appointment of GeoDrill Australia and what that means for their Harts Range project as they move toward their maiden drilling program. We'll also explore the company's vision, including the path to fast-tracking copper production at Big One, also look at funding strategies across both projects, and most importantly, why investors should be paying attention now KEY TAKEAWAYS New Frontier Minerals has a portfolio focused on two key projects: the Hearts Range heavy rare earth project in the Northern Territory and the Big One copper project in Northwest Queensland Heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium are economically superior and strategically important The Big One copper project is considered the company's most advanced asset. New Frontier Minerals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a neighbouring company, Austral Resources, to explore the possibility of toll-treating their ore at the nearby Mount Kelly processing facility The company is making progress on both projects. They have recently appointed a drilling contractor to begin their maiden drill program at the Hearts Range project BEST MOMENTS "Not all rare earths are created equal, and when you get one rare earth, you get all 15 of your rare earths." "Rare earths have become a bit of a household name." "If you're going to play copper, it's definitely one of the places to be." "If we can get one of those projects to work through a discovery or development, if not both of them, I think there's definitely going to be a rerating and a real value add for all shareholders." Join me for my next live video in the app.Peter Hotez and I discuss his new book, co-authored with Michael Mann, SCIENCE UNDER SEIGE, on the anti-science superstorm culminating from the climate crisis, the Covid pandemic, and a vast interconnected network that has waged a direct assault on scientific truth.During our conversation we trace history of priors in civilization, such as Lysenko and Stalinism in the last century. And acknowledge the future role of A.I. for promoting infinite disinformation. Beyond human suffering and direct health outcome consequences (such as Red Covid), the toll this is taking on the career of young scientists, universities, public health agencies, and loss of public trust are reviewed. The interdependent role of the media and the wellness industry is touched on.The book and our conversation puts forth a call to arms, potential solutions, including the need to move away from invisible scientists and political activism. Thanks for listening to Ground Truths podcasts and reading the analytic posts. In case you missed any, these are a few recent and related ones:Podcasts with Michael Osterholm and Sanjay Gupta on their new books—The Big One and It Doesn't Have to Hurt, respectively.Next up is Charlotte Blease and her new book Dr. Bot on where we are headed with medical A.I.If you found this interesting PLEASE share it!That makes the work involved in putting these together especially worthwhile. All content on Ground Truths—its newsletters, analyses, and podcasts, are free, open-access.Paid subscriptions are voluntary and all proceeds from them go to support Scripps Research. When the next pandemic hits, will we be ready? That's the question at the center of University of Minnesota epidemiologist Mike Osterholm's new book, “The Big One.” And his answer is sobering.Osterholm joined Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas for a blunt and personal assessment of what went right and what went wrong during the COVID-19 pandemic. He's insistent that if we don't learn the lessons of the last pandemic, we will be even less prepared for the next one. Here are five key takeaways from their conversation.1. Public health communication can't just be factual.Osterholm is the founding director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and has decades of experience tracking and researching outbreaks. He said the big lesson for public health leaders is that kindness and humility have to be forefront as they communicate.Humility is important, he told Miller, because “people mistakenly think that science is truth. It's not. Science is the pursuit of truth.” He said the scientific community needs to do a better job explaining what we know now and how that might change as research continues. But the bigger lesson, for him, was that a “just the facts, ma'am” approach isn't effective. Public health messages need to resonate with people on a personal level.Early in the pandemic, he broke down crying on his own podcast after a close colleague's death. That human moment ended up being a connection point for people.“It wasn't about the factual stuff I talked about,” Osterholm said. “It was about relating to people on that emotional level of what we were experiencing and how we reach out to each other. So the podcast became more and more of a blending of the science — what's in the head — with concern for what's in the heart.”2. When we know what stops transmission, go all-in on that. Once we knew that COVID-19 was an aerosol, Osterholm said, it should have shifted how we thought about transmission.“We spent millions of dollars on useless things like Plexiglass shields. I kept telling people: If you can put a cigarette on this side of it and smell it, you're getting hit.”The only thing that really stops COVID-19 is a well-fitting N95 mask, said Osterholm. Instead of wasting time and money on hygiene theater and cloth masks, we should have “initiated a Manhattan Project-like activity to find the same kind of respiratory protection in something that's wearable, something that could be washed and reused over and over again, something that people could communicate in and not feel claustrophobic.”“And do you know how much we've invested in that?” he asked. “Zero.”3. Mandates aren't a magic solution. While he absolutely believes the COVID vaccines saved lives and are safe, Osterholm isn't sold on the efficacy of mandates.“In some cases, I think we set ourselves back with a mandate,” he told Miller. “If you want to turn someone off so you never have a chance to reach them, tell them they have to do it.”A better way, he believes, is to give people agency.“What you find is, that if you actually work with people and say, ‘OK, you're not going to get it now, but let me give you more information,' you actually get more people vaccinated. And the whole point for me is: I want the most number of people vaccinated.”4. The lack of a nonpartisan reports to examine the errors made during COVID-19 is glaring.Osterholm strongly believes there should be a federal, 9/11 Commission-style report that looks back at COVID-19. He and his coauthor, Mark Olshaker, wrote “The Big One” because there isn't one.“We wanted to make certain there was a record somewhere of what happened or didn't happen and what … could have made a difference,” he told Miller. One example: Osterholm contends widespread lockdowns were ineffective and crude.“The most important thing was having good medical care, and how are you going to get good medical care if your hospital is at 140 percent capacity? You can't.”Instead, he said, we should have used strategic “snow days” with the goal to keep hospital beds under 90 to 95 percent occupancy.“If we could do that, we could get good medical care that would make a difference” in saving lives, he said, without stalling the economy or forcing kids to do school at home.5. We are going backward on preparedness for the next pandemic. But as sobering as the past is, Osterholm was most dire about what comes next.“We are living in the most dangerous time that public health has experienced,” he told Miller. “[The current administration] has taken the public health system as we know it and gutted it in this country. [Look at] what's happened at the CDC this past week, with the firing of the new director who has been there a month, the loss of the senior people there, the fact that the one redeeming, hopeful lesson we learned during the pandemic is how important vaccines could be. And now we have stopped all research on the one vaccine that holds the best future for us with influenza pandemics and COVID pandemics. We live in a very anti-science world right now. And I never thought that I would see the day that the CDC, the NIH and the FDA are enemies of public health, as opposed to the protectors of it.”Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.

Mr. Feldman has a new animated series coming to Netflix called Long Story Short, and considering it's by the creator of the incredible series Bojack Horseman, it looks like it's a series not to be missed. I loved that show! We Discuss: The Superstore and Mad Men star reveals why Long Story Short may be his favorite role yet, and why he's so excited to talk about this show. Ben explains why COVID storylines were a hot topic in Hollywood. Ben's hilariously candid take on parenting two young kids. Why animation allows more creative freedom than live-action TV. What it's like to have this show renewed for Season 2 before it even airs. If God could prevent The Big One from hitting the Los Angeles area any time soon. Don't forget: God and Jesus stream daily. Catch God Pod LIVE every weekday at 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT. Thou shalt tune in and tell a friend! Remember to add the God Pod wherever you listen to podcasts, like Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

I received a letter from Brian Renfroe today, answering my question of whether it's permissible for me to be nominated for a branch officer position in our upcoming re-run election, AND to be nominated to serve as a steward. Turns out, yes. Yes it is. This ruling will strengthen involvement and democracy in my branch, which is a good thing.
Jamie James in conversation with David Eastaugh https://shop.bandwear.com/collections/oglio-records-shop/products/ogl048 James was initially known as the leader and founder of the rockabilly trio The Kingbees, active between 1978 and 1982. The group included drummer Rex Roberts and bassist Michael Rummans. The Kingbees recorded two albums with David J. Holman, producing on RSO. The first, titled The Kingbees, (released March 1980) featured the James-penned hit "My Mistake". The second album, titled The Big Rock, was released in March 1981 and also spawned national touring, a performance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and a cameo role in the movie The Idolmaker. Shortly thereafter the band split up. In 1983 James released a solo EP with Vanity Records titled The Big One. In the late 1980s, James hooked up with noted actor Harry Dean Stanton to form a unique musical ensemble which performed until the year 2000. In 2000 James went on to form the rock and roll band "DQ and The Sharks" featuring actor/musician Dennis Quaid. In 1993 James had also released a solo LP on Schoolkids Records titled Cruel World. In 2000 he released his latest solo LP on Oglio Records, titled Crossroads. Oglio also released a two-album CD issue of the Kingbees first and second LPs.

Hi friends, happy Wednesday! Do you guys remember earthquake drills? I grew up in California… So earthquake drills were just part of my life growing up. It seemed like we did earthquake drills nonstop. And despite that, I can never seem to remember what to do during an earthquake. Like, do I go to a doorway? Do I hide under a desk? Do I stop, drop, and roll? Oh right, that's for fires. Some earthquakes are so big they have literally changed the size and rotation of the earth. The whole thing terrifies me because I learned that sometimes, an earthquake is just the *beginning* of a disaster. Earthquakes can trigger *other* events - like tsunamis, fires, and even… human sacrifice. And once upon a time, an earthquake almost caused a nuclear disaster. So let's get into it. I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History. I sometimes talk about my Good Reads in the show. So here's the link if you want to check it out.
