Podcasting 2.0 August 14th 2026 Episode 267 - "Chocolove" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00 - THE SPOTIFY "SKIP AHEAD" BUTTON — THE BIG ONE What it is: Spotify is testing a button that appears on the playback screen the moment it thinks you'd want to skip — an intro, a sponsorship message, or an entire ad break. It is bigger than everything else on screen. One tap drops you at the end of the break, back in the show. Premium subscribers only, selected markets including US and UK, and only when the app is in the foreground. Who broke it: James Cridland at Pod News, 4 August 2026 — an exclusive. Spotify never announced it. Semafor and most of the trade press picked it up afterwards; Cridland noted on air this week that some of them ran it without credit. The number that makes it different from a skip button: Cridland's arithmetic — skipping a typical ad break by hand is nine presses of the 15-second button, plus a correction tap when you overshoot. Skip Ahead is one. "Some people have said, oh, but you've been able to skip for years and this is no different. But a button that only appears when it's stuff that Spotify thinks you should be skipping is a start." It skips other people's money: the button fires on third-party ads — Acast, Odyssey, the New York Times — and on ads inside Spotify's own shows. It even skipped Search Engine's read for its own paid tier, PJ Vogt pitching Incognito Mode. One half of Spotify sells advertisers reach; the other half hands listeners a button to leave. Spotify's answer, and the trapdoor in it: Spotify told Cridland it is "not affecting ad delivery." True only if delivery means to the device. Cridland: "If ad delivery is to the listener's ear, which is actually what people are paying for..." — the download still counts, the ad still gets billed, the human never hears it. Spotify's other defence: the button merely shows where other listeners already skip. Cridland: "I'm not entirely sold on that, but if that's what Spotify say, I mean they wouldn't lie."

Tom Arth is one of the multiple Steelers coaches to speak highly of Drew Allar throughout training camp so far. It sounds like Allar has taken a few steps since rookie minicamp when we saw video of him being completely torn down to start over his process. How much will we find out about Allar tomorrow night? Who could we compare Allar too? For a QB that failed time and time again in college, is this game bigger than one against Ohio State? The guys didn't think Allar was ever the best player on the field in college. Is tomorrow night a big one for Penn State fans? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike confirmed that he was in Canton last night ahead of the Hall of Fame Game. Did Chris Berman lose his ass? Mike explained why Baker Mayfield could be the Steelers QB in 2027 and why he could actually sign for less money than expected. If Mayfield does come here, how good could he be? Mike made waves by telling the Pardon My Take guys that the Steelers could trade Aaron Rodgers at this year's deadline if they get off to a rotten start – what was his reasoning? Mike thinks things between Mike McCarthy and his QB could become ‘very combustible very quickly' like they did at the end of their time together in Green Bay. Mike believes the Steelers, like every year since Ben Roethlisberger retired, need to look into all options next offseason at QB, assuming Rodgers is done after this one. Mike's guess it that Tua Tagovailoa will be the Falcons starting QB Week 1 in Pittsburgh, saying it's Tua's job to lose at this point.

For the convenience of the two landowners who're spearheading their respective projects, I've split the initiative into two fundraisers, one for each plot of land. The first fundraiser can be found here. Approximately $2500 from the first fundraiser was used to jumpstart the cultivation of this new plot of land. As of the publication of this campaign, the land has been cleared and plowed, and an irrigation system has been purchases and installed. [...]The plot of land to be cultivated by these funds is approximately 700 square meters, more than double the size of our original project, hence the higher starting goal of $10,000. Funds raised here will go towards seedlings, fertilizer, pesticides, wages for those who cultivate the land, and other relevant expenses. This plot of land receives more direct sunlight than the first plot. Therefore, the landowner has determined we will plant cucumbers and molokhia here, and possibly a heat-resistant strain of peppers. A small portion of the funds will be used to pay any taxes, duties, and fees associated with transferring the donations to Palestine. Depending on success, the goal and scope of the project may be expanded. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He did it! Somewhat out of nowhere, in Saudi Arabia, at a second-tier PLE, Sami Zayn won the world title. To celebrate, or at least check out the video evidence, we're watching along with Night of Champions 2026 and (hopefully) enjoying the triple threat between Zayn, Gunther, and now-former champ Cody Rhodes.

On his first day back in the White House, President Donald Trump issued an executive order that would have made the children of undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors non-citizens — rendering them effectively stateless. And while six Supreme Court justices struck down that executive order today, three sided with Trump. So what does this ruling mean — and what's next for the issue of birthright citizenship? To find out, we spoke to Cecillia Wang, National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union. She argued before the Supreme Court in favor of birthright citizenship. And in headlines, the Supreme Court issues major rulings on trans rights and campaign finance, Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. returns to D.C. after four months away, and White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought testifies before a House appropriations subcommittee on federal spending.Show Notes: Learn more about the ACLU – www.aclu.org Call Congress – 202-224-3121 Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/y4y2e9jy What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcast Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/ For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Zynga Founder Mark Pincus: Why All New Fails + How to Copy to Millions

The James Altucher Show

A Note from James:Mark Pincus is one of the true OGs of the internet. You probably know him as the founder of Zynga, the company behind FarmVille, Zynga Poker, and Words With Friends. Zynga was eventually acquired by Take-Two in a transaction valued at approximately $12.7 billion. Before Zynga, Mark started Tribe, one of the first social networks—before MySpace and Facebook. He has spent more than 25 years building, failing, and studying what gets millions of people to click, play, share, and come back. His new book, Life at the Speed of Play, inspired me to start coming up with new business ideas while we were still recording. What I really love is how Mark teaches people to copy like a master without looking like a copycat. He has a framework called “Proven–Better–New.” Start with something that has already been proven. Make it obviously better. Then isolate the new idea you want to test. It's one of the best systems I've heard for creating products people actually want.We talk about the early days of Facebook and MySpace, the failure of Tribe, the gaming industry, consumer psychology, AI coding, and how agents could eventually network and work for us while we're doing something else.I loved talking with Mark. I was still thinking about this conversation afterward—and I'm literally building businesses based on what I learned. His new book is called Life at the Speed of Play. Listen to this episode, and then read the book.Episode Description:Most founders begin with an idea and then spend months—or years—trying to prove that people want it. Mark Pincus thinks that process is backward. At Zynga, Mark's teams built “failure machines”: simple systems that allowed them to test hundreds of concepts before writing the code. They put unfinished ideas in front of real users, watched what people clicked, and refused to build anything until the demand was obvious. The objective wasn't to avoid failure. It was to make failure fast, cheap, and useful.Mark explains the framework behind that process: Proven–Better–New. First, study an existing success down to every screen, click, and design decision. Then identify one improvement that current users would immediately recognize as better. Only after that should a team add the unproven idea—the part most likely to fail.James and Mark also examine the problems facing today's consumer entrepreneurs. AI has made software easier to build, but distribution has become harder. People aren't searching for new apps, established platforms restrict organic growth, and algorithmic reach isn't the same as users actively sharing something with friends.Mark uses the failure of his early social network, Tribe, to explain why virality is not enough. Tribe grew quickly but lacked retention and trust. He ignored the communities users loved because they didn't match the business model he had already chosen. That painful mistake became the foundation for much of his later product philosophy. The conversation ends with Mark's current experiments: personal AI agents modeled after members of his family, a proposed work network built specifically for agents, an enterprise AI company called Hivemind, and the difficult decision to end a four-year passion project without abandoning the instinct behind it.This is a practical conversation about testing ideas, separating instinct from ego, learning from the past, and killing the wrong product before it consumes the right opportunity. What You'll Learn:How to build a failure machine: Test headlines, offers, videos, and fake doors before investing in a finished product. How to apply Proven–Better–New: Begin with a proven behavior, make one unmistakable improvement, and isolate the risky innovation. Why distribution is now harder than development: AI can generate a prototype quickly, but it cannot guarantee attention, trust, or adoption. Why Tribe failed despite rapid growth: Virality without retention, safety, and alignment with user behavior does not create a lasting network. How to copy without becoming a copycat: Study successful products at the pixel level, preserve what works, and innovate only where it matters. When to abandon an idea: Preserve the underlying instinct, but stop funding the particular expression of it when the evidence turns against you.How AI agents may change networking: Agents could eventually search for opportunities, exchange work, build reputations, and bring useful leads back to their users.Timestamped Chapters: [02:00] Finding the “OMFG” Moment [02:58] A Note from James [05:00] Build a Failure Machine Before Building a Product [06:25] Testing Demand With Fake Doors and Broken Links [08:08] Writing Copy That People Actually Notice [10:52] Test More Ideas in a Week Than the Industry Tests in a Year [11:53] Why Neglected Products Become Innovation Labs [13:26] How Mobile Apps Slowed Product Experimentation [15:09] Can AI Bring Rapid Testing Back? The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 4 (6.24) In the 9PM, Timmy drops some straight-shooting earthquake prep advice — stock up on water, non-perishables, and a solid go bag, but don’t forget the essentials: cigarettes, booze, weed. Because if the Big One hits and you’re stuck in the dark for days, you’re gonna want something to take the edge off. Big win for the home team — The Conway Show is sitting strong at No. 2 in the city! Mike Perez from All Medical Supplies in Ontario joins the show to blow the lid off the massive hospice care fraud happening across California and the rest of the country, which he says has been running for decades and could total hundreds of millions. He also believes DEI policies helped keep it buried for so long. Timmy stays cool as a cucumber during quakes — just like he taught his daughter Miss Mini Conway — but the devastation in Venezuela is no joke, with Caracas airport shut down, phone lines dead, and roads cracked wide open. Classic Conway mix of practical advice, fraud exposés, and real talk.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
