University of Oregon study finds link between widely used herbicide and infant health

Glyphosate is an herbicide that’s widely used in agriculture in the U.S. and around the world. It’s the active ingredient in Roundup, which is commonly applied to crops like soy, cotton and corn that have been genetically modified to withstand the weed killer. The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that glyphosate is “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans,” although a ruling in 2022 by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has prompted the agency to review the chemical’s risks to human health and the environment.  A new study by economists at the University of Oregon examined how glyphosate may also be impacting the health of infants. It looked at millions of birth records from 1990 to 2013 to see if there were differences in birth weight and gestational length after Roundup use intensified in rural counties that grew genetically modified corn, soy and cotton compared to rural counties that weren’t suitable for growing those GM crops. It found that exposure to glyphosate was associated with lower birth weights and shorter gestations, with those effects being greater for some babies more than others. Joining us to talk about the findings is Ed Rubin, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Oregon.

A team of researchers at the University of Oregon is currently studying the relationships between soccer cleat composition and risk of injury in female versus male athletes. Female soccer players are three times more likely to suffer from major knee injuries than male soccer players, and a recent English study found that ACL injuries are 2-6 times more likely in females than males. This group of students and faculty at UO have been running tests for the past five years testing cleat stud length, traction and stability. They have created a model for a new type of cleat designed specifically for the female foot anatomy, which is in the beginning stages of development. About 75 years ago, Jackson Pollock revolutionized the art world with his distinctive style of painting. He would lay the canvas on the floor and with his arms outstretched, pour or drip cans of paint directly onto its surface. The technique invited admirers and detractors alike, along with scandals involving forged canvases turning up decades after his death.  Richard Taylor, a professor of physics, psychology, and art at University of Oregon has been using computers for more than 25 years to analyze Pollock’s paintings and help authenticate canvases of uncertain origin. He recently collaborated with two former UO doctoral students to develop a tool using AI to distinguish between genuine and imitation Pollock paintings with 99% accuracy. Taylor joins us to talk about the recently published results, and the role AI may increasingly play in the art world.

Public health agencies are playing an increasingly important role in alerting residents to the risks of wildfire smoke as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires in the West. But that messaging can lack important information about the severity of that risk and specific actions that can be taken to mitigate it, according to a new study from the University of Oregon.  The study examined nearly 1,300 messages about wildfire smoke exposure that were sent in 2022 by federal, state and county health agencies in Oregon and Washington using the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. While slightly more than half the tweets were sent during September and October when wildfire smoke peaked, less than a fifth of them contained useful air quality descriptions or steps residents could take to mitigate exposure to it, such as using an air purifier at home or wearing a mask outdoors to filter out ash and smoke particles.  Joining us to discuss the findings, and the opportunities they reveal to better communicate wildfire smoke health risks  is Cathy Slavik, the lead author of the study and a research associate at the Center for Science Communication Research at the University of Oregon.

She has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University Of Oregon and a master's degree in forensic science from George Washington University. At the BAU, Julia was the lead profiler in the Golden State Killer case and has had other assignments in the FBI including investigating white-collar crime, public corruption and civil rights matters.Today, we're going to look at Israel Keyes through the lens of an actual FBI profiler. This episode was inspired by 3 amazing episodes that Julia and her colleagues did on Israel Keyes where I learned a lot of things that frighten people about Keyes really just had to do with mundane elements of what his interests are and we'll also discuss what we should really be worried about.Listen to part one and part two of the other episodes we had Julia on and check out her podcast, The Consult.Learn more by visiting our website and follow along with us on Instagram.

You've probably seen this name a lot because she's a legend in the state of Oregon and amateur golf world. Krissy grew up in Canby, Oregon where she played most of her junior golf and went onto play at both Oregon State University and Portland University. As her years playing college golf were coming to an end, she made the decision to not pursue golf and get things going in life. Research shows that up to 50% of the human brain is involved in visual processing. For octopuses, that number is roughly 70%. There are similarities between octopus and human eyes – both involve a lens and a pupil that allows light into the back of the eye – but the way our brains process vision is completely different. University of Oregon biology professor Cris Niell has been studying these processes in his lab. The team recently published a paper in Current Biology on the ways octopuses organize visual information in their brains. He joins us to offer some insight into how octopuses see.

Mark Twain once said, “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” Today's guest knows a little something about whiskey. Alex Chasko is the Master Distiller and Blender and was employee number one at Teeling Whiskey, which was built in 2012 and was the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years. However, Alex didn't start there. His passion for brewing can be seen as early as sophomore year when he started making beer with at-home brew kits and spent his summers at Bridgeport Brewing Company. Through working at Bridgeport, Alex learned how biology and chemistry were applied to the elements of brewing. After graduating from the University of Oregon, Alex worked at Pyramid Brewing Company in Seattle until he realized he wanted to get into whiskey and distilling. When it comes to whiskey, Edinburgh, Scotland, is the only place to go. So, Alex saved up his pennies, sold his truck, and enrolled in Heriot-Watt University in their Masters of Brewing and Distilling program, where he felt like he belonged. After a brief stint in Singapore to open a brew pub and rediscover where he was born, Alex moved back to Ireland in 2008 to bring new ideas to whiskey. For 20 years, Teeling had struggled to compete against large distilleries such as Jameson but thanks to Alex's dedication to bringing new and innovative flavors to whiskey, Teeling is now the World's Most Awarded Irish Whiskey. Teeling continues to raise the bar and boasts over 200 International Whiskey Awards. This fact becomes both more interesting and more logical when you learn that UO has a very special relationship with a little company known as NIKE. Some states have placed limits on topics that can be taught in schools. Some have tried to ban the practice of tenure, which gives professors job security. Some universities have bowed to pressure from students or outside influences to censure or fire teachers. These attacks on academic freedom may not be new, but they feel particularly acute right now. This week, the University of Oregon is hosting a conference on the present and future of academic freedom. Michael Dreiling, professor of sociology at the University of Oregon, and Lori Latrice Martin, professor in the Department of African and African American Studies at Louisiana State University, are both speaking at the conference. They join us to explain what's at stake.
