In-studio sessions with Miami bred talent.
The journey of Richie Hell is a trip, to say the least. Argentinian-born, but Miami-adopted Richie describes himself as a musical citizen of the world, limiting himself to nothing when it comes to the sounds he produces and spins. In his native country, Argentina, he's widely known as a DJ, musician, radio host, and producer. He began winning over US audiences in 2015 when he moved to Miami to serve as Music Director for the renowned Faena Hotel. A lifelong record collector, Richie's original compositions throb with a steady universal beat, evoking everything from South American psychedelic obscurities to Madchester and P-Funk. At his eclectic live shows, one can expect driving percussion and bass, very special guest vocalists, and the occasional 12-foot-tall inflatable cobra created by his incredibly talented partner Francisca Oyhanarte, who is responsible for the artwork accompanying his releases. In this episode of Based, we discuss Richie Hell's origin story, moving to Miami and shedding his skin over time as an ever-evolving artist, leading up to his latest project, The Gumbo Limbo Experiment. We speak about the process of creating his latest project, how Miami has played a role in his creative process (and why he never wants to leave), and what we can expect from him in the future. Mustard Service describes their sound as “zesty” and if you're not sure what that could mean, let em break it down for you.. elements of their stylized “zest” music draws from funk, beach, and jazz sounds. We “sat down” with a favorite Miami boy band to talk everything from their newest pandemic release, “C'est La Vie” to their minimal social media usage during this day and age where shameless self promo is king. Mustard Service thanks the “Algorithm Gods” for their current success with over 3 million streams, and they've made it seem so effortless. Whether it's their absurdly humorous personalities and charm or their excessive talent paired with (at times) raunchy lyrics over beachy tunes, Mustard Service is here to stay. Catch Marco, Nuchi, Leo, Tuto, and Adam on Based's 23rd episode to learn more about how they became a vital part of Miami's sound, just from being entirely themselves.. Or Zesty..
For episode 22, we shared some time with the highly decorated and always busy, The Remyz. The Remyz bring a fusion of funk, R&B, and pop to their project, and are constantly evolving within their own sounds. Born from the city's cultural arts and jazz programs, the boys went from skipping band class to starting a band – performing 156 shows in 2019 alone!. In this episode, we talk about the beginning of the Remyz, their most recent work “Zone”, their countless battle of the band wins, their Paper Water cosign and what that holds for their future.
The boys of INVT hopped on Based with an idea of throwing a listening party for the premier their newest project, MUNDOS, on Dublab. Not only is this a musical endeavor, but purchasing the album leads to owning a book providing a tangible experience of the soundscape and culture of Miami meant to be paired with listening to the record. https://invt.bandcamp.com/merch/mundos-book-album INVT stands for innovate, which is what Luca and Delbert specialize in when planning a rollout. They mention that they want fans to be able to cut out pages of their MUNDOS book, hang them up on the wall, and directly be able to interact with the people listening to their music - similar to the 90's. Being notable tastemakers in Miami, INVT talks about recreating the club scene during the quarantine in the comfort of their own home (and those of their listeners), the concept of authenticity in artwork and the role it plays in the community here in Miami, and how their worldly endeavors translate through their work. The boys share an attitude of "we do what we want" and refuse to play by the rules—a philosophy that has yet to prove them wrong.
Based Miami's second show on Dublab features a glimpse into the mind of Suzi Analogue: singer, songwriter, beatmaker, and creator of Never Normal Records. First show on our new station: dublab! We are excited since this opens so many doors and will help put Miami artists on the national map. There is no better representation of the Miami music scene than Paperwater. Eddy and Daygee of Paperwater hop on the airwaves to discuss how they plan on expanding their mark on Miami's music and cultural scene, what they've been up to during the big Q, and an hour-long emotionally charged mix. Not only do they mix and completely produce their own recordings, but they have thrown parties for several years and created a collective that represents some of Miami's most interesting, left of center artists. Their long-term goal is to keep creating in Miami in a way where the world can Wikipedia their collective and see loads of familiar names and recording styles. To Eddy and Daygee, music does not belong in a box, neatly labeled and filed away under the appropriate Beatport genre tab. To Paperwater, music is universal and constantly evolving. Like them, it should be allowed to test limits and change perspectives. We had an amazing time talking to Eddy & Daygee and have only heard the most amazing things about them, their label Wet Paper Recs, and their agency Half-Full. They are kind and share a similar mission statement as us. Feel free to follow them on Instagram @paperwater and us @based.miami. Thank you for all the support!
18th episode of Based?! Unreal. Today is a special episode accompanying our merch drop where 100% of the proceeds will go to NAACP + The National Bail Fund. Check out our instagram @based90.5 for more info. ★ This episode is with Miami's special gem, @Coffintexts! Alex is aproducer / Dj who has been actively working under the name Coffintexts, involved in several unique styles of music. Prior to quarantine, she was consistently playing eclectic events in the area, and preparing for a now postponed show with iiipoints. She is currently working on an electronic project that is going to be released this summer, in addition to some exciting collaborations! We spoke to her about every corner + niche of Miami she's played and how important it is to use your platform during this time. She grew up in Miami to a healthy mix of metal, hip-hop and Peruvian ballads. She was able to connect with other tastemakers in Miami and talks to us about her mentors and label-mates Paperwater on WetPaper Records. We love this quote where "COFFIN was found hiding out at a local Sam Ash store, practicing on cdj's years before this technically talented dj first distilled her secret brew." She is extremely creative and it shows in the mix she provided for us today. Please enjoy and imagine yourself at your favorite underground rave. Morgan Bryson (@morganfbryson) is an absolute gem, and having her on Based was written in the stars. ★ The Based girls were looking for a strong female vocalist with a message & Morgan was the perfect fit. Although we were focusing on Morgan's music: her newest single Smoke Smoke & her latest EP Hot Pursuit, we learn that she is a multi-faceted artist with experience in different mediums and a degree in Studio Art. In addition, she has gone to work for Half Full Agency, a creative multi-media and events company as a coordinator, artist, and liaison. Her focus remains on creating unique brand/artist experiences and guest hospitality. Morgan has a strong support group in Miami as she tells us she is hyped by the feeling of victory with her friends in the mood of New Kids on the Block. She explains her history with Miami's finest production duo, Paper Water, since they have been heavily involved with Morgan's catalog. Morgan also gives us a taste of her brainstorming process for rollouts + how she continues to plan releases by staying ahead of the curve. She has dedicated this time during quarantine to hone in on her skills as a recording artist and try new things to progress her artistry. We can expect some sick new music with collaborations from notable names in Miami as well as a tour once the world reopens. Morgan Bryson x Based was so much special and it was great to give her a platform to provide context to these tracks. If you like what you heard, follow us on Instagram @based90.5! As we transition into full podcast mode, we welcome quite literally one of Florida's best bands.. @cannibalkids! No one is as raw, yet consistent as them; they seem to get it right effortlessly.. every single time. Damian Gutierrez (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar) and Dustin Diaz (Lead Guitar) met in Middle School and started making music together. Damian later met Luke Faulkingham (Drums) and brought him into the band. The three of them virtually "sit down" with the Based girls to talk about everything from their adventures into becoming Cannibal Kids, 2016 early jams, touring all of the east coast, and most importantly their full-length offering deadheads. A follow-up to their 2017 debut, Bloom, deadheads is a brand new sound that showcases the band's diversity and growth. "Deadheads" literally meaning to remove dead flower heads from (a plant) to encourage further blooming. This project has solidified a healthy fanbase not only in South Florida, but worldwide! As the rollout of this project hit right before the pandemic, the trio discusses how they had to make a slight shift to still encourage full coverage with digital activations to replace the same love they would have received from the tour that was planned. They are even doing an in-house tour on their Youtube to perform and promote these songs. Cannibal Kids x Based was so much fun & lots of energy, but most importantly, we learned so much about their process. If you like what you heard, follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances. We are currently looking for a new station to broadcast our show on, let us know if you have any ideas!
The last episode with WVUM is a special one. Today we are chatting with two people behind Miami's best Tuesday party: The Love Below at Las Rosas. The Love Below was created for music lovers, the open minded, and those looking for a break from the typical Miami club scene. The essence of the party is rooted in the DJs, who pride themselves in their un-matched musical selection, and ability to induce an energetic dance floor. That is exactly what Pazmal and Berrakka did with the exclusive mix they provided for their Based appearance. Genre influences for TLB include Future Beats, House, Funk, Soul, Disco, Jersey Club, Latin and more. For the last 5 years, The Love Below has helped shape the Miami music landscape through exposure to new sounds. The team plans to remain a staple in the city's night-life and music community, while growing on a national scale. The name comes from Miami being so low on the map, but the love it possesses. We are lucky to have such an influential part of Miami's sound apart of the Based family. In this episode, Jordie + Cate interview Pazmal + Berrakka about their backgrounds individually and their path to forming this collective. They also touch on what's coming with livestreams and other ways to expand the brand. If you like what you heard, follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances. We are currently looking for a new station to broadcast our show on, let us know if you have any ideas!
Can't believe we've made it to episode 14 already! This guest is really special for us, someone who has been recommended from the beginning of the Based days. Introducing Lando & The Infinite Sadness, a musical project by Josue Vargas to fuse his affinity for jazz/hip-hop/emo/neo soul. Lando released Dark Matter early this year, and has gained overwhelming support ever since. Believe it or not, Lando is essentially a one man band. He is able to lay down the drums, bass, guitar, and keys on every record and then hands it over to a trusted friend to polish with sax. Vargas produced the bulk of Dark Matter with little more than a laptop, a MIDI keyboard, and a bass guitar. As a huge fan of jazz and accompanying genres, he is able to morph his sound to reflect his influences, while keeping fresh and pushing the creative envelope. In this episode, Lando highlights some of the records on this project, talks to us about his creative process in and out of COVID, and debuts some exclusive unreleased special tracks. He also talks about working with other musicians in Miami and multiple musical projects with different sounds. Lando was such a pleasure to have as a guest, Jordie + Cate are so grateful for opportunities like these! If you like what you heard, follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances.
It's a good day when you get to talk to the @palomino_blond squad! Carli, Kyle, Jake & Raven hop on the Based airwaves to discuss their latest split EP with Las Nubes as well as becoming active players in the South Florida DIY scene. After filling countless rooms with earlier projects, the members came together over a shared love of rock/live music, and released demos during the Summer of 2018. The demo has seen relentless support from their homegrown fanbase and regional college radio stations alike. The band then spent time coining their sound, that could even be described as "shred-gaze" to add a little bit of edge to that classic shoe gaze foundation. The first song we get to hear is called, Seventh Heaven. Which can be described as a "moody crusher that has themes of personal connection, fever dreams, and ghosts. I wanted it to sound like you were in a big dark house while it's storming outside, and you were convinced it's haunted by someone you really don't want it to be haunted by.” Palomino Blond also describes their sound as "sometimes evil, sometimes pretty" to perfectly capture the way the band operates and the way they are continuing to push out content mid-quarantine. Please listen to this episode of Based to find your new favorite band as Jordie + Cate ask meaningful questions about the city of Miami, making a lasting impression, and future endeavors to keep the spark alive. If you like what you heard, follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances.
Having @whoisbeam on Based was absolute honor. Not only does he have his own unique star power, but he has been collaborating with a myriad of notable acts since he was a teen. Jamaica-born and Miami-raised, BEAM found solace in music naturally. As the son of Reggae and Dancehall legend Papa San, he has big shoes to fill. And that's exactly what his moniker "Be Everything And More" stands for. He calls his first time recording his own songs “undeniable,” saying, “The gratification I felt tells me that this is something I want to do forever.” Although BEAM has been around music for over 15 years, his breakout project 95 was his first full-length effort. On 95, BEAM jumps from genre to genre so much that a first-time listener would never be able to guess it's the same artist on each song. Title track "95" could be mistaken for unreleased Cypress Hill from the '90s, "Mad Gaal" sounds like a crossover dancehall hit in the making, and "Unda Armor" is a booming, slightly off-kilter rap track. Please listen to Jordie + Cate interview BEAM to learn more about each song on the project as well as future plans and quarantine activities. BEAM highlights some of his favorite tracks and gives light to some of the stories and meanings of each. We are so excited to watch BEAM become a household name and continue to rep South Florida. As always, please listen to our sixth podcast rendition of Based and follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances. Songs in this episode in order: Drop the Roof by BEAM 2x2 by BEAM Mad Gaal by BEAM Unda Armor by BEAM 95 by BEAM Soldier by BEAM Slip by Ambré ft. BEAM Lost by BEAM Stranded by BEAM ft. Childish Major I Might Just by BEAM Numb by BEAM ft. Morgan Saint
OUR FAV MULTI-TALENTED BEAR @urfavvbear will be joining us on the air! Bear is a singer, songwriter, producer, and man of many instrumental talents ranging in indie pop and electronic. Bear is an alum of Red Bull Music Academy as well as a current A&R for Space Tapes here in Miami. He has played III Points as well as some of the best venues in the city. In this episode, We'll be chatting about his most recent release, “Hold Me Down,” sharing some of his other projects, and finding out what's to come from him in the nearest future. Other tracks included are "Blue House Black Mold", "A Wall", "I'm Not Here", "Leave it Alone", "Limited Only", "I'm Not Sad", "Really Here", "What's Wrong", and "Young Man". Bear also shares some insight to some of the influences behind his sound and getting more involved in the Miami music scene. Delighted to introduce @_donzii as our 10th guest on Based! Double digits!! Donzii is a performance art, no wave/post punk/funk vibe from Miami via NYC. The music has a penchant for drum machines/bass accompanied with mythical utopian guitars. Their live shows are kept exciting by employing a revolving use of performance art scores developed by lead singer Jenna Balfe, based on her art practice. Donzii is: Jenna Balfe on vocals, Dennis Fuller on bass and drum machines, Miles Fortune Hancock on keys, Monroe Getz on drums and Danny Heinze on guitar. In this interview, we'll be talking about their newest single “Burn” and perhaps they might share a few more very exclusive tracks to help us to get thru our quarantine in one piece. If you've been around the music scene here in SoFlo, chances are, you've seen Donzii at your favorite venues and festivals. Donzii is known for their performance art narrative and skilled musicianship, and don't align to any one sound or genre. Call ‘em post punk, goth, or no wave—they're not here to conform. As always, please listen to our fourth podcast rendition of Based and follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances.
What a fun episode with legendary @silentaddy! Although actions speak louder than words, much can be said about Silent Addy – the DJ, producer and creative visionary revitalizing Miami's dancehall scene. We are very excited to have Christopher Hurst (@432hurst), born and raised in South Florida, as our eighth guest on Based. Originally from Broward, Chris' journey with music began with picking up a guitar at 9 years old. Later on when he got a laptop, he started making his own tunes in GarageBand, mimicking some of his heroes such as Daft Punk. Chris met some people tied to the local rap scene and got great experience producing for local favorites like Mike Dece of Metro Zu or Amber London of Raider Clan. Chris then realized what really makes him happy is making original music that is a combination of all interests ranging from funk, punk, electro, house, rock, or hip-hop. This culminated in November 2019 to release his first official project “Finally”. In this episode, Jordie + Cate interview Chris about his background in music & upcoming projects. Chris also brings light on the impact he wants to leave on himself and the Miami community. The interview is immediately followed by an original mix and live set with new music he is exclusively debuting on Based, some cuts from his project "Finally", and more live production. Please listen to our second podcast version of Based and follow us on Instagram @based90.5! Thanks for your support + DM us for appearances.
