California's next big earthquake could be a real game-changer, especially for the western part of the state. Scientists are keeping a close eye on the San Andreas Fault, which has the potential for a massive megathrust quake. If it hits, the shaking could be strong enough to cause land to sink along the coast, leading to flooding and major damage. This would be a big deal for cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, which are already dealing with rising sea levels. Experts are urging people to prepare by having emergency kits and plans in place. It's a reminder that living in earthquake country means staying ready for the unexpected! Kate Wolf and Eric Newman are joined by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, novelist, and translator Forrest Gander to discuss his new book, Mojave Ghost. A long poem situated along the 800-mile length of the San Andreas Fault, which runs from Northern California where Gander lives to his birthplace in the Southern California Desert, the work reflects both exterior and interior landscapes with tender precision and heightened awareness. Gander moves through memory, grief, and fault lines— in the earth, our country, and himself. He confronts what it means to be a self that contains divisions born out of time, experience, and relationships to other people, both living and gone. Also, Simon Critchley, author of Mysticism, returns to recommend A Most Remarkable Creature by Jonathan Meiburg, and give a tip of the hat to Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning California poet Forrest Gander discusses "Mojave Ghost," his novel-poem blending personal grief with geological exploration. He explains how his background in geology shapes his writing, offering unique insights on landscape and emotion. Gander describes walking the San Andreas Fault to process loss, highlighting the desert's transformative power. He explores the connection between landscape and psyche, challenging conventional views of time and grief. Gander emphasizes the importance of presence in writing and life, reflecting on poetry's role in our media-saturated world.

Hello Interactors,It's been awhile. I've been off getting our kids settled at college…including a transfer to Los Angeles. And I may have also been seduced by the lazy days of summer. After dropping our son in LA, my wife and I took some time to return to Santa Barbara where we first met. I was reminded of how uniquely beautiful that place is. It's also host to a unique collection of physical geography. And while it mostly enjoys a cool, calm environment, it can also endure bouts of destruction and renewal. A bit like all of us.Let's reflect, shall we…MIGRATIONS, MOUNTAINS, AND MEMORIESTraversing the globe dropping offspring is as old as humanity. As far as we know, early hominins like Homo erectus first stepped out of Africa two million years ago. The oldest human skeletal remains outside of Africa to date were found in Eurasia (now the country of Georgia) and are 1.8 million years old. These waves of migrations were likely driven by changes in climate, resources, societies, and technologies — the same factors driving migration today. Our oldest kin dispersed widely across Eurasia, reaching as far as Southeast Asia. Some may have even used primitive boats to navigate to and between islands. This all set the stage for later migrations of other hominins, including Homo sapiens, as they spread across globe over the next million years.I was reflecting on this on a hike my wife and I recently took in the foothills of Santa Barbara (where we had our first date 34 years ago!). The Santa Ynez Mountains were uplifted during the late Miocene (23.03 million years ago) to early Pliocene (2.58 million years ago) due to the tectonic interactions between the Pacific and North American plates. This exposed a complex layering of ancient marine and terrestrial sediments that were deposited over millions of years in a marine basin stretching from current day central valley of California to Northern Mexico. These sandstones, shale, and conglomerates are revealed along the trails, cliffs, ridges, and valleys we traversed, all formed by folding, faulting, and fanning of eroded debris. The mountains continue to be pushed upward at a rate of 1 to 4 millimeters per year due to the ongoing compression between the tectonic plates along the dynamic San Andreas Fault — the same fault that originally formed them millions of years ago.The Miocene epoch, with its warmer and more humid climate, supported dense forests of subtropical and temperate species in the Santa Ynez Mountains. As tectonic activity uplifted the region, new habitats emerged, setting the stage for diverse vegetation to develop. This period laid the groundwork for the ecosystems that would later evolve as the landscape continued to change.By the Pliocene, global cooling led to drier conditions, favoring the transition from these lush forests to the more arid-adapted plant communities found today. The chaparral, oak woodlands, and coastal sage scrub we hiked through are products of this shift. These plants adapted to the region's famous Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, and further shaped by the ongoing geological forces at work in the area. The resultant Santa Ynez Mountains significantly influence the weather patterns in Santa Barbara by acting as a barrier to the Pacific Ocean's marine air. Unlike much of the California coast, the Santa Barbara area faces south. During the summer, these south facing mountains trap the marine layer — a cool, moist air mass that forms over the ocean—leading to fog and low clouds along the coast. This marine layer helps keep temperatures in Santa Barbara cooler than in areas further inland, providing a mild and comfortable summer climate. Additionally, in winter, the mountains enhance orographic lift, causing moist air blown from the south to rise, cool, and condense, resulting in increased rainfall on the windward side of the range and benefiting the coastal regions. I recall one brisk winter morning in Santa Barbara in 1990 when frost appeared in the shadows on the roads and snow dusted the peaks of the Santa Ynez mountains. However, these mountains also create a rain shadow effect on their leeward side, where descending air becomes warmer and drier, leading to less precipitation. This topographical influence also contributes to the occurrence of sundowner winds—warm, dry winds that descend from the mountains into Santa Barbara. These winds can cause rapid temperature increases and lower humidity levels, sometimes creating critical fire weather conditions. My wife, then girlfriend, and I ran a 5k in 1991 that was overcome with smoke from fire stoked by these sundowner winds.BLAZE, BURST, AND BLOOMSimilar winds, Santa Ana winds, stoked a more and recent severe fire, the Thomas Fire, in 2017. These winds form east of the Sierra Nevada mountains over inland deserts and west towards the coast. Hot and dry winds channel through mountain passes and canyons, gaining speed as they descend across Southern California — and they can amplify even the smallest fire. The Thomas Fire was one of the largest wildfires in California history burning over 280,000 acres of wildlife and more than 1,000 buildings. Firefighters in Montecito, the northern-most destination, battled for days to save homes and lives. This left big chunks of the Montecito foothills charred. As crews worked to clear debris over the next month, the area was hit with a torrent of rain. While rainfall in Montecito was relatively minimal on the morning of January 9th, 2018, rainfall further up the mountain, enhanced by the mountain's orographic lift, was more severe. Residents were caught off guard as waves of water gained speed through canyons and creeks picking up charred debris and uprooting trees loosened by saturated soil. These post-fire debris flows, which included mud, rocks, and tree branches, reached heights of up to 15 feet speeding an estimated 20 miles per hour. The disaster resulted in 21 fatalities, two missing persons, and about 163 people hospitalized. Property damage exceeding $177 million, emergency response hit at least $7 million, and another $43 million was slated for cleanup and restoration.Six years later, hiking in these same hills, we saw evidence of county crews still restoring and re-shoring the foothills. We also saw evidence of plants re-emerging. Some of which are descendants of the same ancient plants that emerged in the Pliocene in the very same soil we were walking on. Hiking, and sometimes running, through the recovering foothills of Montecito, I was struck by how much this landscape mirrors a story of resilience that extends far beyond these hills and long before our time there. Over the previous two weeks my wife and I had crisscrossed the USA, east to NYC and west to LA, dropping our kids far away — modern migration with echoes of long ago, still alive still today. Like other humans that moved across vast distances, we and our kids are adapting to new environments and new stages in life. Just like the chaparral and black sage of these foothills. The plants that now re-emerge from the scorched and scarred earth are descendants of those that first appeared in the Pliocene. They use fire to propagate and regenerate in challenging terrain. Chaparral species, like black sage, evolved to thrive in this fire-prone environment. Fire-stimulated germination allows seeds to lye dormant until they're exposed to heat which triggers germination. Sprouts emerge from underground lignotubers, which are complex energy-storing structures that quickly regenerate new shoots — even amidst scorched soil. Serotiny, another adaptation, turns seed cones into popcorn like capsules that only open when exposed to fire's heat giving them a head start on invasive competition. These strategies enable chaparral plants to not only survive but to capitalize on the aftermath of wildfires and hillside scraping floods. In the charred and healing soil beneath our feet, I saw the enduring connection between past and present, nature and nurture — a reminder that our journeys, like those of the landscapes we inhabit, are shaped by the unyielding push and pull of time — of adaptation, and resilience. Just as the chaparral plants of the Santa Barbara foothills have evolved mechanisms to thrive after fire, our kids, too, will develop new strategies to adapt and flourish in their new environments. In the face of life's inevitable challenges, they will learn to not only survive but to rise stronger, just as the ancient mountains of Santa Barbara continue to do. All the while, the landscapes beneath our feet continue their unbroken cycle of destruction, renewal, and growth amidst ever evolving climates, resources, societies, and technologies. Theresa Sawi, U.S. Geological Survey Repeating earthquakes sequences are widespread along California’s San Andreas fault (SAF) system and are vital for studying earthquake source processes, fault properties, and improving seismic hazard models. In this talk, I’ll be discussing an unsupervised machine learning‐based method for detecting repeating earthquake sequences (RES) to expand existing RES catalogs or to perform initial, exploratory searches. This method reduces spectrograms of earthquake waveforms into low-dimensionality “fingerprints” that can then be clustered into similar groups independent of initial earthquake locations, allowing for a global search of similar earthquakes whose locations can afterwards be precisely determined via double-difference relocation. We apply this method to ∼4000 small (Ml 0–3.5) located on a 10-km-long creeping segment of SAF and double the number of detected RES, allowing for greater spatial coverage of slip‐rate estimations at seismogenic depths. This method is complimentary to existing cross‐correlation‐based methods, leading to more complete RES catalogs and a better understanding of slip rates at depth.

Warning: Massive Earthquakes Begin (audio) David Eells – 2/18/24 This is the third time recently Debbie received this warning in our morning prayer meeting by faith at random. - Eze 33:1-6 ASV And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman; 3 if, when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; 4 then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. 6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned, and the sword come, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. (We have been giving the warnings about the great earthquakes at the time of the coming Man-child reformers and a truly world war just afterwards, for some time. Please listen.) Kathleen - just received by faith at random - Isa 13:6-9 ASV Wail ye; for the day of Jehovah is at hand; as destruction from the Almighty shall it come. 7 Therefore shall all hands be feeble, and every heart of man shall melt: ... 9 Behold, the day of Jehovah cometh, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy the sinners thereof out of it. The Three Days of Darkness and The Coming Great Changes MCKANA 2/9/24 Isaiah 26:20-21(KJV) 20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. Isaiah 26:4, 9 (KJV) 4Trust ye in the Lord forever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength: 9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. Judgment of the Lord comes to punish the sinners and to bring righteousness. There is no better way of sending a message; better than repeating them and putting them in the mouths of many to establish the truth. The Three Days of Darkness is closing in and all have to deliver what they know and what they have received from the Lord. (When PlanetX/Nibiru passes between the Sun and Earth its extreme gravity pull the south pole directly towards it causing the whole northern hemisphere to point out into dark space. Only the earth tipping on its side would cause the sun to go down at noon. Amos 8: 9 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Act 2:19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above, And signs on the earth beneath; Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the day of the Lord come, That great and notable day. 21 And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This short message is A WARNING THAT THE THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS IS NEAR, VERY NEAR. All have a responsibility to warn the people. Few words:- I. The Global Shaking. We have delivered repeated messages about the coming great Global Shaking. The dreadful Meteor, the Rogue Planet (Planet X/Nibiru) separately or together will bring the shaking. The Atlantic Meteor is the primary messenger of destructions where everything hinges on. (As we will see this meteor will break into 3 pieces as it enters the atmosphere with each piece glowing as a comet.) True to this, the Lord gave us his word saying “We will start in Puerto Rico !!!” and “We will do as we told you!!!” This was told to Efrian Rodriguez and many others. https://ubm1.org/?page=caribbean https://ubm1.org/?page=comingasteroid This will settle our concern. We have heard more than enough about the incoming Meteor and we are not going to duel on it any more. The shaking brings untold high number of deaths, destructions and great transformation of the land, globally. What more follows the shaking from the Meteor? II. The three Days of Darkness- is very close. In the last message posted here, it was not a simple impulse from myself which prompted me to write about the three days of darkness. This was from the Lord. The reason to give that message was from the urgency of the nearness of the coming three days of darkness. I am writing this with a clear understanding of the very nearness of the event. This short message is to warn and prepare all who are listening that we are very close to the three days of darkness which comes with the great Global shaking. Here is one very important and timely message from the Lord given to our sister Janet. It is very important to listen to the whole content of the message given to her. Few words from:- “Night draws nigh, Warn the people! Night draws nigh, Warn the people! Night draws nigh, Warn the people! Warn for there shall be signs in the earth and in the moon and in the Stars. Night when no man can work. In a moment, a twinkle, it will go from being one way to a completely different way. I, your creator Yaha warn out of love. Three Days of Darkness, Three Days of Terror. Then it begins great change. WOE WOE WOE, Great WOE upon WOES. This is true. Ask Me if it is true, Yahweh has spoken!” Return to Me – a message from your Creator YHWH III. The Great Change which follows. The great global destructions and death from the shaking and three days of darkness will open the door for greater judgment from the Lord. The prophesies we are given through the times will come to pass one by one step by step. (Earthquakes across U.S. and around the world), Economic collapse, civil war, war and invasion, the judgment passed on “Babylon” and the rest of the world will come to pass in the time prescribed for each of the events. Remember the word of the Lod gave us saying “I will do what I said I will do”. The word of the Lord says “Time itself is facilitated” and time is moving fast to its end. This is the End of Times. Conclusion. Many of us know what to do. It is time to Prepare, Prepare, Prepare, Repent, Repent, Repent. People have to be ready what to do when the inevitable shaking comes. People have to know what to do before and when the darkness comes. People have to be ready when calamities strike in greater scale. The shelter in all this is the Lord. All these events are heralding for the true that our redemption is near and there is a final work to be done before that- Harvest of souls. (In the coming Tribulation) Take this and all messages to the Lord for the truth but Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! Repent, Repent, Repent! Caribbean, East & Gulf Coast Tsunami? David Eells - 10/30/2013 (David's notes in red) First of all, we are prophesying nothing, but we are trying to put together the warning picture that God is sending, here a little and there a little, while attempting to weed out the paranoia that always comes to discredit the truth. The Lord says, "We prophesy in part", so pray for your own revelation for your own area. God gives dreams, visions and prophecies to warn people to repent and cry out for mercy, that He may lessen the destruction and bring revival… Will one piece of a meteor/asteroid/comet hit the water west of Puerto Rico, striking a fault at the Mona Trench and causing a 12-magnitude earthquake? (Some say we have never seen a 12. They have never seen a planet fly by with many times the gravity of earth with a tail full of meteors and asteroids. They have never seen an earth tide that rips the crust of the earth lose in waves.) And the resulting tsunami will devastate the islands there and the East and Gulf Coasts? Efrain Rodriguez and others had a revelation of this below. Something like this could set off that East Coast quake that could bring a domino effect on the rest of the faults across the nation. I believe through prayer the height of the tsunami and depth it will reach into the US has been lessened since these revelations were given. The three asteroids in the area would mean the very big rock has been broken up by God as it came through the atmosphere. People should ask God now if they are to move from the Gulf and East Coasts and the West Coast. Three asteroids/meteors/comets begin the troubles. In Virginia Boldea's vision, three comets were at peace but then they struck the earth and it was the beginning of troubles. This could also be a cause for the darkness and the many fireballs falling. Then many fireballs fall. … {Rev.8:5} And the angel taketh the censer; and he filled it with the fire of the altar, and cast it upon the earth: and there followed thunders, and voices, and lightnings, and an earthquake. {6} And the seven angels that had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. {7} And the first sounded, and there followed hail and fire, mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of the earth was burnt up, and the third part of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. The smoke would darken the sky as in Leon's revelation. {Luk.12:49} I came to cast fire upon the earth (Could there be something literal about this?); and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?... Mark Bevan: I came across this map that you will find very interesting. From NOAA: "A magnitude 7.3 Magnitude earthquake on October 11, 1918, in the Mona Passage, west of Puerto Rico, was caused by displacement along four segments of a normal fault, oriented N-S in the Mona Canyon. The earthquake generated a tsunami with runup heights reaching 6 meters, causing extensive damage along the western and northern coasts of Puerto Rico. The earthquake and tsunami caused $29 million damage, 116 people were killed and 100 were reported missing". While the map is pictured in time increments, it would certainly seem to back up my theories. Besides what is the coincidence that a tsunami already occurred in the exact location within the last 100 years, proving the fault line and enabling a study to be done on the potential impacts? David: This article speaks of the deepest submarine trench in the Atlantic, about 5.2 miles deep, along the north side of Puerto Rico and into the Mona Straight, which is a tremendous landslide possibility. The fact that the North American Plate is pushing under the Caribbean Plate at Puerto Rico, making it seismically active, and the previous quake and tsunami in the Mona Straight seems to imply they don't need a space rock to have an earthquake there. This type of situation with one plate pushing under another is where the worst quakes happen. We have thought that this could set off the East Coast quake that has a domino effect to the West Coast, but since the North American plate goes down to and under the Caribbean plate in the Mona Passage or Straight, these two quakes could be one and the same. Fragment Passes Over Puerto Rico? Eve Brast - 12/14/2013 David's notes in red I had a short dream on Saturday morning, December 14th. This dream was strange because it was like I suddenly appeared in the dream, like I was dropped into or popped into the situation without any notice. I dreamed that I was suddenly standing next to an airport runway on the island of Puerto Rico. (Where Efrain Rodriguez' dream took place.) As I looked northward and back toward the west, I could see the Gulf coastlines, Florida and the Eastern coast of the U.S. but they looked distorted in the distance, like viewing them through a telescopic fish lens and I could see white rays of light reflecting from the edges of the lens around everything that I was seeing. The runway of the airport ran from east to west. I didn't have much time to gain my bearings, as I became aware of a large fireball plunging toward the earth from the east. (As in Efrain's dream.) It made a roaring sound as it passed over my head. I thought in the dream.) (We have prayed that this rock will not be as big as the Lord first told us.) I never got to witness the impact because after I saw this, I was suddenly up in the heavenly realm where I was witnessing an angel in the same direction that the fireball came from scooping up hot glowing coals from an altar with both hands. (From the same direction indicates the source of the judgment. The glowing coals could mean asteroid/meteors will come as fireballs. {Rev.8:4} And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand. (Fiery judgment before the tribulation.) {5} And the angel taketh the censer; and he filled it with the fire of the altar, and cast it upon the earth: and there followed thunders, and voices, and lightnings, and an earthquake. (Then the tribulation trumpets begin.) {6} And the seven angels that had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. {7} And the first sounded (trib begins), and there followed hail and fire, mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of the earth was burnt up, and the third part of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. (Showers of meteors/fireballs.) I heard the Spirit say, "Three-thirds". (This makes a whole that is made up of three parts. This could be one rock that breaks into three when it enters the atmosphere. This could also indicate some dreams we have received about the beginning of the end-time troubles: Three Asteroids / Meteors Begin Troubles; 3 Comets, the Beginning of Pain.) He then placed the coals from the altar into a bowl next to the altar where they melted into blood. As he raised his hands up from the bowl, one last tiny fragment of coal fell from the angel's palm and hit the blood in the center of the bowl and it sent large ripples traveling through the blood to the edges of the bowl. (Tsunamis across the Atlantic.) (This fragment could be the fireball that I had witnessed in the previous scene of the dream [falling into the sea].) (This could agree with Lakeisha's dream in which God was judging the Harlot and Beast with fireballs.) The meaning of this dream seems to show a literal meaning as well as Spiritual representations, based on the scriptures Father gave me. These judgments will bring a great revival. Meteor Shower Beginning ... Luis Parada - 07/16/13 Jeannette Henderson: Brother David, my son Luis, since he was a little boy, loved the Lord. When he was at the nursery school when he was two or three, he told me that Jesus used to come to his nap time and take him to Heaven, but that the teacher didn't know. When he was in grammar school and we used to pray and I read stories of the Bible to him, he used to tell me that Jesus was coming to his room and would sit by his bed. My mom had a vision of him preaching. He testifies of the Lord and has a lot of wisdom in his words when he talks about the Lord to others, but has not fulfilled the vision yet. Luis Parada: In my dream, I was in a vehicle with a couple of people. I'm not sure who they were but they were about my age. We were driving not sure to where but it was evening because the Sun was setting. I remember saying the sky looked beautiful. Then I noticed in the distance a sparkle that looked like a shooting star and before I could say anything, they said, "Look! A shooting star". But then it was brighter and split into three and I said, "That's not a shooting star! That's an asteroid/meteor! " Then in the distance I could see the ball of fire from the impact. After the first impact, we looked in the sky and there were hundreds of shining lights coming through like a shower of them. (Earth going through the Firey tail of Planet X/Nibiru.) They panicked and got scared, asking, "What do we do?" The first thought that came to mind was, I was right! God promised never to come back with water but that the next time would be with fire. I said in a calm voice, "There's nothing you can do. You can't hide from this. If it hits, then it hits and that's it". Then I realized I wasn't scared or nervous but thought, It's time; it's begun! Then I woke up. (This is the beginning of major Judgments.) The weird part is, I very seldom have dreams and if I do I only recall bits and pieces but the ones that I'm able to remember vividly seem important. We have had many dreams of dangerous fireballs falling from the sky and killing people that sounded more like an asteroid or meteor breaking up and coming through the atmosphere of Earth, as we were passing through the tail of Planet X/Nibiru, than the normal meteor showers we receive every year, which are rarely dangerous. However, there seems to be a danger shown in this dream with a ball of fire impact. And there seems to be a timing with this dream in the saying, "It's time; it's begun! " The earths great judgments begin here. Notice that "It's time; it's begun! " sounds a lot like 3 Comets, the Beginning of Pain in Virginia's vision which I believe speaks of asteroids/meteors, which coming through the atmosphere look like comets, and in other cases three asteroids/meteors hit the earth. The Beginning of Pain (Three Comets) May 25, 1997 * Virginia Boldea (daughter of Dumitru Duduman and mother of Michael Boldea, Dumitru's interpreter.) It was not a dream. It was late. I am sure it was past midnight on the 25th of May, and I had just returned from a hard day's work. First I had gone to a few villages to give help. Afterwards, I began praying for a few hours. I lay in my bed listening to a prophecy I had received. Suddenly, I began to see, even though my eyes were shut. I saw an immense flower garden. The flowers were as tall as a man with a healthy stems, but the buds were blue and bent forward. Every flower only had one bud. A cloud suddenly appeared near the garden and it appeared to be very close to the ground. (Meaning the earth is bearing the first fruits of the Lord as trouble comes.) A man dressed in white stood on the cloud. He was slightly taller than a normal man and in his hand he had a trumpet in which he began to blow. (The trumpets are judgements) The sounds that came out of this trumpet would turn letters which would then turn into words in the sky and then ignite, burning up the heavens. I did not understand the writing because it was an unknown tongue. I did, however, recognize that it was in Hebrew. (A Word of the Lord!) There were a handful of comets in the sky which looked to be peaceful. Suddenly three of them, all different sizes, began to head toward the earth. When they hit the earth there was total devastation. As I looked up, the sky turned black and I saw thunder. The thunder was also black. A dark cloud lifted up and it began to rain. When I looked closer I saw that it was not rain but drops of blood. As I looked to my left, I saw another man standing on another cloud. He was very tall, dressed in white, with his hands raised high. Each time he moved his hands, fireballs would come out of his fingers. I looked, awestruck, at the man's height and the way his face shown and radiated. Then a powerful voice said: "Remember what I have shown you. This will be the beginning of the pain that I will allow upon the earth". He repeated this phrase again, after which he spoke to me: "You prepare yourself, be strong, and draw close to me with fasting and prayer for I will come to show you things more terrifying than these". Then everything disappeared. Notice also in Luis' revelation that after the three asteroids/meteors hit, many fireballs come probably as earth passes through the tail of Planet X.. Asteroids and Tsunamis Destroy Coasts Ann Peterson In April 2001, I was moved to ask God what was coming at us. The question was as generic as that...but not the answer. I was then shown North America on a globe. I saw three balls of fire streaking across the globe. One hits in the Gulf of Mexico...another hits near the east coast of Florida...and the third is farther out in the Atlantic. I then see America get smaller. Florida is washed over, as well as much of the East Coast and the coastal areas of the Gulf. I asked if people would be warned of this event in any way. I was told that this was the warning. I asked again about the others who did not hear or see initial warnings. I heard that there would be a very small window of opportunity for people to get out of harm's way...but most would still not listen. Then the only "close-up" view I got was of I-95...it was a death trap...and those were the words I heard, too. Then I was shown a short period of relative stillness; then I saw the middle of America rise up, then separate into two land masses with a great body of water between the two halves. (The New Madrid Faultline separates the US.) When I inquired about what I was to do...I live in Florida...I was shown a specific area in North Carolina that I had to be at. I was also told I would be there before this happened. I am currently planning my move for asap. Cosmic Disturbance Bonnie - 09/22/13 [ link ] (David's notes in red) "My daughter, keep trusting in Me to reveal Myself more fully to you in these dark times. The cosmic event is truly upon you now and you will receive more warning in the coming days to give you time to prepare for this event. There is more coming, My child, than you could possibly imagine, but there is to be no fear in your heart for I have fore-ordained everything that is to come to pass. My children will be infused with power from on high and through My Holy Spirit will be sent out as witnesses to bring in the last harvest before the door closes. Before this is to take place, you will experience a sudden cataclysmic event caused by a cosmic disturbance that will be seen and heard all over the world. When this event comes to pass you will know that the three days of darkness are upon you. You must go to your homes and stay indoors. (Like the Passover) My angels will protect you from harm. There will be time between the cosmic event and the darkness falling for you to go to your homes with your families and remain safely inside. I will be giving each one of you specific instructions through My Holy Spirit at that time. My angels will be surrounding your homes and properties and keeping you safe from the evil one and the coming darkness. (Sounds like a Passover of the destroyer before God's people going into the wilderness tribulation.) Events Will Come Rapidly Now Bonnie - 10/21/13 [ link ] (David's notes in red) "Events will come rapidly now, My daughter. They will come in quick succession. There will hardly be any time between one event and the next and you will not be able to catch your breath in between what is coming and the next event on the horizon. (A domino effect.) Seek Me now at all times - stay close to Me and focus on My love for you, My children. Remember that I have you all in the palm of My hand and I will not allow the enemy to touch a hair on your heads. (But many of God's children who do not follow the Lord as disciples and believe in His Passover's Psalm 91 power could die. Holiness is necessary for faith and faith is necessary for deliverance. {1Jn.3:20} because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. {21} Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God; {22} and whatsoever we ask we receive of him, because we keep his commandments and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. {23} And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he gave us commandment. {24} And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us. Psalm 91 has a condition" "He that abideth in the secret place of the Most High [Jesus] shall abide under the shadow of the almighty".) I have told you, My daughter, that My 3-day warning will soon be heard, seen and felt by all mankind. The earth will tremble and shake and darkness will descend. First you will see the cosmic event that I have forewarned you of, then the three days of darkness will descend. Stay in your homes, My children, as I have told you and I will come to you - each one of you - and reveal Myself to you. My angels will protect you and your families and homes during this time. You will have light in your dwellings, while there is darkness outside and many strange things happen upon the earth. You will be totally protected by My myriad of angels, so fear not, My children, for I am coming for you and will not delay! Who Will Escape Missy received by faith at random, 2Ki 20:6 … I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. (The Bride city will escape the beast and his judgments.) Deb received by faith at random, (Psa.33:18) Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him, Upon them that hope in his lovingkindness; (19) To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. (20) Our soul hath waited for Jehovah: He is our help and our shield. (21) For our heart shall rejoice in him, Because we have trusted in his holy name. (22) Let thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, be upon us, According as we have hoped in thee. Many religious people will not escape. The Storm Is Here! Cherrie Archer – prophecy The convergence of all things evil has arrived. There is nowhere to run. Man cannot run, he cannot hide. Evil permeates the land. Many flee in hopes of avoiding disaster. This will not help. The entire world is enveloped in evil. Man's only hope is in Me. Yet, man believes in his heart that he will figure it out and still come out on top. Foolishness, Foolishness at its core, a lie told by Satan and believed by man. No Repentance No Forgiveness No Relationship in Me. Am I the acquaintance in man's life? The one called on in that desperate hour of need to pull man out of a mess. Yet, to be forgotten until the next emergency comes? Is man a user? With no true love or caring for the one who he calls upon for help only. Put yourself in the same position. One who calls themselves friend, even family, only wants to talk to you when they need something, want something or are calling for help. Because you truly care, you help, until you can't help any more. These friends and family suddenly have nothing good to say about you. Turning their backs on you rather than helping you when you are in need. This is the state of the church. Man goes to put in his time in, yet never seeks a true relationship with Me. Saying you believe in Me is like saying you know an acquaintance, you have truly never known. Never having spent any time with Me man doesn't know My voice. He doesn't know how to take instruction through discernment. The days are upon you that man must know My voice. If man does not have an intimate relationship with Me he does not know My voice. If man does not know My voice he does not know Me. Does man invite others into his home whom he does not know? Or he does know them to have a dark heart only saying the right words to be let in. Is that man at your home for good or evil purposes? Is he there to cause descension among those who love the master of the house? Why would a stranger be allowed in? Just because he said, I Believe? Foolishness and lies taught by the master of manipulation Satan, the father of lies, and the author of confusion. Mixing My word with a lie to create a new doctrine that leads many to Hell. Know the truth, it will set you free. … Jesus Huge Quakes Bring Man-child David Eells – 2/18/24 So we have seen that the asteroid/meteor from heaven begins a domino effect of earthquakes that travels across the U.S. and the world. Now we will look at the U.S. portion. I believe the DS has prepared the groundwork for this domino effect of quakes by fracking, tunneling and explosions, HARP, etc, under the U.S.. I believe we have learned that the Lord will use what they have done to make them guilty but He controls the trigger asteroid/meteor and He will beat them to the punch by 3 days. About a month or so ago I read the DS was threatening a huge quake disaster down the whole west coast. No doubt this was a warning to the Alliance to stop the arrests, declass, GCR; all very destructive to them. Suddenly we are receiving alarming revelations from experts that it is about to happen, probably to justify it as a natural occurrence. However they have been saying we can't predict an earthquake? Obviously they have changed their mind when they want you to believe one is coming. The “whole west coast” would likely involve a northern and southern fault zone. Southern fault zone: Information has just leaked out on 2-6-24 that the San Andreas fault was about to let go at possibly an 8.0. https://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2024/02/we-have-6-days-left-the-san-andreas-crack-is-about-to-cause-the-biggest-tsunami-in-history-3807666.html They said, “The San Andreas Fault is a ticking time bomb under California, stretching over 800 miles from the north to the south of the state. It's not just a crack in the ground; it's the dividing line between two massive slabs of the Earth's crust, the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. This fault is infamous for its potential to unleash catastrophic earthquakes, like the 1906 San Francisco quake that shook the very foundation of California, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.” Northern fault zone: Another warning the next day on 2-7-24. “Bracing for Armageddon: FEMA's (DS) Warning of ‘ANY DAY NOW' 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake Along the Cascadia Subduction Zone Spells Catastrophe” – American Media Group (amg-news.com) (This northern fault zone would along with the southern San Andreas cover the whole west coast in catastrophe just as the DS has threatened. https://amg-news.com/bracing-for-armageddon-femas-warning-of-any-day-now-9-0-magnitude-earthquake-along-the-cascadia-subduction-zone-spells-catastrophe/ This threat is likely coming from the DS to cause the Alliance to back down but they are constantly arresting the DS Khazarians and sooner or later they will take them all down. Either way the Lord said this judgment will happen for the sins of the people. People have caught on to what God is also saying, that the DS is using their earthquake weapons to beat nations into submission. Here is an example: KatIstheSea3 @katisthesea3 https://anonup.com/@KatistheSea3 07 February, 01:50 To be clear, the Earthquakes in Turkey & Syria ARE NOT SPECIAL FORCES BLOWING UP D.U.M.B.S . When Special Forces blow up D.U.M.B.S THEY DO NOT KILL HUMANITY & DESTROY CITIES & TOWNS. (This is the DS depopulation m.o.) Turkey wants to leave the Rockefeller/deep state NATO [a Nazi Org.] & has applied to join BRICS [which includes 3/4 of the world population now.]” 2-6-23 Q The Storm Rider “THE STAGING/FALSE FLAG CATACLYSMIC EARTHQUAKE by use of High Grade Military Tectonic Weapons for [DS] U.S. interest in OIL from the Mid East → Ukraine & N Europe..” ROTHSCHILDS controlling [DS] MIL OPS created the EARTHQUAKE in TURKEY as a HUGE WARNING FOR TURKEY who is planning to LEAVE NATO & join BRICS. ROTHSCHILDS just sent a message to Turkey. Rothschilds also created Fukushima in Japan. THESE EARTHQUAKE WARS ARE REAL The DS are in a fight to keep NATO together as SEVERAL COUNTRIES WANT TO LEAVE the NATO UN Regimen.” DS Scientists Conspire to Set Off Huge Earthquakes Sandy Shaw - 10/18/11 (David's notes in red) I dreamed I was sitting and listening to a group of scientists argue and they were talking over my head with their scientific words. Half of the scientists were arguing, "We should not do that because we don't know what the ramifications of that are, nor do we know what chain reactions will take place". In the dream, I didn't know what "that" was referring to. The other half of the scientists begin arguing that they do know the outcome of that, as they have calculations and results from the previous times they have done it. One man from the group speaking against it interjected loudly with, "Not of this magnitude". (Magnitude of course speaks of earthquakes. Will they set off a chain reaction of faults that all effect one another. Sandy Shaw and Rick Sergent had almost the same revelation that quakes would cross the US in a chain reaction. Eve Brast had a revelation that 7 big quakes would go around the world. I believe they would use a combination of HAARP, fracking, and their underground tunneling and explosions down those tunnels to connect faults as they have already done. Also they would use their Tesla earthquake machines that we have heard they have underground. I believe the stress effects of Planet X Nibiru will also be used by them as other revelations seem to show.) There are many scriptures, dreams and visions that speak of Jesus coming in the Man-child body of reformers at the time of large earthquakes crossing the US. From scripture we see that history always repeats. Ecc 1:9 That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10 Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us. Jesus was the first New Testament Man-child who was a type for the coming Man-child body of reformers. Scripture shows that Jesus died with an “earthquake” and was risen to the throne with a “great earthquake” in three days. Jesus' resurrection was also accompanied by the “out resurrection” of saints who appeared to the people. Php 3:11 if by any means I may attain unto the out-resurrection from the dead. (The Numeric pattern is in the original Greek words out-resurrection. Isa. 64:1-4, Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might quake at thy presence,(God's presence is coming with quakes. He is coming in His Man-child body by Word and Spirit, as it was with Jesus, as time will surely tell.) 2 as when fire kindleth the brushwood, and the fire causeth the waters to boil; to make thy name known to thine adversaries (This will be a great judgment on the wicked of the U.S. and the world.), that the nations may tremble at thy presence! (A great revival will spring from this. Many lost or apostate will turn to the Lord of the Bible.) 3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains quaked at thy presence. 4 For from of old men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen a God besides thee, who worketh for him that waiteth for him. (The righteous will be exonerated as judgment finally comes to the wicked who oppressed them.) Psa 97:5 The mountains melted like wax (Volcanic activity follows earthquakes.) at the presence of Jehovah, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. I received this text that points out that when the Lord comes in Judah as the Man-child, the waters recede. - Psa 114:1-8 When Israel went forth out of Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language; 2 Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3 The sea saw it, and fled; The Jordan was driven back. 4 The mountains skipped like rams, The little hills like lambs. (The presence of the Lord causes earthquakes and the sea to flee away.) 5 What aileth thee, O thou (Red) sea, that thou fleest? Thou Jordan, that thou turnest back?(Looks like an earthquake and Tsunami.) 6 Ye mountains, that ye skip like rams; Ye little hills, like lambs? 7 Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the God of Jacob, 8 Who turned the rock into a pool of water, The flint into a fountain of waters. I received this about a witness showing the gulf waters receding at least a half a mile out of Tampa Bay and Coral bay and other areas for over 12 hours. (This is proof that God can do this. This was seen in areas of the world where there wasn't a hurricane too, like it was at the Red Sea) - HURRICAN IAN UPDATE - NO WATER AT THE COAST IN THE GULF OF MEXICO We will notice that the great shaking is accompanied by the coming of Jesus in the Man-child and the change of fortunes for God's people as they go into the wilderness. It is all coming soon and we need to be ready. {Hag.2:7} and I will shake all nations; and the precious things (or desire) of all nations shall come (Jesus in the Man-child is typed by Zerubbabel in this chapter and He comes with the shaking.); and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts. {8} The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts (As we have seen Cyrus conquered Babylon and freed God's people giving a gift of Babylon's gold and silver to rebuild the temple) {9} The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place (The true house of God) will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts. This shaking of all nations happens at the birth of the Man-child ministry. It is only to happen once more since the time Paul wrote of it in {Heb 12:25} See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven: {26} whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven. (Signifying a disturbance in the solar system.) {27} And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made (by man), that those things which are not shaken may remain. {28} Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken (The Kingdom of heaven is where God rules and we submit.), let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe: Back to {Haggai 2:3} Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes as nothing? (i.e. The Church, the house of God, is a fake mess because it has departed from His Word.) {4} Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel (meaning: "born from Babylon" which is first fruits Man-child leadership to come out of apostasy to rebuild the Kingdom), saith Jehovah; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Jehovah, and work: for I am with you, saith Jehovah of hosts, {5} according to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt (through the Red Sea where the wicked were judged), and my Spirit abode among you: fear ye not. {6} For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; {7} and I will shake all nations (As we saw this was also spoken of by Paul in Hebrews 12:25-29 as the great shaking that separated those man made kingdoms who could be shaken from those who could not for they are in the Kingdom of God.); and the precious [things] (desired) of all nations shall come; and I will fill this house with glory, saith Jehovah of hosts. (This is the glory of the Lord's presence in the rebuilt temple of God's people) {8} The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith Jehovah of hosts. (Cyrus'/ Trumps gift.) {9} The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, (Because the Latter Rain is greater than the Former Rain) saith Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, saith Jehovah of hosts... {21} Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; {22} and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms (The Deep State throne in the nations is falling now); and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; (The beast army is destroyed as at the Red Sea), every one by the sword of his brother (As when the nations came against Jerusalem, the Bride). {23} In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts. (A signet is a sign of Authority such as Mordecai and Joseph received as types of the Man-child body.) I am convinced that we must be entitled to the Passover of this judgment, which was paid for by Jesus, when it does come. Make sure your heart is right with God and your brethren by abiding in Jesus Christ.) Earthquakes & Refuge Dream by Sandy Shaw - May 2011 Notes: [ David | Deb Horton ] In a dream, I saw the NYC skyline from a distance and it was shaking. All the skyscrapers and buildings were going back and forth. (This is the eastern faultline we have been speaking of.) Then it was as if NYC zoomed in closer and I saw all the buildings collapsing. Many people were dying all around me. I saw the ground really shaking, vibrating and cracks were starting to form. I looked up and saw many piles of rubble from the fallen buildings and then the ground started buckling and moving the piles of rubble. At that time, I started seeing fire come up from out of the ground. I was observing this from very far up in the air and was able to see very far into the distance. As I saw fire erupting from the ground, the Lord took me closer and I was then positioned right over the fires, looking down into the fire. I could feel the heat on my face and at first I thought it was gas lines erupting that were causing the fire. As I got closer, I saw what looked like red hot mud or clay with flames and it was oozing out of the buckling cracks of rubble. (This could be volcanic action of lava. Chuck Thacker said that an earthquake fault was discovered directly under NYC in the 1920s by a subway construction crew. They reported a crevasse so deep that they could not hear anything they dropped in hit the bottom. Some way they poured concrete over it and continued. This fault is under 14th Street, which runs from 1st Avenue to 11th Avenue in Manhattan. This is speculated to be the hardened dome of a lava bubble, a really big lava bubble. The subway line was moved over enough to where they found footing to continue. We used to ride the train there all the time.) I saw these cracks (likened to a glass breaking) headed from the East coast toward the center of the nation to the New Madrid fault. There were small, large and gigantic cracks heading toward the eastern side of the New Madrid fault line. (These cracks are called "spider legs".) I was taken near to the center of the nation where I could see both coasts of the country and I was hovering over a large crack in the ground. I was facing south, with the Great Lakes behind me and the crack went all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. The ground began shaking and the new cracks began forming going back toward the East coast, moving in all directions like a fan very quickly. The shaking was constant from this point on but at different times it slowed down, becoming soft like tremors, and at other times it was shaking hard, violently. As the cracks were moving, they reached about half of the distance of the large crack (New Madrid) and then my attention was drawn to the right of me and I looked west of the New Madrid crack and saw cracks going in all directions toward the West coast. They were cracks of many different sizes and they stopped at different places as they hit other cracks and then headed in different directions and some went all the way to the San Andreas fault in California. As these cracks hit the San Andreas, the ground was rising and falling to meet each other like hands coupling together as they join and then separate. California was shaking hard and at the same time so was the New Madrid area. The cracks began separating the areas where Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky meet and went all the way over to North Carolina. These cracks and many more are what isolate the boat-shaped piece of land in the Tennessee Valley and then I saw the crack around the boat fill with water. This is where I turned around to look at the Great Lakes, or where they were supposed to be, and all the water began rushing down, filling up all the areas in the center of the nation that have been affected by all the quakes. It emptied these areas that split the U.S. Water flooded in from the Gulf of Mexico, as well. When all the flooding was done, many portions of the US were under water (the map below of dark areas roughly drawn). (Sandy said some of this water may be temporary but some will stay.) ...During this dream, everything was happening in fast motion, but I knew that in reality it would happen over a slightly longer period of time. (We have heard that the Craton plate is drifting to the West, which would open up many faults. This could be happening over a short period of time.) I had the exact same dream three times over a period of three months. Joseph said: {Gen.41:32} And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh, it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. To sum this up, Sandy said that the NYC quake will begin the sequence, then the New Madrid began to quake and then the West coast began to shake and Tennessee shook. Sandy said this sequence would happen over a longer period of time than in her dream but she didn't believe it was a very long period. Confirmation Rick Sergent In March of 2011, I was given this vision from the Lord: I saw the word Earthquake suspended over a map of the United States. Three golden rods came from the word Earthquake. One pointed what I thought was just north of Washington, D.C. but was difficult to determine because it was more like a geography map and not showing cites. (The Eastern fault literally damaged the Washington Monument.) The second pointed to the Midwest (New Madrid) and the third pointed to California. This seems to indicate the possibility of a series of quakes indicated in Sandy Shaw's dream, in a simpler form in my vision. (She mentioned these same places plus a lesser known seismic zone in a boat shape in the TN Valley.) Confirmation Alenna Timoshchuk - 9/5/21 (David's notes in red) In my dream I started watching the weather report. I saw a map of the United States. There were three red dots on the right side of the U.S. going in a line from up to down. (This confirms Sandy's N.Y. quake dream that revealed that the large quakes would begin on the East coast at NY in the U.S. but as we saw they were triggered by the plates slipping at Puerto Rico from the asteroid/ meteor.) Then many red, zig zag lines spread out from each dot. It showed a great earthquake that was about to happen. (This is the New Madrid quakes that come after NY.) The weather man mentioned 3 states but I only remember Virginia and Louisiana, although when I looked up the map, Louisiana didn't make sense to me because that's not where the third dot was in the image I saw in my dream. (I believe her red dot was on the upper part of the faultline. This old faultline is the NY/Alabama anomaly which goes through “Virginia” (confirmed) and it was found later to go through Alabama to “Louisiana” (confirmed) and into the Gulf where the BP oil well blew out under extreme pressure. This may have well lubricated this fault.) Then I saw the U.S. splitting from the point where those 3 dots were, moving in the shape of an L, going upwards. I was paying close attention to Tennessee because it looked like it was becoming an island (Part of it becomes a peninsula, almost an island.), and I wanted to make sure the state where we lived would be okay. (It will be more than OK.) Then I woke up. (Heb. 12:26, ...Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.) More confirmations of the Lord coming in His Man-child body of reformers in the midst of great earthquakes. Psa 18:7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations also of the mountains quaked And were shaken, because he was wroth. 8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals were kindled by it. 9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; And thick darkness was under his feet. Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity: and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12 I will make a man more rare than fine gold, even a man than the pure gold of Ophir.13 Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the earth shall be shaken out of its place, in the wrath of Jehovah of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. (The Day of the Lord's wrath is twice, after the tribulation of the Bride at the beginning of the tribulation and after the tribulation of the Church at the end of the tribulation.) Isa 24:16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs: Glory to the righteous. But I said, I pine away, I pine away, woe is me! the treacherous have dealt treacherously (The DS Judas' destroy their own people.); yea, the treacherous have dealt very treacherously. 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. 18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. 19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. 20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. (The DS leadership is being destroyed) 22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison; and after many days shall they be visited. (At the end of 1000 years they will be visited and brought to the Great White Throne Judgment.) This text is spoken against the King of Babylon, in Isa.14:4, the DS leadership, who are satanists under satan. Satan was cast down from heaven with his angels in Rev 12 by the warfare of the saints. Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations! (As Satan has used the DS to do using the might of the U.S..) 13 And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God (usurping authority over the saints.); and I will sit upon the mount of congregation (He wants Mt. Zions authority), in the uttermost parts of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall gaze at thee, they shall consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; (Notice” A “man” representing a corporate man, inhabited by Satan.) 17 that made the world as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities thereof; that let not loose his prisoners to their home? 18 All the kings of the nations, all of them, sleep in glory, every one in his own house. 19 But thou art cast forth away from thy sepulchre like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain, that are thrust through with the sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a dead body trodden under foot. 20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil-doers shall not be named for ever. Joel 3:15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 16 And Jehovah will roar from Zion (Notice His presence is on the earth in Zion.), and utter his voice from Jerusalem (The Bride); and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but Jehovah will be a refuge unto his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel. Nah 1:5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. 6 Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him. 7 Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that take refuge in him. One other thing we have not covered here very much is the tsunamis to the Gulf, Atlantic, and Pacific coasts and overseas coasts that come from the asteroids and earthquakes which could kill as many people as the earthquakes themselves. East Coast Tsunami - Plates Move Dr. Patricia Green - 06/25/2015 On April 17th, 2013, this is the dream that I had. And in this dream, my husband and I were traveling in a vehicle in North Carolina, and we were driving up a mountain road, and we saw this policeman with a blue light flashing as a warning signal, and he had stopped the traffic which prevented us from proceeding up the mountain. So, in the dream, I got out of the vehicle, and I walked up the steep mountain road, and the officer motioned for me to stop. Then, all of a sudden, behind the officer, I saw this large wave getting ready to crest over the top of this mountain, and it was heading towards me. So, in the dream, I placed my back to the wave, and I was able -- the wave kind of washed me down back to the bottom of the mountain. Now, at that moment in the dream, I knew that the Atlantic Ocean had washed in as far as this mountain in North Carolina. That was my first dream on April 17th. Then, ten days later, on April 27, 2013, I had a second dream and, in this dream, I was at a beach on the east coast, and there were many people at the beach enjoying the sand and the sun and the ocean, and there were these college-aged boys who had carried a couch and an area rug to the shoreline as a joke, and I warned them that the tide would come in and wash their couch away, but they just ignored me, and they began to laugh. Then, all of a sudden, as they were mocking me and laughing at me, I saw this massive wave that was taller than the hotels, taller than the buildings, and it was just positioned to crash onto the beach. In all my life, I've never seen a wave this high -- in pictures or even when I have been to the beach. It was literally towering over the top of the building. That was the second dream. Then, three days later on April 30th, the Lord gave me -- it was a vision. Let me explain -- when I say a vision, it's not an opened-eyed vision. It's a closed-eye vision were the Lord will actually form pictures, or sometimes, it will look like a video clip that I see with my eyes closed. Then, He begins to explain to me. If I don't understand what I'm seeing, he begins to explain to me then what he has just shown me. So, in this vision, I was walking side by side with Jesus, and He began to speak these words to me. He said, "Patricia, I want to show you some things". Then, Jesus parted the clouds so that I could see the earth below because we were like above in the heavens and I could see myself on the earth, and there was this mighty wave getting ready to crash on the shoreline. But, before the waves hit in this vision, I was lifted up. When I was lifted up, I could see that the wave was like hundreds of feet tall. It wasn't just a little wave. It was hundreds of feet tall. Jesus spoke these words to me. He said, "This wave will hit the east coast". He said, "Warn the people to get out. This mighty wave will devastate coastal cities and wash inland for many miles. Florida will be decimated. Washington D.C. will be under water. New York Harbor will flood the city. In North Carolina, the water will come as far as the mountains. The water will not go beyond the Appalachian mountains". He said, "There are those that will not believe what you are reporting. They will perish in the wave". He said, "Millions of people will lose their lives". He said, "Nothing of this magnitude happens on the earth unless I speak it through my prophets. I have shown many of my prophets this tsunami, and they are also reporting it will happen". We know in Amos 3:7, it says, "Surely the Lord God does nothing unless he reveals his secrets to his servants/ the prophets". The Holy Spirit said, "The United States of America is about to swing into a new season. At first, it will be a prosperous time, but it will be short-lived. (We are coming to the end of the seven years of plenty. Prosperity will come to some just before this.) Next, it will be a season of devastation from all directions. The first devastation will hit and, when she is reeling from that one, the next one will be right on its heels. When it looks like it cannot get any worse, indeed it will. This series of devastating events will cripple your nation and bring her to her knees. She will realize that she is no longer the powerful nation she once was. He said, "Look to the skies, and you will see the first devastation (three rocks incoming). (HOPE NOTE - could this be Nibiru? [colors in the sky]). Look to the seas, and you will see the next devastation (tsunami). Look to the earth, and you will see the third devastation (massive earthquakes). I, the Lord of the Heavens, the earth and beneath the earth have spoken".
The word “FAULT” has several synonyms that provide different shades of meaning. One is “WEAKNESS”, such as a moral weakness. Another is “RESPONSIBILITY”, as in the case of wrongdoing or failure. Yet another meaning is “GEOLOGICAL”, as in the San Andreas Fault. There seems to be no real positive aspect to the meanings associated to the word “FAULT”; but, WHEN you add the suffix “less” to that word, the meaning is completely flipped. It becomes “FAULTLESS”, a word of great strength! That is the work that James, the brother of JESUS, sets out to accomplish in his epistle that bears his name. James was teaching believers how to develop a faith without cracks and weaknesses, a FAULTLESS FAITH! No other New Testament book is quite like James. Catchy, practical, and in your face, the book of James jumps straight into the nitty gritty of daily life. James takes the lofty doctrines of the Gospel and brings them down to earth. James steps on your toes! At times, he punches you in the gut. You can't read James without being confronted with real life. James wants you to powerfully live out the Gospel you've been given, by helping you build a FAULTLESS FAITH! In this message, Pastor Joe Still leads a verse-by-verse study of this incredible book of JAMES, so we might build a FAULTLESS FAITH!
Israel's strength is once again being challenged in a multi-front war. Everyone's willpower has been tested from the top of government to everyday citizens. Once, it was only the South that was at risk. The general consensus among Israeli citizens is that everyone just has to try and do their part and attempt to carry on with daily life. For the most part, this is doable, and from what many are saying, requires little adjustment. However, Israelis from all corners are seasoned with similar conflicts of past. What about the newer citizens who recently made Aliyah? Eli Eisenberg used to reside comfortably in sunny Los Angeles, California, where the only thing shaking the ground was the San Andreas Fault. Now he lives miles away from a warzone, where 300,000 reservists remain on standby for orders while forces surgically work their way through the labyrinth of tunnels under Gaza. Chaz, host of Bad Jew, learns about this difficult adjustment with Eisenberg. With Hamas in Eli's backyard, one has to wonder: Was It Worth Moving To Israel? With the release of the recent report, "Characterizing the Geothermal Lithium Resource at the Salton Sea" by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the first formal assessment of the much-touted lithium resource there is quantified. As we discovered in our earlier Creative Frontline KPFK Radio broadcast with Imperial Valley's Luis Olmedo of Comite Civico Del Valle, there are three questions of note. In plain English– The first is "How much Lithium is available?" The second is "How long will it last?" The third is "Will it trigger earthquake swarms on the San Andreas Fault?" The first two are answered in depth. The third is anybody's guess. According to the report, "Seismicity rates to the W of the fault increase moderately during the period of geothermal operations, whereas those to the E of the fault increase significantly." They relegated the question to page 163, Injection, as in Oklahoma fracking is associated with seismic events–earthquakes. In summary, the report says, "The detailed subsurface response to the expected increase in injection and production is still unclear, and further study is needed to forecast the seismicity ratio and magnitude." "Will Lithium Extraction Set Off a Major Earthquake in California?"
Heather Crume, California Geological Survey Surface creep has been documented on the San Andreas fault (SAF) since the 1960s. From Parkfield in the southeast to San Juan Bautista (SJB) in the northwest, the SAF is largely creeping and accommodating most of the ~38 mm/year right-lateral plate motion. The SJB section of the SAF lies at the northwest boundary of the central creeping section, forming a creeping-to-locked transition. These transition sections are known to be potential zones for earthquake nucleation. Spatiotemporal changes in fault creep within this locking transition provide a potential quantitative measure for the assessment of the seismic hazard of the SAF system in the region. In addition to steady fault creep, episodic creep events characterized by accelerated slip of a few millimeters to centimeters over several days occur. However, knowledge of the along-strike and downdip-extent and propagation velocity of these events is limited by the sparse density of current creepmeters. How do these events propagate? What is their magnitude? What factors drive their occurrence? Moreover, there is a need to address environmental effects that can confound creep data and develop appropriate corrections. To address some of these questions, we have initiated a densification of the current creepmeter array by installing new instruments and renovating those in disrepair. We report results from some of these sensors. At Fox Creek, south of Hollister, we installed two creepmeters 130 m apart to measure creep event propagation velocity. One was equipped with an orthogonal sensor to measure dilation. During the dry season ≈0.16-0.35 mm of fault dilation accompanied complex creep event sequences with cumulative amplitudes of 3.5-5.8 mm. In the months following each sequence the fault zone slowly returned to its pre-event width. During one creep event a southward propagating dislocation was present with a velocity of 0.4 km/hour. We also observe distinct differences in amplitude and shape of creep events. Further, we are able to correct for apparent left-lateral slip due to fault closing during a rain event using the relationship between the orthogonal and oblique instruments.

The California News Service has unsurprising yet nevertheless unwelcome news for homeowners living in wildfire hazard severity zones.
The southern San Andreas Fault hasn't generated a major earthquake in 300 years. But why? Well, new research published in the scientific journal Nature explains that might be due to the shrinking of the nearby Salton Sea. Campaigns to ban books are on the rise in the U.S. That includes the Riverside County community of Temecula. There, the school board's decision to reject a textbook has sparked a censorship battle. Gary Fuis, USGS The 1989 M 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake is the first major event to occur along the San Andreas fault (SAF) zone in central California since the 1906 M 7.9 San Francisco earthquake. Given the complexity of this event, uncertainty has persisted as to whether this earthquake ruptured the SAF itself or a secondary fault. Recent work on the SAF in the Coachella Valley, in southern California, has revealed similar complexity, arising from a non-planar, non-vertical fault geometry, and has led us to re-examine the Loma Prieta event. We have compiled data sets and data analyses in the vicinity of the Loma Prieta earthquake including the 3-D seismic velocity model and aftershock relocations of Lin and Thurber (2012), potential-field data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) following the earthquake, and seismic refraction and reflection data from the 1991 profile of Catchings et al. (2004). The velocity model and aftershock relocations of Lin and Thurber (2012) reveal a geometry for the SAF that appears similar to that in the Coachella Valley (although rotated 180 °): at Loma Prieta the fault dips steeply near the surface and curves with depth to join the moderately southwest-dipping main rupture below 6-km depth, itself also non-planar. The SAF is a clear velocity boundary, with higher velocities on the northeast, attributable to Mesozoic accretionary and other rocks, and lower velocities on the southwest, attributable to Cenozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the La Honda block. Rocks of the La Honda block have been offset right-laterally hundreds of kilometers from similar rocks in the southern San Joaquin Valley and vicinity, providing evidence that the curved northeast fault boundary of this block is the plate boundary. Thus, we interpret that the Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on the SAF and not on a secondary fault.

Today, we get to interview Christine Burns. And of course, I'm your host, Mike Hingson. Glad to be here. And I want to thank you for being here with us. Hopefully you enjoy our episode today. And I want to hear about it afterward. But Christine is Gosh, what can I say about Christine burns, she is a lot of things. She's a New Zealand born lecturer. And I would say that the most important thing to say about Christine, she inspires people to take action stand up for what they believe in and not get stuck in the trivia of life. And just before we started recording, we were talking about all the stuff going on now because it's for all of us as we record this, it's getting close to the holidays, and all the things and all the drama of people dealing with the holidays, and so on. So Christine, love to hear your thoughts on that. But first, welcome to unstoppable mindset. Christine Burns 02:20 Thank you so much, Mike for having me on here. I feel privileged to be here with you. This is this is just awesome. This is amazing. Michael Hingson 02:27 So let's talk about the holidays and everybody preparing and all the crises that everybody is starting to have. Christine Burns 02:34 Yeah, it sounds nice. As we're talking before, I'm just writing a blog for our business world Institute. And just noticing the ramp in I say madness, and craziness of people when the end of year panic and got to have stuff done before the end of year. And then there's all the pressure for the people who you know, doing things around Christmas or holidays or taking breaks. And it's just rising the panic of madness. The craziness is just on the rise. Michael Hingson 03:04 And of course, part of the issue is, if people were more strategic, they might have gotten some of that stuff done earlier in the year. Christine Burns 03:13 Yeah, this and that is I love it. That's exactly one of the points that I brought up in there is that we, you know, we the general week, most people try and squeeze so much into the last two weeks or two months, they get to November, and it's like, oh my gosh, we have to have everything done. And so a whole lot of you know, what could be three or four months worth of work get squeezed into two months? Because haven't planted earlier. So if we'd looked at this before and planned it, it'd be fine. It'd be all sorted. Michael Hingson 03:43 Yeah, I've never been one for making lists. And I try to keep everything in my head. And I do that deliberately. I want to keep off Alzheimer's, you know, but I also, but I actually do Value Lists. And for me, lists now are putting reminders on to my Amazon Echo or things like that. And that way, I get reminded, and I deliberately tell it when I want to know about something. And so I guess I'm planning because what I do is I say remind me on such and such a day about this. And that way, the day does get really organized. So I don't write down list because writing it down is kind of out of sight out of mind if I put it even in Braille on something unless it comes up and I hear something or in your case, if you see something, what good is it so you can put a list on a wall and that's great. And that's important to do. So I guess my alternative to that is using electronic reminders or putting things in my calendar, even if it's just reminders and that works really well but it is important to plan and not get yourself trapped in the end of the year crisis. Christine Burns 04:54 And it is it's it's something that we notice with a lot of the people that we work with And I know that I used to, I used to always turn around and say, you know, golf settings overrated. Writing down lists is overrated and, and the more I've gone through things and realize how important it is to be organized and plan ahead. And that's something that I've really noticed is that the more I've looked at long term rather than short term all the time, then I have my I choose to do list each week. And I have it on a refill pad. And I have that with me all the time. So that it is it's, it's in front of my face whenever I'm sitting down anywhere, and I've got it with me right here right now next to me, so that it helps me do it. It's like planning is it makes life so much simpler and easier? It's just, yeah, I don't know why we don't do more of it. Michael Hingson 05:45 I know, I know, I have reminders in the system that will be brought up at the appropriate time by the echo. But also because I have it all programmed all hear it on my iPhone, if I'm not here or whatever. But I've got things that go out into the middle of next year, just that's the time I choose to deal with a particular thing. And it's all in the plan. Christine Burns 06:09 Yeah, and and it is it's, I mean, it's something I used to put, it's kind of weird, because I used to plan a lot for my hockey stuff. But I didn't plan in my own studies, or I didn't plan initially in our work stuff, because it was like, ah, in a workout, it'll be okay. And I used to just think I'd be able to fly by the seat of my pants. That was something that I'd say to myself a lot, even when I was teaching and lecturing, but I fly by the seat of my pants would be okay. And it never worked as well as when I planned it. Michael Hingson 06:38 Well, I'm used to organizing things in my brain. So the reality is most of those reminders, I'm going to remember anyway, but that's good. It is nice to have a fallback position on what technology does for us, right. Christine Burns 06:52 It's great when it works. And it's diabolical when it doesn't, and we can Michael Hingson 06:57 pick on it. So it's okay. Well tell us a little about you growing up and the early the early World of Christine. Christine Burns 07:06 Christine, I was funny. I was on a podcast the other day. And the lady said to me similar kind of question. And I was like, Oh my gosh, no, I had, I had a great childhood. I'm not one of these ones that can go oh, this happened. And that happened. And this was terrible. And things did I mean, you know, it wasn't all you know, rose tinted glasses. And it wasn't all hunky dory. But the thing was, it was kind of like my mum and dad, a brother both passed away now but they're both from Scotland. And you know, Dad's this six foot four big beast. And Mum was five foot half an inch. And the pair of them were just crazy fun. And it was it was awesome. And I just had a great time growing up, I learnt so many things from them. And I put so many of my learnings from them into everything that I did each day. I loved going to school, I enjoyed school, I was never top of the class I was you know, study hard and work hard and I'd get my 55 or 56%. And, you know, on a good day, I might use 70 something. But I just worked hard at it. And I chose I chose to make things work for me. And I think a lot of that was my learnings from Mum and Dad and and it was growing up in New Zealand was yeah, pretty free and easy. Really it was it was good times and in you know, play on the street and play with the neighbors and it was great fun. Yeah, it was good fun. Michael Hingson 08:31 And you know, that's that's kind of the way a childhood should be of course everybody has different experiences but what do you think you learn what's probably the most important thing or things that you learn from parents said as you said, had a lot of fun you had a lot of fun with them and so on What did you bring away from all that? Christine Burns 08:52 I think the and I've used it all the time is the one liner that my mum used to say often was these always away and and it wasn't you know, dad had his own business and mum did all the books and so it was you know, even when times were getting a little bit tougher, a little bit stretched and mum would be like there's always a way we can work this out. And so to have there's always a way and everything was just fun. It was like you know, it wasn't it wasn't a takeaway or minimize things it was to enjoy the moments. I think those were the definitely those were the key things really Michael Hingson 09:28 well, it's important to figure out a way and all too often we experience or find people who just can't move on or something happens and I don't know how to do with anything with that. I can't do that. I hear it all the time. You know one of my favorite examples of that is I use a guide dog and my eighth guide dog Alamo is down here being bored he's heard me talk on these podcasts before and he says where my bones but I hear so So many people say, Oh, my dog could never do that my dog would never be that well behaved. And I laugh when I hear that. I try not to do it out loud. But I laugh when I hear that to say, well, whose fault is that? Are you saying your dog is dumb? Or don't you understand that really, most dog training is really human training. And your dog could do that, if you would but take the time to teach your dog and to establish rules. Hmm. Christine Burns 10:29 So if I was talking with someone in the park the other day, and that was something you know, it's not about dog training, it's about training us as humans as training us as owners. And, and I and it is, it's all about our mindset. It's, it's what we choose, as our response or reactions to everything. I mean, I've been through similar situations to different people that I'm aware of, and that I know of, and we've had very different outcomes. And it's like, same thing Alamo can sit there and enjoy it and just go, You know what, this is kind of cool. And I'll listen to Mike and see whoever else is around and but you know, see, it's a choice. It's, and that's what I tend to do the same and mostly laugh on the inside when people go, I can't do this or never work out. That hurts me though. And when I hear people say, ouch, out, you poor thing. That is yeah, I almost feel sad in a way. Michael Hingson 11:22 Yeah. Because life is about choices. Christine Burns 11:27 Yes, it is. It's always about choices. And it's, it doesn't matter what happens. We can choose, you know, we always have a choice of and not to put a judgment on it. But it's that thing of what can go well, for us or what's right for us, and what can go against us or what isn't right for us in its itis Yeah, I think it's a tough thing when people allow external situations or allow other people to keep control of their life really, or they disempowered themselves and give it away. Yeah. Michael Hingson 12:02 You have clearly an extremely positive outlook about life and people and so on, which I love. But what is cause you to have such a positive outlook? Was it just your parents or what really brings that positive outlook out for you? Um, Christine Burns 12:19 I suppose it can't totally be my parents, because my sister doesn't have that same view. I think we like to Oregon cheese. I think it was, for me, it was the I played a lot of sport when I was young. And I think I learnt coming through the ranks that you know, like it was even sport, even school, I was like, if I'm going to get anywhere, I'm not going to have to work hard at it. It's that thing of like, when I put in the effort, I get good results, or I get good outcomes. And I noticed that I noticed the effort in the as the energy that I put into something. And then I saw what I got back from an hour I enjoyed it. I just now I don't know, I love learning. And it's like, why not learn more, you know, if I can learn a lesson from something, and then it allows me to move forward, friggin do it. Like it's, I don't know, it's easy to keep positive about it and have an optimistic perspective than get caught up in the BS? Michael Hingson 13:21 Well, I think you really just hit it. When you said you love learning you you worked at learning. And you recognized that there's value in learning and you can grow from it. And we, when we stop learning, then we really are shutting ourselves down because learning is part of everything we do. Christine Burns 13:41 Yeah, it is. It's and I mean, I, I think it's you know, I find it difficult when I'm not difficult or challenging, I suppose when people you know, haven't been involved in learning things or playing sport for me, you know, my first port of call talking about anything is to go back to sports situations and then put it into work situations, because it's my, it's my quickest way to transfer that learning for me. It's like, okay, what would I do on the hockey field? Or what would I've done on the softball, you know, diamond or whatever? And then go, Okay, here's how or here's what I can do now, to take that next level. And it's at the you're not learning, man, you're just I think you're missing out on life. Really. Michael Hingson 14:22 It's not just the learning. It's also putting the knowledge to use. Christine Burns 14:27 Yes, yeah, the implementation of it is is just that that's key to me is that you can have so much knowledge you can you know, I've got a bookcase here, behind me another one upstairs and chock full of books. Now those books don't get it done. Because they're pretty much they've all been written on or got post it notes inside them. And I so often go in and out looking at those and talk to people and ask questions so that I can I can keep implementing it because it's like, well, why have knowledge sitting on a shelf that's pointed Less why? Why just be an information seeker? You know? Michael Hingson 15:04 Yeah. And then hopefully you when you try to share it, find people who are of like mind and and they will absorb. Christine Burns 15:14 Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's like yourself, you know, I mean you you know, you know talking to people and in getting through things yourself and accomplishing a whole lot of things in life, it's, you've got to implement it, you've got to find the people around you that are that are like minded that keep you going as well and in challenging times. And I mean, you know, you're, you're well aware of that. Yeah, Michael Hingson 15:37 yeah. And it isn't necessarily at all just deliberately sharing knowledge, it's being yourself. And then when is when you can share and contribute. That's as good as it gets. And it isn't forcing someone to listen to what you have to say. But rather, it is being like minded and combining knowledges from more than one person, which is always great. Christine Burns 15:59 Yeah, I mean, I love to just sitting down having really, a really solid, always have to be philosophical, but really solid, good, interesting conversations. I'd rather do that than then talk superficial BS and talk about the winner. You know, I love having cool conversations like these. It's it is just brilliant. Yeah. Michael Hingson 16:21 One of the things I think I'm I know, it's not just in this country, but one of the things that that I miss now, especially in later times, is the real art of conversation. I think it's fun to have political debates, for example, to talk about the issues. But so many people now don't want to do that, oh, you can't possibly be right. And they don't open up the opportunity to learn or to explore. And it's not about trying to make anyone change their opinion. For me, the discussions are about learning and understanding more of what what other people's views are. And talking about mine as well, which do we evolve? And, and I would hope that whenever I had, and now, we can't do it as much in the politics world. But when we have discussions, I would hope I learned and I know that over the years, I've changed my views on some things because of conversations that we've had it now we're losing that art of conversation across the board, because of what's going on with politics. And people don't want to think about options, alternatives, or anything else. I'm right, you're wrong. And that's all there is to it. Christine Burns 17:39 Yeah, I was I was laughing because it was, I remember our Christmases, we used to go up Christine Burns 17:46 to family, friends and dad and we used to call it anti knitter. And, and they'd always end up in arguments to do with politics. And it was it was good, though. It wasn't it wasn't like a negative battle. You know, I'm right, you're wrong. It was it was it was an opening of, of, you know, what sort of seemed like an argument, but they had always ended up discussing things really well. And and I think, you know, even today, people do, they're so scared, because it's that thing of going, Oh, what's that person gonna think of me if I say this, or they're not gonna like me, or they won't accept or approve of me? If I say or have this belief, and I just, I struggle with that. Because it's like, like you say, how else do you learn? How else do you have this ability to even be open to other people's ideas? It's just different. It's not right. It's not wrong. It's just different. And I think it's, I think that is one of the things that we are losing these days here. Michael Hingson 18:43 And it isn't even necessarily all that different. If we really communicate like religion. Everybody argues about what religions right or wrong, it seems to me that if you look at the, the major religions in the world saw the same God. Christine Burns 18:57 Exactly, yeah, I remember learning of some of my students, because they had, when I came over here to Australia, I had, it was, you know, for the one to Peter was it was like the League of Nations in my classes. And I was like, Oh my gosh, and so I would just ask them, you know, because I was really curious and interested to find out where these people were from and what their beliefs were, and to find out, and in the end, I was like, hang on a minute. That's pretty much all the same here. There's not a lot of differences. If you start to look at it, some of them were okay with that. And some of them being decided that that wasn't appropriate, but it was the thing, okay. It all comes back down to very similar beliefs. You know, there's, there's not this this big separation that that many people tend to identify. It's quite a narrow focus or a narrow belief really, of where it all comes from. Michael Hingson 19:47 It is indeed and that's what really makes it interesting when people come to that realization. Well, we talked about your Oh, go ahead. Christine Burns 19:59 I was gonna say So it's an interesting thing to have this ability to realize it to notice it to see it, I think it's the intersect, I think is quite cool to to be able to be in an environment where you can actually talk like this and have these conversations is Michael Hingson 20:14 brilliant. Yeah. Well, talking about your positive outlook and so on, or to put it in the parlance of the podcast being unstoppable. What are three things that that you find or that you believe, really helped to create an unstoppable mindset? Christine Burns 20:31 I mean, we've talked about before, I think the first one is to is to learn and learn about self, you know, to really get a self awareness and have this ability to tap insight so that we know, we know who we truly are, it's not this superficial BS or fitting into some box, it's, it's knowing who we truly are. The thing also is to, is to have the ability to, for me, it's kind of weird, because I say to be physically active as well. So I think, to be physically active, kind of helps our our ability to keep moving to keep that momentum going for us, and it helps us change our state. And then it means that, you know, obviously, our mindset flows from there. And I think the third one is to surround yourself with like minded, awesome, amazing people. Michael Hingson 21:22 Yeah, and the, and the and the existing in the in the reality of surrounding yourself with like minded people, doesn't mean that you don't want to have other views like minded people doesn't necessarily mean that they have the same opinions you do. But they have the same philosophies about learning and so on, and they can absolutely have different views. One of my favorite people is the founder of the National Federation of the Blind, Dr. Jacobus tenBroek, who founded the National Federation of the Blind here in the United States in 1940. He and his wife were not of the same political party, they were one Democrat and one Republican. Oh, and I never knew him, he died of cancer before I got to meet him, but I knew his wife well. And one of the things that she said is we had very intense arguments and very intense times where we talked, but we talked, and it was fun, to be challenged by somebody else, who understood that it's all about the challenge and all about the discussion. And we both learn from each other. Christine Burns 22:39 Yeah, I just think it's the, it's where I think the self awareness comes in of going, I'm okay, and secure and myself to have a different opinion. And I'm okay. And I'm safe within myself to be able to say something and to also deal with someone having having a difference of opinion. I yeah, I think the privacy before the art of conversation is, is kind of like a dying breed, unfortunately. But it's, it's something that when people have it, it makes stronger relationships, too. It's it's stronger, create stronger connections and stronger relationships with people. Michael Hingson 23:16 Sure. And I think it's also appropriate to say that I'm okay with myself, to the point where if somebody says something that I find makes more sense than what I believe I'm willing to reevaluate and reassess. There's not an absolute. Christine Burns 23:35 Yeah, I love that. Yep, bingo. Yeah. It's, it's a biggie for, for people to admit that to, you know, for people to admit mistakes, or for people to even not even to go that far, but to be in that space to go. Sure. I didn't think of that. Oh, wow. Yeah, quite well. I'm gonna add that to my toolkit, or I'm gonna step into thinking about that now. Yeah, Michael Hingson 24:00 I thought is huge. There you go. Well, you're originally from New Zealand, but I know you're in Australia. Now. When did you move? Christine Burns 24:08 Um, I moved over here in 2011. So I'd always mum and dad had lived. They've come out from Scotland in New Zealand. They had lived here in Melbourne for three years. Man loved it. Dad hated it. So they went back to New Zealand. And then dad died. 2008 Mum died 2011 Then she died in the June and then it was like, what's left in New Zealand? Yeah, not much. And then I've always wanted to go live in Australia. I might do that. Mum loved it. Why does she love it? I'll go and find out. And so I came over here and my partner actually had shifted over here and it was like, Okay, enough of this long distance relationship. Let's sort this out. And over I came and it was just, it was just amazing to I'd always wanted to, to Go somewhere else and to live somewhere else. And so it was Melbourne, you know, why not? It's gonna do it. Yeah. Michael Hingson 25:07 And you must love it, you're still there. And it's now been about 11 years. Christine Burns 25:12 Originally, it was like, Oh, let's see what it's like for a couple of years. It see what a site for two or three years, and then it sort of expanded to five years. And then yeah, 11 years later, I'm still here. And so we've got our business and things and, and it's, it's, I love the city. I love Melbourne as I really enjoy having the option, I live in a suburb, but I do love going into the CBD and just having the bigness and the, the, it's great. It's a great city, it's all like the big city kind of thing. I still miss New Zealand, you know, like New Zealand has always homeless, you know, always in the heart kind of thing. But a couple of times of going hard work being more than a couple few times of going home, it's like, it's almost like New Zealand seems to get smaller and smaller, and just being the difference. That is it. So people used to talk about busy time, it's like these six cars on the road. It's kind of it's become that kind of, you know, they're adopted into a big city person, but it's I love it. The people are different, you know, like there is a difference and how that goes down. I don't don't mind. Australians are different to New Zealanders. I thought they used to be very similar. They're quite different people. So at times, at times, I struggle sometimes with just the different thoughts or the different approaches to life. It is quite different to kiwis, but the city life is awesome. Love it. And it's it's good for our business being here in a bigger country as well. It's helping us to get our country to get our business going as well. Yeah. Michael Hingson 26:44 Does Australia have as many of the earthquakes that New Zealand experiences? Christine Burns 26:52 No, which is good. But we did have I think it was last year it was last year, we had a 6.6 point something and boy that rocks that. Yeah. Yeah, it was a holy crap. Thank goodness it had it was quite deep, because it would have been quite disastrous otherwise, because Australia is not used to that kind of stuff. You know, we had earthquakes all the time in New Zealand. And one of the places I used to live in APA hat, I was right, the back of the place that I lived in was right on the back of the hill. And that was a fault line. So that was very much shifting and moving. And that was that was okay. And then came here. And it was like yay, no earthquakes. And it was one not long after I arrived. And then there was another big one last year. So that was that was pretty freaky. Making you Michael Hingson 27:42 feel at home. I grew up on the San Andreas Fault. And a couple of weeks ago, I was actually up in the northern part of the state. And I was there for some speaking engagements. And I was sitting at a desk in a hotel room when suddenly I felt the ground start to move and it wasn't too bad. It was only a 5.4. So it was a baby. That's right. Yeah. But by the same token, I noticed it. And it was it was interesting. And I'm going oh, okay, an earthquake. The two, three years ago, we had one. But 100 miles from our home here in Victorville. And if I recall, right, that one was about 6.5, or 6.6. And that afternoon, or actually, the next day, I was traveling to Las Vegas for a convention. And I went in the hotel to a place to eat that night. And the ground started to move. So I immediately called my wife and it moved pretty significantly. So I called my wife. And she said, yeah, it just happened here. And it was like 6.9 on the same fault that we felt the other one from. So I'm very glad that our house is only six years old, and is kind of made to those standards to be able to cope with it. But we did and there wasn't damage in our home. And apparently there wasn't much damage to any of the homes around us. But they do happen in this part of the world. And I always laugh when the people in the eastern part of the country say Well, I wouldn't want to live out there with all the earthquakes. And as I point out to them, you guys are killing off a whole lot more people with hurricanes and tornadoes and explosions of frozen pipes in the winter than we ever do. Michael Hingson 29:34 Oh, you know, what do you do it? Nature is as it is and we go on? Well, I know in your in your life. Have you had much experience or much exposure to any kind of adversity? Because I would think that there have been some things that maybe happened that made you stronger. Just a couple of things. Oh, there you go. Christine Burns 29:58 Well, yeah, I mean, it's I think probably when I was growing up playing sports and stuff, I had injuries and things and, and that was that was okay. And I had one of the biggest ones that I had as I had both my Achilles debrided. So I had scar tissue on both my Achilles and they were really bumpy. And the surgeon said to me, Look, the only way that we're going to be able to sort this out is if we if you have surgery on both at the same time, and I was like, You're kidding me. And she was like, yeah, and then they're both going into plastic to make sure that you can't run around and move. And I was like, okay, because she knew me quite well. And so that was pretty tough. Like that was the surgery went well. And then I was on plaster casts on both legs. So that was full lower league plasters on both, I could put weight on one very slightly. And that was about eight weeks of not being able to do much and that really liked that test of me i that really got inside my head, and I am was definitely not the person I am now of course not. But I didn't even have anywhere near half the skills or abilities that I have now at back then I just like didn't cope well with it. And it tested me. And really, it really pushed me in the sense of working out what I wanted to do who I wanted to be. And the coolest thing was, is that six months later, I was in Canada playing indoor hockey representing New Zealand. So I again, I saw the thing of going through the tough time dealing with it and coping with it. It relatively okay, I wouldn't say I did it well, but I did it. Okay. And then I got myself back on deck. And the other thing more recently, I mean, it's been a few things. But you know, probably the biggest things is in 2016, I had a cancer diagnosis, which came out of the blue, I certainly didn't expect that at all. And so then I had to go through the whole treatment thing for for cancer diagnosis. And BF So then finally, I think was last year yeah, in the what was beginning of December last year, I got the all clear. So got picked out of the of the oncology unit, which was quite nice and kicked off the list. So that was all good and got the all clear. And that. I mean, that prompted me I wrote a book that came out of it as well. But that was that was a scary moment getting that phone call of going, hey, you know, we got the pathology results back and you've got endometrial cancer. And here's the deal. And I stood the if I remember standing in the kitchen of the place where I used to live, and I just stood there and I swore profusely for the first 30 seconds when I was on the phone with the surgeon. And then after that I just was like, right, and I made a decision right then and there. And when you guys do your thing medically, and I'll do my thing mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, and it's, I practice what I preach, basically, and, and came through it pretty well. Yeah, came out the other end pretty well. Michael Hingson 32:59 And that's the real issue, isn't it that you decided to do what you need to do mentally to move on? And yeah, that helped, I would think prepare you for whatever happened medically. Christine Burns 33:11 Yeah, and it did. And it was it was really cool. Because they, you know, I had I had such an awesome team that my radiation oncologist she is I was still in touch with her yesterday, actually. She's She legendary. She's just the most amazing person. The people that I had my surgeons were amazing. Just everybody that I had around me was was just awesome, really cool people, you know, and that was, I mean, a lot of it obviously, is my attitude to them, and, you know, brought the best of myself out every single day it was they said, Look, you know, we want to do chemo, we want to do this, we want to do that. And I said, right, tell me what and why and how. And they will make a decision. And when I spoke with purely their radiation oncologist, she said, here's what we want to do it. Here's the protocol. I was like if we got anything else on offer, and she was like, well, we could do this and just have radiation. And here's what what the plan is because she had just been involved in our research project dealing with that particular protocol. And she said, here's the outcomes that we're getting. And here's the other stuff we've done alongside it. So I said hey, let's let's give that one a go. And so we went for it, and it was it. I committed to showing up every day as my best self and it really it was like they did to even even down to the mean i that the radiation therapists and things like that, that were in the receptionist, everybody, it was just every connection I had was was really awesome. Yeah. Michael Hingson 34:41 Who would you say are role models for you today are people who influenced you and kind of made you who you are. Because you you've got a lot of conviction. You've made a lot of very solid decisions. And although mental makeup is is a wonderful thing, I would think that You've had some people who influenced you to help you shape those positions. Christine Burns 35:05 Yeah. I mean, I'd say, you know, my mom sounds like a superhero, I think she has, I think my mom made a big impact on me the whole way through, and it was even things I fall off my bike, and I'd hear mom from somewhere down the street or somewhere, somehow, even if it was inside my head, going, can't get back up on you go get on with it. And I'd be like, Oh, shit, okay. And it was just that thing to get up and go again. And that really made an impression on me. So I think mom was a massive impact in there. And she, you know, she was she was a five foot half an inch Pocket Rocket, you know, it was like, if she can wear six, six inch heels and run across gravel, then, you know, it's pretty good to see. A she Yeah, she had a massive impact. And my coach as well that I've had for quite a few years now as Linda bellshill, Busan, and she, she lives in Norway. She's a French Canadian, and her her ability to call me on my BS. And, and she just taps in real fast, you know, like I, she's, she's the most amazing, wrong English. But question asker that I have ever come across? She just, yeah, taps inside, and it's like, wow, where the hell did that come from? And, and the challenge and growth that I've got from that experience with her is just amazing. And I think he is. I mean, there's, there's lots of people along the way that definitely the two that I could go background, you know, definitely those two people is, there's lots of people around the place that I've picked up things they've seen, or I've seen stuff. Yeah, I don't know, if I'd be able to specifically name a third, there's, there's many people here that I've seen heard read stuff, that kind of thing. Michael Hingson 36:57 You know, a lot of people, I suspect probably haven't been in some ways for both of us as fortunate as we were in that we had people who challenged us. For me, I agree with you, parents are more important than my, my parents were both very positive. And although not necessarily always, in visible ways, but mentally certainly pushed me. Because they said, you know, no matter what people tell you, you may be blind, you happen to be blind, but you can do whatever you choose to do. And we're gonna give you the opportunities. And I think the only way I could have disappointed them is if I didn't take advantage of the opportunities, because that's what it's really about. And so I hear exactly what you're saying. And there are so many people who say, well, but that's the way it is, you can't really go beyond it. That's just that's just life. And my reaction as I can tell yours already is well, it isn't just that's the way it is isn't. Christine Burns 38:04 Yeah, it's a thing of whatever you want it to be. I mean, and that's one of the things that I see here, those kinds of things that you're gonna have, you know, what do you mean, like, so if you want to, you know, whoever you want to be, friggin be it, that it's like, you can create whatever you want to create. And there's, you know, I often love the things when people say, you know, no one's coming to no one's coming to save you, and in, you know, whatever belief or thought people take out of that, and in a way, I totally believe it's true. It's like, you know, the person that's going to make the difference in this life as us individually, it's, it's, you know, we're the ones who can make our own life worth living, or we can make our life hell and it's our choice to do that. And I just think it's like, whatever you want, get on with it, man, and go and do it. Michael Hingson 38:54 All and the reality is, I think there are a lot of people who come can come along and save you in a lot of different ways. It depends on what you define as safe, because there's a lot of community around all of us if we would take advantage of that, and respected. It amazes me that people who always just go, why, and, you know, my response always to that is, why not 39:22 love it? It's Michael Hingson 39:25 so important, but you know, we, we really need to recognize that. opportunities are limitless if we choose. And you said it earlier. And I think it's a very important part of this. It's all about choice, isn't it? Christine Burns 39:41 Yeah, it is. It's it is always about choice. I mean, I look at the difference between myself and my sister and I mean, she's been on the wrong side of of the law and all these kinds of things and you know, that she's done it. And we grew up in the same same environment, you know, and we chose There's different pathways. I've got friends that I grew up with, and they've chose different ways of living chose, you know, they've chosen different pathways for them, their families, or whatever it is. And it's, we always have a choice. I think, you know, so many people wouldn't even our clients go, No, you don't, you know, sometimes we don't have a choice, right? Well, you actually do, it's always a choice, even though there's always that choice not to choose. So it's, it's still a choice. Yeah. Michael Hingson 40:30 One of, for me, the most significant examples of that, of course, is the World Trade Center and being in the World Trade Center on September 11. And escaping. And, you know, people said, Well, you didn't have a choice, you were there, you're just lucky you got out. And the response is, no, there are a lot of choices. And the fact is, I could have chosen different jobs and not been in the World Trade Center. But I chose the life path that I had. And I was in the World Trade Center. And I correct, I didn't have any choice about the terrorists attacking the buildings. And I didn't have any choice about what happened directly to the buildings, there is I can tell. But even though I couldn't control so many things, if nothing else, I can control my own mindset. And so I am a firm believer in Don't worry about the things that you can't control, focus on the things that you really can't control, and the rest will take care of itself. And the one thing we always have control over, no matter how bad circumstances become, we always have control over our mind and how we mentally deal with things, which is what you talked about with cancer. Christine Burns 41:44 Yeah, yeah, it is. I mean, and that's one of the things there that I always say is, you know, control the controllables. And, and exactly like you say, it's we've got control over our mindset, we can, we can choose how we show up, we can choose what our thoughts are going to be, we can choose our response, our reaction to things and it's, I think that's, that's, that's one of the key things is it makes the difference between the people that and carry on and can get through adversity or can get through even the most exciting and amazing times as well is to go and you know, what I choose to savor this moment I choose to, I choose to be present, and I choose to enjoy this moment, instead of running off worrying about what maybe kind of would, you know, could have happened. It's we choose to be in those moments. And it is it's, you know, control the controllables, which is for me, I always say it's your top six inches kind of thing. It's like you control your thoughts, which makes a massive difference. Michael Hingson 42:41 Well, you know, we may, for example, rent a home, and the landlord comes, says you got to be out by the end of the month, don't have any control over that, right. But we do have control over how we deal with it. And it's may be very frustrating. There may be so many things that happen. But by the same token, it's still a question of how we deal with it. My wife passed away this past Saturday, I didn't have any control over that. But I realized all the more and more since that happened, how much I have control over how I choose to deal with it. And I know, after almost 40 years of marriage, what it what it means to love someone that deeply and she's always going to be missed by me. And I will deliberately make sure that she's always missed by me. But still, it's time to move forward, in in whatever way is possible to move because I didn't have control over what happened to her directly. But I know what I can do. Christine Burns 43:45 Yeah, yeah. And like you say, it's the choice. And it's, I mean, the coolest thing that I remember talking about with my coach Flinders, you know, it's this thing of like, we feel grief, or we feel sadness, because we'd love so much. And I think that when you're when you're talking, it was like it to feel the feels, you know that that's what helps to make us human, that's what helps to allow us to grow and develop as when we feel all the fields and in to be self aware and choose to allow ourselves to do that. Because that that's what I mean, that's, that's what makes us well helps to have us being you know, such a well evolved being kind of thing and when we can feel the feels and talk about things and, you know, share that and talk about it. I think it's that's what allows us to be able to move forward as well. Because if we try and hold on to stuff and shove it down and and deny it or, you know, say that, you know, no, no, no, it's all okay. It's all okay, which is BS. When we share that that true feeling of who we are. That's That's what I think it really allows us to keep moving forward. Michael Hingson 44:50 Well, you went to school, went to college. Christine Burns 44:54 Yes, I did. Yep. Michael Hingson 44:56 Yeah. And then what did you do? So I went to Christine Burns 44:59 school. So I went to university. And then I Michael Hingson 45:05 did you get a degree in? Both Christine Burns 45:07 did psychology and I am laughing because I did psychology because I thought it would be easy. And that way I could still get my student allowance and I can keep playing hockey and I was like, Yeah, that was just what it was. And so I went there, and I ended up staying at University for about six years. So I did, I did psychology, and then I got a scholarship to go to another university still within Palmerston North, in New Zealand, and, and do exercise science. And then from there, I carried on doing sports psychology as well. And so I just sort of stayed at university because it allowed me to have money and play hockey, which was great. And I never thought anything of it, because I was like, I don't want to be a psychologist, I don't want to I remember talking to one of the girls in our team and the hockey team. And she was a psychologist, and she was like, ah, burnsy Because it was when that can get busy. I don't think you know, being a clinical psychologist is really for you. So she told me about some of the stuff she was doing. And I was like, yeah, now that's not made me I'm not doing it. And then I wish I went in got a job at one of the gyms in Palmerston North side. So I used my exercise science degree with that one. And then, because I was still playing so much hockey, I was playing for Wellington, which was a different province. So I was traveling two hours, you know, like four or five times a week, and it was just crazy. And they said, like, you know, burnsy Why don't you just get a job down here and shift and I was like, I here's a good idea as you're traveling, let's let's do that. Lift and Wellington got a job. They're teaching and Exercise Science. And then I'm already doing it, then I became program manager of the program. And yeah, it was just me. And so we incorporated positive psychology with exercise science. And it was just Yes, that's kind of evolved. Really? Michael Hingson 47:00 Yeah. playing hockey all the time. Christine Burns 47:04 Yes. And so I would often miss the beginning of the year with the students because I'd be away overseas for indoor hockey. So you know, when students would arrive, they'd do all the normal, you know, early stuff and getting to know everybody. And I totally would always miss that because I'd be away somewhere. And then I'd come back and then you know, go for it. But it kind of made it easier. Because I could say, you know where I've been and what I've been doing and Exercise Science students thought that was pretty awesome. So it kind of kind of made it easy to get back on track with being really clear. Michael Hingson 47:36 So you were doing hockey sort of professionally, while you were doing other things as well. Christine Burns 47:42 Well, I saw I was doing it nearly full time. It wasn't professionally because we didn't get paid for it back. Michael Hingson 47:48 So you paid hockey team. No, Christine Burns 47:51 I mean, we even the The tough thing was sometimes we would even pay it. I mean we'd pay for our flights, accommodation. A lot of the times we weren't even paying out for the shirt that we were playing. You know, New Zealand hockey would pay for some of our staff at subsidized bits and pieces, but definitely got nothing anywhere near the funding that people get nowadays. We were Yeah, that I mean, so we were raising money making pizzas and all sorts of stuff to be able to travel. Michael Hingson 48:23 So were there professional hockey teams, or were you kind of what would be today a professional hockey team and player. Christine Burns 48:31 I would probably the relative now would probably be be a professional player. Yeah. For who we were and what we were doing back then. Yeah, yeah. Michael Hingson 48:39 Cool. Well, you obviously enjoyed it and had a lot of fun with it, and so on. And what caused you finally to stop doing it? Or have you really stopped playing hockey? Christine Burns 48:51 Yeah, I have stopped. I was actually I was playing an outdoor game, actually one of the times back home and in Wellington, and I don't know, it was just weird. And it was an outdoor game. And I was hitting in to the turf to play and I was like, this might be my last game. And I was like, what Where did that come from? So we the royal we in my head had the conversation of like, oh my gosh, what where that come from? And I was like, I need to keep doing this. This is crazy. And I drove into. So it takes about 45 minutes to get to the turf and Wellington from where I was. And I drove in. We won our game. I never touched the ball because I played in goal and I never touched the ball at all that game and I was bored. And I came off the turf. I took my gear off and I zipped up my bag and I went that's it no more. I'm not playing outdoor. I'm not playing indoor and I was like, Whoa, that's pretty freaky. Because it was it was my whole identity of who I was. That was you know, that was that was the abre thing. And then came over here to Australia and I when I was teaching Monash University, I spoke to someone there and they were like oh I could come and coach him colleagues and I was like, Yeah, okay, that's easy. So I did that I did some coaching over here for a while but yeah, didn't didn't carry on playing and I, I kind of miss it but I also done it. Yeah. Michael Hingson 50:13 Kind of one of those kind of do kind of don't bittersweet things. Christine Burns 50:17 It's I love that I miss the bar kind of whatever word that is, you know the the aggression the competition the the challenge of it by I miss that. But I don't miss the the continual practices and trainings and sacrifice. I mean, I played I think there was a span of about I mean, I played longer than I only played 13 years because I only started playing hockey and my last year of school, but I I played a span of 10 years where I just went indoor outdoor hockey the whole time, and I didn't actually take to be honest, I didn't take time off. I was training and playing across those 10 years of just going indoor outdoor the full time and it was that I don't miss Yeah, that was that was the stuff I'm I'm okay to let that go. Michael Hingson 51:10 So it sounds like it was time now. Was your partner a hockey player? Christine Burns 51:14 Um, no, no, she was a musician and did a lot of singing as well. And but she wasn't really a sports person. But she's, yeah, she she enjoys workouts, and she enjoys doing things like that. But yeah, is definitely more of the musician and the singer kind of thing. Yeah, yeah. Michael Hingson 51:31 So did she play at the Games? Christine Burns 51:34 Um, no, no. Michael Hingson 51:39 Just checking. But still, that's that's cool that that Yeah. You. You you had a relationship. So was was your Was she an influence in any way of you deciding not to play hockey? So you could spend more time together? I mean, that Christine Burns 52:00 night? Yeah, totally. You just decide. Yeah, yeah, I just decided it was. It was weird. And I got, I must admit, I did get a fright because it was like the thought just was just random. Because I couldn't even think of you know exactly where I was standing. When I had that that thought it was it kind of shocked me that I was like, Oh my gosh, I never saw. I never saw that time ending. Like I never, I never thought I didn't even think about it, to be honest, of not being a hockey player. You know, which, even sharing the fear as their identity was quite strong as I just never saw myself as not doing it. Yeah. Michael Hingson 52:38 Sounds like God came along and said, Okay, other things to do now. Yeah, Christine Burns 52:43 I certainly got the right royal invisible kick in the pants. And we Whoa, that's that one God, like Shoosh Okay, cool. Now what? You survived? I did. And that's what I think is fun thing. It's like, you know, all these things happen. And I mean, you know, that yourself. It's like, we experience all these different things. And it's like, well, we're still here. We made it through so we survived that one too. So that's okay. Next, you know, it's yeah, there's always always new things to learn always new things to step into. Michael Hingson 53:13 Well, being a hockey player and active athlete and doing all of that for so many years, must have taught you things that you put into your life lessons today, what what probably is the most important or are the most important things that you learned that you took away from all of that Christine Burns 53:31 the first thing that pops in my head is never give up. And and for me, it was that thing of, you know, just, yeah, just to keep going. It's like tweaking change, keep going tweaking change, keep going, you know, it's it's, it's that there's, you can always make a difference, you can always make an impact and if you keep going with it and and tweak and change and learn on the way through your you'll get across you'll you'll get through it, there's literally there is always a way in that sense here. Michael Hingson 54:01 Well, you What do you do today? You've you've obviously moved on from hockey and you're surviving, you went to Australia? What do you do today? Christine Burns 54:10 Um, today, I am co founder and CEO of Walt Institute. So we've got our own business, which is woman Authentic Leadership Training Institute. And so we work with women in STEM, so science, technology, engineering, math and medicine. And we we do a lot of authentic leadership training with them. So our whole focus is on the person and their own leadership of themselves first. So it's not your traditional leadership. It's that kind of thing is to empower people so they can have more confidence, more self awareness, self regulation, and jump into that whole thing of being the best version of themselves every single day. So it's fun. I love it. It's yeah, it's not a job. It's, it's just what I do each day. Michael Hingson 54:56 Which which is always something that makes it a lot of fun. Isn't it? Christine Burns 55:00 Ah, it is. And it's, I mean, you know, even for now it's sight to be able to get up by 730 is not that early in the morning, but it's, you know, to get up and be on here with you at 7:30am, we had training that we took the other night with our inner circle, and that didn't finish till 7pm At night, and just, it doesn't matter. You know, it's these kinds of things as I don't care about the hours of those things, because I just love I love what I do so much. Michael Hingson 55:30 So what is your mission in life? What is it you want to accomplish? Christine Burns 55:33 By saying, I mean, the thing that I want to do is, which sounds a bit weird, but I want people to be able to experience no feel enjoy all those kind of things that that I've not specific, not the exact same things that I've experienced, but to experience that kind of level of, of fun and excitement and enjoyment in their own lives. And more. Just so that people can, can, you know, be present and enjoy life and have a good time doing it? Now. Michael Hingson 56:03 So you as a as a person who gets up in the morning, mostly, I would think get up and you're positive, you move on. I guess my question is, how do you set yourself up each day to do that and to thrive and go forward? Christine Burns 56:20 I smile is the first thing I do when I wake up is I smile every single morning. And when I first started doing it when I was going through treatment, and and it's just become an automatic thing. So as soon as I start waking up, and I realized that I'll start you know, put a big smile on my dial. Sometimes I can feel that that rush of all the happy chemicals flowed through me. Sometimes I don't, but I still smile anyway. And then I always ask myself of who I choose to be today. And that's, you know, who do I choose to be and that can be anything from curious, excited to, you know, to be focused and energized or whatever it is, whatever that stuff is that pops into my into my head and then each each day or five out of seven days, I will get up, do meditation go into a workout or exercise of some sort. And then more often than not, I'll have a green smoothie and then carry on my merry way. Yeah. Michael Hingson 57:16 When I get up in the morning, I have a cat who now homeless smashes right up next to me. And the dog is on the floor and the cat is right up against me probably trying to stay warm in part but when I say it's time to get up, she's up. And the first thing and it's so funny that I have to do is to go over and pet her while she eats breakfast. She will not eat unless I am petting her and giving her back rubs. What a crazy thing but if that doesn't start your day off in a fun way I don't know what does. Christine Burns 57:52 That was gorgeous to barely warm fuzzies and give you everything you need to kick off the day. That's brilliant. I love it. Michael Hingson 57:59 And the dog sits there and watches and Alamo the guide dog goes down well if you gotta but I always come back and talk to Christine Burns 58:07 you about Miko. You got to pet me as well. Michael Hingson 58:12 Yeah, exactly right. And he just suffers in silence until he gets petted to but stitch stitch the cat insists. And during the day when she decides she's hungry, she yells until I come in and pet her vocal about it. It's so funny. Christine Burns 58:30 Because it was a waste to have a Siamese cat when I was that with few that our first time is cat that I can remember we used to call it a minute or her name was midfield. Mandy, she had a big long family history. And she used to sit on the bench with mum. So when Mum was doing the veggies and things that care and mum would sit there and have a conversation and a cat would have all these different ranges of sheep now and all these different ways and, and mum and the cat will have this conversation. And I just love it. I think it was brilliant. It was Michael Hingson 59:00 so much fun. Tell us about your book. Christine Burns 59:03 So my book, it's called igniting resilience, overcoming the desperate despair or receiving a death sentence. And I I started writing it just in the sense of just minimize it by just in the beginning was this thing of like, I want people to kind of know that there's a different way that you could approach these kinds of things. And then it kind of turned into this whole thing of practicing what I preach. It's a yes, there's my story of going through the whole cancer journey. But what I've done is made it so that there's a lot of strategies and there's basically everything that we teach, that's what I practiced and there's a whole lot of those strategies within the book as well. And it's there's a lot of learnings and things that I took through so it's not just the which sounds really bad but while our why story of it all. It's it's a teaching memoir is what Xander vs that's it's pretty Yeah, it's pretty cool. I think it's pretty cool. Yeah. Michael Hingson 1:00:04 Did you have people who tried to bring you down naysayers who said, Oh, none of the strategies makes any sense or is any good? Christine Burns 1:00:13 Yeah, I had a lot of people like, Oh, why are you writing about that? No must know about that. I was like, oh, okay, thanks. For you know, people were like, those strategies just can't be like that all the time. That's just dumb, you know, and it was like, you can. And so I was like, the every now and again, little bits of it didn't get in when they when they kind of said, Oh, that just doesn't work. And there's just no way that's going to work for me. I was like, hang on a minute. That's the choice to choose that arco. That's why that's where they're at. Because I was practicing what I teach. And I was seeing other people who were doing different parts similar to that. And it was working for them, their their journeys, even getting through any type of adversity was different, because they were implementing the strategy. So I was like, You know what, you can take your BS, you can take your poor, what was me, you know, little comments and take them wherever you like. Michael Hingson 1:01:07 Or why don't you try it and just see how well it works for you. And then let's talk Christine Burns 1:01:12 exactly, yes, they were the odd ones of those. And some people were like, Ah, I okay. Yeah, yeah. Well, what are some of that works? I'm not so so tell me about that. But yeah, then there was many others that were like not nesters booklet. And I was like, okay, cool. So Michael Hingson 1:01:29 yeah, so many people just say, well, this won't work. This can't work. And it's like, people, people, so many people fear the whole concept of blindness. And what's amazing is how many people say they're experts on blindness, although they've never tried it. Yeah, exactly. This. Christine Burns 1:01:50 You experienced it. Let's just calm down. Yeah, yeah. Michael Hingson 1:01:
Listen to Future Now Show 3.07.2023 Is there really any way of predicting Earthquakes? We’ve recently become aware of Stefan Burns, who has worked as a geologist/geophysicist in NorCal. He has been paying attention to shifts in the readings of earth magnetometers, especially in the low frequency realms, such as 0-50 Hz. He has been noticing power increases in the Schuman resonances, and that these increases may be correlated with pre-earthquake activity. This is especially of interest to us, as one of the closest earth magnetomenters to us shgowing increased activity is located in our home town of Boulder Creek, at the Heart Math Institute, and less than 20 miles from the infamous San Andreas Fault! Our interview is with New Age Drinks founder Sierra Hooshiari, a survivor of a serious brain concussion that had put her in a coma for days. In her years long recovery from this trauma, she explored what brain chemicals were essential to her health, and formulated a soft drink incorporating much of what she learned. We think you’ll enjoy hearing her story.. For more info, goto TikTok@BrainpopRelax and Instagram @brainpopdrink @drinkbrainpop. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday last week is likely to be one of the deadliest this decade, seismologists said, with a more than 100km rupture between the Anatolian and Arabian plates. 地震學家表示,上週一襲擊土耳其和敘利亞的7.8級地震,可能是十年來傷亡最慘重的地震之一,安納托利亞和阿拉伯板塊之間斷裂了超過100公里。 Here is what scientists said happened beneath the Earth's surface and what to expect in the aftermath: 以下是科學家所描述地表下所發生的事,以及預期後果: WHERE DID THE EARTHQUAKE ORIGINATE? 震源位於何處? The East Anatolian Fault is a strike-slip fault. 東安納托利亞斷層屬於橫移斷層 In those, solid rock plates are pushing up against each other across a vertical fault line, building stress until one finally slips in a horizontal motion, releasing a tremendous amount of strain that can trigger an earthquake. 在橫移斷層中,堅硬的岩石板塊在垂直斷層線上相互推擠,不斷增加壓力,最後造成一塊岩石板塊水平滑動,釋放出可引發地震的巨大壓力。 The San Andreas Fault in California is perhaps the world's most famous strike-slip fault, with scientists warning that a catastrophic quake is long overdue. 加州的聖安德列斯斷層或許是最著名的橫移斷層,科學家警告說,一場災難性的地震早該發生了。 The initial rupture for the Turkey-Syria earthquake kicked off at a relatively shallow depth. “The shaking at the ground surface will have been more severe than for a deeper earthquake of the same magnitude at source,” David Rothery, a planetary geoscientist at the Open University in Britain, said. 土耳其—敘利亞地震的斷裂是從深度較淺的地方開始。英國空中大學的行星地質學家大衛.羅瑟里表示:「相同的震級,若發生在地表,其震度將比震源更深的地震更加嚴重」。Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2023/02/14/2003794282 Powered by Firstory Hosting

The San Andreas Fault was described as “locked, loaded, and ready to roll” in 2016. Many people thought, when they heard this, that the big earthquake was imminent. In this episode, considering geologic time, Dr. Jones explains what this really means.

Welcome to this 130th episode of our podcast. Here's a lively conversation between two geoscientists—testifying to the opportunities for Society of Catholic Scientists (SCS) members to enjoy discussions which are at once elevated by their personal values and grounded in their diverse, expert explorations of God's creation. Paul spoke with Natasha Toghramadjian, a Ph.D. student in geophysics—and seismology in particular—at Harvard University. She performs wide-ranging research on earthquake dynamics and risks in California and around the world. She spent a year in Armenia on a US Fulbright research grant to design a study on future earthquakes there and the connection between risk preparedness and regional politics. Toghramadjian, a student member of the SCS, was a speaker at the 2021 national conference in Washington, DC. See the video of her talk here, at about the 7-hour, 19-minute mark. The talk was titled, “Earthquakes, their Consequences, and the Jesuit Pioneers of Seismology.” This podcast conversation included Toghramadjian's mentions of the earthquake hazards in Oklahoma and the Newport-Inglewood Fault in California, considered more dangerous than the San Andreas Fault for the Los Angeles region. A note from Natasha: at one point just before the 16 minute mark, she said "40 meters" when she meant "40 miles onshore." She discussed with Paul the common but wrong view that we hold Christian beliefs despite natural evidence. Scientists use natural evidence, including the enduring laws of physics, chemistry, and biology, in their attempts to understand God's creation more fully. The two agreed that science and religion are in harmony as paths for pursuing the truth amid great mystery. A “keeper” quote from Toghramadjian: “Every human you encounter is an imperfect representation of whatever they say they stand for. . . . It's very easy to point to a bad example, a person, rather than point to the source material that we're all trying to follow but we all inevitably fall short of because we're fallen.” Show notes prepared by TSSM co-host Bill Schmitt
Wow. Here we are. The first episode of At Your Own Risk. To start out this wacky endeavor, we learn more about cohost Dana and her bizarre rise to internet semi-fame after lots of bumps in the road. Sarah gets to the bottom of Dana's career fails and successes, all-consuming imposter syndrome, and how grappling with the projections of surprisingly demanding instagram users is eating away at her sanity.Once Dana is done reliving the trauma of her 20s, she wakes up from her anxiety-induced coma and turns the tables on Sarah. We learn that while the internet may seem like the end of humanity, the San Andreas fault and an overdue earthquake catastrophe will for sure be the end of Southern California. Together the duo quickly realize moving to Los Angeles might have been a huge mistake, but they'll just laugh and drink about it for now. Care to join?As always, we want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Prinze George over Zoom video! EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE OF “OFF MY ASS” ON BRINGING IT BACKWARDS PODCAST Alt-pop group Prinze George premiered their new track, “Off My Ass” on American Songwriter’s Bringing It Backwards podcast! “Off My Ass” is the interpersonal journey of vocalist Naomi Almiquist, navigating her life amidst sudden loss, moving to Los Angeles, and the unfulfilled lows of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the words of a friend and an art installation about the San Andreas Fault, “find balance during unstable periods, turn fears into meditations, and remember the earth shouldn’t move you; you should move with it” - Naomi was fueled with inspiration to pen her personal struggles in song. Inspired by their hometown roots of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Prinze George is an American Alternative Pop band formed by life-long partners Kenny Grimm (Producer) and Naomi Almquist (Vocalist) in 2013. Soon after, the two recruited then-student Isabelle De Leon (Drummer) while at college. Influenced by a wide array of genres - from folk to electronica to R&B - Prinze George’s music takes the listener on an emotional, introspective journey. With strong harmonics rooted in live instrumentation, danceable grooves in the outer layer of their discography, and themes of love, friendship, loss and perseverance - Prinze George is emerging and transcending across radars, giving a fresh perspective to the pop genre lyrically and sonically. Following the release of their self-titled EP Prinze George, the band went on tour with Albert Hammond Jr as direct support in 2015. Bolstering their growing reputation, they dropped their debut album, Illiterate Synth Pop, in 2016 and joined Lewis Del Mar on his North American Tour. After impressing fans at festivals like Austin City Limits, Eaux Claires, and Firefly with their nostalgic, synth-soaked sound, innovative and distinctive lyrics, and mesmerizing, gripping performances, the band released their last EP, Airborne in 2018. Around the same time, Naomi and Kenny were given the opportunity to write songs for actor/director Til Schweiger’s film “Head Full of Honey” in Europe. They continued to expand their loyal following and break genre barriers thanks to a string of collaborations in 2019 with some of the industry’s top artists like Carnage, Diplo, G-Eazy & Wiz Khalifa (“Slot Machine,” “Letting People Go” & “Wait For Me”). Their latest EP effort, Happy Garden, dropped March 26th of this year, featuring singles “Garden in the Sky,” “Taller,” and “Centuries.” We want to hear from you! Everybody is absolutely flipping out about the still completely unknown implications of the various digital measurement storm clouds gathering on the horizon...but not Nicole Parlapiano, VP of Advertising at Tinder. Nicole, known for her mild temperament, reserved mannerisms, and lengthy calm spells, has a message for all the marketers caught in an endless information spin-cycle about Apple iOS14 and Google FLOCS and whatever else is inducing unnecessary panic. That message, dearest gentle-minded and tender-souled listeners, is: Take a deep breath and get back to basics. It's not going to be easy, but it's fairly simple-everyone is going to have to pick back up some tried-and-true marketing ideas that never actually stopped working, and blend them with what few modern machines might keep running okay as we enter the Age of Digital Privacy. She's also fairly certain this will all be good, because being more thoughtful about consumer privacy will be positive for brands. Additionally, if psychology-driven customer centric thinking were to make a much needed and long overdue return to every element of advertising, it just might work wonders. We've created all this complexity for ourselves, honestly, and now it's also on us to explain that to senior executives and other people who haven't been as close to the Constantly Escalating Complication Cook-Off that's been happening in the advertising kitchen for over a decade. There's also some very interesting information to be had on how people ACTUALLY dated during the pandemic, and what this may say about how all of our behavior will and/or won't be different forever after the Quarantine Era. A look at how our frenemies the Zoomers are doing is also part and parcel of all this. We also examine the strange ethical and moral positions major digital platforms end up taking on certain issues, such as dating, sexuality, pornography, cannabis, etc. You know, all the good stuff. The Too Big To Fail set of digital ad platforms certainly seem to have some strong opinions if you look at the real policies that actually impact advertising on their platforms, including for products that most people might consider completely innocuous at this point, such as dating apps for the general public. These restricted categories contain things that might be a little less dangerous than, say, oh, I don't know...(checks notes on the last few years) lots of what is at the very core of these large digital advertising platforms' own businesses? Lee gets swiped left on by Tinder, the whole app itself, via a verbal warning from Nicole to stay off the platform, issued due to his ownership of an Android phone. Truly, no demographic is more wretched in the eyes of marketers than those who live in The Green Bubble. David bets his salary that Facebook and Instagram have wrecked more happy homes than any dating app. Ryan realized she may or may not still be in dozens of "It's Complicated" relationships on Facebook with high school and college friends, suggesting the existence of a Polycule so large and strange and powerful that it's theoretically a greater threat to all of California than the San Andreas Fault.
In part 2 of our 4 part series on earthquake prediction, Dr. Jones explains the idea of how the rate of earthquakes can be the piece of information that helps know if another earthquake is more likely. She explains why people think she can predict earthquakes, when really, she's just explaining the science of what makes an earthquake more likely (hint: earthquakes never happen by themselves!). She helps explain why the San Andreas Fault is different and can be seen as more likely than other earthquakes and when a one day rate might go up around it, where people might think a prediction is being made when triggering is involved. We also reveal the things you should listen for when scientists talk about what's potentially going to happen next.

Speaker 1:Welcome to the vipHome Podcast, where we talk about all the things homeowners need to know.Caroline Brenneis:Today, we are speaking with two insurance experts from different parts of the country. We have Michelle O'Connor from Michelle O'Connor Insurance in Charlotte, North Carolina. And Jeff Arnold from RightSure based in Arizona. So, welcome both. And thank you so much for joining us today.Jeff Arnold:Thank you. Happy to be here, and a pleasure to meet Michelle on camera, in-person.Michelle O'Connor:Thank you so much for having me. I look forward to our discussion today.Caroline Brenneis:Michelle, why don't you kick us off a little bit? Tell us a little about you and your company. And then, Jeff, when she wraps up, share a little bit about RightSure.Michelle O'Connor:Sure. So, I have been in the insurance business for a long time. I started off as a district sales manager with Erie Insurance Group. And was lucky enough to get transferred to beautiful North Carolina, where I was able to expand their footprint by putting independent agents on in North Carolina. In 2000, my husband and I started O'Connor Insurance together. So, we've been in business for 20 years in January.Paul Chadowski:Congratulations. And just for that, Michelle and I, we met. We would serve on ... Because I was the former agency owner, and we had task forces at Erie Insurance. And Michelle was the chair of the IT task force when I was chair of the personal lines task force. And that's where we just got to meet initially. And what an outreach. That's why it's just great to connect after all these years. Because it has been probably at least 10 years since we have connected. So, we're very welcome to have you.Michelle O'Connor:Very true. Thanks Paul. And it's a pleasure to reconnect with you as well.Paul Chadowski:And as I get to Jeff, Jeff and I have been able to chat a little bit earlier. And I don't want to take away some of your thunder, but I just love that you describe yourself as a human, a dad, a author, and a thinker. And I also wanted to pass on congratulations to your agency, RightSure, which is listed from the Insurance Business to America, 2020 Top Insurance Workplace. So, congratulations to that, Jeff. I didn't want to take away some of your thunder, but I did want to put that out. And just the quality of agencies that we have here with both Michelle and Jeff. So, with that, Jeff, please take over the introduction of [inaudible 00:02:21].Jeff Arnold:Yeah, thanks, Paul. First of all, glad you brought that up, but the credit isn't here. There are five senior people at RightSure that deserve all the credit, right? So, they're the ones doing all the hard work behind the scenes to get us lifted to that point. But indeed it was an honor, right? It's a great accolade to have to be able to hang on our wall Insurance Industry Workplace of the Year. So, happy and excited. Like Michelle, I've been in this industry for a little bit, 31 years. I know I don't look that old, it's okay.Jeff Arnold:Every day is fun, right? I wish this industry on everyone because it truly is a place to make any dreams come true. Not just lip service. It's been wonderful for my family and fed everything that I need as a person, just wonderful. Agency is rideshare. We're four different entities in one. We're part tech because everyone wants to be an Insurtech tech space. We have our own proprietary technology in play. And then we're part aggregator. We acquire a lot of firms over the years, about 16 different firms over the years. Part independent agent place where people just hang their shingle with us, and then part a mom and pop. Old-fashioned, mainstream, retail location. So, that's the summary of what RightSure is, but happy to be on the show.Paul Chadowski:Right. And Jeff, what is your outreach? Can you tell me how many states you're in, where you do Right?Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Thanks for asking. We conduct business in 42 states, but we generate decent or significant revenue in 16, mostly the Southwest, where I live in Arizona, and then the middle America as they call it.Paul Chadowski:Great. Okay. Thank you so much for those introductions. And it only confirms why we have the quality of agents on here. So, thank you. We'd like to start off this podcast kicking off what we call homeowner horror stories. And these are stories about things that could go wrong in the home that you just wouldn't believe. And do either of you, I'd like to start with maybe Michelle, do you have some horror stories that you can share with us?Michelle O'Connor:I do. So, I shared this one with Carol before. So, I'll actually share two short ones with you all. But we had a homeowner who had a toilet overflow that was above a finished basement. And so, the water was running down into the finished basement, and the ceiling fan was going. So, it literally hit the fan and went all over the finished basement. It was a nightmare of a claim. A lot of cleanup for our poor homeowners. It was ugly. It was very ugly stuff. And then we've also had some scary ones as well. We had a fish tank that was on a surge catch on fire. The surge strip actually caught on fire.Michelle O'Connor:And luckily, someone was home at the time, but the fire was going up the family room wall when they caught it, and were able to put it out. So, luckily, the damage was contained to that room, but those surge protectors can be troublesome as well as protecting us sometimes. So, it was a good reminder to make sure that they don't get wet, and that they are new as well.Caroline Brenneis:Michelle hearing that first story for the second time, I cringe just as much. That is still such a crazy story.Michelle O'Connor:It was definitely an ugly claim. There's no doubt about it. I felt so sorry for those folks.Caroline Brenneis:I could really only imagine. What about you, Jeff?Jeff Arnold:Oh yeah, similar horror stories of that. Michelle and I can trade stories for quite some time. Two that come to mind really quick is one that you'll just shake your head out and wonder why. But so one of our policyholders is part of our private client division, so, it's a large home, decided to eradicate all the desert behind his house, about three by 10 foot swath, right? Because it was really just attracting rattlesnakes, and pack rats, and all kinds of nefarious animals. Right? So, as he was replanting his yard, he had [inaudible 00:06:10] back hole, a pretty good space outside the back of his yard. I think it was under 10 foot on the other side. Turns out unbeknownst to him that these were special cactus, special dead cactus that he was removing, right?Jeff Arnold:And the person who owned the property, which wasn't him sued our homeowner, our policy owner ... This is the kicker ... $70,000 worth of special dead cactus, and rattlesnakes, and what have you. And so, luckily, company paid for it, paid for the defense cost, and paid for it too. And part of the settlement was he had agreed that after replanting it all, irrigate it off for two to three years or something too at his own expense. So, just a claims horror story, right? Stop at your property line. Don't try to help your neighbor out by clearing out dead cactus. It's not worth it.Paul Chadowski:Did he have to replace the rattlesnakes too?Jeff Arnold:[inaudible 00:07:00] on their own. I'm sure. But yeah, just crazy. And then, another one similar to Michelle's, water. Claims follow water. That's just proof. But this one was just the homeowner lived above a homeowner [inaudible 00:07:15] them on a hill. And their irrigation system had been dripping for some time unbeknownst to them. And the neighbor below put in a brand new concrete driveway while this was dripping. And it just destroyed the concrete driveway overnight. Because it was more than a drip, I guess, it was a pretty good water stream. Policy owner didn't know about it until he was served in a lawsuit.Jeff Arnold:It literally took them a month to file the claim and serve him to replace it. But the neighbor didn't even come up to tell him, right? He waited four and a half weeks later to serve him, to sue them. So, yeah, just all kinds of horror stories. Buyer beware, caveat emptor, right? Know what's in your home insurance policy, what's covered. So ...Paul Chadowski:And you bring up a good point that I think a lot of homeowners don't know. They think of property, and theft and fire, and vandalism. They don't understand that there's things called legal costs that are involved and covered in the home policy. We don't always talk about that, but I knew when I was an agent, sometimes we have to spend money legally just to pay nothing because it may not have been that person's fault, but there was that. So, it's interesting that both your stories, and you bring that up. But I think that's a really good point for homeowners to have a takeaway that they don't realize that not only do they have legal fees, but they have attorneys for them. They don't have to search them out.Jeff Arnold:Sure. Good point.Caroline Brenneis:Well, both very horrific horror stories I have to say. So, thank you so much for sharing. Let's dive a little bit into the nitty gritty of insurance. Can you both share ... I guess, we'll keep going with Michelle first and then Jeff, but can you both share a little bit about the catastrophic claims that you see in each of your regions, like wildfires, or flooding, or, specifically ... I know Jeff you're sparing a large space, and Michelle, I know you're a little bit closer to North Carolina. But I think having you both on and seeing more specific to your region would be so helpful for listeners.Michelle O'Connor:Sure, absolutely. So, we live in an interesting place where there's a hurricane that threatens us just about every other week in North Carolina. Typically, it's just our coastal areas, but we're a little bit inland. But inland, we also have a lot of flooding risks. So, unbeknownst to a lot of our policy holders, flood, even if they're not in a flood plain is a big risk for them. But of course, the wind and the hail are probably some of our biggest claims, especially, in the spring. And then, in the fall, when we get into hurricane season. Rarely enough, we actually had an earthquake on August 9th in North Carolina. It was above five on the Richter scale. I was camping in far Western North Carolina and did not feel it, but my husband said he did. So, I guess, I wasn't in the right spot to feel it that day. But so that's interesting. We've not really had that as a threat to our area. And so, it's definitely something we're having conversations with our clients about now.Paul Chadowski:I'm sorry, are you on a fault line, Michelle? Or is that earthquake, is there any explanation for it, or can you give us a little more the detail? Because we all think about it. And we get to Jeff, about the West and the Californias.Michelle O'Connor:So, my understanding is we are not on a fault line. I tried to do some research on it, and to go back into history. And really there have been only, I believe, like 20-ish since the 1700s in North Carolina. So, it is still very unusual for it to have happened. And I believe that it was a specific ... And I don't know enough about earthquakes to give you all the details, but there was a specific reason this one happened that was unusual. With that being said, though, the homeowners that were in the immediate area still did suffer damage. And typically, it's foundation damage. And so, it's expensive, and makes the home unlivable until it's repaired. And so, that's scary to me just to think about that, and try to figure out whether or not that's something that our clients need to take more seriously.Caroline Brenneis:So, just to piggyback off of that a little bit, I know you had mentioned that earthquakes aren't common in North Carolina. So, is this something that falls within a standard policy, or would this be something that a policy holder would have had to add on or however the real terms are [crosstalk 00:11:17]?Michelle O'Connor:That's a great question. And we put a blog out about it because we've had so many questions about it. It is not covered on our standard policy, home policy in North Carolina. So, it is an endorsement that you have to add on to your policy. But we have had a lot of folks that have gone ahead and added it because they felt like for the amount of premium that it was worth it. It's a low exposure, but again, if it happens to you, the damage would be a lot. So ...Paul Chadowski:So, you don't need to get a separate policy, you get an endorsement. And if I recall from back there, it's a different deductible. And does it apply to the house and the content separately? I mean, how does that earthquake coverage work?Michelle O'Connor:So, in North Carolina, I believe it's going to work much differently than it will when Jeff starts to talk because it is a low risk in our area. And every company is doing it a little bit differently. So, I don't have a broad stroke answer. Matter of fact, one of our home carriers is actually adding it to their policy at no additional charge. Most of ours are not though. So, it's a conversation that we'd like to have with every person individually, so, we can guide them for their particular insurance company that they're insured with. But for most of ours, the deductible is being chosen to be the same as the home. But again, it's different for every insurance company.Paul Chadowski:Jeff, I'd like to get some of yours, and some of what you see out in your part of the country. Some of the specific types catastrophic claims [inaudible 00:12:45].Jeff Arnold:Sure. Yeah. So, when you think about the West, you think in terms of this just wide open space. And so, wildfires is the first, right? And so, wildfires, yes, like such as Michelle, earthquakes, right? Especially, in California and then over the San Andreas Fault. And then flooding like in all areas of the country, flooding. But wildfires being one of the biggest. They spread rapidly, and quickly destroying wide swaths of land in a rapid fashion. Oddly enough, after the fires beat everything down and gone through, suddenly, the rain will come in. And that is equally as bad because there's nothing to catch the rain anymore. So, you have massive mudslides, massive amounts of flooding.Jeff Arnold:And as Michelle alluded to earlier, many things aren't covered in a normal policy. The buzzword that she used, our industry word is endorsed, right? You have to add that on, endorse it onto a home insurance policy. Not every carrier will add a earthquake as an endorsement. Some it's a separate policy. Most use a write your own or federal program for the flood insurance. That's separate too. So, depends on the exposure: wildfire, flood, or earthquake. If it can be added to policy or bought separate.Paul Chadowski:That's really helpful with that. We have people that have told us, "I don't need flood insurance. I have this endorsement called sewer and drain backup." And so, you have these sump pumps, whatever. I mean, do they have a false sense of security, Michelle, with this? If they have a sewer and drain backup, and flood, are they different types of ... They address different things?Michelle O'Connor:They sure do. Yes. And I do think sometimes homeowners feel like that they do have everything that they need without having that extra conversation. But definitely, sewer and drain just addresses things that overflow into your home basically. So, that toilet that overflowed was covered under the sewer and drain coverage, that it's not going to address flood. And I always simplify the flood definition, and it's rising or standing water. So, mudslide as well as Jeff said. But I always simplify it so that people get that illusion that when it rains too much, as Jeff said, and that the water can't soak into the ground, which we've had happen a lot in the Southeast lately, that's not covered either if it comes into your house from the outside.Paul Chadowski:And Jeff, if you can comment, some people have said, "Boy, my house got flooded and it was covered. But then we use the word flood and it's not covered." I mean, do we simplify the words? Are there types of floods that are covered when we use that word? And then explaining it then the other type of flood that you would have to get a separate policy for?Jeff Arnold:Yeah. It's confusing for many people who don't understand the legal contracts that we sell called insurance policies. Right? And so, making terms to simplify it because people don't want to remember the words indoors or sewage and water back up a lot of times. Tiles of moving pools of water, right? If it's moving, do you know when you think of it in terms of a flood, it's moving because rains come down, a large water's moving down the street, or moving through your yard or whatever, that's going to be subject to flood insurance. That's going to need flood insurance. As she was alluding to the sewage and water backup, they may call that a flood. Oh, it flooded my bathroom. Yeah. That part is covered. And so, it's really how the word flood is interchanged there. It's semantics, but that's our business. Right?Paul Chadowski:Exactly. I've also read, getting back to wildfires, that some carriers may consider treating that as a separate type of risk and not under fire because of how much the fires are and wildfires are different than fires. Can you comment on any of that with the wildfires, or any of your carriers saying, "We're thinking about giving a separate deductible, purchasing a separate coverage for wildfires versus just standard fires." Have you seen anything like that?Jeff Arnold:Yeah. I think what you're alluding to is the word peril in our industry, right? What's a covered peril? And so, there is talk, discussion about it in the industry as they suffer more and more losses to maybe offer a hybrid policy that might, A, require additional coverage for that or limit the coverage that they would pay. And there isn't one in Arizona, Colorado, or California that I'm aware of that excludes that, but there's certainly talk of that. So, it'd be tough in those states. Remember there's still a little bit of John Wayne in everybody in the West. They still [inaudible 00:17:04] as a cowboy. So, even if they live in the city. So, be tough to push that through.Caroline Brenneis:Michelle, I know we touched on hurricanes a little bit, but can you share a little bit about how ... Because in North Carolina, I feel like, as you said, they're very, very common. So, where that fits in a typical policy, or if it's an add-on, or explain a little bit of that process for us.Michelle O'Connor:Sure. So, that one's going to really be dependent on where you live. Where we live in Charlotte, it's inland. And so, wind and hail is covered as part of our standard homeowners policy. But on the coastal areas of both North Carolina and South Carolina, you have to add on wind and hail to your policy. And typically, it does have a separate deductible. It's the bulk of the cost for most of the policy to add those coverages on. And your proximity to the coast is going to depend on just how much you're going to pay for that extra coverage, which you desperately need if you live in either one of those areas.Caroline Brenneis:Funny, if I was on like Million ... One of those like game shows, I would have really thought it was the exact opposite that it would be definitely included if you were closer to the shore, like an add-on, if you were. Is there any particular reason or just because it's so just more common, it's a way to make more money?Michelle O'Connor:Absolutely. It's the risk factor, right? So, how likely is it to happen to the house on the coast? It's very likely. How likely is it to happen to my house in the more interior parts of North Carolina? Not as likely. So, the things that are not as likely are typically going to be things the insurance companies are going to be willing to cover at no additional costs.Caroline Brenneis:Oh, see, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you. See, now I know. I'll get that question wrong if I'm ever on a game show.Michelle O'Connor:Glad to help out.Jeff Arnold:That's the value of an agent right there. Right? That's the dollar, the bang you get for your buck when you use an agent who has that knowledge to transfer it. So good stuff.Michelle O'Connor:Yeah. My husband and I, we're currently in an apartment, but we're looking for houses, trying to find the right town, yada, yada, yada. And when I was working with Michelle now, a few months ago, I was like, "Can you help me out?" And she's like, "No, I don't work in New Jersey." And I was like, "That's just devastating." But yeah. I mean, I think after working in this world for a little over a year now, I think I'd be so silly not to work with an agent. So, thank you all.Paul Chadowski:When we have these storms, you talk about this, here comes the hurricane. And okay, the winds blowing [inaudible 00:19:28]. And this is where sometimes we say, "Okay, is it hurricane? Or is it flood?" Just going back to that. And just can you walk us through some of what the insurance companies how they look at it, and wind-driven rain, or what this is, and just address that. Just how that can be. Is it more clear cut, or is there some question?Michelle O'Connor:There's definitely some questions. And I've definitely heard some stories on the East Coast. We had a number of flooding issues right in a row with several different, big name storms over a couple of years, which is unusual to have that many in a short span. And there was a lot of issues that it comes down to trying to determine where the water came from. Especially, because it takes some times to get those claims settled that usually there's a time lapse as well. So, it makes it more difficult. Again, in the interior areas it's going to be a little bit easier, because if the roof blew off in it, that's how the water got in.Michelle O'Connor:It's going to be pretty clear cut versus rising, standing water is not as common where we're at as it would be in some of those other areas. So, there was a lot of issues with that though. It's not clear cut. It's definitely difficult to figure out. And the adjusters had their work cut out for them when they go in there to make sure that they've got those determinations. Thankfully, a lot of the policy holders have both policies. And so, it's really just a matter of figuring out which one's going to cover it at that point.Jeff Arnold:Couldn't put it more eloquently than that, so, nothing to add there. One thing that came to mind is what you'll see, if you watch the news, you scratch your head at why this would happen. But sometimes in large flood areas, you see all these fires pop up, and you're like, "What in the world? No gas leaks fires. Well, guess what? There is fraud involved. Consumers know, "I don't have flood insurance. I have fire insurance." And so, fires start popping up. Right? All kinds of fraud in these places. And so, "My house burned down in the middle of the flood, that's covered, right?" Yeah. Okay. That's covered.Jeff Arnold:But what Michelle ... I was reading between the lines there too, what she was saying is, yeah, the adjuster has to be part investigator, right? To say, "Okay, what happened?" Especially, in times of flood when there's fire. Is this a gas leak that sparked this, or did this person not have flood insurance and decided torching it may be the only alternative? So, it's an ugly side of the business, but worth having dialogue about.Caroline Brenneis:Wait, Jeff, how do you know that they're lying? Committing fraud. That's crazy. I can't believe that my brain would literally never even go there. Like I-Jeff Arnold:I don't think any of our brains would but years and years of exposure to it. And this is why insurance companies hire these arson investigators, and ex-fire chiefs to study this stuff. So, unfortunately it exists, but part of the industry.Caroline Brenneis:My mind is blown by that statement. I really did not know that was a real thing.Paul Chadowski:All the more reason why you say. And I'm sure each of you have rapports with your adjusters. It is. And the adjusters that settle these claims, if you can comment to that with homeowners, that they really do want to help you. Sometimes you hear, "Hey, you're going to find ways to deny the claim." But I would think in most cases you really are trying to work with that. I don't know where that stigma is but, Jeff, if you can comment on that. Just what you're saying that there's a lot more that are covered than denied, and how that process works.Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Thanks. Agreed. I would submit to you and our listeners that our goal in the insurance companies that we represent is not to deny a claim, it's to pay it as quick as possible, right? To make that policyholder whole, and get them back on with their lives. But during the term of their investigation, or while they're looking at the loss, if they find something that just doesn't seem right, then they got to start pulling all these fraud levers, and validating it. Right? So, that's why some might submit back to say, "Well, my flame wasn't covered." Or, "The insurance company is trying to deny me." That's not normal, it's abnormal. And certainly the cures that we have in our mix don't participate in that behavior, is a primary function of getting the claim paid.Caroline Brenneis:Wonderful. Thank you. So, I know we talked a little bit about flooding in the beginning. But just, I guess, want to make it a little bit more clear for the listeners. So, flooding is covered in most insurance policies if it comes from inside the house, but if it's external it's not covered, or am I wrong?Jeff Arnold:Yeah.Michelle O'Connor:No, you got it exactly right. The clarification I would make is that I wouldn't use the term flood in the house. From our agencies, we're going to use the terms sewer and drain in the house. And that is when the sewers and/or drains backup and come back into the house. The resulting water, again, Jeff said it was semantics. It is. But I won't call it flood inside. Outside is the flooding. And that's the rising standing. And I really like Jeff's explanation, the moving water as well. We don't typically think of it that way because of our topography where we're at. But that's a great explanation as to really separating the differences. Do you have anything else you can add to that, Jeff?Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Thank you so much. Caroline, what I would add is now your user would take away, "Oh, if it's inside the house to have sewage and water is fine." That's also an endorsement. Not every homeowner's policy includes sewage and water backup. So, that is something that, if you're just trying to save money, an agent might not add on. Or certainly if you buy it online, you didn't check the box you want it. Because my sewage would never back up. I'm on public or I'm on septic. So, you don't check it. And the only way you find out it's not covered is when you're standing in your own backup, for lack of a better word. But yes, inside too you want to back up, if you have the endorsements covered. External moving water, flood.Paul Chadowski:Is flood insurance required in some places, and other places it's optional? So, can everyone get it if they want insurance, or are there restrictions? Are there times you have to get flood insurance?Michelle O'Connor:So, yeah, that's an excellent question. If you're by a body of water, typically, flood insurance is going to be required. There's flood plains that have been established that allow the mortgage companies to know that you're at higher risk, your home's at higher risk. And so, if they're going to lend you money, which most folks do have a mortgage, then they're going to require the flood insurance be added onto it. But with that being said, if you don't have a mortgage, if you're in a flood plain, you're still at higher risk. So, it's still something that you want to consider adding, or having that additional policy be put onto it.Michelle O'Connor:But there's lots of folks that are not in flood Plains that are at risk of flooding. And so, that's been a hot topic in North Carolina because, again, of the additional rain that we've had in recent years, and the lack of flood policies, and some of the middle of the state, and some of the mountainous areas as well. Where they can still flood and in a hour or two's time span have torrential rains that create that.Jeff Arnold:What I would just add onto what Michelle said is ... Everything exactly perfect the way she stated, but these maps are five, 10, 15, 20, 50, 100-year flood plains. So, we have an idea of when a flood is going to happen, right? Looking at history, and projecting forward. And that topography map that she referred to is laid out over places that are built or where people live. And then that helps drive the pricing, but also the proximity or projected of when another flood might occur.Paul Chadowski:That's really helpful on all that too, because again, I am sure there's going to be more questions with this too. And that's why you need an independent agent to talk it through, and have these discussions. But you mentioned topography, which is a nice word. And I'd like to pivot to that, Jeff. And then I'll get to Michelle on the same thing. What are some of the challenges or issues with home insurance based on the climate that you ride out there out West, the topography, how things are built. What are some of the things that you see that you need to talk about that homeowners need to be aware of?Jeff Arnold:So, in the desert Southwest, where I live, it's just heat, right? It was 118 for three days in a row here. Stuff just stopped working, right? Air conditioners stop working. Our water heaters get overheated because in some places they're exposed to the elements. And so, the number one thing is a lot of times equipment breakdown. And just, if you have a wood roof, it deteriorates much quicker in 115, 118, 120 degree weather than it would maybe at 70, 80, 90 degrees. So, roofs take a beating. And then equipment break down is a very prevalent thing in our area. But you have to add on indoors to your home insurance policy.Paul Chadowski:Michelle, can you [inaudible 00:28:06] about what's some of the same issues?Michelle O'Connor:I don't know that we have the topography issues that Jeff has. We have heat, certainly. It's not been 118. Thank heavens. We have a lot of humidity. Certainly, air conditioning units break down, but most of our carriers aren't offering that endorsement yet. There's a lot of talk about it, but it hasn't rolled out, at least in North Carolina. We're a unique state. So, it's rolled out in other states around us, but just not in ours. I don't know that we have quite those topography issues. I mean, we are fortunate not to suffer hard winters. We rarely have cold temperatures. So, we're in a sweet spot. So, if you're looking for a great place to live, definitely, Charlotte.Caroline Brenneis:[crosstalk 00:28:46] so much to move out of New Jersey. I hear like the 4:00 PM like nighttime is coming, and it's brutal. And it's like negative two degrees.Michelle O'Connor:Well, come on down. January and February are fabulous months in the Carolina.Caroline Brenneis:I'll be there.Speaker 1:Also, between the two places, and if you can each talk about this. Jeff, I don't know if a lot of the houses out West they have basements. In the East, where I'm at too, we do have basements. And just what type of exposure or what homeowners should be aware of that if you can just maybe comment on the types of homes, and just some of the considerations people have to look at.Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Great. So, not a lot of basements, very few. I'm thinking of a few old missile silos that people have turned into homes. But yeah, not a lot of basements in the area. But in our area, it's a flat roof. And so, if you're not used to flat roofs, you're like, "Why would a roof be flat?" Right? It's a pitched or very flat roof. And so, those can collect a lot of dust. We have these haboobs, if you've ever seen them on TV. Massive dust storms. They can collect a lot of dust, and just a lot of debris gets stuck up there. So, you have to be aware of what's on your roof, right? And clean it a little more than maybe in other parts of the country where you have to clean out your gutter, occasionally, from leaves and limbs, right? You have to be on your roof, quarterly, which your app can remind people to do, right? If you're in the Southwest, get up there and clean off your roof. So ...Paul Chadowski:I don't know if you have ... I believe basements are a little more common out in North Carolina, that particular area. And what type of different exposure does that open up a homeowner to having basements?Michelle O'Connor:Sure. So, actually, where I'm at in Charlotte, they're not very common. We have red clay. And it's very difficult to dig in. So, if you have a basement, it's typically a walkout because that's the only one to dig so many ... And so, you also have an elevated lot to go along with that because it has to be a walkout. So, it's a unique situation. There's not a ton of different things except for making sure that an agent knows that you actually do have a basement because of the increase in the home value. And it does add quite a bit of value because of how expensive it is to dig those basements out. So, that's unique. Other than that, folks are either on a slab or a crawlspace. And there is some maintenance that goes along with those as well.Michelle O'Connor:Similar to the roofs, on the slab probably the hardest thing is just the temperature changes. If we do have a cold snap and it goes into freezing temperatures, there's sometimes some exposed piping that has burst. We've had that happen to clients, and even some of our own staff because of where it was located. And then the crawlspaces can gather water. So, keeping those dry is definitely a maintenance issue in North Carolina. Just making sure that it's sealed off properly so that it doesn't mold.Michelle O'Connor:And that you know what's going on down there, because if you have plumbing, which most folks do down there that leaks, and you don't know it, because of where it's located, giving those a check every now and then is not a popular thing to do because of the things that might live under there. But necessary.Paul Chadowski:Definitely what I'm hearing, oh, is of course, why you need to talk to your agent about a lot of things, because some people feel if it happens to the house, my homeowners covers it. And I know, Jeff, you alluded to equipment breakdown. They go, "Hey, my furnace just went, or air conditioning just went. Why isn't it there?" Or, "Hey, I have ants in the house, vermin or whatever." If it happens in the home, it's got to be home insurance. And just some of those discussions. And just how you look to address some of that, that we're finding that there are things that can't be addressed. You just need to talk to your agent about that. But I just didn't know if you have clients that have come up and say, "Well, gosh, if it happened to my home, that's what I have home insurance for. Why is it not covered?"Jeff Arnold:There is a blurred line and a confusion surrounding is it warranty? Is it home insurance? Is it under my deductible? Right? What part does coverage come in? Right? And so many times, so often, people are so strapped. They just want it to be covered under insurance, or warranty, or something. If it's not under either is where anger enters in or frustration enters into the process. But typically, try to counsel homeowners to think of this as large losses only. Don't think of your homeowners as a maintenance policy, or a maintenance product. You're only going to make yourself uninsurable in the future if you keep filing these very small claims or treat it like a warranty, you're pricing yourself out of coverage is what you're doing.Paul Chadowski:So, do you use the same rationale to come up with deductibles too? I mean, what can someone take so that they're not, and how do you maybe address that? I don't want to get too far off track, but to your point, I think you probably find out what their risk tolerance is also in that discussion.Jeff Arnold:Yeah, absolutely. For high net worth clients, it's going to start at a $10,000 to 15 to $20,000 deductible. Eat all the rest under that to keep your premium low. And for most home policies, 1,500, 2,500, 3000. Got to be comfortable with that. Some lenders have issues. Those are getting few and far between now. A lot of them don't care. But you have that conversation, reduce the premium by increasing deductible. Which means you're on the hook for these smaller items, which is good.Caroline Brenneis:Wonderful. While we're on preventative maintenance, a little bit, vipHomeLink, part of one of our features in the app is really keeping up-to-date with your maintenance, and then the app sends you tailored reminders based off the maintenance updates that you input in your app. Excuse me. So, can we just talk a little bit about the importance of maintaining your home in terms of insurance policies and how that affects what insurance a policy holder would buy?Michelle O'Connor:I think Jeff alluded to this already, but the maintenance of your home, if you think about the home policy as being for catastrophic things, the other issues are things that you should be taking care of on a regular basis. So, that includes being able to budget for those items, and scheduling those items, which the app does a beautiful job of reminding you of, because life is so busy. It's hectic to remember that your AC unit needs to be serviced or, "Oh, it's fall coming. So, we need to have the heat serviced." Those types of things. Or our roof's 15 years old. There's a good probability that we need to start thinking about replacing the roof.Michelle O'Connor:So, I think that those are all important maintenance issues that customers need to think of. But there's also lots of little things too, even things like ... We're big with changing the batteries on our smoke detectors in October, and really pushing that message out. And even though that's not a home maintenance issue, it's certainly an insurance issue from folks dying in house fires. So, that's something that we push out to our clients at that time too.Caroline Brenneis:Well, we should definitely partner in October because that's when we do a big check your smoke detector batteries too. So, I feel like we can do something there.Michelle O'Connor:That would be great because we pushed so much social media out that month. And typically, we get to do a lot of fun things in our community during that time too. And of course, this year we're doing nothing. So ...Caroline Brenneis:What a weird time this year. Truly has been. So, again, vipHomeLink is an app that helps simplify home ownership as well through the use of technology. Can you share a little bit of how technology has changed both of your businesses?Michelle O'Connor:I'm sure you'll echo these sentiments, but technology has been such a welcome thing in, especially, the last six months, knowing that our agency was already prepared for something like this to happen. And by that, I mean that we've been electronic forever. And so, we've already been able to sign applications electronically. We are able to video chat with our clients. We have voiceover IP phones. So, during hurricane season, we push out to our clients all the ways that we're prepared for the unexpected to happen. Little did I know that the disaster preparation was going to prepare us for COVID as well, because it was seamless to use the same plan, and same operation. The good news is we had power, which I never anticipate in a hurricane. So, that's always a good thing.Michelle O'Connor:And there's a few less details that way. But technology has really changed our business because it makes things so much easier. You don't have to drive to my office to make a payment nor to sign anything. And we're still able to have the personal connection with things like video chats, which we've used a lot with our clients in the last six months.Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Great. All of those, agree completely, right? To be able to remote your entire workforce of 70 plus people came easy to us because we had a disaster preparedness plan, right? The time you spend now working on those things pays big dividends in the future. And it paid off for us all big or bigly, as the kids would say, during this COVID experience. And then, one other, in addition to [inaudible 00:37:31] webinars that everyone is really adopted to, the big pivot for us, which I was slow to adopt that just blew up for us during this is texting.Jeff Arnold:I mean, we went from very little to three different text platforms just for endorsements, for payments, for communication. And I'm not talking about web chat, I mean, just flat texting. There's a certain segment of the population just prefers to text. And so, that's been a real game changer for us. How to manage the avalanche of it coming in. And how to prioritize, and how to get it attached to the client file. But it has made easier for the consumer because that's how they want to do business. And so, just a simple sign off on that is I can't believe how much texting has accelerated just during COVID for us.Caroline Brenneis:Definitely. Yeah. I mean, I feel like even with us, we were virtually ... No offense ... Other than Paul, all in the office. And I think we honestly have worked so well together with Zoom, and Skype, and email, all of that. But it's really been oddly enough like something that I think we as a team have really excelled at. And I could only imagine that that too works with you to your clients, especially, in a time of panic, and stress, and all of that. So, Paul, do you want to take the last question? It has your name written all over it.Paul Chadowski:Before I get to that though, the other part is it's great to have all those plans. And I think I heard it from you, your teams embraced it too. Because so often you can have the best laid plans, but it sounds like everyone embraced the technology, and there may have been some adjustments for them. But can you briefly comment on that before I get to the last question? Just has it been an adjustment for everybody or has it been pretty smooth from that standpoint?Michelle O'Connor:Well, I have a much smaller team, so Jeff probably has a lot more to share. My little team of six did pretty well. Ironically enough, there were two girls on my team that did not do as well at home. And one asked me to go back to the office. The other one was our receptionist, and we never really intended it for her to be at home because of her job functions. Still having to deal with some logistical things like mail, and checks, and things like that. But our office is set up so that it was very easy to put them back in there with social distancing, and they're good to go. And they're actually quite happy that way.Michelle O'Connor:So, I think we could still pivot back, and put everybody remote if need be. But right now we don't need to do that. So, we're operating that way. Now, we have kept all the rest of us separate. And that was mainly because of how small we are, we can't afford to share anything with each other either. So, it's just given us that flexibility. But Jeff, I'm sure you have a lot to share since you had a lot more folks that had to embrace it.Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Well, it's so similar though, right? No matter the size, my experience is that people really react to change in one of three ways. Right? And so, in our organization, your organization, there's going to be those that are early adopters, and just with great enthusiasm, and excitement go, "Yes, I'm for this. Let's do it." There's those that just want to cross their arms, dig their heels in, and say, "All right, let me find out what's going to go. And then I'm going to be on the sidelines and figure out which side I'm joining. Am I joining the eager, enthusiastic side, or am I joining the side over here that's saying it won't work. It'll never work. We can never serve these customers. We can't do that. I have to get checks. I have to do this."Jeff Arnold:And so, organizations large and small deal with one of these three scenarios. And the tough part is to convince everyone that this is the right thing. Change scares all of us. Right? Change scares my wife. She doesn't want to be working with me 18 hours a day in the next room, right? [inaudible 00:41:03] but she's used to the house all on her own. And so, that's changed. Yeah. It's really just being aware that changing affects everyone differently, listening and working through that.Paul Chadowski:If you could tell your policy owners one thing, what would it be other than use vipHomeLink? Which we'd love you to say. But other than that, what'd you want to tell your policyholders?Michelle O'Connor:So, the one thing I want to tell my policyholders is not to be afraid to call us. That there's lots of things that happen that if they would just give us a call first, we could talk through with them. Everything from maybe a potential claim they're not really sure. Don't be afraid to call us. We don't have to turn it into the insurance company to have a conversation, and decide what the best course for them personally is. And there's also lots of things that happen to their home as well. They're putting an addition on, maybe they've decided to hire a nanny. Go ahead and give us a call on the front end of that, so, we can talk it through, and talk about all your options. We may think of something that you hadn't and be able to share that with you in advance that can change the course of your decision.Paul Chadowski:And Jeff?Jeff Arnold:Yeah. Thank you so much. Three different messages if I can tie them together. One is buyer beware, right? You heard all these conversations here about endorsements, and different coverages. Know this, in our industry you get exactly what you pay for, right? And so, if you just buy a policy yourself online, good for you, but understand what you're buying. Our best counsel, because this is what we do is to find an independent agent near you or online, then get that advice and counsel. It's not any more expensive. It doesn't cost anymore. These people are passionate about what they do.Jeff Arnold:And so, then I would pivot from that to say, you get what you pay for, use an agent. And then what companies are spending billions of dollars today to get you to do is bundle. So, absolutely bundle, right? Bundle, bundle, bundle works because it saves you that. And the other jingle discount double-check. Yes, go ahead and do that. And then, if you can complement a great insurance program with a home maintenance piece like vipHomeLink, right?Jeff Arnold:To make sure that you understand the way insurance is used, to use it the way it's supposed to be used as a catastrophic loss piece, not as a maintenance plan. Maintenance on you. And if a maintenance problem use your warranty. But combine those three. Combine a good agent with vipHomeLink, and a quality carrier that allows you bundle, then you will beat the insurance companies. And so, my last message is that's my last book is How to Beat Your Insurance Company. You don't beat your insurance company by filing claims, you beat it by doing all the things I just said before. So, thanks.Caroline Brenneis:Wonderful. Well, thank you both so much for joining us. I just wanted to give you each a few seconds to share where people, our listeners can find you. This is the final week in our series 150 Days of Psalms. Today's teaching is by Amanda Opelt. Amanda is a Ministry Leadership Team member at theHeart Church in Boone NC. She is also a singer, songwriter. Visit her website here. WALTER BRUEGGEMANN "The use of these 'psalms of darkness' may be judged by the world to be acts of unfaith and failure, but for the trusting community, their use is an act of bold faith, albeit a transformed faith. It is an act of bold faith on the one hand, because it insists that the world must be experienced as it really is and not in some pretended way. On the other hand, it is bold because it insists that all such experiences of disorder are a proper subject for discourse with God. Nothing is out of bounds, nothing is precluded or inappropriate.” "To withhold parts of life from that conversation is in fact to withhold part of life from the sovereignty of God. But such faith is indeed a transformed faith. It is faith in a very differed God, one who is present in, participating in, and attentive of life. The presupposition and affirmation of these psalms is that precisely in such deathly places as presented in these psalms, new life is given by God." RE-ORIENTATION Psalm 13: "But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord's praise, for He has been good to me." Psalm 57: "Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth." Psalm 69: "But as for me, afflicted and in pain–may your salvation, God, protect me. I will praise God's name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving. Psalms 146-150 "The transition marked by this upright line of a letter is always abrupt. It indicates that somewhere, somehow an invisible line has been crossed and the focus of the lament has turned from the self to Elsewhere. Sometimes it seems simply a matter of exhaustion. I cannot bear the burden of my sin any longer. I have not more tears left to weep, I have no more outrage left to voice. At other times the person lamenting simply seems to wake up. It is the line that must be crossed from the sorrowful self-centered 'I,' 'me,' or 'mine' passages to the praise dominated 'You' verses when it has been at least realized that God is faithful." MICHAEL CARD "Like some sort of interior spiritual San Andreas Fault line, it represents the precise point where two continents have been rubbing up against one another - the huge island of self and vast uncharted and unknowable continent of God's Presence. It is the line of momentous movement from 'me' to 'You.' It is a signpost along the journey of the psalms, from Torah obedience (Psalm 1) to worship (Psalm 150)." PSALM 148 Do I love God's presence? Do I love God's law? Do I love God's fame?
