Welcome to episode 10 of the Big Rig Talk Podcast! Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) was introduced in 2015 and became mandatory for the majority of truckers by December 18th, 2017. There was an extension offered for the ELD implementation for truckers that met specific exemption requirements and the end of this extension is Monday, December 16th 2019. In this podcast we discuss the following around e-logs: - What it was like to use paper logs for our trucking business! - Our experience implementing the ELDS for all of our semi trucks. - The challenges we faced during the ELD implementation, or our ELD Headaches!- The Pro's and Con's of Electronic Logs!- Our thoughts on the future of ELD's.

When ELD's FailWhat to do when ELD's fail. Electronic Logs can and will fail for some. What should you do if this happens? Many things can go wrong with electronics. Number one you can lose power or maybe your ELD is on your phone. If it is on your phone many things can happen there too. First and foremost if you don't pay the phone bill you will lose your ability to use your ELD. Bottom line is ELDs can fail. So what can you do legally. The FMCSA suggests that you write your drive time, Sleeper and hours on duty down. They say that a driver must get their ELD fixed as soon as they can. If a driver goes past 8 days without fixing their logging system the driver will be endanger of being shut down. Troy's Suggestion What to do when ELD's Fail. On this weeks show Troy suggested before you attempt to drive make sure you notify your company. Ask them to send you a message giving permission to continue driving. If your carrier is not willing to put that in writing you might think twice about moving that rig. Cover you behind drivers in every way you can. Magna Stop the New truckers Buddy Magnastop Have you heard of Magnastop? This new product was invented by a trucker for truckers. We'll open the forum with the ELD discussion.  As the ELD mandate enforcement approaches Dec 18th, many drivers are becoming more angry and frustrated.  Despite attempts by OOIDA to eliminate the mandate, or  even members of Congress to delay the law, the mandate stands.  What are the gripes about ELD's?  Is it privacy? Is it wages? Is it Parking? Is it Safety?   Or is it the enforcement of Hours of Service, which many are opposed to? Although many drivers support the use of Electronic Logs, it appears that many more do not.  On October 3rd, 2 organized groups, ELD or ME and Operation Black and Blue will start heading to Washington DC, to protest what they believe is an unfair overreach into their privacy and their wages.

I'm back with an all new episode. It's time to address the real issue around our Hours of Service. I think we've lost our minds. People seem to have lost all their good sense and ability to reason over this electronic log mandate. In this episode, I will tell you that we NEED the electronic log if we're going to be forced to operate under such an inefficient and archaic system. I've been using one for five years and you won't get it away from me.

This could possibly be the last of my pondering's on electronic logs. Why? Because arguing against e-logs has a massive potential to drop the proverbial brick on your foot. Listen on to find out what I mean. I start the podcast by giving a brief summary of some of my past e-log episodes, including Fear and Loathing of Electronic Logs, E-logs: My First Impression, and E-logs: Do They Really Increase Driving Time?. In the feedback section, I mention the Good Men Project Web site, where some of my articles are cross-posted. Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast? Well, it finally happened; I was going to run out of time on my e-logs before I got to my destination. What would happen? Find out in today's podcast. But before that happens, I tell you a few examples of how e-logs are affecting my efficiency and performance as a driver. There are links to my first two podcasts/blog posts on e-logs, "Fear and Loathing of Electronic Logs" and "E-logs: My First Impression," and three of my Twitter buds are mentioned, @Dean0806, @DroidTrucker, and @darkstaff. Today's podcast is brought to you by a bone-headed rookie mistake that I made the first day I had my electronic logs. I tell you that story and how e-logs affected the situation. I also tell you what happened during my e-log training session. Good times. Uh-huh. If you missed the first installment about my "Fear and Loathing of Electronic Logs," you may want to check that out before you meander into this one. And once again, @Dean0806, a.k.a. Dean Vader gets another mention for his helping me understand e-logs. There will be a couple of videos of different e-log units if I can remember to post them. In today's podcast, I battle my fear of electronic logs by enlisting a Twitter friend, @Dean0806 who's already been using e-logs for a while. He helps us understand how his system works and explains that each trucking company can set up the system differently. He also addresses some of my fears. Mentioned in the podcast is Jason from the Truck Driver's News Web site, the guy who graciously (or stupidly) let me guest post on his site. Also briefly mentioned is my love of Planners, as explained in the podcast called, "When Planners Don't." Got a second to Rate and/or Review the podcast?
