This week on the Oakley Podcast, Jeremy Kellett sits with Michael and Leslie Hopper, a husband-and-wife team at Oakley Trucking, to share their late-career transition into trucking and eventual success as owner-operators. They walk through Michael's move from multi-unit management and daycare operations and Leslie's 31-year restaurant career into trucking in their late 40s, starting with carriers like Werner, Tyson, U.S. Xpress, and FedEx Custom Critical before buying their own trucks and ultimately landing at Oakley. The Hoppers explain how teaming works day vs. night, how they became a top revenue truck pulling an end dump, why they're now moving to pneumatics for longer miles and higher pay, and how trucking allowed them to buy a home, build retirement, and support a large blended family. Their key message: it's never too late to reinvent yourself, owner-operator trucking can be a powerful path to financial freedom, and companies like Oakley can make the leap from company driver to business owner much more achievable. Key topics in today's conversation include: Welcoming the Hoppers to the Show (0:42) Leslie's Restaurant Career and First Talk of Trucking (6:09) Michael's Corporate and Daycare Management Background (9:17) How They Met, First Date, and Long-Distance Relationship (13:18) Convincing Leslie to Change Careers and Go to Truck School (16:44) Training Together at U.S. Xpress and Becoming a Team (18:23) Why Teaming Works for Them, Day vs Night Driving, and Resets (23:44) Taking the Leap to Owner Operator and Early Panic With No Loads (26:35) Running FedEx Custom Critical and Department of Defense Freight (29:59) Leaving FedEx, Short Hazmat Stop, and Choosing Oakley (33:17) Deadheading, Emergency Loads, and Being a Top Revenue Truck (36:27) Leslie's Social Media, Oakley Community, and Dump Video Followers (41:01) Buying Their House on Five Acres And Building Late-Life Retirement (44:02) Moving From End Dump to Pneumatic and Chasing Higher Rates (47:32) Why It's Not Too Late to Start Trucking at 50 and Thrive (52:39) Oakley Trucking is a family-owned and operated trucking company headquartered in North Little Rock, Arkansas. What if the real reason your business cannot scale is not your people, your market, or your effort, but that everything still depends on you? In this episode of Sharkpreneur, Seth Greene interviews Hector Alvarado, Co-Founder of Optimize Business Systems, who explains how small and mid-sized businesses can reduce founder bottlenecks by building stronger systems, clarifying roles, improving leadership, and ensuring consistent execution. He also explains why business owners must shift from day-to-day firefighting to strategic leadership if they want to build companies that can grow without being in constant emergency mode. Key Takeaways:→ Owner-dependent businesses struggle to scale because too many decisions flow back to the founder. → A business is harder to sell when its value depends entirely on the owner's day-to-day involvement.→ Second-line leaders are essential to building a scalable company. → Business owners need regular time away from the weeds to see the bigger strategic picture. → Strong systems are more than SOPs; they encompass leadership, execution, accountability, and clarity. Hector Alvarado is an entrepreneur, operations executive, and business consultant with 27+ years of experience transforming companies across the logistics, transportation, construction, and home-service industries. His expertise isn't theoretical—it's built on decades of diagnosing operational chaos, fixing broken systems, and leading organizations through high-stakes growth. One of Hector's most notable accomplishments was the complete turnaround of Willy's Trucking. As VP of Operations, he led the company from a $1.3M annual loss in 2018 to a profitable sale exceeding $25M in 2021—a feat that earned him industry-wide respect. Today, he serves as VP of Operations for the largest NGL and Butane hauler in Western Canada, overseeing large fleets, operational excellence, and strategic expansion. Hector is also a Lean Black Belt, Continuous Improvement Master Trainer, and EOS implementor, bringing a rare blend of tactical expertise and strategic leadership. Beyond his corporate roles, he runs three successful businesses under Family Legacy Industries and manages a growing real estate investment portfolio, providing firsthand insight into entrepreneurship and wealth-building. An extra-special edition of Overdrive Radio this week, handing the mic over to our own Long Haul Paul and, with the narration this week for the scene out at Large Cars & Guitars last month in Bristol, Tennessee, another of Overdrive's own in regular contributor Bobbi McGee. Her story will be live early Monday, June 22, 2026: https://overdriveonline.com/15828174 There at the truck show, three drivers were recognized together for quite an astounding achievement. Hard to fully comprehend what it might take to lay down 7 million safe miles over the course of a trucking career. We're not sure anyone can fully wrap their heads around it, but the fact remains that these three have all done it, with more than 21 million miles between. And at the now many-years-running Large Cars & Guitars show, Candy Bass, Eddie Parrish and Mike Brown came together all in one place to be honored for the accomplishment. LHP and McGee sat with the three to deliver today with two perspectives on what have been, and continue to be, genuinely amazing careers over-the-road. Hear LHP's take in the podcast, and catch the story in the post that houses the episode at the website for McGee's salute to them. We can all echo McGee when she wrote, "Here's hats-off to these three. It was a honor to be in their presence." Why is it so hard to do things that should be easy?In this episode, I unpack a pattern that has followed me for as long as I can remember: putting off even the simplest tasks until they build into a mountain of overwhelm. From shaving and grocery shopping to university commitments, podcast episodes and launching Resilient Roadways, I explore what happens when ADHD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder collide. For me, anxiety isn't something that appears only during stressful moments. It's a constant companion. A handbrake that never fully releases.I talk about living in freeze mode, the exhausting cycle of avoidance and panic, and the frustration of knowing exactly what needs to be done while feeling unable to do it.Along the way, I reflect on trucking life, the challenge of finding balance, why anxiety follows me even into some of the greatest moments of my life, and how these struggles continue to shape the purpose I'm pursuing through mental health advocacy. If you've ever looked at a simple task and felt completely overwhelmed, this episode is for you.--Follow The Dysregulated Podcast: Instagram – @elliot.t.waters Facebook – The Dysregulated Podcast YouTube – The Dysregulated Podcast (Official Channel)Created by Elliot Waters — Inspired by lived experience. Amazon's expansion into the LTL market is raising big questions across the transportation industry. In this episode, Craig Fuller, Tom Albrecht, and attorney Matt Leffler examine why Forward Air could be a strategic acquisition target for Amazon and what such a move would mean for carriers, brokers, and shippers. The conversation explores Forward Air's unique airport-to-airport network, the controversial Omni Logistics merger, and the legal battles that reshaped one of freight's most closely watched companies. The panel also breaks down Amazon's growing logistics ambitions and whether it can successfully build or buy its way into the LTL sector. Beyond M&A, the discussion turns to trucking safety, insurance requirements, freight fraud, FMCSA reforms, and the industry's ongoing struggle with outdated regulations. The hosts analyze proposed safety initiatives from the Truckload Carriers Association, debate higher insurance minimums, and discuss why stronger oversight of CDL training, ELD certification, and carrier registration could reshape the trucking landscape. Everybody says trucking is broken. Rates are soft. Insurance costs are crushing carriers. Operating expenses keep climbing. Every week another trucking company shuts its doors, another owner-operator parks the truck, and another driver wonders if it's still worth it. So here's the question: If trucking is so bad right now, how are some fleets and owner-operators still finding a way to win? On this episode of Brake Check, Charles Gracey sits down with two trucking leaders attacking that problem from completely different angles. JR Elrod, President of BAR Transportation, a 30-year trucking veteran who spent more than two decades hauling heavy freight before building a specialized carrier focused on government, project, and niche freight. Tyler Johnston, General Manager of Mercer Transportation, one of North America's most successful owner-operator carriers, with more than 2,200 contractors and nearly 50 years in business. In "Fleet Profitability Unleashed: The Optimal Dynamics Advantage", Joe Lynch and Zach Schuchart, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales at Optimal Dynamics, discuss how decades of academic research and advanced decision intelligence are being used to automate complex logistics and maximize carrier profitability. Zach Schuchart Zach Schuchart is the Senior Vice President, Head of Sales at Optimal Dynamics. He has over 20 years of experience in the North American and European transportation industries, including roles at UPS, CHAINalytics, and XPO, he brings deep expertise and leadership to the Optimal Dynamics team. As Head of Sales, he oversees a talented group of Account Executives and Solutions Engineers, guiding prospective customers through the evaluation of advanced optimization solutions that drive operational success. About Optimal Dynamics Optimal Dynamics provides the decision intelligence layer that powers logistics transformation. Born out of 40 years of research at Princeton University, Optimal Dynamics leverages proprietary artificial intelligence technology to automate, optimize, and radically improve decision-making across trucking and transportation operations. Headquartered in New York City, Optimal Dynamics is backed by marquee investors including Koch Disruptive Technologies, Bessemer Venture Partners, The Westly Group, and Activate Capital. Key Takeaways: Fleet Profitability Unleashed: The Optimal Dynamics Advantage In "Fleet Profitability Unleashed: The Optimal Dynamics Advantage", Joe Lynch and Zach Schuchart, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales at Optimal Dynamics, discuss how decades of academic research and advanced decision intelligence are being used to automate complex logistics and maximize carrier profitability. From Research to Reality: The Princeton Pedigree. Optimal Dynamics isn't just another tech startup; it is built on 40 years of academic research from Princeton University. This provides a level of scientific rigor and proprietary AI that differentiates their solutions from standard off-the-shelf logistics software. The Power of "Decision Intelligence". While many platforms focus on data visibility (showing you what is happening), Zach highlights the shift toward Decision Intelligence. This layer automates and optimizes the choice itself, helping carriers move from reactive management to proactive, data-driven execution. Bridging the Gap Between Planning and Execution. Leveraging Zach's 20+ years of experience at giants like UPS and XPO, the episode explores how traditional planning often fails when it hits the "real world." Optimal Dynamics focuses on creating dynamic plans that account for the inherent volatility in trucking operations. Leveraging High-Dimensional Artificial Intelligence. The core technology focuses on solving "high-dimensional" problems. Instead of looking at simple variables, the platform uses AI to process thousands of data points simultaneously—such as driver hours, fuel costs, and lane profitability—to find the "Optimal" solution. Automating the Complexities of Trucking. Automation isn't just about replacing manual tasks; it's about augmenting human capability. Zach discusses how their solutions allow sales and operations teams to evaluate complex scenarios in minutes rather than days, drastically reducing the "evaluation-to-action" cycle. Maximizing Profitability in Volatile Markets. In an industry with razor-thin margins, "Optimal Dynamics" means finding the most profitable way to move freight despite fluctuating market conditions. The platform helps fleets identify which loads to accept and how to route them to ensure maximum fleet utilization. Strategic Backing for Long-Term Transformation. The company's growth is fueled by marquee investors like Bessemer Venture Partners and Koch Disruptive Technologies. This week, Veteran owner-operator Scott Erickson joins the Oakley Podcast to share his 44-year journey in trucking, from falling in love with big rigs as a kid to running his own authority, losing everything when a family member stole his wife's lucrative business, and rebuilding life on a small Kansas farm. He talks about transitioning from reefer to Oakley's hopper division, why bulk work, though more exhausting, feels more meaningful, and how mental health challenges and isolation on the road have affected him and other drivers. Scott also tells the wild story of trading in a paid-for Peterbilt for a “deal of a lifetime” 389 that immediately blew up, only to receive a full in-frame at no cost. Through it all, he emphasizes resilience, the importance of family support, realistic expectations about owner-operator finances, and why he has no plans to ever retire from the job he loves. Tom Keller spec'd his first truck at 20 years old to haul watermelons off his family's farm. He'd drive a load to Indianapolis, not like the price, keep driving to Detroit, sell them, and set the cash on the kitchen table — then do it again the next morning. That hustle became Keller Logistics Group: 350 trucks, four divisions, and $200 million in sales out of Defiance, Ohio. In this episode, Jared Flinn sits down with Bryan Keller and Jonathan Wolfrum to unpack how a melon farmer's instinct for finding the next opportunity built a company that's survived every freight cycle since — including the recession that just leveled half the dry van market. They get into the speculative warehouse bets, walking away from General Motors, why they moved into bulk and ag freight, and what it actually takes to be named a Best Fleet to Drive For nine years running. If you're a carrier, owner-operator, or fleet owner trying to figure out your next move, this one's full of plays you can run. ➡️ Hauling bulk or looking to grow your freight? Step into Episode 215 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Scott and Josh, co-founders of Craft Culture Draft Solutions, to pull back the curtain on one of the most overlooked profit leaks in the bar and restaurant business — your draft beer system. From foamy pours and dirty lines to bad CO2 pressure and undertrained bartenders, these two Arizona-based draft pros break down exactly why money is literally going down your drain, and what you can do about it right now.Founded on April 1st, 2022, Craft Culture was born out of a shared passion for doing this work the right way — with 25+ years of industry experience behind Scott and 10 years of hands-on install and service work behind Josh. Together they bring a rare mix of technical expertise, hospitality roots, and genuine service-first mentality to a niche most bar owners barely think about. The conversation covers the science of temperature and CO2, the danger of a walk-in cooler flooded with gas (yes, it nearly happened to Scott), keg yields that should hit 95% but often drop to 50%, and what a red-yellow-green system health report can do for your beverage program. Delo also gets the scoop on their current big push: free draft system health checks for bars and restaurants across Arizona — and why they're giving it away.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 2:17) Delo's Intro, Batching Episodes & Why In-Person Always Wins(2:17 - 6:12) Scott's Origin Story: Hensley, Micromatic, Austin, and Starting Craft Culture(6:12 - 8:00) Josh's Background: Navy, Trucking, Logistics & Becoming a Draft Nerd(8:00 - 12:00) The Real Cost of Foam: Temperature, CO2, and Keg Yield Math(12:00 - 14:20) Line Cleaning, Off Flavors, and Bartender Training That Saves Profit(14:20 - 18:05) The YouTube Channel, Free Phone Calls, and Owning Your Beverage Program(18:05 - 21:30) Wine, Cocktails & Coffee on Tap: Why 304 Stainless Steel Matters(21:30 - 26:15) How to Find Craft Culture: The Guild, Distributors, Breweries & Word of Mouth(26:15 - 32:00) Free Draft System Health Checks: What's Included and Why It Matters(32:00 - 36:40) Non-Negotiables, Family Time, Sleep, and Running a Business with Heart(36:40 - 43:00) Rapid Fire: Cows, 80s vs. 90s, Aliens, Beans, and Build the Bar Right(43:00 - 45:15) Best Local Installs, Formation Brewing, Red House Cask System & Kansas City Airport

The Canadian trucking industry touches almost every aspect of commercial life — most Canadian products on store shelves made at least some part of their journey on the back of a truck. The conditions for drivers who got them there, however, are getting worse. A Globe investigation by Sara Mojtehedzadeh , an investigative reporter at The Globe, and Mahima Singh, a Globe data editor, looked into the concerns raised by drivers and experts in the trucking industry. They found widespread accusations of wage theft and exploitation, violations of labour laws and insufficient training. Sara's on the show to detail the working conditions for drivers , the impact of lax enforcement, and how this jeopardizes safety on the roads. Sara and Mahima will hold a Q&A about their investigation on Wednesday, June 3, at 12 p.m. ET. Send them your questions in advance. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this episode, we kick things off by examining Amazon's aggressive push into urban micromobility with a ten-month e-cargo bike pilot program in Washington, D.C. deploying up to fifteen battery-powered bikes through independent delivery partners. This marks Amazon's second U.S. pilot following Brooklyn in 2024, and builds on a global network that delivered 170 million packages via micromobility in 2024 across more than forty-five cities worldwide. Meanwhile, a sobering reality check from the banking sector reveals that stronger freight rates haven't translated into healthier carrier balance sheets at BMO, one of the largest lenders to trucking. Gross impaired loans stood at $417.2 million U.S. dollars, while allowances for credit losses climbed to $86 million from $57 million a year earlier, signaling continued financial stress across the carrier segment despite recent market improvements. Finally, we explore how fleet technology provider Motive is betting that artificial intelligence can solve the industry's most persistent operational headaches with its new AI Dashcam Plus and Atlas assistant unveiled at Vision 26 in Nashville. The dashcam combines telematics and cameras into a single unit powered by a Qualcomm AI processor capable of running over thirty AI models simultaneously, while Atlas scans safety, compliance and fuel data to generate morning briefings and draft personalized driver messages, saving fleets an average of twenty hours per week.
