Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Josie DiCarlo of Barnet Fair, Mike Ski of True Hand Society, Shannon Roche of Crust Vegan Bakery, Mike Barone of Grindcore House, and Rob Jahn and JP Flexner of Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company. This was a panel discussion held at the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company in Croydon, PA upon their invitation. The discussion was about punks who own and operate businesses. Despite being a terribly noise environment thanks to many individuals present not for the event but to drink and eating loudly amongst themselves, the discussion was still fascinating and well worth your time in listening. While full apologies are issued due to the sound, you’ll still find a thoughtful discussion of how each respective business came to be, what the interviewees brought to their business to make it unique, how the businesses reflect the ethics of punk, operating with a conscience under capitalism, dealing with the city/state and all the regulations that come with running a legit business, the toll making and sustaining a dream project takes on one’s life, and a great deal more. Many thanks go out to the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company for making this event happen and helping to bring together these inspiring business owning punks. They also make excellent beer. Ryann Casey/November 4, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Ryann Casey. Ryann grew up on New Jersey and only moved to Philadelphia about six years ago. In that time, she’s hosted art shows at various locations around the city, including the Grindcore House. These art shows benefit environmental and animal-oriented causes. They’ve raised both money and awareness while presenting the work of some tremendously talented artists. We discuss Ryann’s upbringing in a Roman Catholic home in North Jersey with a feminist, pro-Choice mother coupled with the influence of her grandmother. Art became a huge part of Ryann’s life at a young age and punk came on a few years later. In punk she found some of her ideals and social/political passions reflected back to her. While she’s always felt like a bit of an outsider in the punk community, she’s none-the-less a part of it as an organizer of significant events. We talk some about the mechanics of putting on charity events, what she looks for in organizations her efforts (and those of the participating artists) will benefit, how she overcame her shyness to deal with speaking publicly, and how to deal with the trolls who emerge from the lousy woodpile when one’s efforts are discussed in public forums. We also talk about non-traditional creative, artistic, and activist paths for young women. This was one of my most pleasurable talks in the series, so I hope you’ll spend some time listening Ryann Casey and I chat. Photos by Karen Kirchhoff     The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Dan Yemin/August 20, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Dan Yemin of the bands Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, and Paint It Black as well as others. Dan didn’t grow up in Philadelphia, but he’s lived here for 21 years. Dan’s played in three very popular bands and, into his forties, retains a tremendous enthusiasm for music and life. His devotion to the DIY ethos is still firmly in place. We talk about his upbringing surrounded by books in North Jersey in the ’70s and early ’80s, his early love of music beginning with hard rock, his discovery of punk through bands like The Clash in the early ’80s, his political and social aweness as well as veganism, playing in bands, seeing shows in dodgy places like City Gardens in Trenton, being inspired by the DIY ethos in the ’90s at the Jon Hiltz and Cabbage Collective shows and with bands such as Universal Order of Armageddon and John Henry West, the state of basement shows in Philly today, raising children, and scores of other subjects. Dan’s enthusiasm and positivity shine through in this interview. Addendum: The black-and-white photo was taken by Karen Kirchhoff in May 2014, the better part of a year after this interview was conducted. She took this photo so Dan could be included in her photo show at the Grindcore House begining on June 6, 2014.             The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
