Chilly Bakes Gluten-Free
Gluten-Free Lemon Bars with Poppy Seed Shortbread Crust

Chilly Bakes Gluten-Free

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 1, 2025 5:50

Hi Bakers, If you love lemon, you owe it to yourself to make these bars! Incredibly lemony with a buttery, poppy seed-studded crust, this is something you can't find anywhere gluten-free, so learn to make it yourself! You can do it, and I guarantee you already have the skills. Pressing dough into a pan and using a mixer are pretty basic ….You've got this, and I'm here to show you how. This makes a large pan, and the bars freeze well. Eat them frozen for a chewier version that may be even better than room temperature. Enjoy ~CarolynGluten-Free Lemon Poppy Seed BarsMakes one 9x13” panDry Ingredients1 3/4 cups Cup4Cup Multipurpose gluten-free Flour (Original Blend with milk powder)1/4 cup almond flour, blanched1 teaspoon sweet rice flour1/2 cup powdered sugar3/4 -1 tablespoon poppyseeds14 tablespoons butter, softened (1 cup minus 2 tablespoons)Wet Ingredients3 teaspoons lemon zest*6 tablespoons fresh lemon juice4 large eggs1 large egg yolk2 1/2 cups granulated sugar2 1/2 tablespoons Cup4Cup Multipurpose gluten-free flour ( Original formula with milk powder)3/4 teaspoon baking powder3/4 teaspoon saltPreheat the oven to 350°F and place the rack in the middle position. Grease or line a 9” x 13” pan and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the flours and powdered sugar. Using a hand mixer or pastry blender, thoroughly mix in butter until it makes large soft crumbs. Press the mixture into the bottom of the pan and 1/2”-3/4“ up the sides. If the dough is sticky, you can either chill it for 10 minutes before pressing or press it into place with a sheet of parchment or wax paper. Try to get the same thickness of dough in the pan to ensure even baking. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the crust is lightly brown. Cool for 10 minutes. While the crust is cooling, start making the filling. Using a large bowl, beat together the eggs, yolk, and sugar. Next, whisk in the juice and zest. Sprinkle in the flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix another minute or until well combined. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and mix again. The filling will be a light yellow color and smell divine. Pour it into the cooled crust. Bake for about 20 minutes. Rotate the pan in the oven and continue cooking for about 20 more minutes or until the bars are done. If the bars are browning a lot and not done, gently cover them with foil until the cooking is complete. To test for doneness, insert a knife into the center and when it has thickened filling on it, it is done. It will still be jiggly in the middle, and don't want your knife to come clean! The top of the bars will be well browned. Take the bars out of the oven and cool for 15 minutes. Then, dust with a thick layer of powdered sugar. Run a knife around the edge to keep them from sticking to the pan. Let the bars cool completely and chill. Cut into squares, hide from family if needed, and enjoy! If you chill or freeze the bars, the lemon flavor is even more intense. *if you don't have a zester, you can use the fine side of a cheese grater.

How Ceres Froze Over: Modeling the Ice-Rich Crust of an Evolving Dwarf Planet

Join planetary scientists Beth Johnson and Ian Pamerleau, lead author of a groundbreaking new Nature Astronomy study, for a deep dive into the icy mysteries of Ceres—the largest object in the asteroid belt and the only dwarf planet to be orbited by a spacecraft. While Ceres shows signs of an ice-rich interior, its heavily cratered surface doesn't behave like soft, ice-laden terrain. So what gives? To solve the puzzle, Pamerleau and colleagues used simulations and an updated model of how impure ice deforms. Their work reveals that Ceres once hosted a subsurface ocean that froze from the top down, concentrating impurities as it solidified and creating a gradient from ice-rich surface layers to a rockier interior. This research challenges long-held beliefs about the formation of continents and the onset of plate tectonics, indicating that the chemical signatures of continental crust may have originated much earlier than previously thought. We explore the implications of this study for our understanding of Earth's early geological history and the evolution of life.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesNature Journalhttps://www.nature.com/natureNASAhttps://www.nasa.gov/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

Why has Burzin been burning? All the clues point back to one place: Lady Teribald's House of Chance. If they're going to solve this mystery—and find out if it's connected to the greater afflictions of the continent—the investigation team must find their way past the gambling hall's many distractions and to Teribald's office in search of answers. And then there will simply be the matter of a final confrontation… This week on Perpetua: The Flames of Burzin Pt. 4 Perpetua Guide [In Progress v.02] NPCs & Monsters [PNMS] Kalsi's Lantern [NMKLN] Typical Traits: Glowing, Inconspicuous, Magical Stats: DEX 8, INS 8, MIG 6, WLP 10 Attacks: Flicker Shot Special Abilities: Burn Out In-Game Description: Paper lamps filled with the lively fire of a forgotten god. Also known as “Mysterious Lanterns” before you get deep into the main quest in Burzin, these are super easy to grind against . Sure, Burn Out means that your whole party takes 10 damage every time you kill one, but that's still way less damage than you'd potentially get in a longer fight against some other low level monsters. Starter Tip: They're one of the only enemies that are straight up WEAK to regular physical damage! Kind of obvious, but this IS labeled “starter tip” after all. Mr. Crumb [NMCRM] Traits: Loyal, Gullible  Stats: DEX 10, INS 8, MIG 6, WLP 8 Attacks: Jab, Revolver Blast, Quickshot (Reaction),  Special Abilities: Elemental Bullet, Deadeye In-Game Description: Lady Teribald's loyal henchman. A crackshot with his elemental revolver. Mr. Crumb and Mr. Crust (below) are obviously designed to complement one another. Crust is the close up combatant, which makes Crumb the long ranged sniper. (Can you be a sniper if you just have a revolver?) That said, if you do get into his face, his counterattacks will make you pay for it… unless you've got a high defense score! My advice: Send Antistrophe in there and count on his ability to avoid incoming damage! Starter Tip: Don't worry too much about his Elemental Bullet attack. It's so unlikely that the magical damage he happens to hit is going to be important to you. But it might be worth grabbing his gun after the fight before you leave the scene and it despawns! Mr. Crust [NMCRU] Traits: Cocky, Brutal, Great Smile Stats: DEX 8, INS 6, MIG 12, WLP 6 Attacks: Wide Swing, Croupier's Rake Special Abilities: Bodyguard (Reaction), Improved Defenses, Improved HP In-Game Description: Lady Teribald's personal bodyguard. He's died for her before. Crust is the designed to look like the heavy hitter in the fight, but mostly he's the “hard to hit”-er. He's got better physical defense than an Embear and the same magical defense as a Flarie, so if you get a stroke of bad luck, you might end up missing him a bunch. But, because of his bodyguard ability, you're gonna just have to power through, because it's not like you can ignore him! Starter Tip: If you give him the Slow status effect, it drops his defense score by 2, which makes this fight so much easier! Kalsi, Lantern's Flame [NMKLF] Traits: Furious, Bright, Lonely Stats: DEX 6, INS 6, MIG 10, WLP 10 Attacks: Flaming Smash, Flameburst Special Abilities: Lantern's Light, Lantern's Heat, Flying In-Game Description: Forgotten God who once called Burzin his home. Led astray. Okay, the way I beat this fight means I only briefly had to contend with Kalsi directly. But if you try to fight him straight up, it's gonna be tough! He's a Champion class enemy, so he's got a TON of HP, and not only is he immune to Fire and Poison, but by default he has no elemental weaknesses, and he's flying, so you can't melee attack him. Yowch! Talk about a GOD. Starter Tip: The best way to beat Kalsi is to not have to fight him directly in the first place! The “Objective” move is SO powerful in this game, I wish more Roleplaying Games had something like it! Lady Teribald [NMLTB] Traits: ??? Stats: DEX ??, INS ??, MIG ??, WLP ?? Attacks: ??? Special Abilities: Mysterious Necklace In-Game Description: Drawn into a tragic fate by an alluring, otherworldly power. Teribald sucks so bad! I hate her so much, and what's worse is I can't figure out how to ACTUALLY FIGHT HER. Every time I run the fight, I have to either take too long to beat Crust and Crumb (so Kalsi emerges, and the fight is with him instead) OR I win via Objective and the fight with her never happens! If I could take Crust and Crumb out quicker, maybe I could get to go against her? Does anyone know if she has any unique loot? Starter Tip: No idea! For years, scientists have grappled with differing values derived from cosmic microwave background radiation and supernova observations. Lead author Wendy Friedman discusses how recent findings suggest that the standard model of cosmology holds up, with the Hubble constant now estimated at 70.4 kilometres per second per megaparsec, aligning more closely with earlier measurements. This breakthrough could reshape our understanding of the universe's expansion and evolution.Venus's Thin CrustNew research indicates that Venus's crust is unexpectedly thin, challenging previous assumptions about the planet's geology. A study published in Nature Communications reveals that Venus lacks the tectonic activity seen on Earth, resulting in a crust that is about 40 to 65 kilometres thick. This research proposes a model of crust metamorphism that could explain how volcanic activity persists on Venus, despite the absence of plate tectonics. Upcoming missions, including NASA's Davinci and Veritas, aim to gather more data that could confirm these findings and enhance our understanding of Venus's geological processes.Building Blocks of Stellar FormationA recent study highlights that the formation of stars is influenced not only by the amount of gas in a galaxy but also by its distribution. Observations from the WALLABY survey, conducted using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder Telescope, reveal that star formation is concentrated in areas with higher gas density. Lead author Seona Lee explains how this research sheds light on the intricate processes that govern star formation, suggesting that gas location is critical for the birth of new stars across various galaxy types.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/0004-637XNature Communicationshttps://www.nature.com/naturecommunications/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 66 for broadcast on 2 June 202501:00 Resolving the Hubble constant debate12:15 Venus's surprisingly thin crust22:30 Building blocks of stellar formation30:00 Science report: New links between autism and Parkinson's disease

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO COVER YOUR TRACKS and TO COVER ALL THE BASESIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to cover your tracks. Now, if you do something and you don't want anyone to know you did it, you might want to cover your tracks. Let's say there are cookies in the kitchen and I'm not supposed to eat them. I might go to the tray of cookies and eat two and then I might move the other cookies so it looks like they're filling the plate. Still. I'm trying to cover my tracks. You also hear this phrase when you watch a show where there are criminals. After a criminal commits a crime, they might try to cover their tracks. They might put everything back the way it was. Let me see, let's say they were stealing money from a safe. They would probably close the safe and make everything in the place where they are stealing the money from look the same way as when they got there. They try to cover their tracks.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to cover all the bases. This means to make sure that you do everything in a situation. Let's say you're working on a project at work. You want to make sure that you cover all the bases. When you work on that project, you want to make sure that manufacturing goes well. You want to make sure that design goes well. You want to make sure that you have thought about and taken care of all of the aspects of the project. You want to cover all the bases. So to review to cover your tracks means to make it look like you haven't been there. I've actually done that after I've eaten cookies before. I rearranged them on the plate so it looks like the plate is still full. And then to cover all the bases means to make sure that you take care of all aspects of a project. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Minosmil. I can imagine Bob and Jen going on a trip, but I'm not able to picture Bob the Canadian without pizza. And my response it would be hard! Right now. We make homemade pizza for supper once a week. It's my favorite night. Yes. So thanks Minosmil for that comment. Yes, I can imagine going on a trip. If I go on a trip, I'm hoping wherever I go that there's pizza there because I still like it. What an amazing food. Crust, cheese, sauce, some meat on top of it's just amazing. Hey, what was I going to say? I was going to say something else. I can't remember Jen and I going on a trip. That should happen at some point in our lives, probably. So here's what I wanted to show you. We're a little behind right now in this part of Ontario, Canada. If you look here on the lilac tree, you'll see they're just starting to get their little flowers. And usually this has happened already. I should pause a little bit and stop moving so you can see. And then over here we have some purple ones. There's actually not a lot on this tree either. Hopefully I'm not too close. Hopefully you can see, if I go too close, it doesn't focus. So hopefully in the next little while things warm up a bit.Jen and I need to start our farmers market in four weeks and things aren't growing as fast as they normally grow. We had a burst of growth, like the daffodils started growing really well. If you look over here, you can see there are some daffodils there. These aren't ones that we grow and sell, but definitely it needs to warm up a bit around here. The trees are starting to get leaves, so that's cool. But, yeah, it's like, you can see I have my sweater on again today. So it's another cool day here. And yeah, we need the suSupport the show

"Why did I ever think this was a good idea?" That 3AM alarm for Disney races is something we all question—but then the magic happens. This episode, we're joined by Vern (@RunsOnPizza), whose vibrant interviews with costumed runners have become a beloved fixture of runDisney events.Vern shares her journey from nervous first-timer in 2018 to the unofficial sideline reporter of the Run Disney community. What began as a simple desire to give creative runners a platform has evolved into something truly special. With her broadcast journalism background and genuine love for the community, Vern arrives on the first bus (before 3:15AM!) to capture the stories behind the elaborate costumes that make runDisney races so unique."When I started in 2018, I don't remember seeing half of what I see today," Vern reflects on the evolution of race costumes. From foam constructions to motorized elements, the creativity continues to push boundaries—and Vern is there to document it all.The training lull between Disney seasons can be challenging, but Greg reminds us that finding local races is key to maintaining motivation. Meanwhile, Alicia celebrates two years of her run coaching business, specializing in first-timers and marathon training with personalized weekly plans. We spotlight the Kentucky Derby Mini Marathon with Sarah and Ashley, who take us through the unique experience of running through Churchill Downs. Unlike Earth, which supports life, Venus is a harsh environment with extreme temperatures and a crushing atmosphere. We discuss how this convection could indicate a more active geological landscape than previously understood, shedding light on the planet's evolution. The Conclusion of the Gaia MissionNext, we mark the end of an era as the European Space Agency officially powers down the Gaia spacecraft. After over a decade of groundbreaking work mapping the Milky Way, Gaia has provided invaluable data that has transformed our understanding of the galaxy. We highlight the mission's key achievements and the lasting legacy of its extensive data archive that will continue to inform astronomical research for years to come.SpaceX's Manned Polar Orbit MissionAdditionally, we celebrate SpaceX's successful launch of its first manned mission to orbit above the Earth's poles. This historic flight, which included a variety of scientific experiments, showcases the capabilities of modern space travel and the potential for future polar exploration.
