Is AI the latest chapter in our long history of creating an all-knowing God? AI ethicist Christopher DiCarlo certainly suspects it is. In his new book "Building a God: The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and the Race to Control It, DiCarlo argues that we are creating AI systems with godlike capabilities that will eventually exceed all human intelligence through their ability to make unprecedented inferences and connections. Like so many other self-styled ethicists, DiCarlo emphasizes the urgent need to establish ethical guardrails and principles for AI development. He expresses both hope for AI's potential benefits, particularly in medicine, while warning about the risks of losing control of super intelligent systems that might, one day, develop their own ethical frameworks. Given that AI development is currently largely controlled by profit-driven companies and shaped by geopolitical competition rather than ethical considerations, DiCarlo advocates for raising public awareness and establishing robust international oversight bodies (similar to the IAEA for nuclear weapons) to govern AI development. He argues that AI's potential for systemic manipulation and control makes it potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons, as it wouldn't require human intervention for the technology to destroy humanity. Going from owner operator to employer is a tough transition. It's not easy to learn how to lead a team or to be able to communicate well with them. Most of us came from a system where we were not trained very well by our “leaders” and thus did not get the experience to manage a team properly. This leads to micromanagement and trust issues when you delegate out tasks. Even worse it leads us to believe that it's not worth it to hire anyone and that we are better off just remaining as a one man show or possibly just having a helper that we never plan to fully train. There is a better way though and you can escape the grind of having to be a part of your business everyday.Dennis DiCarlo is the owner of Kronus Software and Carpet To Go Flooring. Having started a flooring retail store, it wasn't long before Dennis realized he couldn't be in all places at the same time or even be capable of handling the workflow that he was developing. Bringing on staff was inevitable, however it didn't go how he planned at first and was left doubling back constantly to button up tasks or to make sure it was done right the first time. This was not letting him or his team meet their full potential. Dennis learned that he needed to become a better leader and started investing in himself as well as technology to get him where he wanted go.This week on Floor Academy Podcast Dennis and I will discuss what the standard shortcomings are when you are new to management, some simple changes you can make to how you delegate out tasks and communicate, and lastly how technology can provide you a system of accountability.Check out our sponsorsJohns ManvilleThe International Surfaces EventKronus SoftCheck out our website and storeSupport the show

Episode 6 explores what happens when AI is explicitly used to understand humans. In this episode, we're joined by James DiCarlo, the Peter de Florez Professor of Neuroscience at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the MIT Quest for Intelligence. Trained in biomedical engineering and medicine, Professor DiCarlo brings a technical mindset to understanding the machine-like processes in human brains. His focus is on the machinery that enables us to see. "Anything that our brain achieves is because there's a machine in there. It's not magic; there's some kind of machine running. So that means there is some machine that could emulate what we do. And our job is to figure out the details of that machine. So the problem is someday tractable. It's just a question of when."Professor DiCarlo unpacks how well convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a form of deep learning, mimic the human brain. These networks excel at finding patterns in images to recognize objects. One key difference with humans is that our vision feeds information into different areas of the brain and receives feedback. Professor DiCarlo argues that CNNs help him and his team understand how our brains gather vast amounts of data from a limited field of vision in a millisecond glimpse.Alex and Anthony also discuss the potential clinical applications of machine learning — from using an ECG to determine a person's biological age to understanding a person's cardiovascular health from retina images.

Justin Wood runs the Wood Lab at Indiana University, and his lab's tagline is "building newborn minds in virtual worlds." In this episode, we discuss his work comparing the visual cognition of newborn chicks and AI models. He uses a controlled-rearing technique with natural chicks, whereby the chicks are raised from birth in completely controlled visual environments. That way, Justin can present designed visual stimuli to test what kinds of visual abilities chicks have or can immediately learn. Then he can building models and AI agents that are trained on the same data as the newborn chicks. The goal is to use the models to better understand natural visual intelligence, and use what we know about natural visual intelligence to help build systems that better emulate biological organisms. We discuss some of the visual abilities of the chicks and what he's found using convolutional neural networks. Beyond vision, we discuss his work studying the development of collective behavior, which compares chicks to a model that uses CNNs, reinforcement learning, and an intrinsic curiosity reward function. All of this informs the age-old nature (nativist) vs. nurture (empiricist) debates, which Justin believes should give way to embrace both nature and nurture. Wood lab. Through the updated WorkForce West Virginia tab on the WV One Stop Business Portal, employers can more easily access key resources in one convenient location at business4.wv.gov. The updated WorkForce WV feature in the WV One Stop Business Portal includes several improvements and enhancements, most notably a “My Linked WorkForce Accounts” feature, direct access to crucial online employer resources and information, and direct access to employer account functions such as managing employer account information, filing contribution/wage reports, and making delinquent payments. The improved tab also includes a message section where the agency can quickly and easily disseminate important notices or messages from the filing office. “This is an excellent example of West Virginia agencies working together to improve processes and outcomes for employers across the Mountain State,” said James Bailey, Secretary of the WV Department of Commerce. “This partnership showcases how the innovative integration of resources benefits business owners and employers around the state.” Read more: https://www.theintermountain.com/news/communities/2023/03/updates-made-to-wv-one-stop-business-portal/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Today on the Seven Figure Consultant Podcast, I am joined by co-owner and CEO of Raincatcher, Marla DiCarlo. Marla helps small business owners determine the value of their business and walks them through the selling process.  In this episode, we discuss how business owners can proactively plan ahead when building their business, what actually goes into the process of selling a business, and how to shift perspectives when making business decisions. Tune in to this insightful conversation and receive a free resource from Raincatcher.   In this episode: [01:00] Why Raincatcher is such an important tool for small business owners.  [06:30] Understanding the driving factors that can impact a business's value.  [11:30] How to change your perspective when making business decisions.  [13:30] Marla explains the most common ways to understand the value in a business and how to attach a dollar value to a company.  [20:15] Things to consider when selling your small business.  Key Takeaways:  Raincatcher is designed to educate business owners and guide them through the process of selling their business.  You cannot plan for everything.  Every business owner should get a benchmark valuation because it helps to see the business through a different lens.  Part of selling your business is going through the emotions of “are you really ready to sell?” When selling a business, most business owners often are focused on the purchase price, but there are many other things that tie into selling a business that are often more important, like who will continue their legacy with their customers, employees, and community.  Quotes:  “Building your business without a business plan is kind of like building a house without a blueprint. Then you'll look at it and think, ‘I should have put a door here, but we built a massive brick wall'.” - Jessica Fearnley  “If you take off those blinders and you start to bring in the stuff that is going on on the outside and incorporate that into your decision making, what you'll find is your business actually ends up performing better. You end up making decisions that I don't know you would make if you were constantly just focused on the next thing”. - Marla DiCarlo “Being proactive and not reactive, that's one of the keys to being a successful business owner and it's hard to do”. - Marla DiCarlo Guest Bio:  Marla DiCarlo is an accomplished CEO & CFO with more than 30 years of experience leading business owners to build valuable and profitable companies. As the co-owner and CEO of Raincatcher, her mission is to support American entrepreneurs at every stage of their business journeys - whether they are interested in selling today or want to build a more valuable company for themselves and their legacies. As a Certified Professional Accountant, Marla understands the true power of both valuations and solid bookkeeping – especially in today's unstable economic climate. Marla draws upon her business experience to encourage entrepreneurs to look at their finances in new ways. Inspiring them to manage their business like a valuable asset that will grow in value over time. To her, that simple mind shift increases your business valuation and the abundance of your career efforts over time.   Useful Links:  Get in touch with Jessica to discuss your consulting business Jessica's LinkedIn Raincatcher Website Raincatcher's Free Valuation
