In this episode Matthew Lloyd Roberts was joined by the historian Katrina Navickas to discuss the history of Grosvenor Square in Mayfair as a site of protest and policing. From the early twentieth century the square was home to the US Embassy, and it was the site of several protests against American foreign policy, most notably the Vietnam War in 1968. The policing of the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign led to the first CCTV system in the UK being erected in the square. The Embassy building itself, designed by Eero Saarinen, became a potent symbol of American power in London, but more recently the Embassy has moved to a more secure location in Nine Elms.Katrina Navickas is Professor of History at the University of Hertfordshire. Her latest book is Contested Commons: a History of Protest and Public Space in England (Reaktion Books, 2025). She contributed the ‘Croydon' chapter to Owen Hatherley's The Alternative Guide to the London Boroughs (Open House London, 2020), and also the Croydon guide for the Open City Pocket London maps. She is also a founding member of the Rural Modernism network. The podcast is produced in association with the Architects' Journal, London Society, C20 Society and Save Britain's Heritage. We often say that inclusive sports clubs are about more than results — and Ace Players Croydon is the perfect example of that. For nearly 50 years, the club has been a place not just to play tennis, but to find friendship, support and community. Leigh Armstrong has been part of the Aces since 1984, and in this powerful conversation, he takes us through the incredible history of the club — including the vital role it played during the AIDS epidemic, when it became a lifeline for so many in the LGBTQ+ community. This is a story about resilience, belonging and the power of sport to bring people together — on and off the court. Our conversation with Leigh from the Aces will make you feel all of the emotions, and we're so grateful to him for choosing us to tell the club's powerful, poignant story.

Ahead of the 2nd event of the LET Access Series season at Allegria Resort in Austria, I was pleased to be joined by LETAS pro Canice Screene as we discuss a lot of good stuff in the episode including a wild story at the end that you need to listen to! Canice was born in Croydon area of London and has represented Republic of Ireland since the age of 13. In her own words she has always seen herself as being fully Irish with both her parents being Irish. Canice would start the game round about the age of 4/5 and would start competing at age of 8. At the age of 13, Canice would win Surrey Rookie Tour & would also win South Regional U18's Championship before going to The States to Boston College and for Boston she would captain the team in the 1st Division for the final couple of years of her time there. Canice described herself as a great captain and enjoyed the responsibility! In 2025, she would turn pro and would start off quite well with 11th at Madaef Golf's Ladies Open and 22nd at Super Bock Ladies Open on LETAS and 32nd on LET at Dutch Ladies Open. At KMPG Women's Irish Open would see Canice finish 37th in her home country event. This year has been a good start having seen a T8th at Madaef Golf's Ladies Open in Morocco & last week coming up just shy of qualifying for US Women's Open at Riviera CC finishing in 5th place. A talented player with a lot of potential and it was a pleasure to speak with Canice with some good laughs had. All the best for 2026. On this episode of Mind the Gap, Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner are joined by Tom Needham - teacher, school leader, and author of Engelmann's Direct Instruction in Action - to explore what direct instruction really means. Marking the final book in the In Action series, the conversation digs into Siegfried Engelmann's work, from the power of carefully sequenced examples and non-examples to the importance of “sameness,” big ideas, generative content, and tightly designed practice. Tom explains how direct instruction transformed his teaching of English, particularly for pupils who had struggled with writing, spelling and foundational skills, while also showing how its principles apply across subjects from maths and science to history and geography. Along the way, they discuss the philosophical and practical objections to scripted programmes, the role of teacher expertise in curriculum design, and why precise instruction can be a route to greater pupil success, confidence and independence.Tom Needham has been teaching for nearly twenty years. He has previously taught English in International schools in Malaysia and Nigeria; EFL in Bangkok and Harrogate, as well as Sociology, Media Studies and all the Humanities in Croydon. He is author of Explicit English Teaching, and most recently Engelmann's Direct Instruction in Action, which will be available on the 19th of June. Tom is currently an Assistant Headteacher at a school in Charlton.Tom Sherrington has worked in schools as a teacher and leader for 30 years and is now a consultant specialising in teacher development and curriculum & assessment planning. At a quarter past four in the morning on the 13th of June 1944, the world's first cruise missile fell out of the sky onto a railway bridge in the East End of London. It killed six people. One of them was 19-year-old Ellen Woodcraft. Another was her eight-month-old son. Their husband and father was a soldier in Normandy. He would not learn of their deaths for days.In this episode, Mat McLachlan tells the story of Hitler's V-1 — the buzz bomb, the doodlebug, the first robot weapon ever used in war. From the secret laboratories at Peenemünde to the photo-interpretation tables at Medmenham, from the Guards Chapel disaster on Waterloo Sunday to the Tempest pilots tipping flying bombs out of the sky with their wingtips, this is the eighty-eight-day campaign that brought a new kind of terror to a city that thought the Blitz was over.Through authentic voices from the summer of 1944, we hear George Orwell guiltily hoping the next bomb falls on someone else, the diarist Vere Hodgson writing that the brain of man has gone so far beyond his morals that the only thing to do is scrap him and begin again, and Field Marshal Alan Brooke recording his disgust as the Home Secretary panics in front of the War Cabinet. We meet R.V. Jones, the 28-year-old scientist who'd been hunting the V-weapons since 1939, and the Double Cross Committee that fed Berlin a brilliant lie that saved central London — at the cost of the working-class boroughs to the south. We follow Wing Commander Roland Beamont and the Belgian ace Remy Van Lierde hunting buzz bombs over Romney Marsh, and the Australian pilot Ken Collier who accidentally invented the wingtip technique that would become the defining image of the doodlebug summer. Why did Hitler refuse to aim the V-1 at the Allied invasion ports, where it might have changed the war? Why did the British government deliberately steer bombs onto Croydon and Wandsworth instead of Westminster — and keep it secret for thirty years? How did a robot bomb costing five thousand Reichsmarks come closer to ending the war than any other weapon Germany ever built? Mat explores these questions through the words of those who were there — the scientists, the pilots, the cabinet ministers, and the Londoners who lived under the buzz.A clear-eyed look at one of the most futuristic weapons of the Second World War, and the man who threw it away. Hitler had the world's first cruise missile. He used it to kill people in their beds. And he lost the war anyway.“Hitler, and all of us, hoped this new weapon would sow horror, confusion and paralysis in the enemy camp. We far overestimated its effect.” — Albert Speer, Nazi Minister of ArmamentsEpisode Length: 40 minutesFeatures: First-hand accounts from George Orwell, Vere Hodgson, Field Marshal Alan Brooke and Hans Speidel; Wing Commander Roland Beamont's recollections of hunting the V-1; the testimony of fireman Harold Chisnell from the Imperial War Museum sound archive; Hitler's confrontation with Rommel and Rundstedt at Margival on the eve of the Normandy collapse; and the story of the Double Cross deception that saved central London.Presenter: Mat McLachlanProducer: Jess StebnickiSail through history with Mat McLachlan! In this episode of Start Here, Alexis Ffrench dives into the world of Dubstep with journalist and author Joe Muggs, exploring a genre that transformed from a small South London scene into a global musical force.Together, they trace dubstep's origins in Croydon, drawing on UK garage, drum & bass and Jamaican sound system culture, and unpack the sonic DNA that defines the genre — from deep sub-bass and syncopated rhythms to its signature “wobble”.The conversation explores how a tight-knit community of producers built a global movement, the genre's explosive rise into mainstream culture, and its unexpected crossover with heavy metal and pop. They also delve into the physical and emotional power of bass, and why dubstep creates such an intense, immersive experience on the dancefloor.Featuring key figures including Mala, Skream, Benga, Caspa, Rusko and Skrillex, this episode is a powerful introduction to one of the most influential electronic genres of the 21st century. Gather In - stories of conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Part One.Josephine Last Whalebone—known to us simply as Josie—was born on King Island in Bass Strait during the 1940s, a small and remote island located between mainland Australia and Tasmania. Growing up in a Catholic family, Josie spent her early years on King Island before her family later moved to Tasmania. As an adult, she eventually followed her sisters to the Australian mainland, where she built a life in Melbourne, working, raising a family, and creating many lasting memories.I first met Josie about 25 years ago when missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knocked on her door and began teaching her about their faith. Interestingly, this experience reminded Josie of an earlier time when she and her late husband, Bill, had been taught by sister missionaries while living in the Croydon area of Melbourne many years before. There was also an unexpected connection between Josie and my family. My wife had grown up on King Island, and sharing that background quickly created a strong bond between them. With a population of only a few thousand people, meeting someone else from King Island on the mainland is quite rare. This interview captures Josie's remarkable life story, including her memories of growing up on King Island, her family experiences, and her personal faith journey. Josie has an incredible ability to recall the small details and meaningful moments from throughout her life, making this a fascinating conversation about history, family, and faith.Because of the length of the interview, it is being published in two parts.I hope you enjoy spending time listening to Josie share her life story.

On this week's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, the lads are joined by Fulham's in-form winger and Welsh international Harry Wilson — and there are some unbelievable stories behind his rise.Harry opens up about the incredible moment his grandad placed a £50 bet on him to play for Wales when he was just 18 months old — a punt that eventually paid out £125,000 when Harry made his debut years later. It's a story so good it genuinely sounds like a film. The conversation also dives into Harry's journey through Liverpool's academy, signing his first contract at just nine years old, and learning from elite players like James Milner, Adam Lallana, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino in Jurgen Klopp's first-team training sessions.Harry explains the reality of the loan system in football, including the tough spell that nearly derailed his career before a confidence rebuild back at Liverpool helped turn things around. There are also brilliant insights into the Wales national team, including what it was like playing alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, the electric atmosphere of the Welsh anthem, how Craig Bellamy's strict standards are shaping the new generation, and Harry reveals his personal favourite goal ever — a stunning free kick at Old Trafford for Derby County. On top of that, there are of course some classic Crouch pod shenanigans, such as Sid's surreal story about drinking Bollinger with Brazilian Ronaldo on a ski trip, debating the correct size of shin pads, and Crouchy settles the confusion around a recently surfaced video of him and Messi's 1v1 in Croydon…Chumbawamba00:00 - Subscribe song & Intro01:21 - The “wrong glass for drinks” debate03:30 - Sid's ski trip and meeting Brazilian Ronaldo06:20 - Asking Ronaldo what phone network he's on08:45 - Ski trip stories continue10:48 - Harry Wilson joins the podcast11:30 - Harry's incredible season at Fulham12:50 - Palace or Spurs goal – his favourite this season13:45 - Listening to the podcast & life with a newborn14:40 - Shin pad debate: modern footballers wear tiny ones18:05 - Signing for Liverpool at just 9 years old20:10 - Growing up in rural Wales21:45 - The call from Ian Rush22:50 - Wales debut at 16 years old23:50 - The famous £50 bet from his grandad26:30 - Passion & playing for your country 28:30 - Michael Sheen's team speech31:10 - The harsh reality of loan spells in football33:00 - Injury setbacks and rebuilding confidence33:50 - Training with Klopp's Liverpool first team36:40 - Best player in Liverpool training?38:20 - England's chances at the World Cup40:00 - Craig Bellamy's strict standards with Wales42:10 - Bellamy's dressing room rules44:40 - What players do on Wales international camps46:05 - Marco Silva's impact at Fulham47:55 - Harry reveals which phone network he uses49:20 - Favourite goal ever: free kick at Old Trafford51:00 - Set-piece tactics in modern football55:00 - Listener questions & football stories01:03:19 - Harry Wilson leaves the podcast01:04:20 - Paddy Power's Cheltenham segment01:07:00 - Score predictions begin01:10:30 - Spurs' struggles discussed01:16:10 -Crouchy and Messi in Croydon?01:17:00 - OutroFor more Peter Crouch: Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouch Therapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouch For more Chris Stark Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwell Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14 #PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast Hosted on Acast. Ralph McTell is one of Britain's most enduring and respected singer-songwriters, a master storyteller whose songs have become woven into the fabric of English folk music. Born in Kent and raised in Croydon, McTell developed an early love for American blues, folk and traditional British music. As a teenager he was captivated by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, influences that shaped both his fingerstyle guitar technique and his gift for narrative songwriting. After studying at art school in the early '60s, Ralph began busking and performing in London's thriving folk clubs, quickly building a reputation for his intricate guitar work and warm, conversational stage presence. He signed with a record company in the late '60s, releasing his self-titled debut album in '68. His breakthrough came in '69 with “Streets of London,” a song inspired by his travels in Paris and London, where he encountered loneliness and poverty firsthand. The song's gentle melody and compassionate lyrics struck a deep chord. Though it became a hit in the early '70s and was later re-released to even greater success, its impact went far beyond chart positions. It became one of the most covered songs in British music history, recorded by hundreds of artists worldwide and earning McTell the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. Throughout the '70s, Ralph toured extensively releasing many albums. While “Streets of London” often overshadowed his broader catalogue, McTell consistently proved himself far more than a one-song artist. In the '80s, Ralph broadened his scope. He composed music for children's tv and wrote songs for stage productions. His collaborations included projects with fellow folk legend Wizz Jones and work alongside various orchestras.A defining characteristic of Ralph McTell's career has been his longevity and consistency. Rather than chasing trends, he has remained devoted to craftsmanship. In the 2000s and beyond, McTell continued to record and tour, releasing albums that revisited his influences and explored new material. He has also been honoured for his contributions to music, including receiving an OBE in 2010 for services to folk music.Today, Ralph McTell stands as a cornerstone of British folk songwriting. His legacy rests not only on a single iconic anthem, but on decades of carefully crafted songs that chronicle ordinary lives with empathy and grace. With his distinctive fingerpicking style, warm tenor voice and unflinching eye for human stories, McTell has carved out a body of work that continues to resonate across generations.More than half a century after he first stepped onto the folk club stage, Ralph McTell remains what he has always been: a storyteller with a guitar, shining a quiet light on the corners of life others might overlook.

Dame Tracey Emin is BACK on The GWA Podcast! Hailed for her paintings, videos, textiles, neons, writing, sculptures, installations, and now, her extraordinary work as an educator, raising the next generation of artists at TKE Studios in Margate, right by where we are recording today – Emin has been at the forefront of art for more than four decades. Born in Croydon, and raised in Margate with her twin brother Paul, Emin had a complex child- and teenagehood, which she details in her part-memoir, Strangeland – as well as in works such as Why I Never Became a Dancer or Mad Tracey From Margate. Officially leaving school aged 15, Emin went to Maidstone College of Art, and onto the Royal College – where she won over her interviewees with her impressive sketch book selection. In 1993, she kept a shop in Brick Lane, titled “The Shop”, which ended with a party on her 30th birthday, and that year had her first exhibition – at a then-new gallery called White Cube. On view were objects she had collected over the years – from teenage diaries to toys, paintings, drawings and unsent letters. She titled it My Major Retrospective, just in case she never had another show. However, this was just the start. Emin has since exhibited all over the world – most recently the Yale Center for British Art, where I saw her work a floor above JMW Turner, getting me to realise the painterly relationship between the two artists – despite working 250 years apart – from how Emin plays with moods akin to his stormy weathers, to how the bodies in her paintings evoke his mountainous landscapes, with vein-like rivers. As well as Palazzo Strozzi, highlighting Emin's relationship to the history and iconography in Italian art – such as life, death and the crucifixion, to the decay of the body and enlightenment through spiritual (and sexual) quests. It challenged the city's history, revealing the rawness of a woman's perspective in a culture that so rarely addressed it. Now, we meet in Margate on the occasion of the largest – and perhaps the most important – exhibition in her life so far, “A Second Life” opening at Tate Modern on 27 February, in the very city where her artistic life thrived. But it's also a show taking place after monumental personal shifts, such as her mother's passing in 2016, surviving cancer in 2020, the opening of her free studio-based art school in 2023, but also when the world couldn't be more excited for Emin. She has said of this show to be a “true celebration of living” and I can't wait to find out more…

In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar sits down with Dave Pen of Archive to talk about Glass Minds — the band's 13th studio album and a bold new chapter in a 30-year journey defined by reinvention, collaboration and creative risk. Formed in Croydon, South London in 1994, Archive have evolved from trip-hop pioneers into one of Europe's most respected alternative collectives. Glass Minds, released Friday 27th February 2026 via Dangervisit through [PIAS], follows the ambitious 2022 triple-album Call to Arms & Angels, which charted Top 10 across Europe and culminated in their biggest headline show to date at Paris' Accor Arena. Produced by Archive alongside long-time collaborator Jerome Devoise, and recorded in Brighton, London and Paris, Glass Minds marks a shift toward a more minimal, down-tempo sound — built on space and emotional weight. New textures emerge through Essex rapper Jimmy Collins on "Heads Are Gonna Roll," while Lisa Mottram shines on the title track and "The Love The Light." At its core is the eight-minute "So Far From Losing You," one of the band's most personal and expansive pieces to date. In this conversation, Dave Pen reflects on joining Archive and becoming part of a true creative collective. He discusses the trust and experimentation that shape the band's process, the evolution of their sound over three decades, embracing AI in the album's visual identity, and why live performance remains the ultimate space where Archive's songs continue to grow and transform. Angela's hearty dish makes quite the impression! Tom Davis is an actor, comedian, podcaster, writer and proud south Londoner. Fresh from delivering the goody bag for Romesh Ranganathan, he settles in with us for a proper catch-up over a delicious pie. Tom's latest tour, Spudgun, sees him return to the comedy circuit after a period away from the stage. You'll have seen and heard from him plenty in that time, though, with acting credits including Wonka and A Thousand Blows plus TV appearances on shows including A League Of Their Own and, of course, his weekly podcast with Romesh, Wolf & Owl. Tom famously started out in comedy when he was working on building sites, but less is known about his time in the restaurant industry. He chats to us about his work in the kitchen, including a spell at The Connaught, which sadly didn't overlap with Angela's time there. The chat begins over sliced bread and a glass of Botivo with elderflower cordial and soda, before we hit the pie. Angela serves a steak pie, using a recipe by Diana Henry, with a gluten free version for Nick, all accompanied by a side of Savoy cabbage. The Waitrose wine experts have paired this meal with a glass of Norton Winemaker's Reserve Malbec. Tom knows his food and possesses some excellent eating credentials, none more so than his completion of The Big Five eating challenge, as well as his unwavering passion for bread and potatoes. We also hear the loveliest story about Olivia Colman, which is always an excellent way to spend your time. Now, pass the Croydon croutons! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and on Spotify. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes The recipe for steak pie was created for Waitrose by Diana Henry. Hello EICruisers! This week on the pod we're all over the map of pop culture, discussing everything from Brooklyn Beckham's tattoo cover-ups to cancelled RHONY stars to Taylor Swift's Croydon music video to France's open letter "reminding" 29-year-olds to have babies. We also get deeper into the newly released batch of Epstein files and discuss the fallout so far, how we're choosing to consume this news and why nobody can seem to easily frame this story. There's also some soul-searching to be had as the three of us ask... are WE performative? One commenter thought so after last week's episode. No hate to them (promise!) but it did make us think... where has this insult come from and what does it actually mean?Beth's been loving Schitt's Creek and a dognapping drama, Ruchira's been loving Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show and Oenone's been loving Industry and chatting to old men in Waterstones (more on her Substack here). Thanks so much for listening! If you've read this far could we pleeeeease be cheeky and ask for a rating, review or a share of the podcast on your socials? It really helps us grow and keep making EIC. Love you! This Week on Tales from the Time Between Times Tonight, by the low glow of the firepit at the heart of the forest, Owen Staton invites you to lay down the weight of the day and step softly into the dark. Let the world grow quiet. In the basement room of an East London flat one rainy January morning, Jack sat down with the Irish writer Rob Doyle to discuss the publication of his third novel, Cameo, and delve into his long and complex love for the work of Martin Amis.Rob chose to talk about London Fields, the novel we first encounter on this series through the Financial Times columnist, Janan Ganesh. But whereas Ganesh grew up in Croydon in the late Eighties, with the London Amis depicts in the novel practically on his doorstep, Doyle had never been to England's capital when the cover of London Fields first caught his eye, aged 23, from the shelves of a book exchange at a backpacker's hostel in South East Asia.On a long bus journey in this far-flung part of the world, Doyle recounts coming to terms with the alchemic mastery of Amis's prose in this 1989 masterpiece. London Fields, he says, blended seamlessly the very highest ideas with the very lowest, all to great comic effect. Writing about London, Amis was engaged in an act of philosophy, dredged up from the deepest pits of urban and human decay.Rob and Jack go on to discuss that force of nature that is of course Keith Talent. Talent is for Doyle, as he is for Ganesh, not just one of Amis's greatest characters, but one of the greatest characters ever to cast a shadow on the history of English literature. Of all Amis's beleaguered and benighted male creations, Talent is also arguably the happiest, since apart from anything else, he would be the least bothered by Amis's contempt for him. Later on, Rob and Jack talk about the world Amis so often condemns his male characters to live in. Whether we look to John Self (a man consumed by his own oniomania), the bleak rivalry that sets Keith Talent and Guy Clinch on their fateful course with Nicola Six, or indeed that which Richard Tull and Gwyn Barry must see through a novel later in The Information, Amis's men are rarely sanguine creatures.Male conflict and humiliation were two of Amis's greatest subjects, but while Doyle still regards Amis as one of the best writers ever to interrogate them in their art, he is less convinced by Amis's opposition outlook on male relationships now, in his forties, than he was as a younger man.Happy New Year to you, dear listener. 2026 has begun.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamisFIND US ON YOUTUBE Hosted on Acast. About our GuestJeri Jones Sparks is the Ministry Director of the Good News series, an evangelistic video resource aimed specifically at reaching South Asians. Her impactful work extends to her role as a strategic consultant for the Satya Network, which focuses on engaging and integrating South Asian Christians in Australia. Jeri is also an Outreach Minister at St James Anglican in Croydon, Sydney, an area with a substantial immigrant population. Born in Chennai, South India, Jeri and her family migrated to Australia when she was just four years old. Her journey and advocacy stand as a vital testament to cultural integration and spiritual transformation. Episode Summary: In the latest episode of "With All Due Respect," hosts Megan Powell du Toit and Michael Jensen dive into the complex and timely topic of immigration in Australia. This conversation couldn't be more pertinent as recent protests, the March for Australia, have stirred national debate about whether the country faces an immigration problem and how people, especially Christians, should respond. The discussion progresses to explore the nuanced aspects of immigration, including its impact on cultural identity, the rising presence of non-Christian faiths, and how statistics can often misrepresent the real picture, creating unwarranted fear and tension. Joining the conversation is Jeri Jones Sparks, a Tamil Indian Australian with an active ministry presence, who shares her experiences and insights on living as an immigrant and working within the church to foster intercultural understanding. The episode further highlights the gripping SBS series "The Secret DNA of Us," which unveils the hidden ethnic makeup of Australian towns. This, coupled with stories of individual ancestry, shines a light on Australia's multifaceted identity. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of religion, culture, and social policy. Key Takeaways: Immigration Debate: Recent protests have highlighted the complexity surrounding immigration in Australia, often fueled by misinformation and political agendas. Cultural and Religious Shifts: Australia's demographic changes bring both challenges and opportunities as the country navigates a more multicultural and religiously diverse population. Christian Response: The necessity for Christians to redefine what it means to engage with 'the other,' drawing from biblical examples of how to treat foreigners among us. Intercultural Church Dynamics: The importance of churches evolving towards interculturalism, incorporating various cultural perspectives to enhance community and belonging. Understanding Heritage: Emotional and personal journeys uncovering one's ancestry, as showcased in the SBS series, can redefine individual and communal identity. Notable Quotes: "We're not as good at estimating numbers or proportions. It all comes through filters of bias." — Megan Powell du Toit "I think there's going to be some kind of shift in our normal of engaging with cultural commentary." — Jeri Jones Sparks "It's really messy. There's going to be conflict. But there's something gospel-hearted in how it shapes our gathering." — Jeri Jones Sparks "The church has a lot to teach our society by modeling that kind of internationalism, that kind of welcome which is blind to race." — Michael Jensen "When we know that it's God who appoints where and when all people should live, who are the people that God has put around us?" — Jeri Jones Sparks Resources: Satya Network The Good News Series SBS TV Series: The Secret DNA of Us ABC Online article by Michael Jensen on immigration See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Merry Christmas Earthlings. Can we first apologise to anyone in Croydon who saw a bright star in the sky last night - before any local wise men (or women!) head to Boots to buy up any stocks of Myrrh - we can clarify that someone just temporarily leant on the cloaking device switch in the Alboreto. You'd think it would happen more frequently - but it hasn't happened for about 2000 of your Earth years. Anyway - onto our guest for this seasonal special - and we're thrilled to talk to the lexicography and etymology queen - Susie Dent It's a real treat - and our gift to you - a thank you if you've listened to the podcast at all this year. We do appreciate your loyalty. Have a Merry Christmas, and we'll be back in the New Year. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's time to visit Brighton....but only after we've been to Croydon first to chat with Crystal Palace supporter, tall man and bass player of Phinius Gage, Mr Mike Scott.Phinius Gage kept us entertained almost a quarter of a century ago with their skate-punk riffage and hectic touring schedule before calling it a day in 2007. But, now they're back!We talk about missing the P-Rock TV boat by moments, punk and metal interplay, crisps, your favourite bands playing right near your house, being sponsored by a vile drink and much more.Tom's joined by Jake off Los Fatso Libres who does an excellent job co-piloting.Songs this week are from: Dead Kennedys, Our Souls, Dogpiss, Crocodile God and The Muckaz.
We kicked off with some serious chocolate obsession, chatting about the glory of Cadbury milk bars and why Americans just can’t get the real deal. Then it was chaos on stage with Katy Steele taking a tumble in Perth and Miss Jamaica pulling a dramatic Miss Universe slip, while Miss Mexico strutted away with the crown. On the celeb front, we had Lewis Hamilton giving Beyoncé and Jay-Z a 200-mph thrill ride, Taylor Swift secretly filming a video in Croydon, and David Harbour possibly rekindling a romance in Canada. The internet delivered with sheep doing Backstreet Boys covers, while a private jet attendant spilled the insane rules of flying A-listers. And in between, we had Brendan, Kay, and Eddie sliding into the mailbag with Raining Diamonds, LEGO roses, and some very relatable drunken song choices.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Steve Roud is a Librarian, folklore scholar and creator of the Roud Folk Song Index, which contains upwards of 750,000 entries to around 45,000 English language folk songs, as found in books, recordings, manuscripts and other sources the world over. His index, and ‘Roud Numbers' (a numbering system employed to identify the same song across many different titles) are widely acclaimed for the scope, breadth, depth and impact. Steve worked as a local studies Librarian in the London Borough of Croydon, and also served as Honorary Librarian for the Folklore Society for eighteen years. He has published books on calendar custom, popular tradition, folk belief, London lore, children's games, and folk drama. In 2004, he was the winner of the Folklore Society's Katharine Briggs Folklore Award for The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland. In 2009, he was one of five people to be awarded the Gold Badge of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. This award recognises "those who have made unique or outstanding contributions to the art or science of folk dance, music or song, and/or those who have given exceptional support in furthering the aims of the Society”. For four years now, Steve has been visiting the NFC, parsing through our manuscript and book, broadside and pamphlet collections for entries to add to his index. He is an incredibly gifted, meticulous and generous scholar, who is always glad to share his expertise with us, particularly in discussion around the inherent problems in the description, cataloguing and indexing of folklore materials. It was an honour, and a great pleasure to host Steve at the NFC recently, and during his visit (for our collective benefit) I subjected him to a 75 minute interview, in which we discussed his index, the problems inherent in describing folk song, approaches to the cataloguing of folklore, conducting research in folklore archives, and the problems inherent in the digitisation of folklore records and some scholarly critique of the NFC's online platform Dúchas.ie. As a health warning for this episode - listeners (or viewers!) hoping to listen to scores of lovely ballads will be sorely disappointed, as our discussion essentially consists of nerding out about folklore indexes for over an hour. Steve's Folk Song Index can be found here, at the website of the Vaughan William's Memorial Library: https://www.efdss.org/vwml-catalogues-and-indexes/vwml-help/roud-indexes-help For a wonderful talk of Steve's at the Library of Congress, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVTMoN4Arvo My thanks especially to Veronica, Andrew and Dominic in UCD Communications, for their support of the podcast, and for filming this episode!
