Thank you so much to Patrick for commissioning this episode! So it looks like Al is going to come out on the other side of this, which I didn't really doubt but it was still tense to watch. I just love how the show has decided to sideline him while still using this as a character study instead of an excuse to get lazy with plotting. The way that everyone just hovers in the Gem waiting for something, anything to happen...it is really telling. I really can't imagine what the hell is going on with Miss Isringhausen, and does she actually know Silas from earlier or is she just busting in there with this bizarre story? Hey everyone! Thanks to Patrick for commissioning this episode, in which we have a new piece added to the chessboard. I'm so worried about Francis Wolcott, you guys. He's just really good at playing someone who has all of this simmering violence and rage right under the surface, and while he doesn't actually go off on any of the women in this particular episode it feels like it could happen at ANY second. The tension is unbelievable, and I'm dreading the moment it breaks. Also, in this episode we have the argument between Alma and Miss Isringhausen, which is super unpleasant. Alma is just kind of angry at the world in general and is taking it out on this poor woman who doesn't have any other prospects, and it's actually pretty gross. I hate seeing this side of Alma. It's an episode with several satisfying (mostly) Bechdel-test-passing scenes, as Jane and Joanie finally formally meet, Alma and Martha have a cryptic confrontation over their fraught circumstances, and Alma takes out her frustration on Miss Isringhausen. Meanwhile, the men converse with dogs and dead people, and the camp experiences the rare event of coming together in the thoroughfare for something other than an ass-kicking when Tom Nuttall takes on a challenge involving his new bicycle.

The moment of truth arrives with regards to Al's health, and it feels like it's not just his fate on the line, but that of Johnny, Dan, Trixie, and the Doc as well. As that group walks through fire together, Wolcott continues sinking his plans deeper into the camp alongside the newly-arrived county commissioner, E.B. botches another clever scam, and Miss Isringhausen reveals that she has a plot of her own.

The sixth episode of season 2 is one of the most memorable in the show's run, as Wolcott's sickness shows its true face. Miss Isringhausen also shows her true face, much to Adams' chagrin, but she makes it up to him. Also, Steve finds a novel answer to the indignities visited upon him, and Merrick is cockblocked by doodoo.
