To a generation of misfits not all that interested in what John Hughes was serving up in the ‘80s, writer-director Tim Hunter is a god. And his twin teen-movie testaments OVER THE EDGE and RIVER'S EDGE remain quotable sacred texts that serve as a secret language to communicate to other like-minded individuals that you too are a member of the anti-Breakfast Club. And in the land of television, he's a bona-fide legend — filling the director's chair on some of the greatest shows ever made: TWIN PEAKS, MAD MEN, BREAKING BAD, HOMICIDE, DEADWOOD and that's right, Gabe! He even directed the pilot of BEVERLY HILLS 90210. So how do you interview THAT?!? That's the kind of gravitas that turns Scott into something resembling an awestruck 12 year-old backstage at a Led Zeppelin concert in 1973. Or a 54 year-old talking to Tim Hunter via Zoom. At any rate — it was a thrill. PLUS!: The complete and total breakdown of WHAT'S THE BEST?!?

Emily Freitas joins the podcast while she’s about to give birth! We break down this amazing episode and I hope you enjoy it! Writer: B.W. Sandefur Director: Michael Landon In “Gold Country,” a two-part episode of Little House on the Prairie, relentless rain devastates the crops in Walnut Grove, prompting Charles Ingalls and Isaiah Edwards to seek fortune in a gold rush 400 miles away in Deadwood. Facing economic hardship, they convince their families to join the perilous journey. Upon arrival, they encounter inflated prices, scarce claims, and a rough town, eventually moving to Newton, 50 miles west. Initial optimism fades as they struggle to find gold, and tensions rise with dangerous prospectors. Tragedy strikes when Mr. Delano is killed over his gold, and Mr. Griffin desecrates a grave for riches, shaking the community. Disillusioned, Charles reflects in a heartfelt church speech, choosing family over wealth. The Ingalls and Edwards families abandon the gold chase, returning home with renewed values, passing hopeful newcomers on their way. 5 Best Quotes Charles: “There's nothing in the world that makes a man feel so bad as knowing there's just nothing he can do.” This captures Charles’ frustration and helplessness amid the rain-ruined crops, driving his decision to seek gold. Caroline: “Charles Ingalls, if you think I'm going to put up with having you underfoot around here for the next 6 months, you've got another thing coming.” A tender yet firm nudge from Caroline, showing her support for Charles' risky venture with love and humor. Isaiah: “I did this so we could get some flour or some bacon.” Isaiah's justification after gambling reflects his desperate intent to provide, despite Grace's skepticism. Charles: “I asked God to give me the strength to forget about it, to turn my back on it… and to let me take my family home.” In his church speech, Charles reveals his epiphany, prioritizing family over the fleeting promise of gold. Laura: “Ask him to please forgive me.” Laura's plea to Charles about Mr. Zachariah underscores her guilt and innocence after unintentionally causing harm. 5 Trivia Questions Question: What natural disaster forces Charles and Isaiah to consider leaving Walnut Grove? Answer: Relentless rain that destroys the crops. Question: How far is the gold rush location from Walnut Grove, as mentioned by Charles? Answer: 400 miles. Question: What item does Charles request at Nels' store that they are out of? Answer: Baking soda. Question: What tragic event involving Mr. Delano shifts the tone of the episode? Answer: He is killed by prospectors seeking his gold. Question: What does Charles ultimately decide to do after his church speech? Answer: Take his family back home to Walnut Grove. Gold Country originally aired on April 4, 1977 The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Send us a textWyatt Earp's transformation from faro dealer to legendary lawman unfolds through his pivotal years in Dodge City, Kansas. Fresh from his stint in Wichita, Earp arrived in 1876 with companion Celia Ann "Maddy" Blaylock and quickly secured a position as Deputy Marshal. His duties extended far beyond apprehending criminals to include mundane civic maintenance tasks that rarely make it into romanticized Western narratives. The podcast reveals fascinating gaps in Earp's documented history, particularly his 1877 venture to gold-rush Deadwood. Rather than prospecting, Earp's entrepreneurial instincts led him to establish a lucrative firewood business during the bitter Dakota winter, charging $12 per cord with desperate gamblers offering up to $50 during extreme conditions. This shrewd business acumen showcases a dimension of Earp seldom highlighted in traditional accounts.Perhaps most consequential was Earp's chance meeting with Doc Holliday while pursuing outlaw Dave Rudabaugh in Fort Griffin, Texas. This seemingly random encounter would forge one of the West's most famous partnerships. Upon returning to Dodge City as assistant marshal in 1878, Earp became embroiled in escalating tensions with Texas cowboys, culminating in the controversial shooting of George Hoy and a reported confrontation with notorious gunman Clay Allison. Surprisingly, contemporary accounts suggest Earp may have avoided direct confrontation with Allison's gang, contradicting later heroic narratives and highlighting the complex relationship between historical reality and Western mythology.Don't miss our upcoming interview with Peter Brand, acclaimed author of multiple works on Wyatt Earp and Tombstone. We think you'll really benefit from the things these people have to say. Sometimes we get a little scientific. We enjoy trying to come up with possible explanations for some of the things that the clients experience. But this by no means indicates that we do not believe the clients or are invalidating their experiences. We do believe. This episode was recorded on December 15, 2024 released on January 30, 2025. This week the ladies sit down with Timothy Olyphant! Timothy Olyphant is known for a wide range of film and television roles including the award winning shows “Deadwood” and “Justified”. We of course loved him as Dunder Mifflin's traveling salesman, Danny Cordray. Jenna, Angela and Timothy chat about his early days in show business and what it was like playing Danny and working on the set of “The Office”. We also ask Timothy the call sheet questions and Jenna and Timothy get into a discussion about bread making, (we might need a spin off podcast called Bread with Timothy). Angela reminds Timothy of a time they drank bourbon on Late Night with Conan O'Brien (she thought it was fakey bourbon, it was not). Timothy is an absolute delight, maybe we do need to take this show on the road! Look out Southwest terminal in Austin because "Office Ladies on the Road with Timothy" might be heading your way.

This week, in Yankton, South Dakota, the discovery of a headless, handless, footless woman, on top of the ice, in a small river ends a massive search for a woman who vanished. She was last seen by her boyfriend, who has a lot of brain damage, and literally hammers nails into wood, with his bare hands. He also went on a 600 mile adventure, to the same place where the woman's body was found, while she was missing! Coincidence, or horribly cold blooded murder??Along the way, we find out that frat boys maybe shouldn't write country songs, that it's actually physically possible to hammer nails with your hands, and that you don't cut the head off of a person that you didn't kill!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Author of over 50 books, Caroline Lawrence enters the Garden. While we discuss a lot of things, our focus is on Hermes (Mercury for the Romans). We get his origin story. Lawrence makes sense as to why Hermes is the God of so many seemingly disparate things. We venture into Troy and the Aenied, Joseph Campbell, and talk a little Lucifer and Odin. Hermes might be the Mapquest of Gods. Hopefully, we'll hear more from Caroline in the future on Gods, Aesops Fables, our mutual love of Deadwood, etc. An excerpt from Caroline Lawrence.comHi! I'm Caroline Lawrence and I write books for kids. I'm best known for my 17-book Roman Mysteries series (which was televised by the BBC in 2007 & 2008) but I have also written books set in the American Wild West and Ancient Greece. I love history, movies, London and the craft of writing. Click on the links to see more information about me, my books and my public appearances. Her newest book is "Pantheon:An Illustrated Handbook to the Greek Gods & Goddesses". I'm told there are heroes and monsters in there also.

This week's free story comes from the FIFTY: The Stars, the States, and the Stories collection. It's called "South Dakota: Trying to Do Some Good." Most people have heard of the rough-and-tumble Wild West character Calamity Jane and her gun toting, hard talking, men's clothes wearing reputation. But like many of the larger-than-life heroes and villains of the American West, the truth is much more subtle and complicated. For when an outbreak of smallpox threatens the gold rush town of Deadwood, South Dakota, it is not the doctor, or the marshal or even the care-taking women of the town that step forward to help, but Calamity Jane who sacrifices her own safety to be of service. Note: Though this is historical fiction and the characters have been developed to accommodate a story, their attributes and development may be useful as reference points and inspirations. If you enjoyed that story, there are hundreds and hundreds more where that came from. Try a Sparkle subscription now - for free.
