The Microsoft offices in downtown Houston initialized something in 2010 that its founders never intended to scale. Michael Farnum and his team triggered a regional conference with 120 attendees, built for the Texas cyber community. No grand ambitions. No national aspirations. Just a gathering for people who knew each other, wanted to learn together, and could afford to show up without corporate sponsorship covering a $2,700 entry fee.Meanwhile, Philip Wylie was running monthly meetups in Denton, traveling constantly, and discovering that building community meant something different than building an audience. The former professional wrestler turned pentester had launched DC940, authored bestselling books, and established himself as a global keynote speaker. But by fall 2024, the logistics became unsustainable. He stepped down from his DefCon group leadership role. That same night, walking away from the venue, an idea crystallized. The Dallas-Fort Worth area housed one of the world's largest cybersecurity communities, yet lacked a proper hacker conference. So Wylie sent a text message to Farnum. No expectations beyond advice. Within weeks, they had formalized a partnership that would bring CyberHackCon to the Plano Event Center, the same venue that hosted DalHackCon two decades earlier. What started as Houston's 15-year regional experiment had evolved into a national conference ecosystem. Companies were bypassing Black Hat and RSA entirely, sending whole teams to what was becoming CyberSecCon instead. The infrastructure now includes youth programs, executive events, OT-focused conferences, media arms, venture advisory, and nonprofit partnerships. Five full-time employees orchestrate an operation that refuses to gate its primary educational content behind paywalls, maintains community as the entry point for everything, and somehow preserves the feel of a high school reunion even as it approaches 400 attendees.TIMESTAMPS00:00 Building Community in Cybersecurity05:15 The Evolution of HusekCon to CyberSecCon12:00 The CyberSec Community Ecosystem20:14 Introducing Cyber Hack Con29:04 Call for Papers: Seeking Deep Tech Talks32:20 Engagement and Community Involvement33:44 Conference Experiences: Big vs. Small39:03 Post-Conference Content and Accessibility40:48 Creative Concepts: Cybersecurity-Themed Bar IdeasSYMLINKS[CyberSecCon] - https://www.cybrseccon.com/ Official website of CyberSecCon, a community-driven cybersecurity conference focused on accessibility, education, and bringing together professionals across all experience levels.[CyberSec Media] - https://www.cybrsecmedia.com/ Media platform that publishes cybersecurity talks, videos, and educational content from CyberSecCon and related community initiatives, available for free access.[DEF CON] - https://defcon.org/ One of the world's largest and most well-known hacker conferences, recognized for its deep technical content, hands-on learning, and strong hacker culture.[Michael Farnum – LinkedIn] - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mfarnum Professional profile of Michael Farnum, cybersecurity leader and co-founder of CyberSecCon, where he shares insights on community building and industry initiatives.[Phillip Wylie – LinkedIn] - https://www.linkedin.com/in/phillipwylie Professional profile of Phillip Wylie, penetration tester, instructor, and keynote speaker with extensive experience in cybersecurity and community mentorship.

Greg Farnum, Senior VP and General Manager at Audacious Inquiry, a PointClickCare company, brings expertise in health information exchange, public health, and health IT policy. Audacious is using AI to reduce administrative burdens and improve clinical workflows, facilitating data exchange, enhancing decision-making, and providing a better patient experience. Working with the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and other federal and state agencies, Audacious is developing tools to summarize lengthy test results, generate educational materials, and suggest relevant responses to public inquiries. Greg explains, "We have a full-stack engineering team, a managed services team, expertise in health IT policy and regulation, health IT standards, public health, and now artificial intelligence. So we work with ASTP (Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy), which is also known as the old ONCCDC, plus a bunch of other federal and state agencies, HIEs, and public health. We are part of PointClickCare, a leading health tech company with one simple mission -- to help providers deliver exceptional care across thousands of facilities." "ASTP has some really interesting challenges that are perfect for AI. They're dealing with some complex data analysis challenges and the creation of content for industry and the public. They also respond to thousands of public inquiries yearly. So we're helping them with all of those things and leveraging AI tools to do that." "I'll get a little more specific. Every year, hundreds of health IT organizations and developers submit these things they call testing results associated with their real-world test plans. But there's no standard format for this. So, ASTP staff have to manually read through each of these documents. And these are big documents. They can be 50 pages, they could be 200 pages, and the staff need to go through and figure out where the answers are to these specific questions. So we've built some AI tools that can read the entire document and automatically extract the answers using things like natural language processing and other AI components." #PointClickCare #AudaciousInquiry #AI #MedAI #ResponsibleAI #AdministrativeBurdens #DigitalHealth #Healthcare #HealthcareRegulation #ClinicianBurnout #Clinicians pointclickcare.com/audacious-inquiry Download the transcript here

Martin, Charles and Tyler begin their second day of work for Farnum. The mood of all the workers starts out upbeat. The old and new tracks are connected and the locomotive is nearly to the old railhead. A squabble among the workers reveals that Farnum has massively over-promised everyone's stake in the profits. The angry mob attack Farnum, leaving him bloody and unconscious. Too late, do they realize that Farnum was the only one who knew what to do. Is the railroad project doomed? The three men from Cheshire finally arrive in Lincoln. They confront Mr. Farnum about the danger they had to face. Rather than make their ordeal a waste of time, they renegotiate a deal -- one day of labor for a trailer full of wood. Farnum suggests that they might wish to revisit the original terms at the end of the day. The Hendrick brothers repair broken drag saws and create new rail spacers. While Tyler still thinks the railroad scheme is all a scam, the evidence of all the other people working argues that it is legit. Will they work another day for 5%, or will they go with just a trailer full of wood? Monthly members at Buy Me A Coffee, and patrons on Patreon, already know what happens next. Mr. Farnum visits the Hendricks' farm and is impressed with Charles' new gasifier-generator-welder. He tells of the need the Central Rail Collaborative has for a bigger welder and some of the the difficulties the CRC has faced thus far. Charles tries to finagle profitable terms in exchange for helping the CRC. To his and Martin's surprise, Farnum agrees to a rather generous deal. "That was too easy," Martin says. Devin Farnum and I connected on Instagram this past fall after he started listening to the Tom Sullivan series. This past December we finally found time to meet via zoom and chat about his golf story. Devin is in the process of making big life changes that are all built around golf. He's turned pro and heading for Hawk's Landing in Connecticut to teach. Most importantly though, he has the drive to compete as a professional and work his way to the highest ranks and play on the PGA Tour. __________________________________________________LINKS:IG: Baystate_GolfTwitter: BostonHomerWebsite: BayStateGolfSubscribe to my newsletter
A slight twist on the podcast today as I combine media and technology and chat with tech savvy Michael Farnum, Chief Techology Officer at Set Solutions, and the Founder/President of HOU.SEC.CON, the Houston area information security conference. This IT pro talks Network Security (staying safe on line); what you can do about spam calls and emails; the ongoing relationship between media and technology; patching, multi-factor authenication, vulnerabilities and open source; plus the future of AI and voiceovers (yup, the podcaster learned plenty in the interview - whew!) And for you media buffs, Michael dishes out which television dramas are tech accurate ('Mr. Robot' ) and which are sheer Hollywood; the double meaning of hackers; how he founded HOUSECCON, and why solving puzzles and picking locks may make you the next IT pro. So whether you're someone who knows all about tech, or if you're just learning about the computer scene, stay ahead of the game and join us!

Support the show (http://hatgiongtamhon.vn)

This episode shows how quickly a new product idea can turn into a successful business and the key steps in the process! When Amanda Farnum's kids were young, she wanted to take a break from her day job to spend time with them, but she didn't want to retreat from the business world completely. She thought long and hard about how to use her project planning skills and arts education to create a small business. The “a-ha” moment came on a family vacation, when she thought that tourist hotels could make art kits available for their guests. After an all-night brainstorming session with her husband, Amanda decided then that she would be the person to create those kits. Five months later, she was representing her paint-by-numbers designs professionally at craft shows. Her home-based business, Wehgo.com, skyrocketed from there. Amanda's success came from deep creative and organizational skills, a clear business plan, the discipline to execute that plan, a proprietary manufacturing process, and support from her business partner (her husband) as well as local networks of other entrepreneurs. Amanda discusses the growth of her company and some of its challenges and success milestones over the past five years—all the way up to the Washington Post article last week that spotlighted her business and spiked sales even more! She talks about the challenges of finding a name for her product, setting up the business, launching a website, selling on Etsy and Faire, displaying her wares in craft and trade shows, expanding her design portfolio, and moving into the world of wholesale to brick-and-mortar stores. She also talks about the role of her children in her business, seasonal planning, changes after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, her current personal and professional goals, and possible growth opportunities from here.
