Host Jason Blitman talks to Jonathan Van Ness and Julie Murphy (Let Them Stare) about astrology, the names of our teenage cars, and early inspirations for their book. And Crock Pots. And British accents. And Nobu. They talk about a lot. Jason is then joined by queer icon Alison Bechdel who shares what she's been reading and talks about her new graphic novel, Spent. When Julie isn't writing, she can be found watching movies so bad they're good, hunting for the perfect slice of cheese pizza, or planning her next great travel adventure. She is the author of the middle grade novels Dear Sweet Pea and Camp Sylvania as well as the young adult novels Ramona Blue, Side Effects May Vary, the Faith series, Pumpkin, Puddin', and Dumplin' (now a Netflix original film).Alison Bechdel's cult following for her early comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For expanded wildly for her family memoirs, the New York Times bestselling and Time magazine #1 Book of the Year graphic memoir Fun Home, adapted into a Tony Award–winning musical, and Are You My Mother? Perhaps you've been following Alison Bechdel's work since her comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” which invented the now ubiquitous Bechdel test (does a movie have two women who speak to each other about something other than a man?). Maybe you came to know her through her graphic memoir “Fun Home,” which was adapted into a Tony-award winning musical. Her latest comic novel, “Spent,” is a work of autofiction that grapples with and parodies Bechdel's own popularity. We'll talk with Bechdel about being famous in a world on fire— and the funny side of it, too. Guests: Alison Bechdel, graphic novelist and cartoonist, author of "Spent: A Comic Novel." Her previous books include "The Secret to Superhuman Strength" and "Fun Home," which was adapted into a Tony Award-winning musical. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Alison Bechdel rose to fame as the creator of a long-running alt-weekly comic strip before jumping to an even wider audience by way of her celebrated graphic memoirs “Fun Home” and “Are You My Mother?” Her new book, “Spent,” is a graphic novel — but it was originally meant to be another memoir, as Bechdel tells Gilbert Cruz on this week's podcast.“Over the years that I turned myself from being a comic strip writer into a memoirist, I got very sort of self-righteous about memoir as a genre,” Bechdel says. “I just thought, why would you bother making anything up? Life is incredible. It's all right there. It's served up on a platter every day. Write about that. My friends who are fiction writers would say, You're able to tell a deeper kind of truth with fiction, don't you think? And I would agree with them, but secretly I would think, no, you can't. You've got to tell the actual truth. But that does get really tiresome. It gets tiring." Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. #Uniradioinforma

As the old adage goes, "Well-behaved women seldom make history" and Tomb Raider takes that to a whole new level. Based on the popular late 90s action-adventure video games, Angelina Jolie plays the titular Lara Croft in these high-energy films released during the early 2000s. To help us unpack the early inspirations for this character and her initial film adaptations, we are joined by Egyptologist (and sometimes Lara Croft cosplayer), Dr. Marina Escolano-Povdeda. While these films definitely fail the Bechdel test, one must marvel at this cinematic world in which no one questions Lara's capabilities as a Tomb Raider. Even if she probably destroys more tombs than not, her importance as an icon for young girls and women who wanted to enter the male-dominated field of archaeology cannot be overstated. That's got to count for something, right? If you are interested in learning more about #RealArchaeology and the people who do it, be sure to check out https://real-archaeology.com/index.html. In this special episode, we move the discussion out of the Stardust Lounge and into the soulless void of a podcast studio... mostly to address the first three seasons' alcohol budget imbalance. We share our thoughts about the New York Times "Best Books of the 21st Century." A list which includes works by Alison Bechdel and Cormac McCarthy. (Does McCarthy PASS the Bechdel test? The answer will not surprise you.) We talk a lot about the books we've read, admit to the books we shamefully have not, and nitpick the list based on odd, arbitrary fixations we've developed over years of reading books and then podcasting about them... but by now you would expect nothing less.

Just how dangerous is traveling with the Doctor? It's a fair question after revisiting The Girl Who Waited, which looks surprisingly dark 13 years after it aired — especially now that many who watched it back then are now closer in age to older Amy Pond. In our final character episode of this season, we put Carrie from Sex and the City on the couch. Nemone looks at why Sex and the City hasn't aged well, and Ben talks about diversity in the privileged, white world of the show. We get into Carrie's shopping habit, low self-esteem, and why everyone in the show is SO obsessed with relationships, even though the women really have no need for them. We also get a primer on the Bechdel test, and how you can tell if a show is sexist without knowing it. And if you want to check out more on the patriarchy and diversity, have a listen to our episodes on Sydney from The Bear. Despite my appreciation for Yorgos Lanthimos' earlier work, I was not planning on seeing Poor Things. A lot of my feminist friends were not fans and I figured I could skip it. But then I learned that Kathryn Hunter was in it, playing a madam, and I got curious. (I worked with Kathryn on a show in London a while ago so she's very dear to me.) So I watched it. Apparently there was a whole conversation around whether or not this was a feminist film. (Answer: not.) But it is, as my friend said, some men's idea of a feminist film. Which is really not the same. This is not to say that men can't make feminist films. If Lanthimos made a bio pic of Gloria Steinem, maybe that would be a feminist film. (Though maybe not if he chose to focus exclusively on her relationships with men or only her Playboy bunny stunt but otherwise it would be hard to NOT make a feminist film about Steinem.) But while this film may pass the Bechdel test on a technicality (I think the conversation between Emma Stone and Kathryn Hunter was longer than thirty seconds and not about A man – it was about how to service men so… ) I'm not sure I'd give it the point. A film in which a woman is largely on her own in the world of men does not scratch any feminist itch of mine. Women working toward equality and the benefit of other women is the main criteria for that as far as I'm concerned. Fun fact about our guest Blake Berlin - he's been kidnapped and tortured by Andrea and Devin! For a film of course. Blake is our brilliant actor and writer friend, who produced his first feature this year! Blake picked the iconic, incomparable action-adventure-romance-horror film - the amazing 1999 “The Mummy.” We talk about our deep love of this film, how it's a feminist film that does not pass the Bechdel test, the comedic genius of Rachel Weisz and all the ways this film still holds up and impresses us! We were so excited to talk about this movie with Blake, especially considering this May is it's 25th anniversary! Our women in film history was finally the thing we kept wondering if we would accidentally do - we picked the same person! We talk about Aziza Amir, who is hailed as the founder and godmother of Egyptian cinema, and is considered Egypt's first female film actress and producer, blazing a trail not only for Arab women but Egyptian filmmakers all around! Follow Blake on IMDb and instagram @itsblakeberlin, especially right now as his film “Instead,” which he wrote and produced and starred in AND directed, is hitting the festival circuit starting this weekend on April 28th! Welcome to Filmmaking (Actually)! This episode is excerpted from a panel where Koura sat down for an interview discussing the latest Space Dream Productions film project, called The Heist -- which is available to watch right now for free on the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge YouTube channel -- with Dr. Stephanie Van on her YouTube channel This Ability Clinic. Koura Linda is the director and star of “The Heist,” a short film created for the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge of 2024, which tasked filmmakers with making a short film from start to finish in a WEEK. Koura shares her experience collaborating with a team of disabled filmmakers to create a buddy comedy where half the dialogue is in ASL and the entire film passes the Bechdel test. Dr. Van is an interventional pain management specialist, double board certified in pain management and physical medicine and rehabilitation, and an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she promotes disability-conscious healthcare education for every body. If you have any questions or comments for Koura or any of our other guests, please reach out to us at filmmakingactually@gmail.com. And if you're passionate about creating meaningful films and want to connect with like-minded filmmakers, check out patreon.com/spacedreamfilms. In the works is a film I've been looking for my entire life -- a climate romcom. And it couldn't be in better hands. In this episode, I talk with Kim Steele, a narrative climate storyteller with an amazing background in acting, filmmaking, and Broadway theater. We talk about utilizing LinkedIn for filmmaking connections (who knew?!); the transition from Broadway; the importance of climate films -- but in an engaging way and the need for a Bechdel test for climate; the benefits of seeking nontraditional financing in indie films; filmmaking in Georgia and the value of networking laterally; and what's next for this trailblazer in filmmaking.I'll spoil it: the climate romcom...and I can't wait.Kim's Indie Filmmaker Highlight: Yellow Dot Studios (https://yellowdotstudios.com/)Links:Kim Steele's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/heykimsteele/)"Now There's a Bechdel Test for Climate Change in Film" https://www.indiewire.com/news/business/bechdel-test-climate-change-film-good-energy-1234958880/)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
We've made it to our anniversary episode. Debaser is officially one year old this week, and to celebrate, we are covering a beloved movie that both Will & Jared love dearly: The auteur directed, big budget, live-action, kaiju mecha film of their dreams: Pacific Rim!Does Pacific Rim live up to our memories, over a decade after release? Do we even acknowledge the sequel? Who would we each choose to replace Charlie Hunnam? Does Pacific Rim pass the Bechdel test? Does Will make a joke at the end of the show that puts the entire podcast in jeopardy?! Listen to find out!Did you know that 90% of podcasts stop after three episodes? The following 90% of podcasts that publish more than that stop after twenty episodes. Debaser is now 52 episodes old, placing in the 1% of podcasts. We couldn't have made it here without you, thank you. You may have heard Alison Bechdel's name from the feminist film tool, the Bechdel test, or through her memoir turned Tony-award-winning Broadway musical called Fun Home. But even before those achievements, Bechdel wove herself into the fabric of lesbian cultural identity when she started publishing her comic strip 'Dykes to Watch Out For' in Minneapolis back in 1983. And the strip had gained a worldwide cult following for its game-changing portrayal of American queer life. It went on hiatus in 2008 but is still getting attention to this day.Alison Bechdel is a MacArthur Genius Award recipient and the author of a New York Times best-selling graphic memoir. Next week on March 4th, she'll be coming back home to speak at St. Thomas University as the Luann Dummer Center for Women, Women's History Month Speaker. We revisit a conversation from 2022, when she sat down with MPR News producer Ellen Finn to look back at the roots of her work in Minnesota.
We could see record-breaking warmth today, we're talking 60 degrees in February. Is this the end of Minnesota winter? We could see some snow tomorrow, but one resort owner is pulling the plug on ice fishing season. What is the impact of this warm winter on Minnesota's migratory birds? We'll talk to a local climate expert. And our resident doctor is back for another edition of Vital Signs. We get his opinion on changing COVID isolation guidelines and measles cases that have popped up in Minnesota. Plus, she's known for the Bechdel test, but Minnesota native Alison Bechdel also made her mark as a cartoonist. More than 40 years later, she'll be home sharing her story.

This week we are entering virtual reality to kick some virtual ass while we discuss “First Person Shooter”. Note the lack of an exclamation mark. We're ready to be true haters this week. We talk how the term “male gaze” was probably invented to describe this episode, puzzle over the Venn diagram of Euro-goons and cyber trash, advocate for Gillian Anderson getting a big spray bottle for the rest of the crew this time, how this episode wants to be “Basic Instinct” so bad, how unsettling (in a bad way) it is to watch a bunch of grown men salivating over women like this, and how this episode shockingly passes the Bechdel test. We leave room for levity as we clown on Mulder's little gaming outfit, wonder if Chris Carter was mad at David Duchovny and that's why the episode is like this, discover they had to shock David Duchovny to put on the suit, and just shake our heads at how out of character everyone is. But the one thing we did learn from this episode that we can all take with us: Scully with a big gun IS feminism. That's just facts.Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!
This week we're checking out a podcast that explains whether or not you're allowed to like certain movies and TV shows. Have you ever wondered whether or not Gremlins passes the Bechdel test? You haven't? What's wrong with you?? Tab Birt joins the show to explain how Anita Sarkeesian tried to ruin video games and Jerry hangs out in studio with us. After learning nothing about Gremlins, Anthony Cumia and Missy B join the show to witness John getting pranked and freaking out on his poor mother. Also, we wrap up the holiday song parody contest and crown a winner (or two). As much as we enjoyed seeing Freddie Prince Jr. and Matthew Lillard in this spiritual prequel to the live action Scooby Doo movie, it wasn't super interesting. But we did get very hype about the cat people! Until we saw them. I think this one passed the Bechdel test tho, so, we're moving up! Welcome to Video Game Movie Hell! Every other week, Nirav, Felicia, and Jess are traveling through time via the stupidest time machine ever by watching every video game adaptation in chronological order. Silvana and Tegan watch Season 3 Episode 20 "Maternal Instinct" - an episode which is ironically extremely lacking in focus on women. It doesn't even pass the Bechdel test! The SGC get an unexpected visit from Bra'tac and a gravely injured Jaffa reporting that Apophis is back and attacking Chulak looking for the Harsesis child. Luckily Daniel has been keeping his promise to Sha're and looking for Kheb this whole time right? Wrong! We encounter Oma Desala for the first time but she only speaks and acts through a male monk on the planet. Sam Carter is sidelined and Silvana and Tegan rewrite the episode and Sam is now taking a vacation with her girlfriend, Janet Fraiser. This episode could have been so much better if prior seasons had taken the direction of Teal'c and Shak'l forming a rebel alliance together. As it is, Bra'tac is the star of this episode, and Silvana and Tegan wish there had been more exploration of what Kheb means to elderly Jaffa and what's next for Bra'tac. The music we listen to in our youth stamps an imprint on our souls, whether we want it to or not. So, Hillary, Meredith, and Ann are heading back to the 90s to revisit some of the (mostly) one-hit wonders that still live in the recesses of our brains. Mediocre musicianship, uninspired composition, and narrow vocal range aside, these tunes are catchy, y'all. Which song (surprisingly) passes the Bechdel test? Whose parents schlepped her to two mediocre concerts in two days? Which Audrey Hepburn classic was actually the inspiration for a radio juggernaut? Plus, an OJ update, palm tree hair, and Wilford Brimley-related trauma.TSHE Recommends: You Are So Not Invited to My Bat MitzvahConnect with the show! This is your show, too. Kim and Ket Stay Alive... Maybe: A Horror Movie Comedy Podcast
Kim, Ket AND, most importantly, Arik were all down for the count, healthwise, this week. So the girls took another trip down memory lane and are bringing you a throwback all the way back to episode 25, where we learn who first threatened who with having them replaced with a Ghost Host... Ket tells Kim about Annihilation starring Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Ket will educate Kim on what she's been missing in terms of the hotness that is Oscar Isaac. They'll both educate all of you on the Bechdel Test. And THEY'LL be educated on tentacle blood and jurassic bear skull monsters. And all of YOU will educate Kim and Ket on where the quote “We're all a little crazy” came from. Most importantly, we'll learn if Kim will live or die in Annihilation. Dir.
