Today's fascinating episode features singer, songwriter and guitarist, Miki Berenyi.In 1987, Miki met Emma Anderson, a previous guest on Synthetic Dreams and formed the band, Lush. The group went on to release three critically acclaimed albums on legendary record label, 4AD. The band officially split in 1996, but reformed for a series of well received live shows in 2016.In 2018, Miki formed a new band called, Piroshka, which featured her partner Kevin McKillop (aka Moose) Micheal Conroy and former Elastica drummer, Justin Welch. The group released two albums on the always excellent Bella Union label.Miki's memoir Fingers Crossed, was published by Nine Eight Books In September 2022. It's extremely well written, funny, and, in parts, very moving - well worth a read. In recent years, Miki has been recording and playing shows as part of the Miki Berenyi Trio, which features Moose and guitarist Oliver Cherer. Interview with Karen and Don Peris of Innocence Mission. The first studio album from the innocence mission in four years, Midwinter Swimmers sounds immediately like an old friend. At the same time, it's a new kind of adventure for the beloved Pennsylvania band of high school friends Karen Peris, Don Peris, and Mike Bitts, having both an expansive, cinematic quality and the strange, lo-fi beauty of a newly discovered vintage folk/pop album, brimming with melody. Midwinter Swimmers is being released November 29 by Therese Records in North America, Bella Union in the U.K. and PVine in Japan. “It's like it was recorded at Western Electric in the 60's, and makes me think of Vashti Bunyan or Sibylle Baier, but also has these emotional bursts of orchestration and drums and harmony coming in - the sound of the innocence mission never stops getting richer”, writes one early listener and friend. Lead single and album opening song ‘This Thread Is a Green Street' is a perfect entrance into the innocence mission's sound and sensibility. Karen Peris describes it as “a sort of envisioning the landscape as a world of doorways, that might allow us to locate memory or to be nearer in some way to people we miss. And the transportive quality of scenes we might come upon in the natural world, or even in everyday objects- a sewing thread when I'm mending something could remind me of a street map. One of the things about recording it was, how to find this feeling inside the sound, and how to find the half-remembered beauty of sing-alongs of our 1970's childhoods. There's a search in recording that goes on being elusive, in a good way.” ‘This Thread...' is the first of a trio of songs on the new album (the second being the title song) about missing a loved one who is away, and of how love can transcend distance, Karen says. Piano melodies and high electric with strummed nylon string guitars make a glimmery soundtrack for ‘Midwinter Swimmers', a happy-sad song of hopefulness about seeing an absent loved one soon. It takes place during an instant when swimmers seen at a distance through tears are refracted and appear as something beautiful and moving. Something of this feeling is echoed in the recording, made with a spontaneity and a sense of trying to capture a single moment and hold it up to the light. This attentiveness to small detail typifies the way the innocence mission's songs look closely at everyday moments as miraculous worlds of their own. Karen's words stand on their own as poetry, with a particular sense of place and color, of the visual, that communicate universal experiences of change and loss, and of love, hope, and gratitude. Walking is a recurrent happening in Peris' songs, as she finds herself taking walks on most days of the year, and looking up into trees, which continue to be another feature of her lyrics. In one verse of closing song ‘A Different Day', she relates a favorite sycamore tree to an imaginary appaloosa horse that she might ride to visit a friend, underlining her hope that she could be made into a stronger, more courageous person who is without anxiety. This same hope of personal transformation is present in ‘Orange of the Westering Sun', which recalls being in California to record the innocence mission's first two albums. “This was at Joni Mitchell's house, and the air always smelled like lilies so it became Easter-like, which may have been one of the reasons that there was the feeling of being at the start of something”, Karen remembers. (In a full-circle experience, Karen, whose first favorite song at five years old was ‘Both Sides Now' was invited by Joni to sing on her album Night Ride Home, an honor she treasures.) On the opposite US coast, a favorite place visited by the Peris family called Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth is the setting of the dynamic and ambient ‘The Camera Divides the Coast of Maine'. Karen explains the song is “thinking about the nature of place in regard to time - when we think of going back, is it as if to visit an earlier time in our lives? I often think of the Ivan Lalic poem that says something like: Is this a street or years?” Here, and throughout the album, there is a palpable emotion inherent in Karen's voice, and in the distinctive combination of Don's luminous, high electric guitar lines with Karen's low (baritone and nylon string), rhythmic guitar and piano playing. Their longtime friend Mike Bitts adds a further dimension of upright and electric bass. ‘There is a companionship about Karen's voice,' Don Peris says, ‘and a realistic joy and gratitude, in the midst of life's difficulties, that she is expressing here on songs like ‘Sisters and Brothers'. For this episode we're joined by the admirable Simon Raymonde, sometime Cocteau Twin, head honcho at Bella Union Records and author of the autobiographical In One Ear. We commence by asking our guest about growing up as the son of the legendary Ivor Raymonde, string arranger on umpteen hits by pop idols from Billy Fury to the Walker Brothers. We hear clips from Ira Robbins' 1989 audio interview with Raymonde Sr.'s most famous client Dusty Springfield — and discuss a Ray Connolly piece from 1970 in which she more or less outs herself as gay. Simon then talks about his days behind the counter at Beggars Banquet Records and how they led to his joining the Cocteaus in 1984. Clips from a 1996 audio interview with the trio prompt his reflections on writing and performing with Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser — and how their extraordinary music won the admiration of everyone from Prince to Jeff Buckley. Simon also recalls the fallout from leaving indie sanctuary 4AD for major-label Fontana. Esta semana, dedicamos la sesión de Rebelión Sónica, a la importante banda estadounidense de avant-pop Mercury Rev, con música de su nuevo álbum “Born Horses” y del celebrado “Deserter's Songs” de 1998. “Born Horses” fue lanzado el 06 de septiembre por el sello Bella Union y es primer LP del grupo con canciones inéditas desde “The Light in You” de 2015, pues su anterior trabajo “Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete Revisited”, es de covers de la legendaria cantante estadounidense. El miembro original Jonathan Donohue dijo sobre el álbum: “Desde nuestro comienzo a mediados de los 80 con David Baker hasta la grabación de “Born Horses” con los nuevos miembros permanentes, el pianista nativo de Woodstock Jesse Chandler y la tecladista austríaca Marion Genser, hemos celebrado la confianza tácita en la "estatua que ya está dentro del mármol". TV and Radio presenter, and former record company executive, Nicki Chapman goes head to head in a war of the words with producer, musician and label owner, Simon Raymonde.On this episode of Book Off we delve into two music memoirs, covering two very sides of the music industry and history, but that both have a lot in common. Simon was one third of the band Cocteau Twins between 1983 and 1997, and owns and runs the Bella Union label. As well as having his own successful music career as a musician and a producer, he has signed and worked with artists such as Fleet Foxes, Dirty Three, Midlake, Mercury Rev, John Grant, BC Camplight, Laura Viers and Flaming Lips. In this very honest and open conversation, he talks about the tumour on his brain which has effected his hearing, the influence of his father (Ivor Raymonde) on his career without knowing it, the break up of Cocteau Twins and how his label is still going strong more than 25 years later. Nicki worked at MCA and RCA records in the 90s in the promotions department, before going out on her own. Over her career, she has worked with many artists including Phil Collins, David Bowie, Kylie, M People, Annie Lennonx, Prince, Take That, Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper, Spice Girls and Liza Minelli. Nicki's book is swimming in 90s nostalgia (music, fashion, tabloids). She too shares her own personal account of having a brain tumour, which inspired her to want to write the book, as well as lots of stories from her time in the music industry. Originally from Buchanan, Michigan, John moved to Germany in 1988 to study German, but eventually moved back to the States, where he formed the band The Czars, who released seven albums in the 12 years they were together. After a four-year hiatus, John began making music again under his own name, and the five albums he's recorded since have garnered both critical praise and commercial success. In 2013, John moved to Iceland, where he works as a translator, and just last week Creep Show, John's collaboration with the synth group Wrangler, released their second album Yawning Abyss on Bella Union! In episode 54 I talk to Billy Nomates about BC Camplight, an American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His 2005 album Hide, Run Away was released by One Little Indian and featured Cynthia G. Mason on vocals. Camplight's follow up, Blink of a Nihilist, was released in 2007. The third album came out in January 2015 on Bella Union. Christinzio's later lyrics regularly explore his personal life and self-destructive tendencies, including struggles with depression and alcohol.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Karl Blau. Originally from Samish Island, WA, Karl grew up in a family of amatuer musicians and at first thought he was going to be a fine artist. But by the end of high school, Karl was all in on music, and his band Captain Fathom began playing in Anacortes. It was there he met Beat Happening's Bret Lunsford and a pre-Microphones/Mount Eerie Phil Elvrum and they formed the band D+. Being part of the Anacortes music scene eventually led Karl to joining Laura Veirs' band, to working at K Records' Dub Narcotic Studios, and to write and record dozens of albums of his own since the late '90s, which were released on labels like Lunsford's Knw-Yr-Own, K Records, Bella Union, and though Karl's own recording series Kelp! Penelope Isles - Play It Cool (Alt Mix) - a 2022 single on Bella Union. It's a family affair for Penelope Isles, the sibling songwriting duo of Lily and Jack Wolter, who have channeled the energy of their UK homeland the Isle of Man for some seriously dreamy sounds over the course of two records. Now based in Brighton, their latest record, 2021's Which Way To Happy, sees the band recruit the help of Henry Nicholson, Joe Taylor, and Hannah Feenstra to fill out their expansive soundscapes for an intoxicating leap forward. Still, a lot of those sounds aren't exactly accurate to what the band is playing on tour which is why they decided to re-imagine a few of those songs and release them as alternate mixes. Our Song of the Day (and third from Penelope Isles) is the alternate mix of stand-out track “Play It Cool.” Slightly stripped down but no less gorgeous, bouncy, and effervescent, the song only builds excitement to see the band deliver the songs on stage. This is what they had to say about the single: “We have been working on how to re-imagine songs from Which Way To Happy for our festival shows this summer…. Play It Cool seemed to fall into place a lot easier than others… maybe because we stripped a lot of things away that are in the album version, so we felt that it would be ‘cool' to re-mix and create an alternative version, where the arrangement and sonics are more like how we are doing it live. Everything is pretty hard panned in the stereo mix, so the drums are on one side and the bass on the other. It's kind of fun to pan to one side and isolate things. Inspired by those early Byrds and Beatles mixes.” Penelope Isles is currently on tour behind Which Way To Happy but, unfortunately, currently solely in Europe and the UK.
