Canyons, whether large or small, can host a spectacular variety of birds! Consider Swakane Canyon, in central Washington State. It cuts west from the Columbia River into the Entiat Mountains for nine miles, while gaining nearly 3,000 feet. Steep slopes wall in the canyon floor, several hundred yards wide. A slender creek runs through the canyon, nurturing shrubs like blue elderberry. The plant provides nesting cover for Bullock's Orioles and other birds in summer, and masses of tiny fruit to migrating birds in September. And each successive habitat embraces a new mix of birds and other wildlife.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Building a Farm Model with a Regenerative VisionIn This Podcast: Dave Boehnlein studied natural resources and environmental studies at the University of Minnesota which lead him to becoming an educator and leader in permaculture design and implementation. He co-authored the book 'Practical Permaculture' and is now leading a project called Rooted Northwest, a co-housing and regenerative agriculture community in Arlington, Washington. This project aims to combine farmland preservation, community living, and education using a permaculture approach. Rooted Northwest is currently looking for home buyers and social impact investors to join the initiative and help support their mission. Our Guest: Dave Boehnlein is originally from Wisconsin and found his way to Washington State to learn about permaculture. Now he's a leader in both permaculture design and education having co-authored the book Practical Permaculture while teaching at Bastyr University and other institutions. When learning about permaculture, he lived at the Bullock's Permaculture Homestead and got to experience education in both land care and community living. That's a huge part of his reason for being involved with building Rooted Northwest. He's super excited to work on regenerative agriculture projects by day and then share meals and play cribbage in the evening!Dave's Book - Practical PermacultureDave's Book Recommendation - The Transition HandbookContact Dave for more information about Rooted NW - RootedNW.orgVisit UrbanFarm.org/RootedNW for the show notes and links on this episode! There's no Top 5 this time around – instead, it's all about Helen Mirren, Kate Beckinsale, Kevin Spacey, Jason Statham, and Sandra Bullock, with a war film classic anchoring the episode: Full Metal Jacket.

This is episode 232 - Diamond Geology as an Art, Dinosaur Veldskoene and Waterboer's claim Just a quick note about that amazing podcaster Nicole Engelbrecht —She is the host & creator of True Crime South Africa and the author of Samurai Sword Murder, Sizzlers, and co-author of Killer Stories. Well now there's another book in her growing body of work called Bare Bones, Cold Cases from True Crime South Africa as part of the Jonathan Ball stable. I've been given view of an advanced copy and its chilling — perfect to read on a frozen winter's night in front of a fire. Right. 1870. By the start of the year there were about 1000 diggers near the Vaal River, hunting diamonds, at the end of that year the number had risen ten to 10 000. They made their way to the area from around the world, once landing in Cape Town or Algoa Bay, and some in Durban, they'd travel up to the river diggings taking two months, or six weeks if they were lucky. Once there, they'd set up camp, pitching tents, building little shanties, or living in their wagons. These global prospectors first headed for the largest of these camps - a place called Klipdrift, which eventually became the town of Barkley West, about 35 kilometers north west of Kimberley. The new Eldorado as it was being called saw men dressed in what was called a proper digger's outfit. This consisted of a broad-brimmed hat, a corduroy suit, a stout waste belt with pockets all around, extra strong boots, a bowie knife, a revolver, and spare rounds of ammunition. They'd have to secure their seat from the ports to the dry uplands, preferably in a Bullock-wagon or some in the Cape Scotchcart, drawn by horses. They were riding shotgun or at the back along with around three tonnes of goods consigned to the camps because everything had to be transported in. There was virtually no local food available, even water had to be carted from higher up the Vaal. It took forty days to trek to the diggings, with many holdups including a fairly lengthy delay at Bethulie in order to cross the mighty Orange River. The River diggings stretched about 40 kilometres west and northwest towards Delportspoort. The rush to gather alluvial diamonds along the rivers had begun along both banks of the Vaal River. The rise and fall of this important waterway had washed thousands of these gems onto the surface in channels — both current and ancient. So who owned that land? Griqualand West Captain Nicholas Waterboer believed it was his. The Griquas here were uneasily exposed in a salient of territory, a kind of peninsular on a map, projecting into the Orange Free State, across the Vaal River, and to the west, abutting the Tswana Territories of the Kalahari. The diamond discoveries sent shockwaves through every corner of South African life, with the sciences feeling the first jolt. Geology and mineralogy suddenly mattered in a way they hadn't before, as men sought to read the land for clues to its hidden riches. But at the root of it all lay something deeply human — an eternal hunger for instant treasure. It's the same impulse that drives a gambler to scratch a card or chase a lottery win, that rush of endorphins when chance seems to offer everything. Or when a pan yields a diamond worth thousands.

This week's episode is a bit different—and one of the most fascinating we've ever done. Our guest didn't come to share her story, but the story she uncovered. After listening to a past episode of the Paragould Podcast, Julie Wilkins became captivated by the case of Leroy Bullock, the man convicted of brutally murdering Dr. and Mrs. Jones on December 13, 1988—a day that just so happened to fall on a Tuesday, not a Friday... but the tragedy was chilling all the same. Through months of independent research—what she calls her own “Making a Murderer” project—she uncovered details that had been lost to time, including a conversation with one of Bullock's sons. What she found was a deeply broken family tree—a father who was a career criminal, four out of five siblings who were also involved in crime, and a long trail of violence, petty theft, and even prison breaks. It's a sobering look at how generational brokenness can shape a life—and how some stories go deeper than headlines ever show.

It was only in 1939 that this Altamira Oriole was first found north of the Rio Grande River. Now it happily visits residents on the Texas side of the river, especially where a juicy orange half waits in a backyard feeder. Northerly breeding orioles, like Bullock's in the West and the Baltimore in the East, nest as far north as Canada, but winter mostly in Central America. The message from Sunday.
The environmental recording for Oak Island Rain Soundwalk was recorded April 30th 2024. It's a really gentle soundscape; dewy and hushed. I chose this photo for the cover because, if you look closely, it captures the fine rain drops that fell that morning. It's hard to take a picture of rain. I got lucky here. I've gave Oak Island quite a bit of attention last year, initially surveying the soundscape without ornamentation:Later, I visited the spur road that leads to the area in the winter, basking in the sound of skeins of geese overhead and croaking Sandhill Cranes foraging in fallow fields. Finally, I used a recording made peering in the heart of the 100 acre Oak Savanna preserved at Oak Island for my sophomore Listening Spot effort: So we're back, and even though it captures an out-of-season sound for this part of the world, I thought it might be a soothing addition for summer programming. The weather here in the Pacific Northwest has been idyllic. Meanwhile, headlines land in my news feed about heat waves on the US East Coast and in Europe. If you're feeling the heat, this one goes out to you.In this season of open windows and being outside, our cities become a little noisier. Sometimes that can be exciting Sometimes it can be unwanted. I make no pretenses about what my soundwalks are for, what purpose they serve, but if this one can quell any thirst for peace, quiet, and tenderness out there, I'm all for it.In this landscape we hear migratory Bullock's Oriole, Rufous Hummingbird, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Tanager, Purple Finch, Tree Swallow, Black-headed Grosbeak, Savannah Sparrow, Red-wing Blackbird... The interesting thing is they are all singing lowkey, as the kids say, as in quietly. The rain seems to have a subduing effect. Thanks for listening and reading! I'm making this one available in its entirety here on Substack, because I think there is probably someone new-to-me it could be useful to. If you enjoy what you hear, please consider telling just one person about it. As per usual, Oak Island Rain Soundwalk is available on all music streaming services today, July 4, 2025, Happy Independence Day! This is a public episode. Karah Perkins-Potter Shooting – The Clay Edwards Show, Episode 1,010 I'm gutted to share the tragic news of Karah Perkins-Potter's death, a 23-year-old woman shot and killed at a Fast Fuel gas station on Northside Drive in Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday morning, June 22, 2025. As the granddaughter of a local civil rights activist, Karah's loss hits deep. According to her family, she was trying to protect a friend from an alleged domestic violence situation when the friend's boyfriend, Phillip Bullock, showed up. I'm told Karah stepped in, urging her friend to leave with her instead of the boyfriend, who reportedly grew enraged. A tussle followed, and Bullock allegedly shot Karah in the head, killing her. This senseless act infuriates me—what kind of weak man shoots a young woman trying to help someone? I see it as pure culture rot, a failure to control emotions that's tearing at Jackson's soul. Karah was intelligent, selfless, and had a bright future, checking all the same boxes as a young lady I interviewed just a day before, who I prayed would avoid this exact kind of violence. Capitol Police have made an arrest, and Bullock, who lives two doors down from Karah, is out on bail, which her family finds outrageous. I'm skeptical of the “civil rights leader” label thrown around—nobody's civil rights are in jeopardy in 2025 except maybe conservative straight men—but that doesn't diminish the tragedy. My heart goes out to Karah's parents, Joni and her father, who are reeling from this loss. I'm calling for the community to reflect and address the violence within, as it's always the same folks causing the pain.
In the wake of controversy over OpenAI's restrictive nondisclosure agreements, a bipartisan group of senators has introduced the AI Whistleblower Protection Act. In this episode, Lawfare Research Director Alan Rozenshtein spoke with Charlie Bullock, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Law & AI and co-author of a new Lawfare article on the bill, about its key provisions. They discuss why this bill is an important, light-touch proposal that offers a way to increase government access to information about AI risks. They cover two of the bill's most important features: how it fills a significant gap in existing law by protecting disclosures about “substantial and specific dangers” to public safety, even if no specific laws have been broken, and how the bill prevents companies from using contracts and NDAs to waive the whistleblower rights it creates. To accompany the episode, be sure to read the new piece by Bullock and Mackenzie Arnold, "Protecting AI Whistleblowers.”To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. LATE SUNDAY NIGHT, police in El Salvador arrested one of President Nayib Bukele's sharpest critics, Ruth Eleonora López, an anti-corruption attorney who has spent years exposing government abuses. “[She] is one of the strongest voices in defense of democracy,” says Noah Bullock, her colleague and the executive director of Cristosal, a human rights group operating in northern Central America, including El Salvador. López, a university professor and former elections official, heads Cristosal's anti-corruption unit. She has also been an outspoken critic of Bukele's crackdown on gang violence that has resulted in “arbitrary detentions, human rights violations,” and the imprisonment of people not connected to gangs, according to Cristosal. The organization has documented widespread abuses in the country's prison system. “There's a clear pattern of physical abuse, and on top of that, a clear pattern of systematic denial of basic necessities like food, water, bathrooms, medicine — medical care in general," says Bullock. “Those two factors have combined to cause the deaths of at least 380 people” in custody in recent years. That's a prison system “that's been contracted by the U.S. government,” Bullock adds. This week on The Intercept Briefing, Bullock speaks to host Jessica Washington about López's continued imprisonment and what her work and detention reveals about the Trump administration's interest in El Salvador's prison system. Facing vague corruption charges, López has seen her family and lawyer but not yet a judge. “The type of jails and the prison system that the United States has contracted is one of a dictatorship — one that operates outside of the rule of law,” says Bullock. But El Salvador isn't the only country the U.S. is looking to partner with to outsource immigration detention. “Now in addition to El Salvador, the U.S. has reportedly explored, sought, or struck deals with at least 19 other countries,” says Nick Turse, national security fellow for The Intercept. “Many of these countries,” says Turse, “have been excoriated by not only human rights groups and NGOs, but also the U.S. State Department.”“ These policies did not leap fully formed from the head of Donald Trump,” says Turse. They have a legacy largely stemming from the post-9/11 counterterrorism policies of the George W. Bush administration. “The Trump administration has expanded the Bush and Obama-era terrorism paradigm to cast immigrants and refugees as terrorists and as gang members,” says Turse.Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. Seth Bullock first pinned a badge in Montana, where he presided over the territory's very first legal execution. That's in addition to serving as a territorial senator and establishing Yellowstone National Park. Bullock then drifted east to the Black Hills and helped tame the lawless boom town of Deadwood. And let's be honest, Bullock's time in Deadwood is what he's mostly known for, thanks to the HBO drama of the same name. But how accurate was that portrayal? What was Bullock's life like before Deadwood? How'd he go from being a frontier Sheriff to serving as a bodyguard for the President of the United States? And is it true he raised an entire regiment of cowboys to fight in World War I? Join me today as we discuss the real-life Seth Bullock, a man Teddy Roosevelt once described as a true westerner and the finest type of frontiersman. And yes, we'll also take a look at whether or not Bullock had any run-ins with the notorious Al Swearengen. This episode is brought to you by Huel.
