Hour 2 (8.20) Jim J. Bullock is back in the studio with Tim, forty-plus years after Too Close for Comfort — plus the Smoke House cheese bread Tim can't stop thinking about. Tim and Jim go all the way back to when they worked together, and they spend the first half of the hour there: the Monroe Ficus years, the run on the John Davidson version of Hollywood Squares where Bullock sometimes filled in as host, and the stories that come with four decades of knowing somebody. The conversation keeps rolling into whether The Love Boat could ever sail again, and into the crew's ongoing and doomed project to butch Jim up. From there it's the latest in toaster technology and the unanswerable question of where morning news anchors find that much energy at 5 a.m. And Tim closes it out on the Smoke House in Burbank and the garlic cheese bread he can't shake — the steakhouse has sat across from Warner Bros. since 1946, and the recipe came from the original owners and got passed quietly down through generations of chefs, with hundreds of vacuum-sealed loaves now shipping around the country every week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After killing his family in the winter of 1971, John List went on the run, initiating a worldwide manhunt that would last nearly twenty years before he was finally apprehended. Sherry Bullock's 19-year-old daughter, Emma, was fun-loving, easygoing, and known for leaving “a trail of Emma” wherever she went.On February 6, 2021, Emma was killed in a devastating accident on a Florida interstate. In our conversation, Sherry shares honestly about the shock of sudden loss, the silence that followed, and the questions she wrestled with about heaven, God's sovereignty, and where God was when Emma died. She also explains the meaning behind the title of her book, The Mess We Leave Behind: Unshakable Hope in Unspeakable Loss. What began as the physical mess Emma left behind became a picture of the emotional and spiritual aftermath of her death—and a reminder that Emma had lived, loved, and mattered.Sherry talks about what grieving parents need most, why grief cannot be separated from love, and how she came to see grief as holy ground. She also shares a powerful image of hope as the rope God lowers into the pit for us to hold onto.  As Sherry says, “Hope is everything.”This is an honest conversation about child loss, faith, and the presence of God in the midst of the mess.Sherry's book, The Mess We Leave Behind: Unshakable Hope in Unspeakable Loss, is available in paperback and Kindle editions on Amazon.  Click HERE to get your copy.  I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. In early December 1971, after a month of watching the lightbulbs in the List house slowly burn out one after another, neighbors finally became concerned about the List family and called the Westfield, NJ police to report their suspicions. Acting on the calls, officers arrived at house on the morning of December 7 to perform a wellbeing check, and when no one answered the door, they managed to gain access to the house through a basement window.  When they reached the first floor, the officers found the bodies of the List family—including the couple's three children—dead from gunshot wounds to the head they'd suffered a month earlier. Noticeably absent from the remains in the house were those of the family patriarch, John List. In his office, investigators discovered a letter List had written to the pastor of his local church, in which he claimed to have murdered his family in order to spare them the pain of living in a world he believed had become corrupt and morally bankrupt. Click to Subscribe: https://bit.ly/Youtube-Subscribe-SoapDirt Bold and the Beautiful spoilers anticipate an exciting turn of events as Melissa Dylan (Sydney Bullock) could potentially evolve into the new Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood). In a recent interview, Bullock hinted that her character might emulate the infamous Steffy, as suggested by head writer Brad Bell in a recent meeting. Bullock is currently revisiting Season 24 of the show, which is known for the dramatic love triangle involving Steffy, Hope Logan (Annika Noelle), and Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton), a narrative that may be reprised with Melissa Dylan, Will Spencer (Crew Morrow), and Electra Forrester (Laneya Grace) at the center. B&B spoilers indicate that with Will being the new Liam in this relationship dynamic, it is interesting to see how Bullock's character will navigate her attraction to Will, despite his declared love for Electra. The character development of Dylan, from a sweet, genuine character to a potential antagonist, is reminiscent of Steffy's transformation in season 24, making for an intriguing plotline. Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) may also play a crucial role in this new love triangle, potentially siding with Dylan in her pursuit of Will, creating further tension between him and Katie Logan (Heather Tom).  Spoilers for old and Beautiful suggest that Electra's bullying tactics and control over Dylan's personal life echo Steffy's past actions, adding another layer of complexity to the storyline. Despite Electra's intimidating behavior, Dylan has shown resilience and determination, indicating a potential shift towards a Steffy-like attitude in the future. Dear White Women
31: The Words We Use, The People We Judge: A Conversation on Incarceration with Marcus Bullock

Dear White Women

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2026 74:45

Do you know someone who's been incarcerated? Have you ever actually asked them their story, instead of judging them on that one fact? Because 95% of incarcerated people eventually leave prison and come home. They are our neighbors, our coworkers, our family members.  Here's why this is relevant to you today: This administration has made "tough on crime" the centerpiece of its second term - among other things, reviving the federal death penalty, pushing back against cashless bail reform, and pressuring prosecutors nationwide to seek harsher sentences (when, of course, it benefits them and/or the MAGA agenda). The message from Washington is loud and clear: punishment first, everything else second. But here's a question nobody in Washington seems to be asking: what happens after? How we treat people when they come home - whether we see them as people, or permanently as their worst mistake - says as much about us as any policy coming out of Washington. So today we're going straight to a conversation that is one of our favorites, with someone who's lived both sides of this story: Marcus Bullock, CEO of Flikshop, who was incarcerated as a teenager and built a company helping formerly incarcerated people stay connected to their families and rebuild their lives. This is a conversation about what "law and order" actually looks like on the ground and in people - not just in the abstract. What to listen for:  Marcus's origin story for Flikshop: how his mother's daily letters and photos during his eight-year sentence became the blueprint for a company that now keeps families connected to incarcerated loved ones The moment Marcus, at 15, stood before a judge and didn't grasp what "concurrent" and "consecutive" sentences meant; he just wanted to know if he'd be home for Christmas. Why Marcus resists the word "felon" (and "inmate" and "convict")  What it was like to go through adolescence and puberty inside an adult maximum-security prison, and the moment - a conversation with a friend serving 31 years - that broke him out of denial about his own situation The "class system" Marcus describes inside prison - from commissary money to medical care to solitary confinement - and how closely it mirrors inequities on the outside His reflection on perspective as "better than courage and hope," and how prison reframed what counted as hardship The emotional toll on his mother - isolation, cost, fear - as a reminder that incarceration ripples through entire families Applying to 41 jobs and getting rejected every time before the 42nd said yes - and what that reveals about resilience versus a broken system The real cost of the "have you been convicted of a felony?" checkbox - from job and housing applications to a story about being flagged by TSA at his own construction site How Flikshop Angels grew from a gesture by John Legend into a way for kids with incarcerated parents to send selfies to their moms and dads His challenge to listeners: change the dinner table conversation first - humanizing returning citizens starts there About Marcus: Marcus Bullock is an entrepreneur, justice reform advocate, and TED speaker. Following his 2004 release from prison, he launched a construction business that grew to employ other returning citizens. Bullock is the Founder and CEO of Flikshop, Inc., a software company that builds tools to help incarcerated people stay connected to their families and build community. Robin shares why he believes God promised Trump another term—if Trump chooses to accept the assignment—and explains how the response of the remnant could influence that decision. He also challenges traditional religious teachings about sickness, tragedy and God's sovereignty, revealing why he believes Satan—not God—is responsible for stealing, killing and destroying. Through an eye-opening examination of Job, fear, the power of our words, and the law of seedtime and harvest, Robin explains how believers may unknowingly create destructive spiritual harvests. Series Description Disclosure is a three-part podcast series from the Docs with Disabilities Podcast that examines one of the most personal and consequential decisions disabled healthcare providers make: whether, when, and how to disclose a disability. Through the voices of medical students, residents, practicing physicians, psychologists, nurses, researchers, legal scholars, and disability advocates, the series explores disclosure as an ongoing process shaped by identity, institutional culture, ableism, and power. Blending lived experience with research and policy, the series challenges assumptions about disability in healthcare while illuminating pathways toward more inclusive learning, training, and practice environments. Part 2: Medical Culture, Stigma, and What Prevents Disclosure Why does disability disclosure feel so difficult—and for many, unsafe—in healthcare? In the second episode of the Disclosure series, we move beyond individual disclosure decisions to examine the culture of medicine itself. Through the perspectives of physicians, researchers, allied health professionals, disability scholars, and trainees, this episode explores how the hidden curriculum, stigma, institutional practices, and everyday interactions shape whether disabled healthcare professionals feel they belong. Contributors reflect on the burdens of seeking accommodations, the impact of ableist assumptions, the complexities of partial disclosure, and the ways colleagues, mentors, and institutional norms influence identity safety. Together, these stories reveal that disclosure is never simply an individual choice—it is a reflection of the culture in which it occurs and a catalyst for reimagining a more inclusive future for healthcare. Part 1: The Decision to Disclose What does it really mean to disclose a disability in healthcare? In the first episode of the Disclosure series, healthcare providers across the continuum—from students and trainees to practicing clinicians—share the personal, professional, and institutional factors that shape disclosure decisions. Drawing on stories from medical students, residents, physicians, researchers, disability scholars, and legal experts, the episode explores disclosure as more than a pathway to accommodations—it can be an act of identity, advocacy, community-building, and resistance. At the same time, contributors examine the risks of stigma, discrimination, and institutional betrayal that continue to make disclosure a deeply complex and often uncertain decision. This Friday is Juneteenth, a holiday marking the date that some of the last enslaved people in the Confederacy received word that they were free. Juneteenth celebrations date back to the 1860s, but it didn't become a federal holiday in 2021. Now, communities across our region mark Juneteenth with storytelling events, speaker series, community meals and music. The Highland Center for the Arts in Greensboro will host Singing a Journey of Freedom: Songs of Slavery and Emancipation on Friday. The program began as a research project by Mat Callahan, a musician and author currently residing in Bern, Switzerland. He uncovered songs composed and sung by enslaved people and abolitionists that had been buried by history. Callahan then teamed up with Dr. Kathy Bullock to bring this music to life. Bullock is a visiting professor of music at Bennington College, as well as a singer, arranger and choral conductor specializing in gospel, spirituals and classical works by composers from the African diaspora. We are also joined by Rev. Leon Dunkley, an ethnomusicologist and a minister at the North Chapel in Woodstock. Then, Joan Gorman of the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh shares the history of the museum, which used to be a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Alan Rozenshtein, Research Director at Lawfare and Visiting Senior Fellow at the Institute for Law & AI (LawAI), spoke with Christoph Winter, LawAI Founding Director and Assistant Professor of Law and AI at the University of Cambridge, and LawAI Senior Research Fellow Charlie Bullock, about their new paper "Radical Optionality: Governing Transformative AI Under Uncertainty," which argues that, given the possibility of transformative AI within the next decade and deep uncertainty about its capabilities and risks, governments should aggressively build the institutional capacity to regulate competently when needed, rather than either deferring to the market or locking in premature substantive rules. The conversation covered the four foundational assumptions underlying the paper and what makes the optionality "radical"; the difficulty of regulating an exponentially improving and poorly understood technology and what it means to "feel the AGI"; why a pure permissionless-innovation approach breaks down once the national-security implications of transformative AI come into view; why the European precautionary approach risks regulating without the expertise to enforce; the centrality of hiring and talent and what an adequately funded U.S. counterpart to the UK AI Security Institute would look like; the concrete work that such an agency would do, including evaluations, standard-setting, and procurement-side cybersecurity requirements modeled on CMMC; the importance of building international information-sharing channels among liberal democracies before they are urgently needed; and the case against broad federal preemption of state AI laws before any federal regulatory framework exists. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Jason Bullock, Founder of Bodhisys and owner of Carolina Rides, about how delivering excellent customer service depends on systems and processes that support the many moving parts of reservations, inventory, and deliveries. He shares why he developed Bodhisys, a reservation management system tailored for the unique needs of rental businesses, optimizing everything from inventory management to delivery efficiency. Listen in as we discuss the importance of streamlined operations in creating exceptional customer experiences and fostering industry collaboration. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Jason transitioned from a background in logistics and packaging to owning and operating multiple vacation rental and bike businesses Why customer service and efficient logistics are crucial for success in the rental industry Challenges Jason faced with existing reservation and booking platforms, and how this led to the creation of Bodhisys How Bodhisys uses technology to streamline inventory, delivery logistics, and communications, to provide a better customer experience Why seasonal pricing and adaptability in operations are important How Jason is partnering with competitors through technology and shared platforms to uplift the industry as a whole What impact technology-driven efficiencies have on customer satisfaction, repeat business, and overall profitability in the rental space The Art and Logistics of Rentals When most people think of the travel industry, glamorous destinations and dazzling activities come to mind. But Jason's world is more about the nitty-gritty of inventory management, deliveries, and keeping up with vacationers' evolving needs. His business delivers thousands of bikes and equipment items to vacationers at resorts and private rentals in the Hilton Head and Charleston areas. COVID-19 only magnified these challenges, as business whiplashed from 4% to 140% of historical sales within a week—forcing immediate innovation to keep up with demand and ensure guests received what they needed, when and where they needed it. The Birth of Bodhisys As business boomed, so did complaints—especially from frustrated guests who had trouble finding their rentals amid the sea of bikes and equipment. Seeing that traditional booking software wasn't designed for the logistics-heavy rental of "stuff," Jason was motivated by dissatisfied customers and exhausted employees to build a smarter system. The solution was building Bodhisys, a reservation management system purpose-built for logistics, inventory, and delivery—as opposed to the "activity first" platforms dominating the market. With features like photo geolocation of delivered items, automated customer messaging, and dynamic inventory management. Systems = Better Business, Better Experiences While the technology behind Bodhisys is robust, its true value lies in the ripple effect it creates for business owners and travelers alike. With real-time communications, automated reminders, and demand prediction, operators can plan staffing, adjust inventory, and meet seasonal swings without being blindsided. Importantly, these changes aren't just about operational ease, they have an impact on customer satisfaction. Similar to Amazon's familiar delivery notifications, Bodhisys provides travelers with the same transparency and reliability during their vacations. Which, in turn, leads to happier guests, less on-site confusion, and more repeat business. When twenty-seven-year-old James Bullock was shot and killed in St. Louis in the winter of 1958, investigators immediately focused their attention on Bullock's wife, Edna, who was the beneficiary of her husband's large life insurance policy. Witnesses recalled seeing the victim being chased by a man with a gun on the night of the murder, and detectives suspected Edna had arranged for her husband to be killed so she could collect the insurance money. They didn't know it at the time, but St. Louis investigators were investigating what was to be the first victim in a decades-long career of a most unlikely hitman and serial killer. Although they had their suspicions that Edna Bullock had enlisted the help of her ex-husband, Glen Engleman, in the murder of her new husband, it would take many more years before those suspicions were confirmed. And by that time, Engleman, a successful suburban dentist had taken the lives of several more people, all to satisfy his own interest in calculated and carefully planned assassinations.
