As a kid we used maps to find our way around the mountains. Trading charts are a bit like maps...there are points on the chart where probabilities can be visualized. One of my early mentors told me: buy the probable and sell the improbable. Charts can help us to do that...but they are not the only thing. They can help us to see probable and improbable opportunities. What kind of charts do you use to make investment or trading decisions? Are they charts based on time, or do you use charts based on price movement. What works for you? There are benefits to each. I personally use a combination of both. For making trading & investing decisions I use multiple timeframes and I look at market structure within those time frames. However, I also have tick and range-based charts, with the purpose of illustrating price movement where time is a 2nd class citizen. These kinds of charts are excellent for show channels of price movement. I don't specifically make a trade or investment decision from them; but they serve as input to the decision making process. What sort of reliability can you have with using charts to make trading decisions? At one point earlier in my trading journey I looked closely at the candlestick patterns. I've not found them to be reliable in terms of making decisions. In fact, my personal preference is to use the OHLC bars instead of the candlesticks...I find more value using those. As I mentioned earlier there are many kinds of charts such as: 1. Line Chart 2. Bar Chart 3. Candlestick Chart 4. Volume Chart 5. Tick Chart 6. Range Bar Chart 7. Point & Figure Chart 8. Renko Chart 9. Kagi Chart 10. Three-Line Break Chart Other non-price-centric charts include Renko charts...I like to see general market movement with those as well. In the end it is a balance of using certain kinds of charts for different purposes. If I need to see time as a first-class citizen, then Bar Charts are the thing to use, and have several of them on multiple timeframes. If I need to see market structure, then Range charts, and Renko charts help me to see the structure. Charting has its advantages no doubt, but it can also fool the eyes and give you a head fake. The big market movers will try to lure you into trading a certain direction. Alot of the chart usage comes down to how often you anticipate making trading or investing decisions and creating the right mixture of chart types...and THEN..training your eyes and your trading system to recognize the opportunities. In reality, I have found that after you do that, it is more critical to be able to take a loss and be able to think clearly and learn from that. Charting is important; but being able to lose while preserving capital and sticking to your system is more important. I will talk about the art of losing so that you can win in an upcoming episode. Thanks for joining...until next time...don't trust everything the chart is telling you!!
In this lesson we learn how how OHLC bars are formed. We also examine how support and resistance lines are formed to create continuation patterns and indicate changing trends. Lesson 48 – Charting with OHLC, Support and Resistance
