On this episode, Greg is joined by Dr. Melissa Strong, founder and lead data scientist for IndiOmics. Her background is in molecular biology and epigenetics—or how our environment can affect our gene expression. The idea behind IndiOmics started when Dr. Strong was pregnant with her son and interested in better understanding chemical exposure in utero. The organization's mission is to educate the public about common chemicals that have the ability to affect us on a cellular level and what we can do to avoid or prevent exposure. Much of its work focuses on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Participants receive a kit, provide a sample from home and ship the kit to the IndiOmics laboratory. When the results are ready, they can login for a personalized look at what they've been exposed to, how it's affecting them on a molecular level and steps they can take to avoid or prevent additional exposure. For example, they may be able to cut down on EDC exposure by not heating or microwaving plastics. Dr. Strong explains that our gene expression is not set in stone, and our environment and behaviors play a significant role in determining our health. Particularly with EDCs, science has demonstrated the toxicity of even very low levels of chemical exposure. To learn more about what you can do to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals, even if you don't know your levels, Dr. Strong recommends visiting the Environmental Working Group's website, www.ewg.org, and referencing the IndiOmics Healthy Living Pocket Guide at www.indiomics.org/pocket-guide. Looking to the future, Dr. Strong is encouraged by younger generations' awareness around this issue and believes that consumer demand will drive action on the part of manufacturers and regulators alike to further reduce the use of harmful chemicals in consumer products. She also believes that blood tests on endocrine exposures will eventually become a part of routine medical care, empowering more people to understand their exposure levels and take steps to improve their health.

Amongst the walls and halls of pledges, panels, and provocative dialogue, this 3 part series will bring you the pulse of COP, the highlights and what doesn't make the headlines. COP26 aspirational goals and commitments to impact include: 1. Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach Countries are being asked to come forward with ambitious 2030 emissions reductions targets that align with reaching net zero by the middle of the century. To deliver on these stretching targets, countries will need to: accelerate the phase-out of coalcurtail deforestationspeed up the switch to electric vehiclesencourage investment in renewables. 2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats The climate is already changing and it will continue to change even as we reduce emissions, with devastating effects. At COP26 we need to work together to enable and encourage countries affected by climate change to: protect and restore ecosystemsbuild defences, warning systems and resilient infrastructure and agriculture to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods and even lives 3. Mobilise finance To deliver on our first two goals, developed countries must make good on their promise to mobilize at least $100bn in climate finance per year by 2020.  International financial institutions must play their part and we need work towards unleashing the trillions in private and public sector finance required to secure global net zero. 4. Work together to deliver We can only rise to the challenges of the climate crisis by working together. At COP26 we must: finalize the Paris Rulebook (the detailed rules that make the Paris Agreement operational)accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis through collaboration between governments, businesses and civil society. On this week's episode of the Cygnal Pulse Pod, Chris and Brent discuss the burst of optimism among Republicans stemming from the Virginia race. Yet, the two reiterate the importance of how different federal elections are from smaller campaigns that focus on local issues. Simplistic messaging stood out as the winning strategy in Youngkin's victory. On another note, an original process of daily tracking developed by the Cygnal team has resulted in very accurate results in comparison with the traditional multi-mode poll. Our guest this week on the Cygnal Pulse Pod (Ep. 36) is Matt Gould. Matt Gould is a New Jersey based political operative with more than 10 years of legislative election experience. He has served as the executive director of the New Jersey Assembly Republican leadership PAC, Assembly Republican Victory, since 2017. In 2021 the caucus had the largest single cycle pick-ups in 30 years, gaining 6 seats. In the last two cycles the caucus has flipped a total of 8 seats. Matt lives in Manahawkin, NJ with his wife Katie, three sons, Teague, Dan and Jack, and bassett hound Millard Fillmore.

For thousands of years, humans have obsessed over Mars from afar. At first, maybe it was the fact that Mars stands out in the night sky because of its reddish color. But as we learned more about Mars and the conditions there, it was the possibility of life on this distant planet that captured our collective imagination. At its closest, Mars is nearly 40 million miles away from Earth — and we've tried for centuries to bridge that distance, using everything from telescopes to flybys and probes. Mars has inspired wild fantasies about distant civilizations and little green men. It's put a spell on many observers, who hope to unlock its mysteries. On this special episode of The Pulse, we explore what we are learning about Mars, and when we can expect to actually see humans set foot on the red planet. Also heard on this week’s episode: Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, talks about our attempts to get closer and closer to the red planet, the important work that's being done by the Mars rovers, and what it would take to land humans on Mars. Some people called it the next great leap in space exploration — others, a suicide mission. But for Dan Carey and Leila Zucker, Mars One was a dream come true. Spearheaded by a Dutch company, Mars One aimed to land ordinary people on Mars by the year 2023, where they'd start the red planet's first human colony. There was just one catch — it was a one-way trip … and survival was not guaranteed. Reporter Liz Tung talks with Carey and Zucker about what made them want to leave their lives on Earth, and start new ones on Mars. We talk with science historian Jordan Bimm about “Mars jars” and the group of exobiologists — scientists who study extraterrestrial biology — who spearheaded early research about life on Mars.

On this episode, Greg Horne talks with Dr. Robert Winn, Director at VCU Massey Cancer Center. Dr. Winn is the second ever African American to be director of a cancer center in the United States. Growing up as the child of a 15-year-old mother, he didn't dream of becoming a doctor, but two priests in his life saw his potential and helped him to get on a path that eventually led to medical school. In his role at Massey Cancer Center and his life, Dr. Winn focuses on two goals – eradicating cancer and eradicating disparities in access to quality health care wherever they exist. People who have access to quality treatment receive it. It's that simple. And, trust and affordability play a critical role. As Dr. Winn explains, in order to earn people's trust in science, the scientific and medical community must be trustworthy. That's why Massey Cancer Center is working on a trustworthiness scale to measure how they are doing with their patients.Dr. Winn also shares his perspective on the role of health data convergence in improving health outcomes and the importance of using data from the community to improve scientific questions and address social determinants of health. When it comes to disparities in health care, we already know that a patient's zip code has a significant impact on their health outcomes. Taken a step further, we can look at the implications of racism historically and identify how it is impacting health outcomes for African Americans today.Another foundational value for Dr. Winn is respect for humanity. He describes his awe and humility at both the power and limitations of science in treating cancer. He recognizes that there are some cancers and diseases that even today's best medicine cannot fix. This is when it is imperative for cancer centers to ensure patients have the best possible palliative care to support their transition from this life. Finally, Dr. Winn leaves us with his thoughts on the cancer center of the future and the importance of data to better understand population health and communities.

We're in the ‘home straight' heading towards the end of the year and following the crazy year so many of us have had (thanks COVID!) we thought what better time to remind ourselves of tools to help prevent burnout? We were lucky enough a few weeks back to run an online seminar on burnout with the best selling author, psychologist and leadership expert, Dr Jacinta Jiménez, and, as so many people signed up, we decided we should revisit Dr Jacinta's amazing advice from our conversation on the podcast with her some months back. Following the release of her science-backed, best selling book, The Burnout Fix, Dr Jacinta is definitely the one to turn to for advice dealing with burnout. She has deconstructed what burnout is, how it can be caused, and of course how to recover from burnout. In this info-packed mini episode, you'll hear that burnout for all of us is caused by one of six mismatches between who we are and our work or roles. Then you'll hear how using Dr Jacinta's PULSE model can help you keep burnout away. Enjoy this mini episode and don't forget to schedule yourself a mini break for today too! :-) Useful LinksOur full episode with Dr JLink to the Mentor Walks Webinar we did with Dr J Jacinta's new book: The Burnout FixAmazon Kindle linkAmazon Hardcover linkJacinta's websiteJacinta on LinkedIn See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

PE Pulse is a quarterly report and corresponding podcast miniseries that provides analysis and insights on private equity market activity and trends. Visit https://www.ey.com/pepulse to view this quarter's summary and infographic.   Five takeaways from 3Q 2021: Global M&A markets are on their way to a record year, with private equity (PE) in the driver's seat. PE as an asset class continues to grow, with retail and insurance markets positioned to drive future asset growth. PE firms' continued focus on the technology sector is driven by rising needs for security, automation and the digital transformation of critical organizational functions. Health care is garnering significant interest from PE due to favorable macro tailwinds, long-term growth expectations and an anticipated increase in consumer spending. Deal activity is not limited to large-scale deals; middle market deployment is the highest since the global financial crisis.
