There are so many great quotes by women that we have heard through the years and that I have found doing research for these episodes, that I can probably do nine episodes' worth of quotes. We will see if I do that or if I do something else in the coming weeks of March.Today, you will hear six powerful quotes about a variety of topics, but the concept of listening takes on a big role in a few of them.As always, I am so grateful to all of you who support the podcast! I do this show because of you. While I enjoy the quotes myself, I do this podcast because many of you who are looking for inspiration and impact from these quotes come back and listen to it on a consistent basis. Episode 394: Navigating Multiple Exits Across Tech's Evolution with Raj Singh

    Fueling Deals

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2026 43:53

From installing network cards as a teenager to navigating four successful exits across decades of tech evolution, Raj Singh shares lessons on acquisition timing, building buyer relationships, and the emotional journey founders experience after selling. Raj Singh is VP of Product at Mozilla, leading new zero-to-one product initiatives. He joined Mozilla in 2022 via acquisition of his startup Pulse (AI meeting summarization). Previously, he co-founded Tempo AI (acquired by Salesforce 2015), All the Cooks (acquired by CookPad), and served as VP of Business Development at Skyfire (acquired by Opera). WHAT YOU'LL LEARN You'll discover why exit windows matter more than plans, how to build relationships with potential acquirers years in advance, the four emotional stages after selling, why 80-85% of acquisitions are CEO-driven, and how founder fatigue is the number two reason startups fail. RAJ'S JOURNEY Raj's entrepreneurial instincts showed up early. Before college, he installed network cards in friends' computers for students heading to dorms. Desktop computers didn't have Ethernet ports back then, so he bought cards from Fry's Electronics, installed them, set up drivers, and charged for the service. His first substantive deal came during the dot-com crash, a net-zero acquisition in the early video codec era around 2000. He's since navigated four exits across radically different market conditions: the dot-com crash, 2008 financial crisis, COVID, and today's landscape. Each taught him something different about timing, negotiation, and integration. "What worked yesterday doesn't work today." THE SERIAL EXIT OPERATOR Raj's perspective comes from exiting companies during each major market cycle, giving him pattern recognition most founders never develop. At Mozilla, he's thrived leading products like Mozilla Solo (AI website builder) and Postful (social media management), finding ways to keep learning within a larger organization. KEY INSIGHTS Exit windows exist and close. Miss one, and the next might not emerge for 3-8 years. Founder fatigue is the number two reason startups fail. The hardest question: can you push through for another five years? Build acquisition relationships years in advance. Identify your 10 most likely buyers on day one. Check in every six months with no intent to sell. Acquisitions are about timing. If your timing doesn't align with a buyer's executive off-site decision, you could be off by six months and it won't happen. The emotional journey: relief when the deal closes, regret within days, inspired to make it the best acquisition ever, then acceptance it's not your company anymore. My apologies for not having an episode out on Monday. Technical difficulties, followed by my own busy schedule, prevented me from recording and releasing an episode until today. March is Women's History Month, so I decided to do quotes by women this week (and possibly for the entire month). There are so many great quotes by women that we have heard through the years and that I have found doing research for these episodes, that I can probably do nine episodes' worth of quotes. We will see if I do that or if I do something else in the coming weeks of March.Today, I focus on quotes by women about women. You will hear seven powerful statements about the important role that women play in our world. As always, I am so grateful to all of you who support the podcast! I do this show because of you. While I enjoy the quotes myself, I do this podcast because many of you who are looking for inspiration and impact from these quotes come back and listen to it on a consistent basis. Thanks to all of you for being a huge part of this journey! In order to help me keep this journey going, please consider becoming a supporter of the show. In this episode, Rachel sits down with author and illustrator Andy Pizza to explore why a "creative pulse" is the essential, make-or-break component of any successful career. Andy argues that while business often relies on data and logic, the true differentiator is the ability to show up with a unique, human point of view. The conversation covers: Strategic vs. exploratory creativity: How to use creativity to solve specific business problems by working backward from a goal. The "input diet": Why being mindful of what you consume—from art to fiction—is vital for generating fresh ideas. The heroine's journey: A collaborative approach to success that prioritizes collective effort over the "solo hero" myth. Writing on stage: A method for testing creative hunches in low-stakes environments to build confidence and skill. Creativity in the age of AI: Why tapping into the "humanity side" remains the most important skill as technology evolves. Pamela Brown is a multi award-winning CNN anchor and chief investigative correspondent, who currently anchors The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown weekdays from 10a to 12pET. As CNN's chief investigative correspondent, Brown led the network's investigative team when it exposed decades of coordinated sexual assault cover-ups within the U.S. Coast Guard. The series led to multiple congressional inquiries into the pattern of ignored misconduct, the resignation of a top official and a scathing USCG internal review vowing change. It also earned Brown and her team multiple awards, including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award, the National Headliner award, and an award from the Center for Integrity in News Reporting for being an "example of impartial, objective and fair news reporting." Since joining CNN in 2013, Brown has also received Emmy nominations for her work exposing the Coast Guard cover-ups, her reporting on the Pulse nightclub shooting and the Manchester concert attack. Previously, Brown served as anchor of CNN Newsroom weekdays at 11aET, weekend primetime anchor, as well as CNN's senior Washington correspondent after serving on the network's voting integrity team covering the historic 2020 election. Prior to that, she was the Senior White House correspondent where she covered former President Donald Trump and his administration for all of the network's programs and platforms. Brown's reporting on the Trump administration covered key moments such as the special counsel's investigation into former President Donald Trump's campaign, two impeachment proceedings, the Covid pandemic, the controversial travel ban and child separation policies, and the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Prior to that, Brown served as CNN's Justice Correspondent with a focus on law enforcement, national security, and the U.S. Supreme Court, covering landmark decisions like the legalization of same-sex marriage. Brown has traveled the world reporting on some of the biggest global news stories, including in France, England, Denmark, Germany, Ireland and Japan. She has also conducted several high profile interviews, including with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she was the Democratic presidential nominee, as well as former Vice President Mike Pence when he was in office. Brown began her career at ABC7/WJLA-TV and NewsChannel8 in Washington D.C., where she became a Sunday evening anchor and a special projects reporter covering several national and international stories. Brown was one of the few local journalists to travel to earthquake-ravaged Haiti in January 2010 and later returned on her own to report on the rebuilding process in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas.   Pamela Will be hosting a Christian nationalism documentary on March 22nd https://www.instagram.com/pamelabrowncnn/ https://www.cnn.com/profiles/pamela-brown-profile#about

Episode 289: TechTime Radio: This week, we open with Microsoft's Project Helix, the ambitious “one box to rule them all” promising native PC gaming, Wi‑Fi 7 speeds, and a next‑gen low‑latency controller. With a rumored $1,000 price and a 2027 release window, we dig into whether true backward compatibility across Xbox generations finally makes a premium console worth the splurge. Or should we pass on the New X-box for the rumored Steam Machines? What new gaming machine will be the SNES, and what unit will end up being the Virtual Boy? Then Gwen Way takes over Gadgets & Gear with a packed lineup, starting with the Pen Pulse Smart Ring on Kickstarter—sleep, activity, metabolism, and glucose‑leaning insights with no subscription and a practical sizing kit backed by an on‑time delivery history. We pair that with a hard look at Apple's $599 MacBook Neo hitting Walmart and Amazon, asking whether it's a budget Mac breakthrough or a Chromebook in a fancy suit. Finally, we have a nation‑state iOS exploit framework now circulating in criminal hands. Nathan spotlights Lego's reactive Smart Brick, and closes the segment with a smooth Glenlivet 12 tasting to keep things classy.Full Episode Details:A single box that runs Halo and Half‑Life without hacks? When Microsoft unveiled Project Helix, we dug into what it really means to merge Xbox simplicity with full PC gaming. From native access to Steam, Epic, and GOG to Wi‑Fi 7, a new low‑latency controller, and whispers of Surface‑team handhelds and OEM “Xbox” devices, the pitch is bold. But can a $1,000 hybrid win over builders who already plug their PCs into the living room? We map the business case, the tech hurdles, and the one promise that could flip skeptics into buyers: honest, full‑fidelity backward compatibility across the entire Xbox library. The episode takes a sharp turn into AI safety with a lawsuit tied to Google Gemini, forcing a conversation most platforms sidestep: what happens when users form emotional bonds with chatbots? We talk guardrails, roleplay, and the hard truth that you can't program remorse. If companies market “AI companions,” what duty do they owe when simulation bleeds into support? Expect a candid look at crisis detection, liability, and the growing gap between automated empathy and human care.On the hardware front, Apple's budget‑leaning MacBook Neo shows up at Walmart and Amazon for $599, raising eyebrows about specs, placement, and brand identity. Is it a smart entry point for students and switchers, or a dressed‑up Chromebook in bright colors? Then our Gadgets & Gear feature spotlights the Pen Pulse smart ring—a subscription‑free wearable that tracks sleep, breathing, activity, and even glucose trends. With a real sizing kit, solid delivery history, and early pricing far below Oura, it's a compelling option for anyone tired of monthly fees. We round things out with a smooth pour of Glenlivet 12 and a quick look at Lego's sensor‑packed Smart Brick, asking where innovation ends and cash‑grab begins. If you're curious about the future of gaming platforms, the ethics of AI companionship, and the shifting value equation in laptops and wearables, you'll feel right at home. Hello? From Bell's First Call to Gen Z's Telephobia: 150 Years of the Telephone

When Alexander Graham Bell made the first-ever phone call on March 10, 1876, he never could have dreamed how the telephone would evolve — not to mention the many ways it would end up changing the way we live, work, and communicate. This week, on the 150th anniversary of that first call, we take a look back at the history of the phone, and how it transformed America. We hear about the dramatic race to invent the telephone — and why some people questions whether Alexander Graham Bell deserves all of the credit learn about early cultural debates over everything from how phones should be used, to the etiquette of picking up calls; and explore recent trends in usage, from a growing movement to buy kids landlines, to telephobia — a fear of making calls. It's a well-known story, one often lifted up as a shining example of American ingenuity — the invention of the telephone by the appropriately named Alexander Graham Bell. But there's a more dramatic version of the phone's origin story — one involving a fierce dispute over who really deserves credit for its invention. Pulse reporter Liz Tung digs into the 150-year-old controversy, filled with accusations of fraud, government corruption, and a fierce legal showdown that ended at the Supreme Court.  Phones have changed a lot over the past few decades — and so have the etiquette and culture surrounding how we use them. We survey friends and coworkers about their memories of what it was like when the landline was king, and talk with sociologist Claude Fischer about changing beliefs and cultural norms surrounding the phone, from its changing purpose, to debate over how to answer calls. Fischer is the author of “America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940.” These days, landlines are largely a thing of the past. But recently, they've started making a comeback — specifically among kids. Pulse reporter Alan Yu finds out why some parents are embracing this older technology, and some of the unexpected ways their children are deploying it. Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, spending hours on the phone was considered an essential part of being a teenager — but today, for a lot of Gen Z, making and taking calls has become a terrifying prospect. Reporter Grant Hill looks into what's behind the rise of “telephobia.”
