West Michigan Nice is a phenomenon that has intrigued people in this region - and beyond - for decades. In 2016, Oprah Winfrey herself visited Grand Rapids to engage in a dialogue with West Michigan residents about WMN and our community's deep political divide. While the concept of West Michigan Nice… this special brand of niceness that this community portrays, may seem pretty straightforward and harmless at first glance…. in this episode, we unpack the roots of this cultural problem and uplift the narrative justice work that will transform community and move the Black freedom struggle, and other freedom struggles, forward. In this episode, you will hear a conversation between Shayna Marie and Rodney Brown, president of Grand Rapids Media Initiative & Film Incubator. GR-MiFi is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing racial equity through narrative justice. By the end of this episode, you will hear historical context about how we developed this “WMN” culture through the lens of a powerful narrative called “A City Within A City” by Todd E. Robinson.Thank you for shifting the narrative and reaching beyond bias! For more information visit: https://linktr.ee/reachingbeyondbias

Well Family I am stoked to be bringing you this show tonight because we will have the opportunity to hear from our very special guest Author, Educator, and Speaker Mr. Todd E. Robinson all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada who has penned a very informative, candid story about the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan entitled, "A City Within A City-The Black Freedom Struggle In Grand Rapids, Michigan..." Need I say more? This book is spot on and will help many undertand what's really happening and has been going on since the 1920's beneath the surface. He will also define and help us understand how he came up with the phrase he has coined "managerial racism." This is definitely a show you do not want to miss especially to all of my Michigan audience! "A City Within a City is a case study of the civil rights era as it happened in smaller cities, focusing specifically on the struggles involving school integration and bureaucratic reforms in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The efforts to dismantle structures of racial inequality had a very different flavour in smaller northern cities than they did in other parts of the north, and Robinson's book should add a new dimension to our understanding of how the civil rights movement operated in a part of the country that has only recently become an object of focus among historians." Ladies & Gentlemen get ready because this is going to be a great time with my Cohosts Pastor Bryan R. Blakely, Victoria Proctor, myself along with our special guest Todd E. Robinson!!!
