In this month's ARA City Bookclub, I discuss two books which could inspire you and challenge you to look at life differently! Kazuo Ishiguro's 'The Buried Giant' is a beautiful fable about memory and loss. Ishiguro is a well known British writer who wrote Never Let Me Go. Mitch Albom's 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven' is a short and poignant book which really makes you think. The main protagonist Eddie dies at age 83 and he thinks his life has had no meaning, until he meets five people in heaven...
Welcome to ARA City Bookclub. We meet once a month to discuss latest book recommendations and reviews. Join 'ARA City Bookworms' on FB to find out about the next bookclub meeting. For this month's bookclub, I've chosen All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr and A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tylor. They're very different books as usual, I wanted to make sure there was something for everyone!
In this episode, I have carefully selected 3 very different books to recommend to you for the Summer. Modern classic: The Kite Runner by Khaled Husseini Non-fiction: The Opposite of Loneliness, collection of short stories and essays by Marina Keegan Funny easy-read: Almost English by Charlotte Mendelson Hope you enjoy it!
My Brilliant Friend The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighbourhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else.A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante’s inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. Karoo Boy After a freak accident, Douglas's twin brother is dead, and his family's fragmentation begins. Against the backdrop of the bitter conflict of 1970s South Africa, Douglas develops a clearer insight into himself and his place in the world, a world where dreams and reality meet in a surprising twist. Blazing with color and light, Karoo Boy offers a sensuous and lyrical evocation of South Africa that leaves a lasting impression and ultimately ends on a note of hope.
