It's one of his most beloved tales, but was written in a hurry and under duress. On this holiday episode of Dialogue, Marcia Franklin talks with Boise writer Samantha Silva about "A Christmas Carol," penned by Charles Dickens in 1843. In her debut novel, "Mr. Dickens and His Carol," Silva melds fact with fiction to imagine how Dickens came up with the plot for his now-classic story. Of Silva's work, Pulitzer Prize-winner and Boise resident Anthony Doerr says, "It's as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it's all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps." Silva talks with Franklin about what drew her to Dickens, how she researched her book, why she thinks "A Christmas Carol" crystallizes Dickens' ethos, and why the story is still relevant. A graduate of Boise State University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Silva is a screenwriter who has sold projects to Paramount, Universal, New Line Cinema, and TNT. A film version of her short story, "The Big Burn," won the One Potato Short Screenplay Competition at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival and will be released in 2018. Silva will also be writing another novel.

The anti-tax movement is "the most important overlooked social and political movement of the last half century", according to our guest Michael J. Graetz.  In his book The Power to Destroy: How the Antitax Movement Hijacked America (Princeton UP, 2024), Graetz chronicles the movement from a fringe theory promoted by zealous outsiders using false economic claims and thinly veiled racist rhetoric to a highly organized mainstream lobbying force, funded by billionaires, that dominates and distorts politics.  Building on vague and disproven theories about "supply side" economics, the movement has undermined long-held beliefs that taxes are a reasonable price to pay for civil society, sound infrastructure, national security, and shared prosperity.  Leaders have attacked the IRS, protected tax loopholes, and pushed aggressively for tax cuts from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump. Also known as "trickle-down" or "voodoo" economics, these theories falsely claim that tax cuts will pay for themselves, when in fact they have led to the need for increased debt, including massive foreign debt, to pay for critical national investments.  The antitax movement has expanded to include anti-government ideas and now, as told by Graetz, threatens the nation's social safety net, increases inequality, saps American financial strength, and undermines the status of the US dollar. In 1819, Chief Justice John Marshall declared that the power to tax entails “the power to destroy.” In this book Graetz argues that it is the antitax movement itself that wields this destructive power.  Suggested reading: Cloud Cuckoo Land, by Anthony Doerr

Many said that the Buddies wouldn't be able to comprehend this book, but many also said the Buddies would never get to 80 episodes, so it appears the haters were wrong (at least for the second one). Pulitzer Prize winner and recently adapted by Netflix for a limited series, "All The Light We Cannot See" is a book that can change your life. Naturally, that meant Kit and Bridge had to register their official opinions in the form of cork ratings and a deep dive into the character's minds... exploring the tricky moral ground of a sympathetic Nazi character. But complex intellectual conversations aside, the booze does get to them and things do get a little silly toward the end. You won't want to miss it. In this episode we have the pleasure and honor of speaking with Anthony Doerr. Anthony is an American author of novels, short stories, and essays. He is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See (2014), which was a #1 New York Times bestseller, has been translated into more than 40 languages, and has recently been adapted into a limited series on Netflix. He is also the author of the novels Cloud Cuckoo Land (2021) and About Grace (2007), short story collections The Shell Collector (2002) and Memory Wall (2010), and his personal memoir Four Seasons in Rome (2011). Anthony writes for The Boston Globe and The Morning News online magazine, has been featured in The Atlantic and The New Yorker, was the Writer in Residence for Idaho from 2007 to 2010, and has taught at Boise State University. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, he has received numerous prestigious awards and has been a finalist for many more. He was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and has called Boise his home for many years. All his deserved acclaim aside, Anthony was a blast to speak with. He's the kind of guy you feel you've known for years and with whom you want to share a bottle of wine by a fire pit (or as he may prefer, a six pack). He just has such a positive energy. We could have talked for hours, but restrained ourselves to focus on some of the themes of his novels which include the power of ideas to mobilize people to action, authoritative control and censorship, technology's ability to make wonders or wreak havoc, the dangers of “othering”, and being a force for good in the world. We touch on how many of these issues have affected our local community, the value of libraries, our shared love of Idaho, and even discuss how to be great parents and raise good, strong kids who are ready for a tumultuous world. FYI: We spoke with Anothy over Zoom, which is usually wonderful, but today caused a few hiccups. Or maybe it was our internet connection. Who knows- I'm not a tech nerd. But there are a few Matrix-y sounding pings and a little static towards the end. We hope you bear with us, because the conversation is well worth it. If you want to know more about Anthony, just Google him (he's kind of a big deal and is all over the internet). But you can get an overview at his website anthonydoerr.com (https://anthonydoerr.com) or by checking out one of his many writings. We strongly recommend you read either All the Light We Cannot See or Cloud Cuckoo Land, or tune into the Netflix series of All the Light We Cannot See.

This week's guest is an Emmy winner, a Grammy winner, and a nine-time Oscar nominee, whose scores have graced the big and small screens since the 1980s. James Newton Howard is the voice of many of your favorite scores, from co-scoring the Dark Knight Trilogy with Hans Zimmer to his Oscar-nominated score for Paul Greengrass' News of the World. Now, he's back with several new projects, some of which hearken back to music he has written in the past.   Howard's latest solo album, Night After Night, is a beautiful look back at his eight-film partnership with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, recontextualizing some of his most intriguing melodies from that longtime collaboration into piano-driven suites performed by virtuoso musicians, including concert pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.   On the small screen, Howard recently completed a lush, yearning score for Netflix's new miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, based on the acclaimed novel by Anthony Doerr and directed by Shawn Levy. Plus, after nearly a decade away from Panem, Howard resumes his collaboration with director Francis Lawrence for the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Now, Howard is here on the pod to talk about all of these projects and more.   You can find James Newton Howard at his official website here.   Night After Night is currently available on vinyl or your preferred streaming service, courtesy of Sony Masterworks.  Same with All the Light You Cannot See, courtesy of Netflix Music, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, care of Sony Music.

Time Magazine says the limited series of All The Light We Cannot See is a simplistic version of the book. The Daily Beast calls Mark Ruffalo's accent abominable. Lisa and Kirsten Plonner discussed All the Light We Cannot See on this episode and Kirsten didn't like the way the book ended. Still, the limited series has an entirely different ending, which Lisa discusses in today's episode.  Lessons in Chemistry is available on Apple TV and a new episode drops on Fridays. Lisa discussed Lessons in Chemistry on an episode of the podcast here. In Lessons in Chemistry, there were some dramatic changes from characters form the book to the show. For instance, one character Harriet was an aging housewife, but in the limited series, they change her to a young African American attorney. Vulture Magazine says that the show introduces a marginalized character and marginalizes her story.  Killers of the Flower Moon is now on the big screen and there is some debate about the age of the actors and this article delves into that topic.  CNN discusses the length of the movie. For more information, find Lisa on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and her website. *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links.
