They chat about the difficulty of being on Last One Laughing, deciding to take up stand up during a maternity leave, how it's rare to hear the story of teenage pregnancy from the perspective of someone who has actually experienced it, why it was necessary to be completely honest about her teenage years, the positive outcomes from something that seemed like a disaster at the time and the hopefully changing attitudes to this regular and fairly predictable event! It's time for a new patron reading group, and we've chosen 'Disaster Nationalism' by Richard Seymour. The gang gets started with the introduction, which means there is still time to become part of the group. If so, go to the Discord to join in.From the publisher:Liberal civilisation is in crisis - now is a time of monsters. While the spotlight often shines on the actions of charismatic right-wing leaders such as Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, defeating these people will not stem the tide behind them. They are the embodiment of profound forces that are rarely understood. With meticulous analysis and compelling storytelling, Richard Seymour delves into the ideologies fueling the contemporary right and distorting modern politics into something abhorrent and nihilistic. The battle against disaster nationalism is not just political; it is a struggle for our collective soul and the future of civilization.Send us a message (sorry we can't respond on here). My guest in this week's Book Club podcast is Ben Schott. The author of the world- (or downstairs-loo-) conquering Schott's Original Miscellany returns with Schott's Significa, a deeply reported and constantly surprising book in which he uses the private languages of various communities – from gondoliers to graffiti writers and from Swifties to sommeliers – as a way of understanding their worlds. Ben tells me about how the project came together, how he was inspired by the folklorists Iona and Peter Opie pinning the butterfly of playground games – and why doing the shoe-leather reporting yields results that you could never get from Google or ChatGPT. Tom Toro has just published a new collection of his New Yorker cartoons, “And to Think We Started as a Book Club.” The cartoons are from the last 15 years his cartoons have been running in the magazine and are grouped in sections, from Life, Love and Family to Work, Tech and Weird. Some comment on modern life wordlessly, like a teenager in the rain holding a mini-umbrella over his phone while he texts. Most combine graphics with commentary, like a man in a ragged suit sitting around a campfire with a few children captioned, “Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.” Many, like the one pictured above with angels making “snow humans,” are what Toro calls pure palette cleansers, a much needed break from weighty matters of the day. Toro joins us to discuss how he approaches his art and what it’s been like to comment on the last 15 years for one of the nation’s most illustrious magazines on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. The book is out today, and its official launch is at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 10, at Powell's Books.
Welcome to Autumn-ish Book Club! In this flash analysis series, we take an academic approach to some of the most talked-about books in Romantasy and fantasy today. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang. We explore how Wang deconstructs the idea of power and morality in dark academia fantasy, using her world of magic, empire, and forbidden knowledge to question who deserves to wield control, and at what cost. We analyze how the novel's complex relationship between science and sorcery blurs the line between progress and corruption, and how Wang's morally gray characters challenge traditional Romantasy archetypes. We also unpack the book's themes of institutional rot, ambition, and rebellion, and why Blood Over Bright Haven has become one of the most talked-about fantasy novels of the year. This season, we'll be covering: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker Where the Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem And when book club wraps up, get ready! Our next full literary analysis will dive into Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. If you're new here, we also have full seasons analyzing A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath, Throne of Glass, and Crown of Midnight. Go back and check those out to see how we break down metaphors, symbolism, narrative structure, and character arcs through multiple literary lenses. Plus, we're thrilled to announce our newest venture: The Subtext Society Journal—the first of its kind, dedicated to Romance, Romantasy, and fandom with an academic yet accessible voice. We're publishing original essays and thought pieces, and we encourage listeners to submit their own articles for a chance to be featured. If you love Sarah J. Maas, M.L. Wang, and deep Romantasy analysis, you're in the right place. First time author Jay Nachman has accomplished something special. His new book, Graham Parker's Howlin' Wind tells the origin story of how the great Graham Parker came to be the songwriter we know him to be and how that first album with the Rumour came to be. Starting from his pre-fame days in the coastal town of Deepcut. we learn of Graham's blue-collar upbringing and how the fates of him and the band Brinsley Schwarz came together to form a perfect team. Jay's been good to the Hustle over the years as a PR rep for many prior guests, but this time he brings on Graham himself to discuss the book. Enjoy! The year is 1997, the height of the Britpop era, and Stelfox has his eyes on promotion. He still believes that what he was right and that he committed no sin, but only an error. He considers his choice of a confession the result of a weakness rather than a metaphorical resurrection. The other prisoners don't like him, but they adore Sonya. While Raskolnikov is ill, he has a dream that a virus is sweeping across Russia. The virus causes its victims to suffer from a madness that causes each of them to think of themselves the sole possessor of truth. People can't get along and tear each other apart. Throughout Raskolnikov's imprisonment, Sonya comes to visit, sitting outside of his window where he can see her. One day, she manages to meet him outside. They sit and hold hands. Previously, Raskolnikov felt repulsed at such actions, but now he feels different. He feels collapses in tears and embraces her. They both realise that he truly loves her. They decide to wait out the remaining seven years of his sentence together. He starts to read a copy of The New Testament that he asked Sonya for. He feels at one with her. The narrator closes the novel by stating that what happened to Raskolnikov after his time in prison is the matter of a different story.SEO Stuff that I don't want to do lol...Welcome to this narration of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's masterpiece, bringing you another chapter of this incredible literary classic. In this literary fiction reading, we explore the depths of Russian literature as the a desperate young Russian man, Raskolnikov, plans the perfect crime - the murder of a despicable pawnbroker, an old woman who no one will mourn. RHLSTP Book Club #154 - Entitled - Richard talks to Andrew Lownie about his meticulous and explosive book about Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson and more, Entitled. They chat about the process of getting this book to print and the surprises and revelations that are sometimes quite casually dropped in, how it's easy to feel sorry for Andrew for his bizarre childhood where he had no boundaries, but harder to feel sorry for him when you read all the stupid, selfish and criminal things he has done as an adult. Also the scandalous grifting and Romanov style spending and waste, the Epstein files and the many reasons why more of the victims have not come forward, how easy it is to discover the lies that Andrew has told and the truth about the famous photo, whether Andrew lives in fear after writing a book like this, whether the monarchy can survive this scandal and how much more there is to come out. Also what it says about the way business is run in the world and the utter stupidity and depravity of so many (usually men) in important positions who didn't seem to realise that they were being trapped and could be blackmailed. Also the truth behind the Newsnight interview and who really did the work for it and how Andrew was stupid enough to think it had gone well. Plus the many instances where he found himself able to sweat. This is an extraordinary book which you really should read.Buy it here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/entitled-the-rise-and-fall-of-the-house-of-york-andrew-lownie/b66b23561541b2d1SUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE See details of the RHLSTP TOUR DATES Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. Sam Leith's guest on this week's Book Club podcast is the historical novelist Philippa Gregory. In her gripping new book Boleyn Traitor, Philippa seeks to rescue Jane Boleyn from the vast condescension of history. She tells Sam how fiction allows her to make plausible speculations about the gaps in the record, how she works to make the Tudors speak to us in language we can recognise, where Henry VIII went wrong — and what the Tudor court's descent into tyranny has to say to us about our own age.Produced by James Lewis. As Trump declares a highly illegal “war on drug cartels” to distract from the Epstein Files, let's turn instead to a much-needed source of inspiration: Harriet Tubman. Described by her first biographer and friend Sarah Hopkins Bradford as “clairvoyant,” Tubman offers timeless lessons in resilience, strategy, and hope under brutal oppression. If you're looking for concrete ways to resist life under a chaos-weapon Russian asset, this week's bonus episode of Gaslit Nation is for you! We share an excerpt from our Book Club discussion of Harriet, the Moses of Her People by Bradford, a children's author who helped preserve Tubman's legacy. We also examine the asymmetrical warfare waged by today's nihilists–and no, we don't mean the ones in Congress–but the “lone shooters” who are actually working together to stage “performance shootings” for one another for a growing outlet for their despair and rage. Trump's government shutdown certainly doesn't help. Look for the full recording of this week's salon and Read & Resist book club discussion on Monday morning, along with the Zoom link for Monday's salon at 4pm ET. Our salons are a place to sharpen strategy, share solidarity, and to remember that you're not losing your mind: things really are that bad. And because despair is what the nihilists want, we're throwing a Gaslit Nation Halloween Party with Sister District. Costumes optional, democracy mandatory. We'll be fighting for must-win Virginia races, and yes, you should RSVP. Because if Harriet Tubman can face down the unimaginable, you can probably survive a Zoom party. We're closing out this season of All My Relations with something new and something we're deeply proud of: the launch of our Author Talk series — the first step in the All My Relations + NDN Girls Book Club.In this debut Author Talk, Matika and Temryss sit down with poet and memoirist Sasha LaPointe (Upper Skagit, Nooksack), whose work explores trauma, healing, punk rock, and the power of ancestral memory. Together, they dive into Sasha's acclaimed books Red Paint and Thunder Song, weaving in stories of lineage, belonging, and the courage it takes to write the things we're told not to say. This tender conversation is an intimate exploration of Sasha's life as an author, where we deep dive into storytelling as a form of Indigenous resistance and remembrance, and the challenges of writing through trauma with clarity and care. Sasha reflects on what it means to be a prolific Indigenous woman author and, reveals the hidden histories beneath the tulip fields of the Skagit Valley, and shares how the stories of her ancestors—and sea maidens—still live in her writing and spirit. This episode is not only the season finale—this episode is big medicine, and it's also an invitation. We hope you'll read along with us, join our hybrid book discussions, and help us build a community that supports Indigenous authors. Episode 2704 - Vinnie Tortorich and Chris Shaffer discuss coffee culture, the decline of keto, and its popularity, climate concerns, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/09/the-decline-of-keto-episode-2704 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - The Decline of Keto Vinnie shares how he came up with his French Roast. (2:00) Chris was never part of the coffee shop culture. They discuss a recent discussion on X about coffee: It's heart-healthy! There have been other things that have been demonized, like meat; however, it's often based on conclusions from poor epidemiological studies. (12:15) Epidemiological studies can be unreliable, and data can be manipulated. (16:00) Nina Teicholz uncovered information in her research that exemplifies this in her book Big Fat Surprise, which is available in Vinnie's Book Club. (17:00) A small German study reports that the keto diet can help mental health. (18:00) Dr. Chris Palmer and Dr. Georgia Ede have both studied dietary lifestyle and its effects on depression and mental health. Global reports suggest the ketogenic diet is losing popularity. (24:00) Is it because of people getting tired of it, or is it GLP-1 use? They discuss another downside of GLP-1s, which is not learning to manage eating. The ketogenic diet is healthy for various reasons, including being shown to manage metabolic disease and provide mental health benefits. Companies are rebranding to relabel their products as high-protein, low-sugar, or gut-friendly. (32:00) If you are new to the podcast, Vinnie has a documentary about the fake meat industry entitled “Beyond Impossible.” (37:30) They discuss some of the content, including climate concerns. A Gallup survey indicates that there are 4% vegetarians and 1% vegans in the U.S. population. (45:00) Vinnie doesn't care what people eat; he wants them to eat healthily and avoid malnutrition. Someone to Blame They discuss other environmental arguments, such as how termites put out more methane than ruminants. (50:00) Various environmental arguments have changed and haven't come to fruition. There are concerns like monocropping, pollutants, and destroyed topsoil that are a concern. (55:00) John Wayne and his rugged individualism are apparently the cause of eating too much meat, according to some sources. If you are interested in the NSNG® VIP group, it will be reopening soon. One Battle After Another isn't just a film: it's a manifesto. Paul Thomas Anderson's cinematic masterpiece–a three hour long adventure that flies by thanks to dark humor and insane action set pieces–reimagines Harriet Tubman's legacy in a near future, turning Trump's “bad hombre” slur into a rallying cry. It dives into the raw debates: violence versus resistance, the power of holding space inside broken systems to shield and change them. Make time in your busy schedule to see it at the theater–don't wait for streaming. This film is a cultural event that celebrates America's long tradition of hard-fought antifascism, otherwise known as antifa. You're a bad hambre is the new May the Force Be With You. They discuss the important mentors in his life, as well as the crucial role that reading and writing played in helping him “get free.” He also talks about his work with people incarcerated and recently released from prison, and shares why his work and mission always emphasizes the importance of vulnerability and forgiveness, and what it really means to yield to joy.Support Shaka's message!
