Even for dedicated readers, it can be tricky to find the right summer reading formula. Our Summer Reading Guide is here to help, and today Anne is talking all about summer reading with our Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club community manager Ginger Horton. Ginger made her What Should I Read Next? debut in 2021 in Episode 283: Don't save the good stuff, and today she's back to talk about finding her way when it comes to summer reading. Ginger and Anne chat about a whole bunch of Summer Reading Guide books, past and present, and Anne recommends a few titles that speak to what Ginger's seeking for this summer's reading experiences. If you joined our Unboxing Party for the 2023 Summer Reading Guide last week, we hope you had as much fun as we did! If you missed it and want to grab your copy (and access to the recording of that delightful book party), you'll find that link as well as the full list of all the titles discussed today at our show notes page, whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/381.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this installment of the Book Club, we are joined by Clint Murphy and Ginger to discuss some of our favorite takeaways from Dan Ariely and Jeff Kreisler's "Dollars and Sense: How We Misthink Money and How to Spend Smarter," We often mention on this podcast the importance of actionable steps you must be willing to take while on the journey to FI, and this book is chalk-full of actionable tips and examples that could possibly be applied to many areas of your life, not just personal finance. While we know that personal finance is not unilateral and there are no correct steps and decisions that ensure success for everyone, we believe this book can help you better understand the decision making processes that goes into taking actionable steps on your FI journey!  Book Club Selection: "Dollars and Sense: How We Misthink Money and How to Spend Smarter" by Dan Ariely and Jeff Kreisler Timestamps: 1:21 - Introduction 4:20 - Reducing The Pain Of Paying 11:42 - Anchoring 19:01 - Opportunity Cost and Saying No 25:40 - Relative Value 30:20 - Why We Don't Understand Fairness and Value 38:49 - Sunk Costs 46:31 - Overvaluing What Your Already Have 50:07 - Spreading The Gap Between Stimulus and Response 57:21 - Conclusion Resources Mentioned In Today's Episode: The Growth Guide Podcast Clint's Twitter: @IAmClintMurphy FI is Fun The Great Man Within "Die With Zero: Getting All You Can from Your Money and Your Life" by Bill Perkins "Predictably Irrational, Revised and Expanded Edition: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions" by Dan Ariely Subscribe to The FI Weekly! Ambrose.  Some people—my favorite people—listen to most or even all of my podcasts, but my wizbang analytics tell me that while many listeners tune in on a regular basis, they don't catch every installment of Muscle for Life and thus miss out on insights that could help them do at least a little better inside and outside the gym. That's why I do “best of” episodes that contain a few of the most practical and compelling ideas, tips, and moments from the more popular episodes I've published over the years. This way, you can learn interesting insights that you might have otherwise missed and find new episodes of the show to listen to. Once my tear ducts could no longer produce any more tears, I immediately had to find out who was behind this beautiful show.  Tembi is a New York Times best-selling author, TV producer, actor, and screenwriter. Her memoir, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home, is a 2019 Reese's Book Club pick and NYT bestseller. Alongside Hello Sunshine, Tembi and Attica adapted the book as a limited series for Netflix, which trended in the top 10 globally in 84 countries for weeks on end following its October 2022 release. Attica is an award-winning screenwriter, TV producer, and novelist. She recently co-created and served as showrunner on From Scratch. Other screen credits include Little Fires Everywhere, When They See Us, and Empire. Locke is also NY-Times best-selling author of five novels: Heaven, My Home; Bluebird, Bluebird; Pleasantville; The Cutting Season; and Black Water Rising. They are delightful humans, astute creators and I can't wait to watch their star continue to rise! We are so excited to introduce you to Kerri Maher, the brilliant author of our latest book club pick, 'The Paris Bookseller.' Kerri is a rising star in the literary world, known for her captivating historical fiction that transports readers to different times and places. Kerri is the author of several critically acclaimed novels, including 'The Kennedy Debutante' and 'The Girl in White Gloves,' which have been praised for their historical detail and complex characters. In ‘The Paris Bookseller', Kerri takes us to post-WWI Paris, where Maher brings to life Sylvia Beach, the founder of the bookstore Shakespeare and Company. 'The Paris Bookseller' is a tribute to the power of literature and the strength of women. Who am I to write about these people? I'm just some housewife with five unpublished novels in my attic. And two writer friends from very different parts of my writing life responded to that comment in almost exactly the same way. They were like, ‘but Kerri, this is your novel, isn't it? I was and that was very liberating to me.” - Kerri Maher “I've really had to embrace representing real people and real time periods. Yes,I want to absolutely do right by them. I want to kind of represent the truth of their essence.. But I also have to cop to the fact and respect the fact that these are my versions of these people.” - Kerri Maher   Kerri's Links Kerri's website Kerri's Instagram Kerri's Facebook Kerri's Twitter Books & Resources Mentioned in This Episode The Kennedy Debutante book by Kerri Maher The Girl in White Gloves book by Kerri Maher All You Have to Do Is Call book by Kerri Maher The Paris Wife book by Paula McClain A Moveable Feast book by Ernest Hemingway Ulysses book by James Joyce  Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow book by Gabrielle Zevin The House of Eve book by Sadeqa Johnson The Midnight Library by Matt Haig   Connect with Jen! These are our opinions and we hope to teach others how stigmatizing language damages us and the people who love those of us with BPD. We also point out some of the benefits of this book. This mini-series is NOT a shit on this book, nor is it a recommendation of this book.       If you have ever thought “wouldn't it be great if there was one place to find all things sober” look no further. Alysse Bryson is the creator of the online magazine The Sober Curator. She is also a woman in long-term recovery who recently celebrated 17 years of freedom from alcohol. Alysse shares her journey from the anonymous rooms of AA to ‘recovering out loud' and becoming a spokesperson for all of us who are walking a similar path. Alysse discovered that there was not ‘one version' of recovery. She lived her alcohol-free life quietly but found that she was often a sought after resource for friends and family. Then, during the pandemic, she made a shift from protecting her own story to ‘recovering out loud'. She credits her time and experience in sobriety to allowing her to identify ‘when she could be helpful' and why moving front and center was the next right move.  With her background in media and print, Alysse launched The Sober Curator in August of 2020. The Sober Curator is an online magazine that features a variety of contributing writers and a content library that includes: Lifestyle, Entertainment, Happy Every Hour, Travel and The Spiritual Gangster. In this excerpt from their May 5 book club recap episode, the Ladies (re)announce their next pick for the Lutheran Ladies' Book Club: C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength.    From the publisher's description:   The final book in C.S. Lewis's acclaimed science fiction Space Trilogy, which follows Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra, concludes the adventures of the matchless Dr. Ransom.    Now, the dark forces that have been repulsed in Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra are massed for an assault on planet Earth. Word is that the mighty wizard Merlin has come back to the land of the living after many centuries, holding the key to ultimate power for the force that can find him and bend him to its will. A sinister technocratic organization is gaining power throughout Europe, with a plan to “recondition” society, and it is up to Ransom and his friends to stop this threat by applying age-old wisdom to a new universe dominated by science. The two groups struggle to a climactic resolution that brings the Space Trilogy to a magnificent, crashing conclusion.    Written during the dark hours immediately before and during World War II, C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy stands alongside such works as Albert Camus's The Plague and George Orwell's 1984 as a timeless classic, beloved by succeeding generations as much for the sheer wonder of its storytelling as for the significance of its moral concerns.  Click to learn more about C. With Bran and Rickon dead, and no children conceived between him and Jeyne, he's considering Jon Snow. Cat points out that Jon is a brother of the Night's Watch, so can't hold lands or titles. Mean Booker Michelle B told us to read the NYT bestseller because “the premise sounds enticing… this totally goes off the rails and was a complete disappointment.” Wrong Place Wrong Time (a misleading title), spent 5 weeks on the bestseller list and was a Reese Witherspoon club pick in 2022. It's got time travel, a murderous nerd son, and mom guilt. So if it sucks, how did it get so popular??We dive in with our special guests, Kelli McAdams and Susan Reach of the super fun Book Squad Goals podcast.Mean Book Club is four ladies (UCB, BuzzFeed, College Humor, Impractical Jokers) who read, discuss and whine about NYT bestselling books that have questionable literary merit. It's fun. It's cathartic. It's perfect for your commute. Today's guest loves to travel, and since she hasn't been doing quite as much of that in recent years, she's relied on books to take her to a wide range of destinations.Laurel Korwin is a wife, toddler mom, and software engineer who lives in San Francisco, and she's found her work in code overlaps nicely with her love of reading. While she reads a range of genres, Laurel has a particular affection for a certain kind of story that lets her travel to otherwise unaccessible times and places. Anne and Laurel have a great conversation about how Laurel came to identify this reading niche and what it's meant for her reading life. Laurel shares some of her favorite "impossible" destinations, while Anne recommends a handful of titles to take Laurel on new journeys this summer.See the full list of books mentioned today over at our show notes page, at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/379.Summer Reading Guide news! What you need to know about the 2023 Summer Reading Guide, coming May 18th, the blog post I mention in today's episode. You can also learn more about how to get the guide, what's happening with Unboxing, and preorder your copy at https://members.modernmrsdarcy.com/2023-unboxing/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

My new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs came out last month, and one of the greatest pieces of feedback I've already received is that it would make a great book club pick!  I agree wholeheartedly - I envisioned both of my books being read with a friend, partner, or group. Which is exactly why I offered a book club as a preorder bonus and why I chose The Life Council as the April book club pick for Secret Stuff (my membership community).  JOIN SECRET STUFF HERE Today's episode is a live replay of the Secret Stuff book club meeting. (Recorded and replayed with permission.) All the meetings for Secret Stuff are held on zoom, with optional participation from members, and this the best work I'm doing online right now. We talk about all kinds of things together (not just books) and it's just so meaningful to connect twice a month with this community. So you can imagine how extra special it was to meet and discuss The Life Council. If you haven't read The Life Council, you'll still appreciate this candid conversation about friendship, including our struggles and joys. If you've already read The Life Council and are ready to talk about it, I hope this episode is a stand-in for the types of conversations I hope will come out of reading this book.   FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: Platonic by Marisa G.
