Welcome back to another episode of Women Petpreneurs! In today's Book Club edition, host Mary Oquendo is joined by Denise Heroux as they dive into the colorful world of "Surrounded by Idiots" by Thomas Erikson. Mary and Denise share their candid thoughts on the book's unique approach to understanding personalities through color-coding—red, yellow, green, and blue—and how these insights can reshape everything from work dynamics and leadership to our relationships at home.Along the way, they laugh about their own personality colors (spoiler: neither of them is a “blue”), swap stories about work and family, and discuss how knowing both strengths and weaknesses can help petpreneurs navigate staff management and difficult clients. With plenty of real-world examples, a few confessions of organizational chaos, and practical advice for leaders and business owners, this episode brings both wisdom and fun to the world of personality assessment.Whether you manage a team, serve clients, or simply want to better understand yourself and those around you, you won't want to miss this down-to-earth conversation about what it really means to be “surrounded by idiots”—and why that just might be your superpower.

Send us a textToday we're wrapping up our deep dive videos for our newest miniseries covering the Anne of Green Gables 8-book collection by L.M. Montgomery. Anne is now a mother of six, navigating a reality in which herself, her husband, and all of her children exist in World War One Canada. What does this mean for the country, the world, and more specifically, the Blythe family and the small community they live in? We're here to give you the “411” on these lesser-read books in this series, and answer the question of whether or not they're worth the read.In this episode we dive into books seven and eight: Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside - we've moved past the well-known perspective of Anne Shirley and are now seeing the world through the eyes of her children, and more specifically, her youngest daughter Rilla. What do we think about the differences, and how do we currently feel about the focus slowly shifting away from Anne and predominantly onto her daughter? Who were our favorite and least favorite characters and plot points? Do we think these books carry on the feminist legacy of the more popular installations, and how did we feel about reading a “war book?”Check out our kickoff episode all about what the Bildungsroman is, why women and girl's stories are so important for everyone to read, and how Montgomery expertly uses this book series to critique social and political issues of the early 1900's, with an emphasis on women's roles in society. We also provide a bit of context by discussing Montgomery's life, and the political climate in Canada when this story takes place. Coming of age tales can be so much more than simple children's books. We're here to discover why! Listen on for our reviews of the final books: seven and eight, our deep dive reactions, and important things we learned about history because of this book. Like where daylight savings time comes from, where the draft is legal, and why several pages of Rilla of Ingleside were redacted until 2010.And stick around for next week - the final Anne episode where we rank the books and all of the 1980's movie adaptations! Check out our Anne of Green Gables Playlist | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLmUGmwxrZs&list=PLHf5v0KOoZMk43z5cbKp6b9WVMXwsYWki&pp=gAQB SHOP OUR NEW BESTIES and the BOOKS X CROW Merch! | * https://besties-and-the-books-shop.fourthwall.comDon't be shy, subscribe! Welcome to Autumn-ish Book Club! In this flash analysis series, we take an academic approach to some of the most talked-about books in Romantasy and fantasy today. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya. We explore how this YA fantasy is masterfully crafted, offering a rich and authentic representation of Mexican culture, and why it's so refreshing to have a standalone story that delivers a complete, satisfying ending. This season, we'll be covering: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker Where the Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem And when book club wraps up, get ready! Our next full literary analysis will dive into Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. Shrouded in myth and mystery, Gilbert Jessop's 76-ball century is an English cricket record that has stood since 1902. Renowned cricket journalist and historian Simon Wilde has attempted to capture the celebratory mood of the nation that was the backdrop to Jessop's stunning knock. With the brutal Boer War having ended and a new Monarch in place, it was an exciting time of change and advancement in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, the cricket team hadn't got the memo and having already relinquished The Ashes, England turned to their ultimate impact player to restore some pride. What transpired has gone down in history, with Jessop leading a remarkable run chase which wouldn't look out of place under Ben Stokes. How many balls did he really face? It's 1963, four housewives living in the same suburb start a book club. Margaret dreams of becoming a writer, Charlotte an artist, Bitsy a vet, and Viv would like to return to nursing. They all have kids except the youngest member, Betsy, who desperately wants to be a mother. Charlotte says she will join the book club only if they read The Feminine Mystique. This sent up a red flag for me because of preconceived notions about the women's movement, which brought both good and bad.  Anything that demeans God's role of motherhood makes me wonder if the author was blessed with children. After going down that rabbit hole, I discovered she had three children. In the book,  How to Read a Book, the authors caution about forming an opinion before finishing a text, that is powerful advice. I learned a lot. What surprised me was that a married woman wasn't able to open a checking account without her husband's signature. I also got an up close and personal glimpse of overbearing husbands and it wasn't pretty. I had the opposite growing up, my dad never talked down to my mom, she lamblasted him.The story is mostly about Margaret and how the past haunts her. Margaret's marriage hits some bumps when she starts writing a column for A Woman's Place, which Walt, her husband, refers to as her jobette. When honesty clears the lies he's been believing, he makes an about face!Don't grab a cigarette or a stinger, just sip some tea and enjoy the recap on The Book Club for Troublesome Women : )

The two talk, but in an elusive manner, ending with Raskolnikov theatening to kill Svidrigailov if he uses his recent discoveries to force Dunya into marrying him. Svidrigailov tells Raskolnikov that he has enjoyed watching him, and then starts to talk about his life. Raskolnikov, thinking Svidrigailov a worthless, depraved man, gets up to leave, but his advisory persuades him to stay by mentioning Dunya. SEO Stuff that I don't want to do lol...Welcome to this narration of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's masterpiece, bringing you another chapter of this incredible literary classic. In this literary fiction reading, we explore the depths of Russian literature as the a desperate young Russian man, Raskolnikov, plans the perfect crime - the murder of a despicable pawnbroker, an old woman who no one will mourn. It isn't just, he argues, for a man of of genius to commit a crime if it will ultimately benefit humanity. Real Life This week's episode is stacked—like a plate at Boar & Barley (Ben barely survived, oh God). Speaking of Milwaukee, Devon had some things to say, and Steven dove into Rick and Morty season 8 on HBO—has the quality shifted? Plus, Marvel's Thunderbolts snuck its way into the convo. Future or Now  Devon brought us back to the Bob-verse world with Dennis E. Taylor's Flybot. He called it “enjoyable” (which is Devon for a glowing review). Near-future tech, asteroid mining, eco-terrorists, and a scrappy AI robot pieced together from spare parts—this one's a cozy puzzle-box of sci-fi. We also asked: is this “Casual Sci-Fi”? “Cozy Sci-Fi”? Someone trademark that. Ben, meanwhile, shouted “Star Trek? Hell yeah, brother” and broke down Noah Hawley's almost-made Star Trek film that would've tied directly into The Next Generation. Read more here. Steven brought his A-game with Alien: Earth episode 5—he swears it's the best Alien movie in a long time. High praise. Book Club  Patron Renee joined us! She told us about her latest comic-con adventures and stuck with us for the whole episode (you love to see it). This week we read “Bears Discover Fire” by Terry Bisson—a story that scooped up basically all the awards back in the early '90s (Hugo, Nebula, Sturgeon, Locus, Asimov's Readers, you name it). It feels like something straight out of Haruki Murakami—quiet, strange, and deeply human. Oh, and yes, we did wonder aloud: what if it was Banthas Discover Fire?

In this conversation, womanist theologian Selina Stone reflects on the hidden ways power is shaped by theology — and how theology, in turn, can be shaped by power. Drawing on her book A Heavy Yoke: Theology, Power and Abuse in the Church, she explores how divine calling, servant leadership, and spiritual authority can all become tools of control, especially in charismatic and evangelical settings. But Selina also gestures toward another way — one rooted in embodied wisdom, communal discernment, and a God who shares power rather than hoards it. Following the interview, Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Joy Brooks reflect on their own encounters with unhealthy uses of power in church, the theologies that enabled it, and the green flags that might help us discern healthier communities.
