In this episode of Badlands Book Club, CannCon and Ashe in America explore Chapter 6 of Overruled by Justice Neil Gorsuch and Janie Nitze, delving into the tension between ordered liberty and oppressive regulation. They highlight stories of ordinary Americans, foster parents sidelined over faith, hair braiders and eyebrow threaders crushed by arbitrary licensing laws, and recovering addicts devastated by pandemic isolation. The reading underscores how overreaching rules, from cosmetology mandates to emergency COVID edicts, systematically erode community bonds and self-reliance. The hosts reflect on the paradox of laws meant to protect freedom but increasingly used to control dissent, shut down small businesses, and undermine civic trust. Drawing connections to modern ideological warfare and the deliberate centralization of authority, they share frustrations and cautionary lessons. The conversation closes with a call to reclaim sovereignty by resisting demoralization, defending the right to associate, and standing firm against bureaucratic overreach.

Dr. Owen Anderson, Head Pastor of Christ the King Reformed Church and professor of philosophy and religious studies at Arizona State University joins me to talk about his latest book Samson: a Biblical Hero.We have been taught in sermons and Sunday School to treat Samson as just a deeply flawed and naive man full of lust and ego. Dr. Anderson explains that, despite Samson's imperfections, we may be reading between the lines to accuse him of things he may not have done.Dr. Anderson argues that a Biblical understanding of Samson as a strong and humble hero points to Christ. Rather than blindly follow influencers like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate who may resemble more the mixed bag stereotype of Samson we've been taught, Dr. Anderson teaches that Christian young men should see the Biblical Samson himself as a better role model.Dr. Owen Anderson:Dr. Owen Anderson's personal website [media appearances]Christ the King Reformed ChurchArizona State University profileDr. A's SubstackDr. Owen Anderson's YouTube channelFox and Friends interview about DEI lawsuit with ASUNewsmax Carl Higbie FRONTLINE interview about DEI lawsuit with ASURobert Kiyosaki interview on The Rich Dad Radio Show about free speech (March 1, 2023)Robert Kiyosaki interview on The Rich Dad Radio Show about free speech (July 26, 2023)Dr. Owen Anderson on PragerU's The Book Club with Michael KnowlesPragerU 5-minute video: The Beginning of WisdomDr. Owen Anderson's Amazon Author page*** Please contribute to the Hurricane relief fund for A.M. Raskolnikov pretends to be feeling better and he apologises to Zosimov and Razumikhin for his behaviour. He also apologises to his mother and sister, a gesture that touches everyone in the room after his outburst the previous day. Raskolnikov confesses to having given his money away to Marmeladov's widow, and asks his mum's forgiveness again, saying that she would have done the same thing. The calm air starts to annoy Raskolnikov and he becomes anxious again. He demands that Dunya reject Luzhin, saying that the engagement is sordid. She fights back, saying that she has done and is doing nothing wrong, stating that she is "guilty of no one's death." This comment nearly makes Raskolnikov feint, but he recovers. Dunya then explains the test that she has in place for Luzhin, to confront him with Raskolnikov and Razumikhin at supper. Raskolnikov agrees to come.
