Endless scrolling doesn't sharpen your thinking. You probably can't remember 95% of what you just consumed, yet it still takes your time, attention, and even your money. In this solo episode of Habits & Hustle, I share why I created The Habits & Hustle Book Club and what pushed me to build something that encourages completion instead of constant consumption. We break down how a clear deadline builds accountability, why finishing a book strengthens follow-through in other areas of your life, and how using those spare 10 to 20 minutes to read instead of scroll can improve your focus over time. Tune in to learn how the book club works, what kinds of books we're reading, and why finishing what you start changes more than just your reading list. RHLSTP Book Club #171 - John & Paul - A Love Story in Songs - Rich chats to author Ian Leslie about his hit book about Lennon and McCartney. Amongst other things they discuss why no other Beatles book has effectively asked why as well as what and when, whether Lee and Herring were more successful than the Beatles, how this book sends you back to the songs to remind you how truly inspirational and inventive they are, how death seemed to stalk John Lennon and whether Paul died in 1966 and Jane Asher just went along with the replacement (and the more likely hypothesis that there were always loads of Pauls, why Paul said “It's a drag” when Lennon died, how Lennon and McCartney are similar to Peter Cook and Dudley Moore and much more.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/john-and-paul-a-love-story-in-songs-ian-leslie/7751121SUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. This week, the hosts revisit the cultural chaos of early 2000s reality television through the lens of the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model on Netflix. What a time to be alive! From the era that brought viewers Flavor of Love, I Love New York, Jersey Shore, The Real World, and Paris Hilton's reality TV dominance, the conversation explores how shock value, humiliation, and boundary-pushing became entertainment staples. At the center of the discussion is Tyra Banks' assertion that she was simply producing the content audiences wanted more of. The hosts critically examine that defense, questioning whether demand absolves creators of accountability. They unpack how reality television shaped beauty standards, normalized problematic behavior, and blurred the line between competition and exploitation. From controversial challenges to moments that feel deeply uncomfortable in hindsight, the episode explores what responsibility producers hold when entertainment has real-world impact.*Please be advised this episode is intended for adult audiences and contains adult language and content. It's The Stacks Book Club day, and we're joined by New York Times bestselling romance novelist Jasmine Guillory to discuss Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. Set in 1858, this book follows Hester Wyatt, a conductor on Michigan's Underground Railroad, who is tasked with protecting Galen Vachon, a vital member of the Northern network. As he recovers from his injuries, their initial clash gives way to a deepening romance, forcing them to navigate their relationship while fighting for freedom. Today, we go through the book, plot point by plot point, to discuss how Beverly Jenkins skillfully infuses history into the narrative, the book's tropes, and the relationship between the author and reader in romance novels. There are spoilers in this episode.Make sure you listen to the end to hear what our March book club pick will be!You can find everything we discuss on today's show on The Stacks website: https://www.thestackspodcast.com/2026/2/25/ep-413-indigoConnect with Jasmine Guillory: Website | Instagram | Threads | Twitter/XConnect with The Stacks: Instagram | Threads | Shop | Patreon | Goodreads | Substack | Youtube | SubscribeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we're diving into Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and its film adaptation. Kyleigh completely fell in love with the novel, while Hannah and Micaela admired its depth and intensity, even if it didn't quite make their favorites list. We unpack our very different reading experiences, share all our thoughts on the movie (which we surprisingly loved!), and chat about book-to-film adaptations in general—what works, what doesn't, and why some stories translate better to the screen than others. It's moody, dramatic, and full of opinions. Just the way we like it. We'll be reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir in the month of February! Grab your copy today! In this episode, I introduce you to three fictional patients whose stories expose the fatal flaws in this narrative. Through Madison's diabetes diagnosis, Mason's struggle with sleep apnea struggle, and Morgan's joint pain dismissal, I dismantle the logical fallacies that confuse association with causation. The truth is simple. Your weight didn't make you sick - but being blamed for it, denied treatment, and forced into weight cycling absolutely will. Eight years after her bestseller 'An American Marriage,' Tayari Jones has written a new novel, 'Kin,' set in the Jim Crow South. It follows two girls, Vernice and Annie, who grow up next door to each other without their mothers. That shared wound binds them and carries them through adulthood and across class lines. Jones says the idea for the book came from her own experience of losing a friend — and the particular kind of grief that the world doesn't always recognize. She spoke with Tonya Mosley about female friendship, growing up with civil rights activist parents, and the writing class that changed her life.'Kin' was just selected by Oprah's Book Club. Also, critic David Bianculli gives his take on the latest TV shows.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Host Jason Blitman talks to Oprah's Book Club pick Tayari Jones about Kin, her long-awaited new novel, nearly a decade in the making.Conversation highlights include:
This week I discuss player best practices presented in the Daggerheart core book. Keeping these in mind will enhance any tabletop RPG you play, not just Daggerheart. The first, and I'd say fundamental, best practice is to embrace danger. At the heart of this and the other best practices is to choose the interesting choice, the choice that makes a better story, not necessarily the optimal or most tactical or strategic choice. We don't “win” at these games by always succeeding, never failing. We win by creating an awesome story together. A story where the PCs always succeed is a pretty boring story. The key to making this all work at your table is to establish and maintain trust among the GM and players. And a big part of building and maintaining that trust is how you handle PC death at your table. Daggerheart has some really great guidelines for all of this. I also go over how hit points, death moves, and scars work in Daggerheart.Play Daggerheart with Me on Start Playing Games.Sign up for my newsletter.Subscribe via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify.Check out my sci-fi novel, Critical Balance.Have you read Critical Balance? The discussion reveals that effects are composable operations that encapsulate side effects and defer execution, giving developers the right handles to manage unpredictability through compiler-checked types. The authors explain how ZIO tracks three critical types: outputs, failures, and environmental requirements, enabling better testing with mock clocks and random number generators. They share their intentional avoidance of intimidating functional programming terminology like "monads" proving you don't need mathematical foundations to understand effects. The conversation covers effect systems' expansion beyond Scala into TypeScript, Kotlin, and new languages like Unison and Roc, and how their collaborative writing process with strict constraints like 47-character line limits - created a coherent 100-page book readable in portrait mode on your phone.RECOMMENDED BOOKSBill Frasure, Bruce Eckel, James Ward • Effect Oriented Programming • https://amzn.to/4sO6wLVBruce Eckel & Svetlana Isakova • Atomic Kotlin • https://amzn.to/4qT1gEQBruce Eckel • Thinking in C++ • https://amzn.to/4qnrIGWAndrew Harmel-Law • Facilitating Software Architecture • https://amzn.eu/d/5kZKVfUSam Keen • Clean Architecture with Python • https://amzn.to/4pBT5g0Eric Evans • Domain-Driven Design • https://amzn.to/3tnGhwmBlueskyTwitterInstagramLinkedInFacebookCHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUSJoin this channel to get early access to videos & other perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/joinLooking for a unique learning experience?Attend the next GOTO conference near you!

Episode 2766 - Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino discuss stopping food noise while being surrounded by processed foods, diet noise trends, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2026/02/stopping-food-noise-episode-2766 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Pure Coffee Club NSNG® Foods VILLA CAPPELLI EAT HAPPY KITCHEN YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - @FitnessConfidential Podcast Vinnie's workout videos are available to purchase! TO PURCHASE VINNIE'S WORKOUT VIDEOS, CLICK THIS LINK: https://vinnietortorich.com/workout Stopping Food Noise Today's topic is the conversation around "food noise." (3:30) The term has gained traction since GLP-1s became more popular. "Counting culture" has also contributed—people seek ways to accommodate unhealthy foods. (5:00) They discuss popular snack foods, cravings, and weight gain. The best thing you can do is not bring those types of food into the house. They share stories about ice cream and eating it on rare occasions. (16:00) If you are going to do "Life Into Living," save it for something truly good, not some dumb junk food. For example, have a gelato when you are in Italy. (19:00) Important note: If you want to stop food noise, do not eat the food that causes it. (22:00) Processed foods are meant to trigger cravings and addiction. When you switch to a low-carb diet, the food cravings often lessen over time and can even completely go away. (23:00) Going low-carb naturally mimics the effects of GLP-1 without side effects. Food has become political rather than just food. (31:00) Various diets have also become a type of food noise. People labeling themselves have gained an almost religious fervor. Subsidized crops are used as filler in processed foods; as a result, real, whole foods are more expensive. (35:00) They discuss Instacart and its impact on in-store grocery prices. (37:50) They discuss money, time, resources, and goals to eat healthy, quick meals. (41:00) Start doing things yourself and stop mailing it out to everyone else. (50:00) Vinnie shares a story from mentor Joe Dean about what it means to "take the garbage out." In this episode, Tim speaks with feminist theologian and author Meggan Watterson about the Gospel of Mary and the Acts of Paul and Thecla — early Christian texts that didn't make it into the New Testament. They explore what these stories reveal about the diversity of early Christianities, the formation of the biblical canon, and the ways women's voices were preserved, reshaped, or silenced. What does it mean that some communities treasured these texts enough to pass them on — and how might Christianity have looked if Mary and Thecla had been read alongside Paul and Peter? The conversation moves from history into questions of authority, embodiment, and discernment. Meggan reflects on what drew her to these texts and what she means by “inner authority,” while Tim probes the tension between personal revelation and communal accountability. Together they ask what kind of faith might emerge if we loosen our grip on a single master story without losing our grounding.Following the interview, Nomad hosts Tim and Joy reflect on growing up with a narrow vision of “the early church,” the uneasy relationship between canon and power, and what it means to reclaim inner authority without losing community.Interview starts at 14m 01sBooks, quotes, links →The creation of Nomad's thoughtful, ad-free content is entirely funded by our equally thoughtful and wonderful listeners. Sadly, BDSM month has to come to an end and what a way to end it. This time with a......summer camp??
Melody Beattie passed last year and I burst into tears on a livestream the moment I found out. She's been a spiritual mother to me, her books holding concepts patiently until I was awake enough. For HSPs, empaths, and recovering codependents and people-pleasers, this one matters. That sneaky bastard perfectionism will show up and expect us to fix all the things right now, yesterday even, and we don't have to pressurize-cook ourselves through healing that way. Gratitude turns what we have into enough and more, and for trauma survivors and sensitives whose nervous systems learned that life is war, her wisdom lands like a exhale: let go, let it be, let it happen. Worth is unchanging from the day you were born. Light and love. In this episode of The Tarot Diagnosis, I explore why asking better questions might be the most important tarot skill you can develop. As a psychotherapist, I often joke that I'm a “professional question asker.” It's half joke, half truth because the arc of a therapy session (sometimes even the arc of an entire therapeutic relationship) can hinge on one well-timed, well-crafted question. And I've come to realize the same is true in tarot. We spend so much time mastering card meanings, memorizing spreads, studying symbolism, and refining interpretations, but if the question we bring to the cards lacks depth, precision, or courage, even the most technically impressive reading can fall flat.In this episode, I explore:Why poorly crafted tarot questions limit insightHow to stop outsourcing your authority to the cardsHow Socratic questioning can deepen tarot readingsHow vertical arrow questioning (a cognitive therapy tool) applies to tarotI also walk you through a live exercise after pulling the Nine of Swords and the Three of Cups, to show how a surface-level question can evolve into something much more layered, reflective, and transformative. For example:The Nine of Swords goes from “What thoughts are plaguing me?” to “What story am I telling myself when I can't sleep?”The Three of Cups moves from “Where do I feel supported?” to “What feels vulnerable about needing other people?”And we explore something that often goes unnamed: tarot is inherently projective. The questions we ask are never neutral. They reveal our fears, our defenses, our comfort zones, and our blind spots. Sometimes, the most powerful question isn't the one we oh-so-confidently as…sometimes it's the one we hesitate or even refuse to say out loud.Ultimately, when we move beyond surface-level meanings and begin crafting deeper, open-ended tarot questions, we shift into deeper states of consciousness - and that's where tarot becomes not just a tool for “answers,” but a collaborator in our journey towards self-actualization.If you found this episode helpful, you'll love The Symposium - my membership community where we practice therapeutic tarot together in spaces like the Reading Room, the Book Club, monthly workshops, and meet ups.Want more of this type of tarot experience?
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen chapter 40, narrated by Isaac BirchallSubscribe on YT or Join the Book Club on Patreon and support me as an independent creator :Dhttps://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOFfvo05ElM96CmfsGsu3g/joinSummary:As soon as Colonel Brandon leaves, Mrs Jennings goes to Elanor and suggests that she knows exactly what he proposed to her. Elanor, though slightly confused by her choice of words, accepts the lady's praise for the Colonel. Mrs. Jennings talks too of knowing exactly where she shall find a happy couple and is confused by the Colonel's remarks about the house being a bad one. Before the conversation can be made clearer, Mrs. Jennings has to go, and Elanor begs her not to tell anyone of the news, as Edward needs to be told of the news first, which makes Mrs. Jenning's believe that Edward will be the one to marry the Colonel and Elanor. After Mrs. Jenning's leaves, Elanor sets to writing a letter to Edward, but before she can finish her correspondence, he walks through the door. There is a very awkward pause… they had not seen each other since his marriage was announced, and after more time passes, he says that Mrs. Jennings told him that Elanor had news to tell him. He is very grateful for the Colonel's news, and thanks Elanor more precisely, believing that it is really thanks to her that the position has been offered to him. He then asks for the Colonel's address, says goodbye, and goes to the man to give his thanks. Mrs. Jenning's then returns, and after some more giddy talking about the subject, Elanor corrects the lady's mistake. While initially disappointed she quickly laughs away the mistake and is again happy about the news.SEO stuff I don't want to do. Jane Austin's timeless classic Sense and Sensibility follows the story of two girls, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and their endeavors in love, marriage, and societal expectations. Love is not easy however, and Elinor finds her sense tested by her charming brother-in-law, while Marianne's sensibility brings her nothing but heartbreak.
It's a truth universally acknowledged. For this month's book club, we dig into issues of class, gentrification, prejudice, sisterhood, coming of age, family, home and love with Ibi Zoboi's 2019 novel Pride: A Pride and Prejudice Remix. Anney and Samantha share their different takes based on their differing familiarities with Jane Austen's work in this classic episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Hard-Hard is your "Why": what is the physical, emotional, spiritual goal, and working towards it. What does Bobby have as examples for what "Easy-Hard" means? (9:30) Bobby describes his health journey not just for weight loss but for overall wellness. (17:00) People are often afraid of hard things, and at the other end of the spectrum, others think that if you're not suffering, you're not working hard enough. (20:00) There is meaning in the middle: struggle doesn't need to mean suffering. Finding your why is important, but not for the reason of "keeping up with the Joneses." They discuss the meaning of "Riding the Tiger." (26:00) Vinnie prefers to be active because it helps open his mind to new ideas. (37:00) The longer you wait to start something, the harder it is to start at all, and the delay gets longer. (41:00) They discuss a type of "divine intervention." You have to find your own rhythm. (46:00) Don't buy into anyone else's dogma. (47:30) They discuss self-talk, beliefs, and visualization. (53:00) Don't let the world get in your way. (58:30) Always think about what's possible and don't let others discourage you! (1:03:00) Surround yourself with positive influences, not those who try to drag you down.
