The article examines learning that occurs through ball games in Swedish Physical Education and Health (PEH), challenging critiques that such activities overemphasise competition and performance. Drawing on observations and interviews with upper‑secondary students, the authors show that ball games foster both subject‑specific learning (skills, techniques, rules, and game understanding) and generic knowledge such as cooperation, care, fairness, and inclusion. Using a non‑affirmative theory of education, the study highlights that student participation and learning increase when competition is de‑emphasised and unfamiliar game forms are used, prompting a re‑articulation of learning objectives in PEH.CITE to the article:Modell, N., Gerdin, G., & Schenker, K. (8:00) This relates to GLP-1 in the fact that there is nothing you can do that doesn't cause a consequence somewhere else. (11:30) Vinnie discusses dealing with his second bout of cancer a couple of years ago. He is determined to be as active and healthy as possible. Eating strict NSNG seems to have helped him fight cancer more than if he had not been eating clean. (12:00) If you lose weight the old-fashioned way through proper eating, about 20-25% of your weight loss will be muscle. (16:00) However, that can be offset with exercise, particularly strength training. With GLP-1, a person will lose at least 40% of their muscle mass. (17:00) This matters because a lack of muscle contributes to all-cause mortality, and you can die sooner. Sarcopenia (natural muscle loss) occurs with age, typically starting around age 35, but it can be significantly slowed with strength training. (18:00) The number one drug Vinnie used to get asked about was statins, but now it's about GLP-1s. (21:00) If a person is losing a lot of muscle on GLP-1s, you can bet it's affecting their heart, because the heart is muscle. (25:00) Anna shares some info she's heard recently regarding Dr. Ben Bikman. (27:30) Some Thoughts About Fiber There is also debate about fiber. (36:00) They discuss myths about fiber and whether it is as necessary as others have claimed. Anna shares a story that makes her super happy about her cookbooks. (46:00) Vinnie is trying a week off from eating cheese, but he's wrapping up the week with Anna's Cheese Bites for the Super Bowl. (48:30) They conclude the episode with a discussion of discontinuing GLP-1s. Talk to your doctor for the proper protocol. If you decide to continue GLP-1s, please start strength training to offset muscle loss. American culture is a breeding ground for predator's like Jeffrey Epstein and his cohorts because the powerful are protected by corruption and our collective cowardice. The Epstein list reveals how predators curate alibis by surrounding themselves with people who'd never suspect, choosing bystanders as strategically as victims. American culture doesn't help because it sends contradictory sexual messages at young people, creating confusion predators exploit. Most bystanders who suspect abuse choose easy over right, justifying silence with "it's not my place" while children get hurt. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen chapter 38, narrated by Isaac BirchallSubscribe on YT or Join the Book Club on Patreon and support me as an independent creator :Dhttps://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOFfvo05ElM96CmfsGsu3g/joinSummary:Mrs. Jennings is full of praise for Edward after hearing the news of all that passed between his family and himself. The Dashwood girls are still recovering from the news, however. After a few more days pass, the weather is surprisingly very good, and the whole city seems to go to Kensington gardens, and Elanor and Mrs. Jenning's go to see them. After a few minutes, they come across Miss Anne Steele, who seems very pleased to see them. Mrs. Jennings begs Elanor to ask Anne about everything that passed between Edward and his family since they were kicked out. And after confirming that neither Lady Middleton nor Mrs. Jennings are upset with her or her sister, Anne goes to tell Elanor about everything that happened between Edward and her sister. Three days passed before Edward visited Lucy, he apparently stayed in an inn and gathered his thoughts. When he came to Lucy, he announced that he would understand if she broke the engagement off, as he now has no money, but Lucy said that she wouldn't. Anne proclaims that they are very happy together, and Edward intends to go into orders as soon a possible, after he finishes some business in Oxford. Anne then lets out that she was listening to this information from the other side of the door. Elanor is disgusted by Anne and tries to change the subject, but Anne continues on. Eventually she meets her friends again and leaves Elanor with Mrs. Jennings, to whom she recounts Anne's information to. The following morning Lucy sends a letter to Elanor, thanking her for he kindness, and tells her that she and Edward are very happy together, and asks that if she knows anyone looking for a curate, that she should put Edward forward for it…SEO stuff I don't want to do. Jane Austin's timeless classic Sense and Sensibility follows the story of two girls, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and their endeavors in love, marriage, and societal expectations. Love is not easy however, and Elinor finds her sense tested by her charming brother-in-law, while Marianne's sensibility brings her nothing but heartbreak.

RHLSTP Book Club #169 - This Way Up: When Maps Go Wrong (and Why It Matters) - Rich meets one of the Map Men, Jay Foreman to talk about the fantastic book he's written along with Mark Cooper-Jones about maps and what happens when they go wrong. They chat about the murky story of how the Map Men got together, why they are so many stories around maps, why Richard couldn't watch Tiswas in Cheddar and how young people don't know how lucky they are, trying to navigate through London using a map of Paris, how an inset box on a map affected the US/Canada border, the non-existent town that suddenly came into existence (or did it?) navigating by testicles and medieval satnavs. Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/this-way-up-when-maps-go-wrong-and-why-it-matters-map-men/b6f8a72cb55c007bSUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. In this jaw-dropping edition of Dirty Little Secret from The Jubal Show, one caller admits to a surprising relationship that started at their grandmother’s book club — and quickly crossed unexpected lines. What began as a simple ride home turned into something much more complicated… and potentially life-changing. Is it love, opportunism, or just chaos?
What really goes into a presidential visit? In this episode of Book Club, Michael sits down with Jean Becker and Tom Collamore to discuss their new book, "Don't Tell the President: The Best, Worst, and Mostly Untold Stories from Presidential Advance." From George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama, Becker and Collamore pull back the curtain on the high-stakes world of “advance” work — the behind-the-scenes operatives who plan every detail of a president's public appearances. The conversation features unforgettable stories, including the controversy over a papal backdrop, the infamous Dukakis tank photo, assassination attempts on President Ford, a royal riser mishap with Queen Elizabeth II, and even Smerconish's own unexpected detour into a Brussels brothel while advancing Vice President Bush. It's a candid, entertaining, and revealing look at the moments that shaped presidential history — and the unsung professionals who made (and sometimes nearly broke) them. Original air date 11 February 2026. The book was published on 3 February 2026. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. UNLOCKED from our Patreon page, it's the "The Science of Consequences" Book Club! Interested in more Book Clubs? Want to vote on what we read next? Feeling FOMO at getting this a full year late? Wish your 2.5 CEs for listening to the episode were FREE??? Join us on Patreon to get all of our episodes a week early, access to these bonus episodes, plus other goodies. As a follow-up from our episode on storytelling, we our Winter 2024 Book Club explored Dr. Susan Schneider's 2012 opus, The Science of Consequences, as an example of taking the hugely important concept of learning through consequences and making it understandable to the wider public. But hey, while she was at it, why not explain how consequences impact evolution, or gene expression, or social improvement strategies. And add multiple examples of how consequences work in labs and the natural environment across a wide range of human and non-human species. And make it fun to read! But before our crack Book Club squad dives into the nitty gritty of the content, we had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Schneider herself to ask how she managed to take millions of years of the effects of consequences and pack it into a 300+ page book as well as how her study of consequences informs her current work as a climate change policy advocate. This episode is available for 2.5 LEARNING CEUs. Content discussed in this episode: Schneider, S.M. (2012). The science of consequences: How they affect genes, change the brain, and impact our world. After last week's Book Club discussion on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it's time to get back to talking about comics, TV shows, and the other nerdy topics our wives are tired of hearing us talk about. You're welcome! The new Wonder Man series dropped on Disney+ at the end of January. We have all watched it, mostly loved it, and have lots of thoughts to share on Simon and Trevor. John got caught up on The Beauty over on FX/Hulu. People, you need to be watching this show. Heck, you can get your significant others to watch it, too. Just don't mention right away that it's based on a comic book from friends Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley. Kevin Maguire was in the news over at Bleeding Cool this past week. And then he was in the news again the next day. Listen in for the details! Don't panic, but Planet Comicon is coming up soon. We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. In this week's Book Club podcast my guest is Eric Schlosser, the investigative journalist whose Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal is being reissued as a Penguin Modern Classic 25 years after its first publication. He tells me what's changed and what hasn't since he first published this groundbreaking exposé of fast food's effects on so many aspects of American society, why he was destined to suffer the fate of Upton Sinclair, how Keir Starmer fits in – and how he proudly built a chapter around six vital words.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen chapter 37, narrated by Isaac BirchallSubscribe on YT or Join the Book Club on Patreon and support me as an independent creator :Dhttps://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOFfvo05ElM96CmfsGsu3g/joinSummary:After doing her rounds to visit her daughter, Mrs. Jennings comes to Elanor with some gossip. She comes to say, that Mrs John Dashwood is ill, and has been seen by a doctor who happened to be seeing Charlotte's newborn just after being to the Dashwood's place. Mrs. Jenning's then goes on to explain that Anne let slip to Fanny that Edward and Lucy have been engaged for the past year. This threw Fanny into hysterics and she, only after her husband's pleading with her to let them pack their bags first, threw the Miss Steeles out of their house. Elanor is shocked by this account and while she manages to keep her cool before Mrs. Jennings, she feels deeply shocked by what has happened. She then goes to Marianne and tells her of all that has passed. Marianne is distraught by the news and cries all throughout Elanor's recounting of Mrs. Jenning's story and of her knowledge of the affair. Only after Elanor says truly how hurt she was by Lucy's announcement does Marianne believe that her sister truly cared about it. Marianne then laments about how hard it must have been for Elanor to deal with what happened to her and also with what happened to herself. Following this Elanor urges Marianne not to be angry with Edward for his actions, and she does, though very upset with him. The following day, their brother comes to visit and talk through everything that happened at their house too. He explains what happened once Mrs. Ferrars heard the news, and more importantly what happened once Edward arrived… Mrs. Ferrars, Fanny, and John all apparently demanded that Edward end the engagement immediately, and no matter how severe the punishment for keeping it, Edward refuses. John then explains that Mrs. Ferras has vowed to make sure that Edward shall never be able to find a decent job, that he shall only have his 2000 pounds to live off of, and that she will bestow the estate that Edward was to inherit, on his brother, Robert. Mrs. Jennings finds Edwards actions very noble and offers, if the occasion were to arise, to invite Edward to stay with her while he gets onto his feet. John doesn't wish to offend her, so he doesn't say anything, and though Marianne wishes to, she remembers her promise to her sister. SEO stuff I don't want to do. Jane Austin's timeless classic Sense and Sensibility follows the story of two girls, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, and their endeavors in love, marriage, and societal expectations. Love is not easy however, and Elinor finds her sense tested by her charming brother-in-law, while Marianne's sensibility brings her nothing but heartbreak
We discuss two books: George Orwell's Animal Farm and Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. What do these two books have in common? Which books are most like these books? What lessons should we learn from Animal Farm? Are The Lord of the Rings and A Tale of Two Cities more similar than they appear?

In this gentle and quietly unsettling conversation, Hiroko Yoda invites us into a world where spirituality doesn't begin with belief, but with attention. Drawing on her Japanese upbringing and her book Eight Million Ways to Happiness, Hiroko reflects on grief, ancestors, everyday ritual, and the idea of “half belief, half doubt” — a way of living that makes space for ambiguity rather than trying to resolve it. From small shrines in city parks to the simple act of taking a walk, she describes spirituality as a set of tools for pausing, noticing, and staying connected to the living world around us.Together, Tim and Hiroko explore what happens when faith becomes less about certainty and more about participation: how joy and play find their way into sacred spaces, why traditions can be blended and remixed without anxiety, and what it might mean to belong without needing to define what you believe. It's a conversation that gently challenges Western ideas of religion and invites listeners to experiment with a slower, softer, more attentive way of being in the world.Following the interview, Nomad hosts Tim and Anna reflect on the disorientation and gift of meeting a spirituality that doesn't play the same “belief game,” exploring simplicity, attention, and the idea of spiritual practices as tools rather than tests.Interview starts at 17m 53sBooks, quotes, links →The creation of Nomad's thoughtful, ad-free content is entirely funded by our equally thoughtful and wonderful listeners.
