Was liest eigentlich eine Bibliothekarin? It's our very first guest star episode! On this ep, Paul Ferrante - author of the "T.J. Jackson Mystery" paranormal YA series and dad/dad-in-law to our very own Carrie and Sean - stops by to talk ghosts. The ghosts of Gettysburg, PA, that is! The Battle of Gettysburg was not only the bloodiest battle of the entire American Civil War, but the bloodiest battle ever fought on U.S. soil. It seems the spirits of many of those lost between July 1st and 3rd, 1863 never left...and still haunt the streets, homes, and fields of Gettysburg to this day. From soldiers who have never left their posts, to haunted museums, inns, and restaurants, to one of the most paranormally active college campuses in the entire world, we take a tour through some of the most haunted places in Gettysburg with an author that used these legends as inspiration for his first novel, Last Ghost at Gettysburg. We ALSO get a glimpse into the spook-tastic childhood and upbringing that made Carrie so, uh, unique! You can find Paul Ferrante at paulferranteauthor.com, at Amazon, on Facebook, and in person at ParaConn with us July 24-25 in Ansonia, CT! ________________________________________ Connect with us on social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/aintitscary Twitter: @aintitscary Instagram: @aintitscary Patreon: www.patreon.com/aintitscary ___________________________________________ Thank you to our sponsors: BetterHelp - Special offer for Ain't it Scary? listeners: Get 10% off your first month at www.betterhelp.com/aintitscary Audible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-Day Free Trial at www.audibletrial.com/aintitscary BarkBox - Enjoy a FREE month of BarkBox on us when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month BarkBox subscription! Jill Richards is an Assistant Professor of English at Yale University. In this episode, she will talk us through her work “The Ferrante Letters”, written in 2020 alongside Sarah Chihaya, Merve Emre, and Katherine Hill. We will also understand how four women academics have forged their creative personas in an adventurous project born in the wake of the Ferrante Fever. In this episode, we will cover the following topics:(00:17) Intro by Costanza Barchiesi(01.45) Presentation of Costaza Barchiesi by Jane (04:00) Presentation of Jill Richard by Costanza Barchiesi(07:08) "Your book can be defined as the collection of a collaborative effort of four women who move in and out of a more strictly academic form of criticism. How would you define it in terms of genre and what does this do to the figure of the critic in general?"(12:50) "Has the reception of Ferrante changed over time? And how can we frame it in an Italian versus international way?"(17:23) "How did the book come about? In the introduction, you say that it started with “The Slow Burn” in journal Post45. https://post45.org/2015/06/the-slow-burn-an-introduction/ Why the title? Did you want to perhaps make Lenu’s (and Lila’s) anger your own in order to dig deeper into the books’ meaning?"(21:15) "What is the issue with judging a book by its cover with Ferrante?"(22:55) The Queer Counterfactual. "How did you get the main idea for the essay? Which critics inspired your idea? Do the chains of absent notebooks, absent dialect and absent Lila all add up to the translational quality of the novel itself? Does this translational quality, in turn, lend specificity to the queerness that you so well describe in your essay? Finally, do you think that the “queer counterfactual” could potentially be applied to any piece of literature or would you need a set of pre-requisites in order to apply this concept satisfactorily to a text?"(31:59) Role-playing: reading the titular scene. (37:56) Questions from the audience: how was it to write in a collaborative way?(41:54) The humanities and collaborative work.(43:55) Creative writing and research interests. Does creativity play a large part in research?(49:03) Silvia Federici and reproductive labour for valuing academic work in alternative ways.(53:32) Reading the book in translation and working on Ferrante as English scholars.Follow us on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/italian.minds/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/italian-minds/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/italianminds.podcast

Elections Series. Episode #1 of 4. On the morning of August 11, 1492, Rodrigo Borgia was elected Pope, taking the name Alexander VI and yelling “I am Pope! I am Pope!” The throngs of Romans in the Piazza di San Pietro shared in his excitement. But for some, the Papal Election of 1492 seemed to indicate the downfall of the papacy, if not the end of days. Giovanni de Medici is recorded as saying, “Now we are in the power of a wolf, the most rapacious, perhaps that this world has ever seen; and if we do not flee, he will infallibly devour us.” Gian Andrea Boccaccio wrote in a letter to the Duke of Ferrara, “ten Papacies would not suffice to satisfy the greed of all his kindred.” Ferrante, King of Naples, purportedly told his wife, “This election will not only undermine the peace of Italy, but that of the whole of Christendom.” The priest and prognosticator Girolamo Savonarola would spend the last year of his life trying to render the 1492 Papal election void due to simony, a campaign that resulted in his excommunication, torture, and execution. What was it about the Papal Election of 1492 and its resultant Pontiff, Alexander VI, that elicited such a dramatic range of reactions? As it turns out, this question is difficult to answer but it involves assassination, simony, nepotism, accusations of poison, coercion, abuse, incest, wildly debauched orgies, and political corruption. I’m trying to read books from all around the world, and I’ve found books from most areas. One area I’m having trouble with, though, is Eastern Europe. I don’t want to get bogged down reading books from a hundred or more years ago, and would prefer more modern works. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! -Erin 2. My nine year old daughter does not like to read most fiction or non-fiction books at all. The only thing she enjoys are graphic novels; she has also recently gotten into anime. Her favorites are Spirited Away (movie and graphic novels), and the Click series; she also enjoyed the first Sanity & Tallulah book. Any recs you have to keep this flame going would be appreciated! -Lee 3. Hey guys! Hope you’re both doing well and staying safe during these crazy times. I apologize in advance for being so, so cheesy, but I’m desperate, sorry. With the pandemic STILL going on, I haven’t been able to see my girlfriend in ages and honestly I just need some reads to remind me of her, even if it does make me miss her even more. I’m not very versed in romance, so I have no idea where to start. I’m looking for w/w romances that are very sweet, without much angst or conflict, but with some steaminess. I’d particularly like for the love interest to be a shy/sweet/cinnamon role type of character. -Celina 4. I realized that reading picture books to my four year old is the best part of my day every day now, and I’m leaning in to this. I’m maxing out my library checkouts and just using this time to read every book I ever wanted to to her. I’d like to recommend that everyone even non parents check out some picture books soon, as it’s often a satisfying mood changer for me. Please recommend lovely picture books for us listeners. -Brooke 5. Hi friends, As we continue to shelter-in-place my wanderlust is reaching peak levels… which is not aided by the end of a two-year relationship (with a fellow travel lover). I am feeling strongly about some sort of less-cliche version of an “Eat Pray Love” adventure to plan after quarantine as my 40th year approaches. I loved Nichol’s “No One Tells You This,” — would be interested in either a memoir or perhaps epic fiction with female protagonist. Epic, literary fiction set abroad that I’ve enjoyed include: Shantaram, A Fine Balance, House at the Edge of the Night, Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey Into Bhutan…. Countries of interest include Italy (art history major here! but please no Cusk or Ferrante) or really, anywhere. Appreciate y’all! -Christine 6. Do you have any recommendations of fantasy novels that have older (30s-40s) female protagonists? Something like Blackthorn and Grim series by Juliet Marillier. -RV 5. Hi, I recently discovered this podcast and have really enjoyed it. Thanks for the great work! Shoutout to your “How to Be Yourself” recommendation – I read it and thought it was so helpful. I recently finished A Little Life, and I am kind of at a loss for what to read next. I was especially moved by how well I felt the author followed the characters across their lives and the general theme of tracing prior events and their ramifications across time. Do you have recommendations of fiction or non-fiction books that similarly capture these themes? I’d prefer one where the “across time” is happening in more recent years (similar to A Little Life) rather than far back in history although open to anything Thanks! -EV Books Discussed Border by Kapka Kassabova The Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian, rec’d by Aram Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant by Tony Cliff Little Witch Academia by Yoh Yoshinari, Keisuke Sato, Trigger The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite Things Hoped For by Chencia C.
