Me Before You by Jojo Moyes is a deeply emotional and thought-provoking novel and movie adaptation that explores the complexities of love in friendship and relationship. This episode was recorded in February 2023, so please excuse the outdated pop culture references. This month (February 2023) Brindolyn and Karson fell in love with a couple of romance novels. Brindolyn read "Radha and Jai's Recipe for Romance" by Nisha Sharma, and Karson read "Me Before You" by Jojo Moyes. Trigger warning for "Me Before You": This book references suicide, self-harm and sexual assault. In our next episode, Karson will be reading "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin, and Brindolyn will be diving into "Site Alpha" by Neal Romriell. Sam Claflin is one of the sweetest people we have had on the show. During non-stop promotion for Daisy Jones and The Six and nomination announcements -- Claflin made time to talk to me about some of his most beloved roles (Me Before You, Adrift, Love Rosie) and what it took for him to become Billy Dunne in Prime Video's hit, Daisy Jones & The Six. Claflin has a massive smile as he answers questions openly and honestly. Whenever I compliment him, he humbly finds a way to gear that toward someone involved in the project. He values his work and loves that people want to see the work he has done. Claflin talks about reuniting with the cast, behind-the-scenes videos on social media, and his next project, and leaves a message for his fans. *This interview was done before the SAG/WGA strike. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Marianna Randazzo Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: In 1977, Daisy Jones & The Six were on top of the world; the band had risen from obscurity to fame, and then, after a sold-out show at Chicago's Soldier Field, they called it quits; now, decades later, the band members agree to reveal the truth. **Daisy Jones and The Six is available to stream in full on Prime Video. In aflevering 4 van Liefteratuur spreek ik met feelgoodauteur Iris Visser over tropes en clichés. Waarom vinden we zulke zogenoemde 'veelvoorkomende verhalenelementen' zo fijn in (feelgood)boeken? Zibby is joined by #1 New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You, Jojo Moyes, to discuss her latest novel Someone Else's Shoes, which tells the heartwarming and humorous story of two very different women and the gym bag mixup that brings them together and changes their lives. Jojo reveals the inspiration behind this novel and explains why she had to take some serious time off (3.5 years!) before writing it. After 10 years of overworking herself and reaching a breaking point, she finally learned how to take a step back and prioritize herself. The two also discuss Jojo's persistence (she wrote 8 books before having a bestseller!), her incredible talent for weaving humor and grief into her writing, the book that recently made her cry, and her best advice for writers.“A heartwarming, humorous and oh-so-human story.”—Zibby Owens for Good Morning AmericaPurchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3DPgnt0Subscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here.Purchase Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books merch here. I'm delighted to welcome back my good friend Jojo Moyes. Jojo was one of the very first people I interviewed for the pod back when it was just a random idea. Like all good friends do, she had my back! For that and many other things, I owe her.As I'm pretty sure you already know, Jojo is the global bestselling novelist of Me Before You, and 16 other novels. I think! She's sold 51million copies globally and several of her books have been turned into hit movies, including Me before you, for which she wrote the screenplay. Her latest, Someone Else's Shoes, will definitely be joining them. It's an action packed, emotionally astute, laugh out loud look at what happens when two very different women accidentally pick up each other's gym bags. It tells the good, the bad and the ugly about middle age, it's a love letter to female friendship and an ode to the totemic power of shoes.I met with Jojo for a very long overdue catch up. We talked the liberation of being in our 50s, growing into your looks in middle age and surviving the midlife maelstrom of divorce, kids leaving home, parental death, perimenopause and workaholism! She talked candidly about the mental health crisis that made her put the brakes on her career, and she wouldn't have got through it without her female friends. Oh, and guess what? She's a secret petrolhead! Who knew?!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Someone Else's Shoes by Jojo Moyes and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. This book and movie really moved me and made me evaluate how I made decisions in my life. Was I sacrificing my happiness? Or compromising? Am I settling? Or accepting? Well listen to Catherine and I talk and differentiate between the terms and discuss how this manifested in Lou as a character. Goodreads Summary: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars, discover the love story that captured over 20 million hearts in Me Before You, After You, and Still Me. They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . . Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. A Love Story for this generation and perfect for fans of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn't have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?
If you only listen to one of our episodes, let this be the one. Our recap of the 2016 movie Me Before You will sound a lot like an endorsement for therapy. One of us reveals to be probably missing a soul. But the other isn't so innocent either, because it's no coincidence that our rowdiest, most laugh-out-loud episodes tend to be recapping darker movies. Our dark humor keeps us sane, and it's lucky we found another human to share it with. Hope you enjoy!

Palsies with Palsys is finally taking shape after nearly 50 episodes! We are shifting focus towards disability and queerness in pop culture, and we are starting with the 2016 romantic drama film, "Me Before You," a controversial love story between an able bodied manic pixie dream girl and a moody, wealthy, disabled man. We really dig into this movie with our own reactions, Justin's personal experiences, as well as the initial backlash from the disabled community and advocates. This episode goes into A LOT of heavy issues and adult themes, so listener digression is advised.
Back in the before times, I had an idea to launch a podcast that celebrated the achievements and lives of women over 40. With a couple of friends and an idiot-proof microphone I recorded the first series of what was to become The Shift. This is a replay of one of the first episodes I ever recorded - with my friend Jojo Moyes. Little did we know that two and a half years later we would only have seen each other a handful of times and EVERYTHING would have changed irrevocably. It's a real blast from the past in so many ways. Here are the original show notes:How does it feel to suddenly become ultra-visible just as the world is trying to invisible you? That's what happened to this week's guest, mega-selling novelist Jojo Moyes, when the book her old publishers didn't want to publish - Me Before You - became a global bestseller and smash-hit movie in her mid-40s. Since then every book Jojo has written has been a bestseller and she's sold the movie rights to pretty much everything she's ever written. (Not remotely jealous.) Her latest, The Giver Of Stars, the transporting story of a group of women setting up a horseback library in the Appalachians is currently at the top of the bestseller lists and a movie is underway. But life wasn't always like that. Far from it. Jojo is funny and frank about the impact of stratospheric success on her professional and personal life. How it felt to be suddenly visible in her late forties. Health, fitness, freedom, a new found love of clothes and why she feels better than ever at 50. She also reveals how she finally overcame Imposter Syndrome, why she no longer suffers fools and how making new friends at 50 has been a revelation. Roses are RedViolets are Blue I want to throw a chair at you. This film sums up our life since starting the podcast...Will you be my flogentine? I thought not. Happy Valentines Day! Topics discussed during this lovey-dovey episode include: Is Danny Devito shorter than Fiona? Surely not. Who's the guy who voices Homer Simpson? Is Ben the Michael Douglas of the episode? Does Ben's chin resemble the one Kirk Douglas rocked for over 1000 years? Ben struggles to find any reason why Fiona would want to 'smash his face in?' Is Fiona ageing like a fine wine or turning into Kathleen Turner? Fiona displays her masterful storytelling skills. Can Ben finish any of his points? Ben can't understand why more people don't listen to the show. Fiona turns historian by expertly detailing The War Of The Roses. Who were The Tudors, and what has this Henry bloke got to do with it? Is Fiona Babe: A pig in the city? So 40 years of marriage gets you lumbered with the pet name Weasel face? Ben doubts the new segments live on air. Fiona questions Ben's romantic film recommendations. Any men out there fancy a weekend away in Nottingham or Wyoming? Ben's treat. Our final episode of the season! We'll be off for three weeks and then be back January 10 for Season 2.Things get quite steamy in this episode, as Aileen warms us up with Jennifer Weiner's, Big Summer. Then Lauren goes full romance with Robyn Carr's, Virgin River, and Alisa gives a saucy reading of one of the love scenes. Alisa then brings back a group favorite with Helen Fielding's, Bridget Jones's Diary. And Josie empties a box of tissues reading Jojo Moyes's, Me Before You.
Sandra Gibbons & Tera Palozola discuss the book series and television adaptation of Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and whether it's better to have loved and lost or never to have loved at all. They also share why it's important to not only find joy in the small things, but to live life to the fullest. Our first episode of the season where preparation was non-existent and we were just winging it. Thankfully, it led to a rollercoaster of a conversation, all focused around our outrage over the movie Me Before You.
Today our friend Justine joins us to finally talk about Me Before You, a film about a rich paraplegic who hires a lowly barista to keep him company during the last six months before his assisted suicide in Switzerland. We devote much of the episode to tearing the film apart, since despite an engaging romance and attractive leads, it argues that life isn't worth living if you can't be an extreme sports douche. Also we discuss waterlogged powerchair joysticks, salty tequila shots, movie theatre choking hazards, and sexy food diaries. TRANSCRIPT HERE Welcome to Ep 9 and a new naming convention!! Today we cover 2016's Me Before You. In this episode, Michael takes the lead and goes ahead and writes a whole motherfucking university essay on the subject of disability and voluntary assisted dying. He goes on quite a journey of understanding as to why this movie, directed by Thea Sharrock and based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, is a pile of steaming offensive ableist trash. “On the nose” doesn't cover a sliver of it. Please note that we speak as able bodied people and let us know if we able-splain at any point! Also, Myffy is our cat. CONTENT WARNING: Voluntary assisted dying, euthanasia, ableism, traffic injury, suicide, depiction of disability as tragedy, sex, horse racing. Ok, so it's that time of year and Sarah is on deadline, which means we're just kicking our next read along episode down the road until she's done (which she swears will be very soon). So, this week, we've got a freewheeling episode that we've been thinking about for a while — let's talk about what makes a romance novel a romance novel (hint, it's not when the heroine is run over by a train). Whether you're new to Fated Mates this month or have been with us for all three seasons, we adore you, and we're so grateful to have you. We hope you're reading the best books this week. Our next read along is Mary Balogh's A Matter of Class, a short historical novel. Get it for only $2.99 at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or Google Books.Show NotesWe keep putting Mary Balogh in the corner, but swear to God, our next read-along will be A Matter of Class. Also, we've been pronouncing her name wrong -- it's "Bah-log" not "Bay-lo" We'll get it right on the read along we promise.A couple of weeks ago, Jen asked about what articles romance readers share with people new to genre, and the results were interesting. The Bridgerton effect: Regé-Jean Page on SNL, the Bridgerton musical on TikTok, and the brilliant Patricia A. Matthew in the Los Angeles Review of Books. The Happily Ever After (HEA), or the Happy For Now (HFN), is a requirement if you want to categorize it as romance.Nicholas Sparks doesn't write romance (per the previous item), but this kiss between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling was great on film and great on the MTV Movie Awards. Me Before You has horrible disability rep and shouldn't ever appear on anyone's list of Best Romances. Oubliette is a great word. Surprising no one, Sarah likes it because of Labyrinth, obviously. In WandaVivsion, Vision (played by Paul Bettany) asks Wanda, “What is grief if not love persevering?” And it struck a chord with a lot of people. If you're interested in the book about the speed skater and the figure skater, it's Fire on the Ice by Tamsen Parker. It's HOT. In the New York Times, Matthew B. Roberts, a showrunner for Outlander said that one of the difficulties of adapting romance is that "You can't film a thought."Deus ex Machina never works in a romance novel. I said what I said. Speed is a romance and Jeff Daniels does great eye work. Miss Scarlet and the Duke is a TV show that follows a lot of romance conventions, and Sarah says the sexual tension is terrific. Also, this beard.Jen used Working Girl as an example of a movie where the woman's journey is more important than the romantic arc. Yes, she's dating herself, but whatever, it's an age-appropriate pop culture reference for her!

Take a sweet T moment and meet my friend and fellow Enneagram 7, Tiffini Butler. She is an everyday amazing jr. high science/journalism teacher, avid traveler, librarian level reader, and an adopted child. While crashing on her best friend Hailey's couch we talked about all of these topics, of what makes Tiffini totally unique.
