Listener Karen from Illinois wrote in asking what a plenary indulgence is, and Patrick did not disappoint. So, what is an indulgence anyway? Patrick breaks it down like this: Sin is forgiven in confession, but its effects still linger (like spiritual scars). Jesus paid the penalty for sin once and for all, but we still need to heal the damage done (to us, others, and the world). Imagine sin is like breaking a window. Confession = forgiveness. But... someone still has to fix the window. The indulgence. The Church, using the authority Jesus gave her ("whatever you bind on Earth..."), can apply the spiritual riches of Jesus and the saints to help wipe away the lingering effects of sin. This is what indulgences are all about. Partial Indulgence = Some of that damage is repaired. Plenary Indulgence = All the effects of sin are wiped clean. How to learn more? Patrick recommends: The Handbook of Indulgences: Norms and Grants Why does this even matter? Because... nothing unclean can enter Heaven (Revelation 21:27). Indulgences help clean you up now, so you don’t have to get purified later in Purgatory. Patrick says it's totally doable to gain a plenary indulgence every single day (!!!) if you meet the conditions (like Confession, Mass, prayer for the Pope, detachment from sin, etc.).

Do We Misunderstand the Virtue of Hope? (Special Podcast Highlight)

The Patrick Madrid Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2025 10:38

Okay, so on this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, we get a look into the virtue of hope. A caller named Matt from Columbus, NJ, kicks things off by saying that a lot of Catholics don’t really get what hope actually is. Honestly, he’s onto something. What’s Hope, Really? Most people think of hope like: I hope the weather’s nice tomorrow, or I hope my team wins. But biblical, theological hope is different. The Catechism (CCC 1817) lays it out: Hope is the virtue by which we desire heaven, trusting not in ourselves, but in God’s promises and His grace to get us there. Basically, it’s not a shaky, fingers-crossed kind of thing; it’s a confident expectation in God’s faithfulness. So… Can Catholics Be Sure They’re Going to Heaven? Matt brings up a great point here. He adds that if you ask a Catholic, “Are you going to heaven?” they’ll respond with, “Uh… I hope so?”, but with a tone of doubt. That’s a problem. Because hope isn’t uncertainty; it’s trust. Patrick brings in St. Paul as Exhibit A. Paul talks about winning the race and fighting the good fight; he expects heaven, but he also knows he has to persevere to the end. We don’t “earn” salvation (we need grace!), but we cooperate with it. So, the Catholic answer isn’t “I know I’m going to heaven, no doubt” (we’re not into that Once Saved, Always Saved mindset), but it’s also not “I have no idea”. Instead, it’s: -I trust in God’s promises -I know He’ll give me the grace to get there -But I also know I have free will and need to stay faithful Hope vs. Despair & Presumption Patrick also covers the two big dangers that wreck hope: Despair: Thinking, I’m too far gone, I’ll never be saved. That’s a lie; God’s mercy is bigger than any sin. Never stop hoping! Presumption: Thinking, I don’t need to do anything, I’m automatically saved. This is also wrong; Jesus literally tells us to persevere to the end (Matt 24:13). Hope Is Non-Negotiable. Patrick ties it all together with St. Thomas Aquinas, who says hope is necessary for salvation. You have to desire heaven and expect God’s help. No hope? No heaven. Moral of the story: Hope is trust in God’s love and promises. So next time someone asks if you’re going to heaven, don’t say “I don’t know” ... say, “I trust in God to get me there.” Want to level up your hope? Pray for the grace of perseverance, dive into Scripture, and never stop trusting in God’s goodness!

This is a great sermon during this Advent season about angels called "The Ministry of Angels". The pastor began by saying how many times angels are sung about in our traditional Christmas Carols. If you stop to think about it, they really are mentioned a lot. Angelology is a fascinating study, and there is much in the Bible about angels. But like most doctrines, it can and often is twisted by the unstable. It is a target for fringe theologians who spout fanciful theories and supposed visions. As Phil Johnson has said, "Few biblical topics have provoked more wild speculation and fruitless debate than the topic of angels." Because of this I am providing what I have found to be safe and solid material on angels for further study. After listening to the sermon I linked above, there are other great resources that explore the facts about these incredible beings. John MacArthur has several pieces about the different ministries of angels, including angel armies, (Angels: God's Invisible Army, Part 1 with other parts after this), entertaining angels (Ever Met an Angel?), Angelic Messengers, and others. Search for angels at gty.org. Phil Johnson wrote an essay at Ligonier called Angels: Messengers and Ministers of God. Martyn Lloyd-Jones preached two sermons on angels in his Great Doctrines series. One is called Good Angels. Sadly, there is no recording of his subsequent lecture titled "The Devil and the Fallen Angels" but there is a transcript you can read which I uploaded for the public. Here is the link to the transcribed sermon The Devil and the Fallen Angels by Lloyd-Jones. Randy Alcorn, author of the book 'Heaven', has several articles about angels at his website. How Do We Know That Seraphim and Cherubim Are Angels? Alcorn also answered this question In Their Own Realm, Do Angels Have Physicality? Spurgeon's Angelology: A Speculative Thought. In this sermon, Charles Spurgeon discusses the angels who ministered to Jesus after His temptation in the wilderness. Satan departing, angels ministering RC Sproul preached a two-part series simply called Angels. Now here's a little debate for you: do angels sing? I wrote about this a few years ago. Despite the hymns and carols noting that angels sing this or that, there is very little scriptural evidence that they do sing. But no scriptural evidence claiming they unequivocally do not sing. Hmmm. GotQuestions: Do Angels Sing? The End Time: Do Angels Sing? In which I look at the stances of some theologians who believe they do or do not, as well as offer some food for thought. In the end, lest we fall guilty of what Phil Johnson said above, that we engage in wild speculation or fruitless debate, let me end here with a link to a page listing scriptures in which angels are mentioned, and it says there are 499 scriptures (but 25 are noted here).

"Will I Feel Regret in Heaven?" (Special Podcast Highlight)

The Patrick Madrid Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2024 7:58

Patrick Madrid tackled a fascinating question on his show: Can we feel regret in heaven?    Regret in Heaven? Not Happening.   Patrick made it crystal clear: heaven is an eternal state of perfect bliss. No regrets, no "what-ifs," no "I should have prayed more Rosaries." You're maxed out in joy, peace, and love, depending on your “capacity” to receive God's glory.   He used a great analogy: Imagine your capacity for heavenly joy is like a container:   Some have an Olympic swimming pool worth of grace.   Others might have a Dixie cup (ouch, but still blissed out!).   The Blessed Virgin Mary? Her capacity is like the Pacific Ocean.    No one will feel bad for having “less,” because they'll be maxed out with what they can hold. It's like everyone's favorite drink, perfectly full: no room for envy or FOMO.    Purgatory: Where Regret Gets Burned Off   Now, regret? That's for purgatory. Patrick referenced 1 Corinthians 3:15, explaining that in purgatory, we'll confront the moments we chose “wood, hay, and straw” over “gold, silver, and precious stones.” (Translation: the times we didn't fully cooperate with God's grace.)   In purgatory, we'll think: “Man, I could've done more!” But it's all part of God's mercy: purifying us for heaven.   Emotions in Heaven? Absolutely.   Patrick also clarified that while we won't feel regret or negative emotions in heaven, we will feel joy, love, and awe at levels we can't even imagine. The emotional reunions with loved ones?  Epic. And all those pesky, earthly “low emotions” like anger, jealousy, or boredom? Gone forever.    The Leap to Heaven: Bigger Than Birth   Patrick shared this: Just as an unborn baby can't imagine the world outside the womb (oceans, love, burgers), we can't fathom the leap from this life to eternal life. It's that much bigger and more incredible.   St. Paul nailed it: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, what God has prepared for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9)

This conversation sheds light on the profound and permanent nature of being a priest.   Ken (email) – Your opinion on people's salvation is inconsistent (00:38) Karen (email) – Responds to Ken's email and writes “You told that woman her husband is in hell…” (Patrick did not say that) (19:46) Margie - Some priests don't where their clerics and it makes me upset (24:27) Michael - What does it mean if a priest is defrocked? What do you think about the book 'Heaven in our Hands' where it says that the Sermon on the Mount might not have been Christ's actual words. What do you think. (34:54) Mark - How much should we be telling children about heaven and hell and other heavy topics of our faith? (45:08) Kevin - Why can I bless my children, but not other people? (47:18)

The message was delivered on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION: This service explores the theme of unity in diversity and the role of religion in fostering love and healing in the world. Using the story of the Tower of Babel, Marlin illustrates how the focus of religion should be on creating a heaven-like experience on Earth. Instead of worrying about the afterlife, we are called to address the real "hells" of this world—poverty, injustice, and suffering—by being agents of love, compassion, and unity. The service emphasizes the need for religious communities to grow in soulfulness, love, and generosity, not just in their faith, but in their actions toward others. Alright, so Patrick Madrid had an amazing convo with Dana, an atheist who called in with a pretty heavy question:   Dana's Big Question: "Can people come up with their own moral values without God?" He's like, “Look, I don't believe in God, so I think humans create their own morals. Isn't this whole ‘God is moral' thing just a ‘God of the gaps' argument? Like, we're uncomfortable with the moral mystery, so we make up a God to fill in the blank.”   Patrick's Response: He said that atheists can be good people. No one's saying atheists are running wild in the streets. But here's the thing: why should anyone bother being good without God? What's the deeper point?”   Basically, he said that while atheists can be decent, honest folks, they're still borrowing from a moral system rooted in something bigger, whether they admit it or not. Without God, morality becomes more like, “I like this, I don't like that,” and not something with actual weight behind it.   Dana's Take: Dana admits that atheists have a bit of a moral problem: if there's no God, it's all kind of subjective, right? It's just humans deciding what's good or bad. He also mentioned he hopes there's an afterlife, but he's not exactly banking on it.   Patrick's Counter: Patrick dropped a bombshell: without God, the world is basically one big animal kingdom. It's just "survival of the fittest". There's no real "good" or "evil", just whatever works for you. He threw in this tough question: “If we're just a bunch of neurons firing off in our brains, why should I care about what's fizzing in your brain? Or mine, for that matter?”    The Catholic Curveball: Patrick wasn't done. He said we all know deep down that stuff like truth, love, and justice are real, not just random feelings. And since those things can't be physically measured, that's a clue there's something bigger than just nature, a.k.a. God. Then he added: God's grace is open to everyone, no matter how late in life they figure it out.   The Anne Frank Challenge: Dana brought up a tough one: how is it that a man like Rudolf Höss (a Nazi) could repent at the last minute and go to heaven, but someone like Anne Frank, who didn't believe in Jesus, might not since she was Jewish? Patrick didn't flinch. He explained that God's mercy is bigger than the worst sins. If you genuinely repent, even at the 11th hour, you can go to heaven. That's the beauty of Christianity. If you knowingly reject God, yeah, that's a different story.   Wrapping it Up: Patrick ended on a hopeful note, basically telling Dana, “Hey man, I'm praying for you. And who knows? Maybe one day you'll embrace Catholicism."

Do Miscarried Babies Go to Heaven? (Special Podcast Highlight)

Patrick Madrid had such a touching moment on his show when a sweet little girl named Emily from Texas called in with a really deep question. She asked, "Do babies who die in their mommy's tummy go to purgatory because of original sin?" You could just hear the innocence and sincerity in her voice, and Patrick's response was so kind and thoughtful.   He gently explained that no, those babies don't go to purgatory. Purgatory is a place where souls go to be purified from sins they've committed during their lives, but unborn babies haven't had a chance to commit any sins at all. So, it wouldn't make sense for them to be there.   Patrick then broke down the idea of original sin in a way Emily could understand. He used this really simple analogy: imagine your parents were billionaires (how fun would that be?!) and you were supposed to inherit all that money. But then, because of something your parents did, they lost it all, and even though it wasn't your fault, you miss out on the inheritance. That's kind of what original sin is like—it's something we inherit from Adam and Eve, but it's not because of anything we personally did.   What about those babies who don't get a chance to be baptized? That's where the Church trusts in God's mercy. Patrick explained that while the Church doesn't have an exact answer, it hopes and prays that God, in His love, gives those babies the grace they need to enter heaven. And he reminded Emily that God loves those babies even more than their parents or siblings ever could, so we trust that they're safe with Him.   Patrick's ability to take such a big, complicated question and make it so clear and comforting was really beautiful.   Bottom line: We don't know exactly what happens to miscarried babies, but we have every reason to hope that God, in His infinite love and mercy, welcomes them into heaven. And we can trust that one day, their families will be reunited with them in God's embrace.   If you've suffered a miscarriage, the pain is real, and Relevant Radio is always here to pray with you and support you through the journey of grief. You are not alone.

What Does the Church Say About Near-Death Experiences? (Special Podcast Highlight)

So, Patrick dives into a question from Bonnie, who's curious about those intriguing near-death experiences where people claim they've seen heaven or even Jesus himself.  The big question she asks: What does the Catholic Church think about these experiences?   Patrick starts by acknowledging that, throughout history, there have been countless reports of near-death experiences (NDEs). People often describe floating above their bodies, seeing a bright light, or even meeting Jesus. While these stories are fascinating, Patrick reminds us that the Church approaches them with cautious curiosity.   He breaks down the possibilities into three "buckets":   Imagination at Work: Patrick notes that our brains are powerful and can create vivid experiences, especially when we're unconscious or close to death. Some NDEs might just be a result of our minds going into overdrive.   Body-Soul Separation: The Church teaches that death occurs when the soul leaves the body. Patrick speculates that some NDEs might be a glimpse of the soul lingering just before fully detaching from the body. This could explain those heightened senses or out-of-body perspectives some people report.   Genuine Afterlife Encounters: Then, there's the possibility that some people really do get a sneak peek into the afterlife. Patrick mentions biblical examples like Lazarus, who was truly dead before Jesus brought him back to life. However, he also warns that not all these experiences are heavenly. St. Teresa of Avila, for example, had a terrifying vision of sliding down a slimy tunnel toward hell—a wake-up call for her to change her life.   Finally, Patrick adds a word of caution: If someone's NDE contradicts Church teachings or the Bible—like claiming everyone goes to heaven, regardless of faith—that could be a red flag that the experience might be more demonic than divine.    In the end, while some NDEs might be genuine, many could just be products of imagination or even spiritual deception. The key litmus test? Always check if these experiences align with what Jesus and the Church teach. If not, it's probably best to approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism.

"Do You Believe in Heaven on Earth?": A Response to Jehovah's Witnesses

On a recent episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, a listener named Joseph from Anaheim called in with a situation many of us have faced. Some Jehovah's Witnesses came to his door and asked if he believed in heaven on earth. Joseph, being Catholic, said no. But then they brought up the Lord's Prayer— “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”—and it left him wondering if he had missed something.   Patrick jumped in to help clear things up. He explained that while Revelation 21 talks about a new heaven and a new earth, it doesn't mean that heaven will literally be on earth. Instead, it's about a future where the spiritual and physical worlds come together in a perfect way—a beautiful thought, but different from what the Jehovah's Witnesses were getting at.   Here's the thing: Jehovah's Witnesses believe that only 144,000 people will actually make it to heaven, and everyone else will live on a paradise earth. Patrick pointed out that this idea might sound nice at first, but when you really think about it—spending eternity picking fruit and petting animals—it starts to feel a little... boring.   He then compared that with the Catholic belief, where everyone who's saved gets to experience the fullness of God's love and joy in heaven—something way beyond anything we can imagine here on earth. Sounds better, right?   Next time a Jehovah's Witness might come to your door, you can tell them about the beauty of the Catholic faith and our understanding of heaven.    Don't be thrown off by tricky questions. Have confidence in the faith, and don't be afraid to have these conversations—armed with a little knowledge, they're easier than they seem.

Lee from Wisconsin asks a question that tugs at the heartstrings: "Does God still love the souls in hell?" You have to hear Patrick Madrid's response!   Key Takeaways:   God's Everlasting Love:   Unchanging Love: Patrick reassures us that God's love never ceases, even for those in hell. He holds them in existence, which is a profound sign of His undying love.   Created for Love: Imagine this: God knew you, and each one of us, from all eternity. He created us out of love, fully aware of our destinies, yet He chose to bring us into existence.     God's Timeless Perspective:   Beyond Time: God doesn't see time like we do. For Him, everything is an eternal "now." This eternal perspective means His love and knowledge are always present and constant.     Balancing Justice and Mercy:   Justice in Love: While God's justice means punishment for disobedience, it doesn't negate His love. Holding even the damned in existence is an act of His love.   Fixed Decisions: Once a soul is in hell, their decision is irrevocable. They cannot repent because they lack the supernatural virtue of charity needed to love God.   The Moment of Judgment:   Final Chance: Forgiveness is available up to the point of death. After death, the opportunity for repentance ends. As Hebrews 9:27 says, "It is appointed for man to die once, and then the judgment."   Act of Contrition: A sincere act of contrition at the moment of death can restore one to grace. This should remind us of the importance of being always ready through daily acts of contrition.   Heartfelt Advice:   Daily Contrition: Patrick gently urges us to make a habit of daily contrition. Picture this: before you drive, before you sleep, whisper a heartfelt, "Lord, I love You. I'm sorry for my sins. Please forgive me." This simple habit keeps us ready to meet God, no matter what happens.   Conclusion: Patrick Madrid's words remind us that God's love is a constant, unyielding force, even for those who turn away from Him. His perfect balance of justice and mercy calls us to live in a state of readiness and love.   Your Daily Devotion: "Lord, I love You with all my heart. I'm sorry for my sins. Please forgive me. I am more sorry because I love You and know You love me than I am about fear of punishment."

How often do you think about heaven? How do you picture it? Does it fill you with immense peace?   John Morales has a heavenly discussion with Fr. Jerome Koutnik, exploring the nature of heaven. Spoiler alert: it's not the soda-fountain-in-the-clouds you might have imagined as a kid!    A Spiritual Dimension Fr. Jerome helps us understand that heaven isn't a physical location. Instead, it's a transcendent reality. St. Paul hints at this in 1 Corinthians 2:9, describing heaven as something beyond our wildest dreams.   Jesus' Ascension: A Physical Event with a Spiritual Meaning When Jesus ascended, it wasn't about reaching a physical "place" but symbolizing a higher, glorified existence. He rose to confirm the apostles' faith, showing that His presence isn't confined to physical realms.   Heavenly Presence: Beyond Time and Space Fr. Jerome emphasizes that while heaven isn't a physical place, Jesus' risen body and the bodies of Mary and St. Joseph are present there in a glorified form. They move beyond physical constraints, embodying a spiritual reality that transcends our earthly understanding.   Mass: A Glimpse of Heaven on Earth Fr. Jerome beautifully connects this concept to the Mass. It's not just a local gathering; it's a mystical participation in the eternal, heavenly liturgy. Through the Eucharist, heaven and earth unite, making every Mass a step into the divine.   Heaven: In the Heart of Christ For those still wondering, “Where is heaven?” Fr. Jerome poetically concludes: heaven is in the heart of Christ. It's a place of eternal love and mercy, where we're invited to dwell forever.    Are you living for heaven now on Earth?    Key Takeaways:   Heaven isn't a physical place: It's a transcendent reality.   Jesus' ascension: Symbolic of moving to a glorified existence.   Presence in heaven: Not bound by physical limitations.   Mass: A mystical participation in the heavenly liturgy.

We're back this week to discuss a band that experienced highs, lows, and tragedy throughout their career as we pick The Best & Worst of Warrant. Warrant, formed in Hollywood in 1984, would go through changes in their early years that would lead to recruiting then-Plain Jane members Jani Lane and Steven Sweet into the band. A false start under Prince, a soundtrack appearance, and touring would result in the band getting signed to Columbia Records. 1989's 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich' would spawn several hit singles including 'Down Boys,' 'Big Talk,' and 'Heaven' with the latter hitting #2 on Billboard. The doors would blow wide open with the release of 1990's 'Cherry Pie,' a song that was a blessing and a curse to the band. Controversy would also follow the band on their first two albums with British guitarist Mike Slamer being rumored to handle all guitar parts in the studio. 1992 would see musical tides shifting amid the release of 'Dog Eat Dog,' a tougher album produced by Michael Wagener. Things would stranger and more experimental with the band's 1995 and 1996 releases, 'Ultraphobic' and 'Belly to Belly' respectively. The band would flame out and briefly reunite before shifting singers twice more. Lead singer Jani Lane would tragically pass away to alcohol poisoning in 2011. We cover the Jani Lane lane era of Warrant this week and discuss those albums as well as the new tracks on Greatest & Latest (1999) and Under the Influence (2001) while picking what we deem to be the best and worst track off each.
