    Sistem saraf pada mamalia, secara general memiliki tingkat perkembangan yang lebih tinggi dari kelas lain. Serebrum berukuran lebih besar jika dibandingkan keseluruhan bagian otak. Serebellum juga berukuran lebih besar dan berlobus lateral 2 buah. Lobus optikus ada 4 buah, setiap bagian lateralnya dibagi oleh alur transversal menjadi lobus anterior dan posterior. Otak (Encephalon) terdiri dari beberapa bagian yang hampir sama dengan vertebrata yang lain, seperti prosencephalon, lobus opticus, cerebellum dan medulla oblongata.

    Pada sumsum tulang belakang burung, pembesaran di daerah serviks disebabkan banyaknya akson yang dibutuhkan untuk mengontrol otot sayap. Pembesaran lumbal terjadi karena banyaknya akson yang mengontrol kaki. Bagian toraks agak tipis karena gerakan sayap dan anggota badan tidak perlu terkoordinasi (jadi lebih sedikit interneuron yang dibutuhkan).

The direct conversion of mesenchymal tissue into bone is called intramembranous ossification. This process occurs primarily in the bones of the skull. In other cases, the mesenchymal cells differentiate into cartilage, and this cartilage is later replaced by bone. The process by which a cartilage intermediate is formed and replaced by bone cells is called endochondral ossification.
