After three successful seasons overseas, Kyle Hines still was holding out hope that the call to the NBA would come. A productive, but undersized center at 6-foot-6, the Sicklerville, New Jersey native and Timber Creek High School graduate made the decision that probably has resulted in him being among the best EuroLeague players in the last 10 years. Hines relinquished the grip the NBA held on him and decided to be the best player in the EuroLeague he could be. That meant worrying less about offensive numbers and more about his defense and filling whatever role the team needed. It was a typical postseason spring workout for Ashley Howard. Howard had just come off a successful sophomore season at Drexel, where he averaged 8.9 points and 4.9 steals. He was excited to get the opportunity to play under Bruiser Flint, who had been named the Drexel coach following the 2000-01 season. He was at the peak of his basketball prowess, a young man ready to make his mark on a program. But he didn’t feel right during that workout. The answer he got after telling Dragons trainers and being evaluated ended up being one of the worst moments of his life – but also one of the most important. It was discovered that Howard had a heart condition, and his basketball career, so suddenly, was over. “It was the most difficult part of my life when you talk about being 20 years old, the time I invested in basketball from I can’t even remember up until that point and then to not be able to play again, it was hard.” La Salle University men’s basketball coach Ashley Howard joins Bracy Sports Media to talk about his rise to a Division I head coaching job after assistant coaching stints at La Salle, Drexel, Xavier and Villanova. – Aaron Bracy has been a fixture covering Philadelphia sports for more than two decades. Outside of players and coaches, no one has done more for women’s basketball than Greenberg. Actually, there probably aren’t many players or coaches who can say they’ve done more for the game than him. Hall of Fame women’s basketball writer Mel Greenberg joins Bracy Sports Media. Known as The Guru of women’s basketball, Greenberg created the first Top 25 women’s college basketball poll in 1976 while working at the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is a 2007 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. – Aaron Bracy has been a fixture covering Philadelphia sports for more than two decades.
