Chris and Mike are back with a wide-ranging sports conversation that starts on football's biggest stage and ends with draft boards, NBA speculation and the future of sports broadcasting. They open with a look back at the Super Bowl, focusing on what makes a championship defense truly dominant. From relentless pressure up front to disciplined coverage on the back end, they break down how elite defenses still win titles in an era built around quarterbacks and high-scoring offenses. The discussion naturally turns to the evolution of the position and what it takes for young quarterbacks to thrive in today's NFL. Baker Mayfield becomes part of that conversation — not just as a player, but as a symbol of how quickly narratives can change in this league. From there, the spotlight shifts to the AFC and how competitive the conference has become. The Patriots are no longer the automatic measuring stick they once were, and roster turnover has changed the balance of power. Chris and Mike talk about what that means for teams trying to rise into contention and how quickly windows can open and close. They zero in on the Browns, examining their defensive needs and the importance of hitting on impact players in the draft. For a franchise trying to build sustained success, nailing those defensive selections could be the difference between playoff hope and legitimate contention. The NFL talk blends into a broader conversation about team-building philosophy. How much should you invest in defense versus offense? Can a dominant unit still carry a team in January? And what kind of prospect truly shifts a franchise's trajectory? Chris and Mike break it down with a practical lens, especially when it comes to Cleveland's long-term outlook. Then the energy pivots to the NBA. James Harden's impact on the Cavs becomes a hot topic — what his presence would mean stylistically, how it would change spacing and playmaking, and whether the move would represent a short-term push or a long-term gamble. They also revisit the ever-present question in Northeast Ohio sports: Could LeBron ever return to Cleveland? It's more than nostalgia. They discuss fit, timing, roster construction and what it would signal for the franchise if that door ever reopened. The Lakers enter the discussion as well, with a look at roster changes and how the Western Conference arms race continues to evolve. What works in today's NBA? Star power? Depth? Flexibility? The Cavs' situation is weighed against those broader league trends, creating a layered conversation about risk, chemistry and championship windows. The Olympics come up as well, particularly the broadcasting challenges in a fragmented media world. With streaming services reshaping how audiences consume sports, what does the future of major global events look like? They reflect on how viewing habits have shifted and how networks are adapting — or struggling to adapt — to a digital-first audience. If you enjoy thoughtful sports conversations that connect football, basketball, baseball and media trends, this episode is for you. Jump into the comments and let us know:– What's the Browns' biggest defensive need?– Would you want to see LeBron back in Cleveland?– Is James Harden the right fit for the Cavs?– And how do you watch the Olympics now compared to a decade ago? Thanks for watching and listening. Episode 585 of the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch features Neil Best, who worked for Newsday for many decades covering sports media, the NFL and other topics. He retired from journalism in December. In this podcast, Best discusses what covering sports media was like for him over the last two decades; how he approached the job as a writer whose market was the No. 1 media market in the U.S.; the endless power of the NFL; why sports-talk radio was such an important topic for him; his time covering the Giants for time; working for the Anchorage (Alaska) Times; whether the streamers will ultimately get all the NFL content; why Newsday was one of the only places that staffed a full-time sports media columnist at a major newspaper; the future of this subject matter as far as a beat, and more. The American media landscape is no longer about excellence, it's about ideological capture. In this episode, Ben Domenech dissects the radical transformation of our institutions, from the shuttering of The Washington Post sports desk to the decline of late-night comedy into humorless activism. Ben is joined by Fox News Congressional Correspondent Bill Melugin to pull back the curtain on the internal strife within the Department of Homeland Security and the fallout from the Alex Pretti shooting. Then, Winston Marshall joins the program to discuss the "soft imperialism" of the CCP and why Greenland has become the strategic frontline in the face of Chinese global ambitions. My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ In today's episode, we're speaking to Suryansh Tibarewala, the co-founder of Essentially Sports. EssentiallySports began in 2014 as a bootstrapped passion project started by Suryansh and his co-founders while they were college students in India. It started as a simple WordPress site focused on tennis and Formula One. The site ran for four to five years with virtually no revenue, relying largely on volunteer contributors. But then in 2018, the site's founders decided to quit their day jobs and go all in. They expanded the sports coverage, found reliable advertising partners, and eventually grew EssentiallySports into one of the largest sports sites ranked by Comscore – all without raising outside capital. In a recent interview, Suryansh walked through the site's early days, its expansion into US sports, and its B2B live events strategy.

Veteran sports journalist and author Harvey Araton joins me on the show for a deep conversation on how sports media has changed, what true "access" used to look like in the print era, and why great storytelling still matters in today's sports culture. Harvey shares behind-the-scenes stories from a career covering elite athletics (including the NBA), plus his experience co-producing ESPN's 30 for 30: When the Garden Was Eden, a project tied to the legendary 1970s New York Knicks era. A major focus of this episode is Harvey's newest project and his first-ever middle-grade children's novel, ** The Goal of the Game **, inspired by what youth sports has become in today's high-pressure, high-cost environment. If you're a parent, coach, athlete, journalist, or someone who loves sports stories with real meaning, this one will hit. In this episode, we cover: What sports journalism used to be like and how access has changed Print media vs. today's creator-driven sports media world How When the Garden Was Eden became an ESPN 30 for 30 The pressure kids face in modern youth sports and how early it starts The youth sports industry, travel teams, and the "future stakes" mindset Why Harvey wrote The Goal of the Game and what he hopes kids learn A powerful life lesson: don't enter a story with a preconceived conclusion, listen first Harvey Araton's book: The Goal of the Game Amazon: https://a.co/d/4VkH2XF Barnes & Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-goal-of-the-game-harvey-araton/1148082088 Website: http://www.HarveyAraton.com If you enjoyed the episode, subscribe/follow so you don't miss weekly interviews with sports figures from around the world.
