We continue our journey through pheasant country (with a few detours along the way), as I debrief North Dakota's wild bird experts from their Dept. of Game & Fish. Joining me are Jesse Kolar, upland game bird supervisor, and his right hand, RJ Gross. Their perspective as biologists, coupled with their extensive hunting experience, will be of service no matter where you hunt. We talk good starting points for ringnecks, Huns and sharptails, plus habitat quirks and go-to spots. They'll offer insights into the birds' habits, population dynamics, and biology, offer hunting and scouting tips, and bring us up to speed on their walk-in program. RJ points out some lesser-known public access ground, and Jesse tells us how they conduct their bird counts. "Fix It" has another use for your checkcord, and our social segment is loaded (pun intended) with shooting tips from viewers and listeners. And it's all brought to you by: Mid Valley Clays and Shooting School, CableGangz, TrulockChokes, ClayCopter, USA Clay Target League, Purina Pro Plan Sport and FindBirdHuntingSpots.com.
Send Rachel a text message.Feeling burned out by healing, self-improvement, or spiritual growth? You may be trying too hard.In this episode of Self Talk, Rachel Astarte explores inner work burnout and the exhaustion that can arise when personal growth becomes another project to manage, master, or perfect. Sometimes the underdeveloped ego that once resisted our growth simply turns healing into another form of striving.Rachel offers a gentler path through the Foundation of Self, exploring why lasting transformation is ultimately experiential rather than intellectual and how awareness, nonjudgment, and gentleness can help us release unnecessary effort. Drawing on the self-inquiry of Sri Ramana Maharshi, listeners are invited to ask, “Who is having this thought?” and shift attention from the mind's activity to Awareness itself. This episode also introduces Rachel's “Magic Therapy Question”—How do I want to feel in this situation?—as a practical tool for recognizing misalignment and reconnecting with the wisdom of the Highest Self.If your inner work feels overwhelming, exhausting, or heavy, this conversation offers a simple reminder: You do not have to earn what you already are. Rest, listen inward, and remember that you are a unique expression of Pure Consciousness—an eternal Self living a fully human life.Listen to discover how to stop striving to become awakened and begin living awake.EPISODE TIMELINE0:00 – Opening Quote & Theme SetupJean Klein on “living stillness” and undoing conditioning; introduction to the episode and the Living Your Foundation of Self series.0:55 – Defining Inner Work BurnoutDescription of burnout as exhaustion from long-term inner work practices and the hidden expectation of “being further along” by now.2:05 – You Are Already Whole (Pure Consciousness)Re-centering on the core teaching: you are already whole, pure consciousness; inner work is about removing what you are not, not becoming “better.”3:05 – What Is Inner Work, Really?Revisit of the foundational definition: inner work as turning inward with awareness, curiosity, non-judgment, and gentleness rather than a self-improvement project.4:00 – The Mind as Tool vs. ObstacleThe mind's need for repetition and effort–reward loops; why this clashes with the non-linear, mysterious nature of genuine inner work.5:00 – How the Ego Co-opts Inner WorkThe underdeveloped ego's fear of obliteration; turning inner work into a “project” with goals and milestones, setting you up for burnout.6:07 – Expectation, Measurement, and FailureThe ego's “measuring stick”: Have I done enough? Found the right teacher? Become ‘better' yet? Why this project must fail from the ego's perspective.7:10 – The Real Source of ExhaustionClarifying that what drains you is not introspection itself, but striving to become a better, future self instead of accepting who you are now.8:05 – Stop Trying: From Mind-Work to Soul-ExperienceInvitation to pause effort, step out of “doing inner work,” and shift from intellectual understanding to direct, experiential being.8:55 – Self-Inquiry Practice (Ramana Maharshi)Guided explanation of asking “Who is having this thought?” and “Who am I?” to move attention from thoughts to pure awareness or “neutral space.”9:55 – The Magic Therapy QuestionIntroduction of “How do I want to feel in this situation?” with real-life examples (partner, boss, parents) and reclaiming emotional choice.10:45 – Meeting Your Inner Guru (Sadguru)Framing the highest Self / inner Guru as innate wisdom that sees beyond fear and conditioning; how all this work returns you to your foundation of Self.11:29 – Returning to the Three PillarsClear recap of the three pillars: awareness, non-judgment, gentleness—and how to use them when you feel burned out or “off track.”12:10 – Applying the Tools in the MomentCombining self-inquiry with the magic question (“How do I want to feel right now?”) to rest in neutrality and non-identification with thoughts.13:00 – You Are Already That PersonReleasing the fantasy of a more spiritual future self; recognizing you are already the healed, spiritual being you're trying to become.13:40 – Final Reminder: Ambassador of SourceClosing reflection: you are a unique iteration of pure consciousness here to experience human life in all its complexity, beauty, difficulty, and wonder; gentle sign-off.Got a question about your self? What if some of the most popular advice from today's gurus is actually keeping you from making more money, getting more done, and enjoying your life? In this no-holds-barred episode, Craig Ballantyne challenges seven common success clichés—from “get 1% better every day” to the infamous 5 AM Club—and explains why blindly following them can leave you busy without actually moving forward. You'll discover why working harder isn't always the answer, how to find your own peak productivity hours, and why better systems, leverage, and the right people can outperform endless hustle. Craig also reveals the mindset shift that helped him build multiple multimillion-dollar businesses without sacrificing family, friendships, or the rest of his life. If you're ready to stop following generic rules and start thinking critically about what actually creates wealth, productivity, and freedom, this episode will make you question everything you've been told about success. The beautiful and stirring Sri Guru Gita, as recorded in the late 1970s by then Swami Vivekananda of Integral Yoga USA, later known as Wayne Vishnu Hunt. He recently passed away, and we wanted to share his rendition of this holy prayer to the Satguru, which, for many senior disciples in Integral Yoga, became a soundtrack of our spiritual lives. Rest in peace, brother. Om Shanti.

By now it's probably quite obvious that our spiritual community is like the Protestant church you grew up in. Although all of our content on the internet is listed as "adult-content", often I have overestimated the maturity of our audience because I am only just now starting to understand how deep seated our preconceptions can be regarding hierarchies of power and institutions of authority, what to say about these things in the spiritual world. The thing is: we tend to always look outside ourselves for answers and more often, we tend to hold everyone and everything responsible for choices that we fear to own up to ourselves. But in the world of Vāmācāra/Kaula-mārga, the so-called "left hand path" of Tantra, there is no substitute for real discernment, grit and maturity. It really isn't for everybody because we're all of us different and so we'll all need different things to make spiritual progress/we'll all find different things spiritually nourishing. But how will we know if it's for us?To help with discernment and to provide a "CAUTION:HOT" disclaimer for our stuff, we put together a little playlist called Community Safety + Guidelines to help audiences get the most of our community starting with Dream Initiation | & Are We A Legitimate Tāntrik Lineage? where we ask some serious questions about lineage authority and then in How To Practice Tantra & Guru Yoga Responsibly we laid out the traditional safeguards for interacting with spiritual teachers and their communities and in Can You Learn Tantra From Books | & Am I A Tāntrik Guru? we lay out our principles and commitments as a community so you can know what to expect and what to watch out for. In this next installment, Who Should You Learn Tantra From? we offer some very important disclaimers regarding risk appetite and bhāva (spiritual predisposition) not only to carefully explain the bhāva of our community but more importantly to make the case that everyone is valid, each according to their own disposition. This teaching was given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Lama Tsonkhapa Institute in Italy as part of the Ganden Lha Gyama retreat between September 3-30, 2004.00:00:00 The purpose of the preliminary prayers is to pacify obstacles to achieving full enlightenment and the complete qualities of cessation and realization, for oneself and others.00:11:14 Lama Tsongkhapa emphasized bodhicitta in every teaching. Seeking enlightenment for oneself alone results in a limited realization. One must seek enlightenment to benefit all sentient beings.00:43:52 Buddhas liberate sentient beings by revealing the ultimate truth and reality, which is the teaching of the perfection of wisdom. This is the heart of the 84,000 teachings of the Buddha.01:21:15 Practicing kindness, forgiveness, tolerance, and rejoicing in others' happiness keep the mind peaceful and joyful. Even without deep realizations, these basic practices make one a good human being and bring peace to the world. Ultimately, realizing emptiness—the heart of the Heart Sutra—leads to liberation from samsara.01:41:16 Without depending on the guru appearing in ordinary aspect, even if there are countless buddhas, they cannot guide you to enlightenment. The guru in ordinary aspect is most precious.02:47:42 In daily life, practice mindfulness of looking at the nature of phenomena as empty. This helps control delusions from arising. Even if one doesn't have realizations, strong faith in Lama Tsongkhapa's explanation of emptiness gives hope to realize it in the future.03:27:07 In this retreat, even if one is unable to finish 100,000 migtsemas, if one achieves realization of guru devotion, one will have succeeded. That's the main goal, the main objective of doing this Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga. We're not looking for the number of mantras; we're looking for realizations.04:07:03 Rinpoche leads extensive dedications.Find out more about Lama Zopa Rinpoche, his teachings and projects at https://fpmt.org/
