In this week's episode of Dungeons & Dragons pirate adventure, the Bucs step into a situation that refuses to stay contained, where tension builds fast and every roll of the Dice carries weight. What starts as a moment of hesitation spirals into full chaos, with wild forces flaring, plans collapsing, and the walls themselves feeling hostile. In true DnD fashion, survival comes down to instinct, timing, and how much noise you're willing to make in a very bad place. How many enemies are too many? Last May, America Magazine ran an article entitled “Dungeons & Dragons—and Jesuits” by Robert Buckland, a Jesuit in formation. Buckland admits to being a longtime fan of D&D, but even he is surprised by how popular the game has become — and in the most surprising of places. Buckland describes how this role-playing game that was once shunned by religious communities is now aiding in the imaginative and moral formation of young men in religious life. “Playing D&D,” Buckland writes, “can reveal dimensions of character that might otherwise remain hidden in the structured environment of houses for religious formation.” Today's host, Eric Clayton, was enchanted by this argument; Buckland's essay has stayed with him for these many months since. And it's perhaps thanks to Buckland's writing that he then encountered today's guest: Dr. Susan Haarman. Dr. Haarman is the associate director at Loyola University Chicago's Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching and Scholarship. In that role, she facilitates the university's service-learning program and publishes on community-based learning. But her real love is the research she conducts into the capacity of tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons as formative tools for civic identity and imagination. Most important for today's conversation, Susan wrote a chapter entitled “Roll for Discernment: Dungeon Master as St. Ignatius' Spiritual Director” in the 2025 book “Theology, Religion and Dungeons and Dragons: Explorations of the Sacred through Fantasy Worlds.” Susan will be a panelist at an upcoming conference co-sponsored by the Jesuit Media Lab and Loyola University Chicago's Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage, and it was in preparing for that conference that Eric read Susan's work and wanted to talk with her more for our podcast. You might be tempted to think that D&D is something just for fantasy nerds, but as Susan so passionately details, games like Dungeons & Dragons are really experiences in shared storytelling, in co-creating and inhabiting a common space in which our imaginations — and our ability to cultivate empathy and understanding — run wild. Whether you're a long-time fan of role-playing games or just hearing about them for the first time today, we think you're going to enjoy this conversation. And, if you do, we encourage you to check out the links in our show notes—there you'll find a link to the America Magazine article, the anthology in which Susan's chapter appears and the homepage for our upcoming in-person conference on March 14th—“A Faith that Builds Worlds: The Catholic Imagination and Speculative Storytelling.” We hope to see you there. * “Dungeons & Dragons—and Jesuits” | https://www.americamagazine.org/arts-culture/2025/05/29/dungeons- dragons-religious-life-250622/ “Theology, Religions and Dungeons & Dragons” | https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/theology-religion-and-dungeons--dragons-9781978716025/ “A Faith that Builds Worlds: The Catholic Imagination and Speculative Storytelling” | https://sites.google.com/view/a-faith-that-builds-worlds/home?authuser=0

In this episode of The Game Deflators Podcast, John and Ryan dive into a packed week of gaming chatter, starting with a look at their latest pickups. John reveals an unexpectedly massive haul of Dungeons & Dragons books, while Ryan contemplates purchasing a PlayStation Portal. The conversation then shifts to industry news, where John and Ryan unpack reports of rising RAM costs and what that could mean for a potential PlayStation 5 price increase. They also discuss the recent separation of GOG from CD Projekt's corporate structure, exploring what this move might signal for the future of DRM‑free gaming and why it matters to players who value ownership and preservation. From there, the duo jumps into this week's game review, putting the original Driver for the PlayStation through its paces. They revisit the game's notoriously tough tutorial, its cinematic car chases, and the legacy it left on the genre, all while debating whether its current market price truly reflects the experience it offers today. 00:00 Introduction and Game Picks 09:53 D&D Book Collection and Value 19:53 Current Gaming Experiences 26:51 GOG's New Ownership and Future 30:10 PlayStation 5 Price Hike Discussion 32:30 Driver Game Review: Nostalgia vs. Reality Want more Game Deflators content? TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe holidays are finally over and the world feels like it's snapping back into place—shows return, routines resume, and the coffee hits just right. From that grounded moment, we wade into three stories that capture how people search for magic, beauty, and value in a noisy year. First up: the rise of fantasy‑core baby names—think romance epics, viral book series, and anime fueling a wave of Alistairs and Cordelias. We talk about why parents are chasing myth and nostalgia, how social media accelerates naming cycles, and whether a dramatic name helps a child carry story or just chases a trend. Then we pivot to the jaw‑clencher: fillers made from donated cadaver fat used for Brazilian butt lifts and breast enhancements. We sift through the medical pitch—sterile processing, minimally invasive injections, access for thinner patients—alongside the gut‑level ethics and consent questions. What does “beauty at any cost” mean when the supply chain starts in a morgue? We make the case for caution, long‑term safety data, and choosing dignity over fast results that mirror the lifespan of a viral reel. Finally, we break down McDonald's 2026 shift toward more consistent pricing and expanded rewards. Standardized price guidance could tame the location‑to‑location sticker shock, while loyalty programs sweeten value and tie customers to the app. It's a classic trade: smoother tech and predictable costs versus less human contact at the counter. For anyone feeling squeezed by inflation, these changes hint at how big brands will court trust this year—through clarity, not just coupons.Underneath it all runs a simple theme: the pull between escapism and stability. Names borrow wonder; beauty trends push limits; fast food promises order. We end by checking back in on home base—taking down decorations, settling into a rhythm, and choosing the slow, sturdy options when the world is loud. If this mix of cultural trends, ethics, and everyday choices speaks to you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review to tell us which story surprised you most.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! Roll initiative for a new episode of The Fellowship of the Mic in the year 2026! We've taken a little hiatus for almost half of 2025, but Shandra is back with some special guest hosts in the new year.In Episode 75, my Filmstagram buddy, Campo, comes on to discuss the Dungeons & Dragons movies. We discuss the poorly reviewed movie from the year 2000 with Marlon Wayans, entitled Dungeons & Dragons, and then of course, the new one with Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez from 2023, D&D: Honor Among Thieves. We discuss a variety of things in this episode: how Jeremy Irons acted his heart out in the former film, how Michelle Rodriguez gained 15 pounds of muscle in the latter film, and why is there not a bad '90s movie, like, at all?

We learn how dragonriding and dragonlances work. Laurana, or the Golden General as she is being called, leads the forces of good to victories over the draconian armies. The first pitched air battle between dragons is fought. Tas and Flint get to ride a dragon into battle! It almost ends in disaster for everyone involved. Almost. But, Tas does capture an enemy dragon rider while Flint swears off dragon riding forever. While the liberated city of Kalamn celebrates Laurana, the Knights of Solamnia and their victories Tas manages to find the lone Draconian in the city. The creature tasks the kender with delivering a message to Laurana. The message is from Kit, and states that Tanis is dying and wishes to see Laurana. Kit has agreed to a prisoner swap. Laurana agrees to this plan for no coherent reason. Everyone else thinks this is a TERRIBLE idea! Send us a textA father's quiet exit, a boy who won't be seen crying, and a farm that demands everything—this chapter traces how fracture and hard work shape a family's center of gravity. We walk through drafty rooms warmed by wood Jim split himself, goat milk poured for a child who needed it, and the kind of rural routine that makes a marriage feel strong until it doesn't. When a wool venture scales too fast and the books don't add up, the bill is paid in dollars and trust. The church that offers community also opens the door to a forbidden bond, and another departure leaves the house tense and airless. He returns for the land and the children, but forgiveness never sticks. At school, structure arrives in the form of a gifted program and a teacher who sees past the camouflage jacket and the long silences. Still, the strongest gravity is a cafeteria table, a grid, and a set of dice. Dungeons & Dragons is not just a pastime here; it becomes an architecture for control and belonging. As dungeon master, Bart builds worlds he can steer—worlds where strategy beats small talk and prestige is earned by craft. Outside, headlines warn about the game's dangers. Inside this small county, the nuance is sharper: creativity flourishes, grades wobble, and a moral spine that prizes winning over virtue draws concern from the one adult who truly pays attention.Across the hour, we connect the dots between isolation and identity, between chores at dawn and late-night storycraft, between loyalty broken in a church parking lot and alliances forged over character sheets. A new player returns and shifts the table's balance, hinting at episodes to come. If you've ever asked why some kids cling to fantasy so fiercely, this story offers hard, human answers. KATIE CROSS - BIOGRAPHY Katie Cross is ALL ABOUT writing epic magic and wild places. Creating new fantasy worlds is her jam. When she's not hiking or chasing her two littles through the Montana mountains, you can find her curled up reading a book or arguing with her husband over the best kind of sushi. Visit her at www.KatieCrossBooks.com for free short stories, extra savings on all her books (and some you can't buy on the retailers), and so much more. Mark McWaters has long been a fan of all things that go bump in the night, scratch at the door, or blow cold air on the back of your neck. From a very young age, he carried a pad and pencil around with him, composing poems to give to girls. He devoured all the Hardy Boys and Doc Savage books he could get his hands on and expanded his reading horizons from there. Robert Heinlein, Asimov, and Bradbury, whetted his appetite for Sci-Fi. Ann Rice's Interview With The Vampire blew his mind. A scene from Stephen King's Salem's Lot haunts him to this day. And Watcher by Dean Koontz made him a lifelong fan. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Became an award-winning advertising copywriter and creative director and earned enough Clios, Addys, and Communication Arts awards for bragging rights. As a writer, Mark discovered the Florida Writers Association, critique groups and writing competitions. He's won a steady stream of FWA Royal Palm Literary awards for his unpublished short stories and novels. The inspiration behind “Ghost Dog” came while reading entry rules for a magazine looking for unusual spins on traditional horror. Houses, people, dolls, even cars get haunted. So, he thought, why not dogs? Bentley, a West Highland White Terrier who sleeps under Mark's desk while he writes, agreed. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 43rd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Then inadvertently wake an Ettin as Li'High communicates from the cliff that she wants K'thriss to join her. He tries to talk her down when another voice declares ownership of Li'High, and she disappears. The heroes do their best to track her to no avail. They decide to return and bury the corpse of Boros. Back at the caravan, Gunner notices one of the cultists recognizes him, and then points to a bracelet that a child has. Seemingly trying to start a problem, the cultists were let down as the heroes politely reclaim the bracelet and pay the travelers for it. That night, the cultists try to kill the party, but K'thriss informs on them, and the heroes overcome them. This does, however, create a problem. If they are known to be in the caravan still, the cultists might continue assassination attempts, alternatively, it also may blow up K'thriss' position. They decide to stay out of the caravan and follow to Witdel. Now at the town, a new hero joins the caravan, a Kagonesti paladin, a female gnome, and a male human with red tattoos he seems to be covering up on his head. This human joins the cultists caravan, and the gnome Jamna Gleamsilver offers to work with the heroes and the new Paladin, then a dead cultist body is found and the caravan, now under way to the next destination, is once again, in an upheaval. Michael Herold, Co-HostMichael (he/him) is a confidence trainer and social skills coach, based in Vienna, Austria. He's helping his clients overcome their social anxiety through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and fun exposure exercises. (Though the jury is still out on whether they're mostly fun for him). He is also a certified therapeutic game master, utilizing the Dungeons&Dragons tabletop roleplaying game to train communication, assertiveness, and teamwork with young adults. Or actually, anyone ready to roll some dice and battle goblins in a supportive group where players want to level up (pun!) their social skills. Michael is the head coach of the L.A. based company The Art of Charm, running their confidence-building program “Unstoppable” as well as workshops on small talk, storytelling, vulnerability, and more. He is the scientific advisor and co-producer of their large podcast with more than 250 million downloads. He's a public speaker who has spoken at TEDx, in front of members of parliament, universities, and once in a cinema full of 500 kids high on sugary popcorn. In a previous life, he was a character animator working on award-winning movies and TV shows such as “The Penguins of Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda”. That was before he realized that helping people live a meaningful life is much more rewarding than working in the film business – even though the long nights in the studio allowed him to brew his own beer in the office closet, an activity he highly recommends. Michael grew up with five foster kids who were all taken out of abusive families. His foster sisters showed him how much positive change is possible in a person if they have the love and support they need.Emily Edlynn, PhD, Co-HostEmily (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in pediatric health psychology who works in private practice with children, teens, and adults. Enjoy a recent Podcast Interview I had the honor of doing with the Amazing Anika Jackson with the Your Brand Amplified Podcast, where we discussed Self-Mastery and Authentic Living. Check out Anika's Podcast below! Central to Dr. JC Doornick's philosophy is the belief that genuine success arises from a harmonious alignment between internal values and external actions. His own journey of transformation—moving from struggle and self-doubt to lasting change—demonstrates that lasting fulfillment begins with prioritizing both physical and mental health. By urging individuals to confront rather than avoid their fears, Dr. Doornick turns obstacles into catalysts for growth, nurturing resilience, authenticity, and compassion along the way. Through his frameworks and personal example, he illustrates that personal and professional breakthroughs require self-awareness, kindness, and persistent action. His focus is not merely on external accomplishments but on cultivating an environment where individuals are equipped to realize their potential, create meaningful impact, and enjoy a life anchored in purpose. For those ready to engage more deeply with these transformative concepts, follow Dr. JC Doornick's Makes Sense Podcast or subscribe to his Substack at https://drjcdoornick.substack.com.
