Let's drill down on the physical and mental attributes that made Kobe Bryant a great basketball player--the granular stuff that basketball junkies love. We examine each stage of Kobe's life and career through the eyes of someone who knew Kobe well at each stage. We have three coaches with ties to Kobe to break everything down. First, you'll hear from Ashley Howard, who grew up with Kobe and played against him when they were kids. He had been Jay Wright's top assistant coach on two national-championship teams at Villanova, and now he's the head coach at La Salle University. In Part 2 of this episode you'll hear from Temple University head coach Aaron McKie, who played 13 seasons in the NBA. Aaron finished his career with the Lakers; he was Kobe's teammate there for two years. But before that, he had to guard him a couple of times each season -- and throughout the 2001 NBA Finals, when Kobe's Lakers beat Aaron's 76ers. In Part 3 you'll hear from Brett Brown. Brett has known Kobe for a long time and in a lot of ways. He game-planned against him and got to coach him in two NBA All-Star Games when Brett was an assistant under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. He coached against Kobe in the Olympics, when Kobe was on the U.S. team and Brett was the head coach of the Australian team. And Brett was the Sixers' head coach when Kobe played his final game in Philadelphia, in December 2015. Guest: Ashley Howard, La Salle Basketball Head CoachIn this week's coaching conversation, La Salle head coach Ashley Howard joins the podcast to discuss coaching offense with concepts instead of plays. Ashley Howard has the storied La Salle University men's basketball program on an upward trajectory heading into his third season as head coach in 2020. The Explorers put together their first winning season since the 2016-17 season and had a number of noteworthy highlights. Getting key performances from different players each night, La Salle defeated three opponents in three days to win the Gulf Coast Showcase in Florida. Each of those three teams that the Explorers beat would go on to win at least 20 games -- South Alabama (20), Murray State (23), and Wright State (25). Over two-plus years, Howard has revamped the La Salle roster by focusing on talented student-athletes from the East Coast. Nine players hail from within a one-hour radius of La Salle's campus, with three more calling the nation's capital of Washington, D.C. home. Prior to his arrival at La Salle, Howard spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova, helping the Wildcats to a pair of National Championships. During his time with the Wildcats, Howard was involved in all aspects of the program including on-court teaching, player development, and recruiting. He was instrumental in helping the team set a new NCAA record for the most wins in a four-year span. The Philadelphia native recruited future NBA Draft Picks Mikal Bridges (10th Overall, Phoenix Suns), Jalen Brunson (33rd Overall, Dallas Mavericks), Donte DiVincenzo (17th Overall, Milwaukee Bucks), and Omari Spellman (30th Overall, Atlanta Hawks). He was also a member of the coaching staff that developed Josh Hart into the National Player of the Year in 2016 and a first-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2016 NBA Draft. Prior to Villanova, Howard accrued a decade's worth of college coaching experience at three different stops. He began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Drexel University, in 2002 after an injury cut short his playing career for the Dragons. In 2004, following graduation, Howard was hired as an assistant coach at La Salle by Dr. John Giannini. He spent four years with the Explorers before returning to Drexel in 2008 as an assistant coach to James "Bruiser" Flint. He was part of a staff that led the Dragons to consecutive 20-win seasons, including a school record of 29 victories in 2011-12. In 2012-13, Howard served as an assistant on Chris Mack's staff at Xavier University before landing back in his hometown with Villanova.Breakdown1:00 - Influence of Villanova on his Coaching Philosophy5:00 - Playing Out Concepts10:00 - Biggest Challenges Playing with Concepts12:00 - Driving Space and Drive Decision15:00 - Specific Cues19:00 - Importance of Upper Year Players23:00 - Nash25:00 - Cues on Cutting on a Drive28:00 - Teaching the Weak Side31:00 - Small Ball Concept33:00 - Concept of Jumpstart and Spacing36:00 - Practice with Video39:00 - One-on-One Concept41:00 - Modern Analytics and Offensive Mentality44:00 - Importance of Two-Way teaching46:00 - Keeping the Opponents Off-Balance50:00 - Modern Defensive System51:00 - Shot fake53:00 - The Atlantic 1055:00 - ConclusionAshley Howard’s Bio:Website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Howard_(basketball)Basketball ImmersionWebsite: http://basketballimmersion.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersionFacebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersionBetOnline Website:Website: www.betonline.agBest in the West Video SeriesBest in the West Website: http://bestinthewestclinic.com/

It was a typical postseason spring workout for Ashley Howard. Howard had just come off a successful sophomore season at Drexel, where he averaged 8.9 points and 4.9 steals. He was excited to get the opportunity to play under Bruiser Flint, who had been named the Drexel coach following the 2000-01 season. He was at the peak of his basketball prowess, a young man ready to make his mark on a program. But he didn’t feel right during that workout. The answer he got after telling Dragons trainers and being evaluated ended up being one of the worst moments of his life – but also one of the most important. It was discovered that Howard had a heart condition, and his basketball career, so suddenly, was over. “It was the most difficult part of my life when you talk about being 20 years old, the time I invested in basketball from I can’t even remember up until that point and then to not be able to play again, it was hard.” La Salle University men’s basketball coach Ashley Howard joins Bracy Sports Media to talk about his rise to a Division I head coaching job after assistant coaching stints at La Salle, Drexel, Xavier and Villanova. – Aaron Bracy has been a fixture covering Philadelphia sports for more than two decades. Vegan Radio 53 features an interview with Ashley Howard who owns Heaven's Harvest Farm in New Braintree, MA. The farm is a CSA, providing portions of its harvest to people who pay for a share. The farm has always offered organic produce, but this year Ashley will be farming organically and without the use of animal manure. Since manure comes from animal agriculture it is not considered vegan. The method to be used on Heaven's Harvest Farm this year will be strictly "veganic", relying on no animal products other than what is there from local wildlife, of course! Speaking of which, the second half of our show features a pre-recorded interview with Rasa and Marlis, two vegetarians who have a web page called Deer in the Yard which documents their interactions with a family of deer in California. The deer have become good friends with Rasa and Marlis and stop by for back rubs and other fun and games.Interview Links: Deer in the Yard on Youtube, Starseed Music, Marlis' ArtNews Links: Prince Charles Bans Fois Gras, The Toxoplasma Gondii Parasite
