In Part 1 of this week's episode of Next on the Tee, I kick things off with a return visit from NHL legend and a fantastic golfer Dan Quinn. Dan played 14 seasons in the NHL, including memorable years alongside Mario Lemieux with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Off the ice, Dan has logged countless rounds at Oakmont and spent several years caddying on the PGA Tour for the likes of Ernie Els, John Daly, Yost Luiten—and a then up-and-coming Cam Smith. We revisit his experiences playing Oakmont, and I get his insights on this year's US Open. We hear about the rounds he played there with Mario Lemieux and Next on the Tee favorite Bob Ford. You'll hear about his times on the bag for Ernie Els at the 2013 US Open and the 2015 US Open for a rookie named Cam Smith. We finish up discussing what the Penguins need to do in order to get back being a playoff caliber team. Then I'm joined by longtime friend and fellow broadcaster Jeff Tracy, host of Grilling at the Green and Barbecue Nation shows on AM 860 in Portland. Jeff's a true Renaissance man—he's not only a seasoned radio host and golf analyst, he's also a competitive barbecue master and a former horse show judge. We talk golf, brisket, and Jeff's thoughts on the PGA Championship and the upcoming U.S. Open. You won't want to miss the insights and laughs with two guys who bring serious flavor—both on the course and off.

In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by two of the most legendary PGA Professionals the game has ever known—quite possibly ranked 1 and 1A on that list. First up is PGA Professional Hall of Famer Bob Ford. Bob's accolades span across four Hall of Fames, the prestigious William D. Richardson Award from the Golf Writers Association of America, and the Bobby Jones Award—one of the highest honors in the game. He's served as Head Professional at both Oakmont and Seminole, and his coaching tree reaches wider than any in history. If you've watched the U.S. Open over the past decade, you've likely heard his voice—he's been the official Starter since 2017 and will continue as long as he wants the job. Bob shares his insights on this year's Masters, what to expect from the U.S. Open's return to Oakmont, and, as a proud Yinzer, throws in some thoughts on the Steelers. Then, I'm honored to welcome another giant in the game—Suzy Whaley. A Hall of Famer in her own right, Suzy was the first female President of the PGA of America, is a Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor, and currently preparing to Captain the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team. She was also recently on the bag for her niece, Phoebe Brinker, at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Suzy reflects on that experience, discusses the potential for a Women's Masters Tournament, and we explore a few exciting job opportunities where her leadership would be a perfect fit. Don't miss this conversation with two all-time greats.

Josiah "Doc" Scurlock was a poet, philosopher, intellectual, and hardened killer long before he met Billy the Kid. His mysterious past in Mexico, rumors of dead men from New Orleans to Texas, penchant for vigilantism, and several close calls with hostile Natives all made Doc a man to be both feared and respected. However, the trials he would face after the Lincoln County War made Scurlock the man his family would remember.  Jose Chavez y Chavez was a constable in San Patricio and an ally of the Tunstall McSween faction during the Lincoln County War. Jose was a full participant in the troubles and was present during the Battle of Lincoln, making a getaway from the burning McSween home alongside Billy the Kid. But who was Jose Chavez y Chavez, really? Was he a Navajo, as popularly believed? And how did he become a hired assassin? Also discussed in this episode is Chavez's encounter with Bob Ford and the other Regulators and friends of Billy the Kid, guys like Henry Newton Brown, George and Frank Coe, Ab Saunders, John Middleton, Billy Wilson, Tom Pickett, and more! I also give my opinion on what really happened there at Fort Sumner on the night of Billy's alleged death and discuss The Kid's “body count”. This is a mashup of two previously released episodes on the pals of Billy the Kid. The Hatchie River is the longest free-flowing tributary of the lower Mississippi River; it harbors the largest forested floodplain remaining in Tennessee and is the only river in the state that is designated as a State Scenic River in its entirety. As Ford shares in this episode, many see the Hatchie as a restorative, soul-nourishing sanctuary—a sacred place to feel connected to something larger than themselves. Summary Welcome to another great episode of the Startup Junkie Podcast! In this live recorded special episode, hosts Jeff Amerine and Caleb Talley join Amy Herzberg and Bob Ford, the co-founders of TheatreSquared (T2), and Shannon Jones, the executive director, on the set of A Christmas Carol for a captivating discussion about TheatreSquared's origin and mission. Since its founding in 2005, TheatreSquared's locally produced and nationally acclaimed productions have remained rooted in its founding vision that “theatre done well and with passion can transform lives and communities.” Throughout the episode, Amy, Bob, and Shannon share how TheatreSquared has impacted Arkansas's artistic landscape and how its reputation continues to blossom in the performing arts world.   Show Notes (1:45) Introduction to Bob Ford and Amy Herzberg (2:23) TheatreSquared's Origin Story (15:59) TheatreSquared's Impact on Arkansas's Artistic Landscape (19:53) Attracting Talent from the University of Arkansas (26:29) Introduction to Shannon Jones (33:29) Catering To New Audiences (36:37) How TheatreSquared Approaches Innovation (40:37) Measuring TheatreSquared's Success (44:32) Questions from the Audience (52:54) Advice to Younger Self (56:09) Closing Question and Thoughts   Links Jeff Amerine  Caleb Talley Bob Ford Amy Herzberg Shannon Jones TheatreSquared   Quotes “Having this theatre [in Northwest Arkansas] makes a real statement about how the arts are valued in this area, and that means a lot to people who are coming from all over the place to study at the University of Arkansas in its theatre department.” - Amy Herzberg, (20:05) “I think one of the things that theatre does really well is it touches lives. Like you said, in our mission, it transforms communities. And the thing about T2 and the thing I think that we do really well, and I think we'll continue to expand upon, is making that human connection. And I think one thing that we use to help build upon what is already there is our ability to adapt.” - Shannon Jones, (33:52) “When I see a young person say, ‘I've never seen me and my friends on stage before, I've never seen my story before. Thank you.' That's how I measure [success]. That's what keeps me going, that to me is impact. We could fill this place, I guarantee, if we put on certain shows over and over again, and that would also look like a certain kind of success. But our goal is to do both because what we're discovering is that our community wants to see a full range of stories because, as we know, everybody's different, but also everybody's the same. But that's an amazing kind of conundrum.” - Bob Ford, (41:19)

While they didn't know each other well at the time, she actually worked in the camp of a certain famous Brooklyn prize fighter that any 90s kid will remember well!! - Going upstate to the University of Albany where he played for legendary 700+ win coach Bob Ford and learned what it took to be part of a winner. - Taking his career to the next level coordinating some very explosive offenses on deep playoff runs at Fort Bend Marshall including a trip to the state championship! Under the tutelage of legendary HC James Williams, Oji learned the skills necessary to lead Cy Springs to one game out of the playoffs in only his 2nd season! - Finally as a native New Yorker, Coach Fagan gives us his G-Men Mt.Rushmore along with as an offensive guru, settling the QB Goat debate for us!! Man, that Jesse's a dick. But he does, indeed, have the ingredients. Here we speak on the legendary legend and cold reality of Jesse James. We've got strong feels that casting Brad Pitt (MO boy) as Jesse James (MO boy) was a good move. And we're loving Casey Affleck as Bob Ford. Furthermore, let us not overlook Casey's beautiful glass skin, my brothers and sisters. HIS SKIN. We hit on a few burning questions: Do they even make outlaws like they used to? Do you brush your teeth nekkid? A blumpkin in the privy?! Tangents include fun Hollywood couples, Chris Rock's orgasms, and vabbing. And…Snaturals(TM) are born!

Bob Ford likes to say if he has 10 good stories to tell sitting around a bar, Charles Barkley is the subject of 7 or 8 of them. Hear a few of his greatest hits from covering Sir Charles, each told with Bob's wit and dead-on voice imitation. He also shares other memorable moments from his long, distinguished career in Philadelphia that took him around the world and made his columns must-reads. Only Bob could bring us Pete Rose, Doug Moe, Prince Albert, a Finish sports talk radio debate over ski jumping, and wolf urine – yes, wolf urine – all in one episode. You'll understand why other sportswriters always enjoyed Bob's company. He's a real treasure. Ford was an award-winning writer at the Philadelphia Inquirer for nearly 33 years – the final 18 as a columnist – until his retirement in 2020. He was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary. Bob was a general assignment feature writer, with an emphasis on Olympic sports and long-form narrative from 1994 until his promotion as columnist in 2003. He previously covered the NBA and 76ers as the paper's beat reporter for six years. Bob was named Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year seven times by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He covered six Olympics, three World Cups, numerous NBA Finals, the Tour de France, Wimbledon, the British Open and other major sporting events. He wrote stories from 14 countries and throughout the U.S. His work was also recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press, and the Keystone Press Association. He was twice named a top 10 columnist in the large circulation division of the AP Sports Editors competition, and he also won the 2005 Eclipse Award for outstanding feature writing on thoroughbred racing. Prior to joining the Inquirer in 1987, Bob worked six years at the Delaware County Daily Times outside of Philadelphia, where he covered the Phillies as a beat reporter for three seasons and later served as columnist. Bob began his journalism career as sports editor of the Easton (Md.) Star-Democrat (1976 to '81) following his graduation from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. His alma mater's Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism honored Bob in 2017 with a “Distinguished Terrapin” award. Ford is a fellow of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. Bob is a native of College Park, Md. His wife, Bonnie Ford, was an award-winning sports journalist at ESPN, the Chicago Tribune, The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, the Detroit News, and the Ann Arbor News. The author of the multi-volume "Beagle Tales" series, Bob Ford returns with a new collection, "Bramble Rambles." Reflections made while exercising his hounds in the fields of Northern Pennsylvania, Pastor Ford has put these into a form of conversation starters for faith-based dialogue, but are not meant to achieve dogmatic answers.  These rambles originally appeared in social media posts to provide a positive message in a medium that is often negative. The popularity of these posts has brought them into book form. An avid outdoorsman, Bob and his wife Renee both serve as pastors. Bob has been in parish ministry since 1996 in Ohio and Tioga and Clearfield Counties in Pennsylvania, the latter of which he currently serves. Not the Swing, but Visibility, Member Service and Access is Paramount for any Department Head Visibility is crucial for a Director of Golf and Pat Gunning understands that. His daily ritual as Director of Golf at the famed Noyac Golf Club takes him to the club to greet the members teeing off at 6.30am. His day is basically set up to make himself as visible to the members as possible. Although at the club most of the day, he limits the number of hours he teaches, so he remains available to the membership, and sometimes more importantly, to his staff. Tee Times for Management Flow “Starting times, tee times, it really allows you to anticipate what is going to happen better. It makes the flow of the day that much easier,” says Gunning who has worked at clubs with and without tee times. Covid, says Gunning, really ended the "Caddy Yard" – and with Covid and starting times changing people's thought processes on tee times, it allow caddies to be reserved and also get on with their work and with their day too rather than just hanging at the caddy barn. “The Little Things Take Care of the Big Things” Pat Gunning, Director of Golf at Noyac Golf Club, Sag Harbor, NY Pat realizes that golf and tennis professionals, and really anyone in the club business, are in the hospitality business. He learned the above quote from one of his mentors, Jack Druga, who is Director of Golf at Shinnecock Hills.  And, recently retired Bob Ford who served as Director of Golf at both Oakmont and Seminole, always told Pat to treat members as if they were guests in your own home. Pat says keeping these two thoughts in his mind during a fast-paced summer season allows him to succeed. Is it the Era of Reconstruction for Golf Courses? Clubs want to create a better and more memorable experience and the design of the golf course falls into making that playing experience better. Having viewed changes across the nation by some of the best golf course architects, Gunning believes that the best changes are tweaks and modifications which make the golf course harder for the A and B player but slightly easier for the C and D player. The architects, Gunning says, are masters at making holes playable for all level of players. Golf course design and modification is part of a long-term strategy. Gunning adds that long-term strategic planning is really all about idea creation. Timelines may be either adopted or changed or completely shelved by the Board, but it's imperative to keep new ideas flowing through the strategic plan, believes Gunning. Planning for next year is essential and reviewing the calendar, event by event, is a crucial exercise to do post-season. It helps keep the season flowing and allows to avoid staff burnout and member boredom. Pat Gunning joins the BeyondTheBaselines.com podcast as one of the leading Directors of Golf in the country.
